cause when you know, you know
everyone had realized that steve was hopelessly in love with you and you with him, you were simply the two fools in love in not realizing it
warnings: fem reader! steve’s love language is acts of service, fluff, inspire on lana song’s margaret bcs when you know you know ♡ reader being steve’s girl
Tumblr media
the first person to notice was eleven, according to his words he had never seen steve so attentive to someone, not since nancy.
they had organized a small meeting to be able to watch movies on the great harrington television, nancy had attended and jonathan too, practically all were there.
“steve will come in a moment” robin entered the room with a bowl of pop corn and cans of coca cola, his gaze went to you and pointed to the kitchen with his head “ask that if you want iced or unfrozen coca cola, ice apart-“
“uhm, it doesn’t matter” you answered from your place, the individual sofa that steve had made Eddie give you as soon as you get home after work, with a book on your lap you watched Robin nod
robin walked to the kitchen and saw the small bowls full of sweets, steve was not someone sweet, he liked peanuts, pringles and pretzels, clearly this was not for him but he knew your favorite sweets.
m&m, only the yellow and green ones, sugary gummies that only sold in family video and some licorice cut in half, sweets that the children would not pay attention to if steve had made two different types of popcorn.
robin took out two more cans and noticed a fourth, fifth and sixth can of a different color... sugar-free coke, it was silver and different from the regular one
“something else?” the redhead raised her eyebrows towards her best friend and he denied
“no, i just wanted you to take that and take it” steve extended the potatoes and some pretzels “the beers are outside, max has his sandwiches and-“ steve interrupted himself before taking out the can of coke zero, a glass and in another ice to put them on the wooden tray next to the candies.
eleven was an observer, she liked to look, read people, analyze and then judge alone or with someone, lately she was max, the freckled redhead who was recovering from her last most recent injury, her broken wrist thanks to skateboarding.
“steve spends a lot of time in the kitchen whenever we come here” Max murmured taking a handful of popcorn, it was his conversation with him, soft and safe.
“steve wants to impress y/n” eleven replied without looking up at the magazine he had on his lap and heard Max laugh softly “he was serious, max”
max looked up and watched you carefully, you were reading one of your favorite books while you bit your fingers, steve had picked you up at work. the book store that they had opened a few months ago and you had taken care of being there since its inauguration.
max watched steve come out of the kitchen with the tray and with robin behind with more food, the tray full of sweets, different sweets that she would not eat in her life, maybe dustin if they gave her money but in her life they would touch a licorice, a coke zero. ice but with ice in a glass.
“you don’t eat licorice, dustin hates the m&m, dobin hates the reese and no one eats those,” eleven murmured as he let out a sigh before laughing.
they heard you thank steve and max let out a loud sigh to look at lucas “why aren’t you like that?”
robin watched eddie and eddie watched robin before letting out a laugh at the same time while still seeing steve eating from his pretzel while he was looking at a magazine you had brought for him.
robin was really the first to realize it, but nancy and jonathan were officially the second to notice it.
you work was not so far from the newspaper from where she worked together with jonathan, it was close to the center but far from where you lived and where you spent the most time, steve’s house and the byers.
you had a car but you used your bike mostly in your morning and afternoon shifts but Steve hated you to use your white bike at night, especially when he knew your shortcuts to get there, the forest or the road.
“isn’t that steve?” jonathan pointed to steve’s car parked and completely turned off, in front of your work. “well, his car”
nancy nodded as she began to walk with jonathan, Will and Eleven towards the book store, with the “CLOSED” sign on the glass and the lights on she could see you on the floor with books around while steve moved some boxes
“what is he doing?” will questioned before he felt steps next to him
“helping her with the inventory” robin responded looking at them with bags in his hands, food to take away “and y/n she has to do the inventory at least twice a week and steve comes to help her”
“i didn’t even make the inventory in family video or at dinner” nancy spoke raising her eyebrow and Robin nodded
“i know, steve hates doing the inventory but y/n? she loves it” robin replied looking at the four curious people waiting for more answers “....while she makes the inventory she makes three rows, the ones she wants to buy, the ones she will read between shifts and the ones that steve and i may like”
“steve’s reads?” jonathan joked and robin laugh
“no, he doesn’t but for her she does” the redhead laughed as she began to walk towards the door “see you on friday, guys”
when she disappeared from their views, eleven looked at nancy and will a jonathan, they had talked about it, but it was a very on the table to joke.
“i can’t believe it...steve is in love,” jonathan murmured, “he’s in love with a girl who seems to easily reject him if she want it ”
“i know” eleven murmured raising her shoulders and nancy laughed
eddie was the one who made dustin notice it, it wasn’t really much work
“why are we going to steve’s house at this time? we should be on our way to the record store, eddie” dustim complained as he let out a really frustrated sigh
“i have to take my toolbox to Harrington, he called me before leaving and he has saved my ass many times” eddie replied looking at the road “i wonder why i needed it”
“fix something, genius” dustin spoke in an obvious tone before receiving a blow to the back of his neck “ouch”
when he arrived at the Harrington house, Eddie left and Dustin’s curiosity followed him until he ended up in his yard, your white bicycle was lying on the floor while steve rebuilt his light brown artificial straw basket.
“there you are” eddie took his toolbox and put it on the floor looking at the bicycle on the floor “what happened here?”
“i’m fixing y/n’s bike, she mentioned that it had no maintenance and i’m checking it” steve responded calmly by repairing the bicycle
“and...why don’t you take her to the store? eddie pue-“ dustin was going to continue but his gaze landed on you, sitting on the glass patio table under the umbrella with a flower dress, glasses, a coke with ice and reading a book “hey y/n!”
“hello dustin!” you smiled raising your gaze “hello eddie” showing your teeth you smiled again and steve looked at the boys finishing the basket he had made
“thank you for the eddie tools; I owe you one” steve smiled slightly before looking at the tires of the bicycle “I will stop by the store to inflate the tires, will it be wayne ?”
“the old man lives in that place since we opened it” eddie joked before hitting dustin “we’re leaving, enjoy your evening, guys”
“that was-“ dustin began to talk and Eddie nodded.
“every two or three weeks” eddie raised his shoulders as if nothing “yes, it’s not the bicycle, he carries the y/n car and makes us crash it four or five times”
“but y/n doesn’t have a driver’s license” dustin spoke by opening the passenger seat “ah- ouuh I understand”
“how could you notice that about steve?” eddie questioned by turning on the car
“steve cares about everyone, even you,” dustin simply replied, “seeing him do this is normal”
“uhm as if i had ever brought you a source exclusively of sweets on movie night” eddie annoyed dustin
max, lucas, joyce and hopper were the next, four to realize.
“does anyone know when steve will arrive? i need him to show us the way to be able to go quietly in joyce’s car with the children” hopper approached jonathan and he gently denied
joyce told every human being that she would go, max, lucas, dustin, will, mike érica, and eleven check, robin, nancy, jonathan and eddie check, y/n and steve, no check.
“two of all of them here are missing, and one of them owns the place,” joyce reported as she watched everyone deny
“y/n works today” max spoke while eating his chips “afternoon shift”
as if it were magic, steve’s car was parked on the sidewalk of the hoppers as he went out and opened the back seat and you left the co-driver’s seat to open the trunk.
“i’m sorry for the late, i couldn’t close the door and steve had to help” you apologized by taking the suitcases of max, érica, dustin and lucas to put them away to approach joyce and give her a hug.
“steve went to work for you?” hopper question and you nodded
“i didn’t take my bike, it was going to take up a lot of space in the trunk and no suitcase was going to fit,” you replied receiving the drink that steve extended to you, “are we going?”
both joyce and hopper always had a small space for steve, who had given his body, strength and sacrifice in addition to sweat and blood for those children without control. this was new news for joyce, who kept in touch with steve weekly
“don’t say anything, we know,” jonathan responded by looking at you getting into the car with the help of steve, closing the co-pilot’s door before getting in the car and asking the boys something.
max and lucas were the ones who noticed the tension, steve was the one who guided the road, three stops to go to the bathroom and in all of them he went to the store to buy you something, anything but he came out with a bag and if he remembered something for them too, a stop at a hamburger restaurant and he was the one who asked for your order and paid.
small actions that showed great feelings was what max in the middle of the road while you were sleeping and steve had turned down the music.
you used to be very reserved in the group, you joined thanks to your closeness with dustin but you never knew what happened until max was the one who called you to go to the byers’ house because they needed help with a problem.
the problem was steve harrington beaten by billy, from there you started to frequent and now you were the center of the universe for steve.
it didn’t matter who wanted to go out with steve, him was watching you.
the moon wanted the attention of the sun but the sun was very focused on the earth.
♡.
who spilled the drop of the vessel was érica, she was the youngest of the group but the most daring, fast and intelligent, she had the ability to put things in their place and make people uncomfortable if she wanted to.
like now, great barbecue, excellent attention, you hated the sun and although steve convinced you to go out you decided to stay close to joyce and hopper while you read a book and talked with joyce and from time to time with robin when you put a blocker on his face.
eddie took the hot dog that steve asked him for and érica watched him, he watched you while you were talking to joyce but steve was focusing on you.
“when will you tell her that you’re dying for her?” erica spoke making even nancy stop doing what she was doing from where she was not far from the pool, steve under her sunglasses and observed érica “what?”
“what about what? what are you talking about, girl? i’m not in love with y/n” steve bit his hot dog “we’re just friends”
“you do things for her” érica rubbed her in the face
“i do things for everyone” steve defended himself foolishly
“can you fix my bike?” dustin looked at steve and he denied
“of course not, take her to eddie’s store, he can see her,” steve replied rolling his eyes and everyone looked at him... he fixed and checked your bike biblically every two weeks “oh come on, i’ll do more things for everyone”
“we worked two years in family video and a summer in scoops today, you never made the inventory,” robin pointed out, judging him
“you’ve never removed the nuts from my deliveries and I’m allergic to them” dustin did the same
“or you’ve never almost run out of a place when we call you and ask for a pull to any side” lucas continued
“since i met you, the only time you told me a candy was by mistake,” eleven said.
“here the important thing is that steve reads for that girl” jonathan murmured still surprised at what he hear
“do you want to hear something more cheesy?” robin looked defiantly at steve and then at Jonathan when the seat “he bought her the row of books that she made that night from the inventory”
steve let out a sigh and looked at everyone giving them good points about the fact that he was in love with you and went crazy about your existence, they were right but he was afraid of a very internal one that he didn’t want to admit.
“well, i like her,” steve acknowledged, “but not because i like her, i taake care of her, she is practically alone here and-“ steve was going to continue but eddie interrupted him
“shhhh- hey and/n what’s going on?” eddie looked at your heels, because you liked those beach heels and they were beautiful and pink, also a gift from steve
“joyce and i will go for something and i need the keys, sir” you went to steve and he nodded getting up from the floor starting to walk with you towards his jacket “all right?
“yes, so-....uhm, can we talk later? when everyone is in their rooms” the chestnut asked as he handed out the keys to you and you nodded
“when will you tell him that you are in love with him?” joyce questioned you as soon as they left the house and got in the car “hey, don’t look at me like that”
your relationship with the people who were your family was not satisfactory enough for you and joyce was the closest thing to a maternal figure.
“i’m not in love with steve” you murmured looking at steve’s car, every night shift steve went to your work in pajamas, red checkered pants or his gray divers and a black t-shirt to pick you up and leave you at home safe and sound, he didn’t care that your bike dirtyed its trunk upholstery “….well maybe”
“honey , you can lie to me or try, i, joyce maldonado i can assure you that you have to do it now” joyce spoke while driving “i met hopps when i was approximately twelve years old, in high school I fell in love with him and when i rejected him for my children’s father we didn’t meet again until after 20 years old” she expressed vaguely
“if your point was to encourage me, you’re not neuron successful”
“my point is... don’t stay where i stay, maybe my destiny was to have my two wonderful children but hopper was the one who was closer to them than his own father, i never gave myself the opportunity to look at him with other eyes of ‘it’s just a friend’s just a friend’t takes you at two in the morning because of cravings or because of your contractions he takes you to the hospital” Joyce river softly “when you know, you know, honey”
“steve is the only person i have here” you acknowledged “recognizing that i like it is uhm. betray what i told myself when i met him and saved me from that crack when the mall happened. i couldn’t afford to be alone again”
“and i know that now i have eddie and robin but no one like steve, steve- steve is very sweet to me, even when we were at school, everyone was too kind to me even when i was only with Jonathan” you continued and joyce nodded
“just remember it, honey, when you know you know”
Tumblr media
when you know, you know.
steve kept his word when he said he wanted to talk to you when no one was around.
the country house belonged to his parents but he had obtained permission to take it for a few days and the yard was his favorite place in the house, later there was a small wooden kazeebo and that’s where you were waiting for him, biting your lips and nails from anxiety.
“hey, i’m sorry for make you wait” steve smiled showing the moderately large paper bag “i had to go for this without anyone seeing it”
you nodded nervously, you felt that you were going to pee in your pants and that you would have to sink into the bathtub in the bathroom in your room, because steve gave you his room in the house.
“steve, we have to talk well- i, i have to talk” you moved your gaze towards steve before playing with your hands “joyce is right”
“hopper is right,” steve murmured back.
“to let my feelings eat me is a good idea for my mental and emotional health, the last thing I want is to lose you because you are my best friend and probably the only one i can count on because Eddie never answers calls and- god verbal vomiting, i’m sorry, steve harrington i like you”
you expected a ‘i only see you as friends’ ‘but you are a little sister to me’ never expecting for
“i feel exactly the same for you,” steve replied, looking at you open your eyes in surprise, making him laugh, “all right?”
“pffff of course....no” you laughed nervously while you let out a laugh again “now what do you do?”
“i haven’t been in a relationship since I was seventeen” steve responded by raising his shoulders getting closer to you and wrapping your arm around your shoulder attracting you towards the “but i brought this”
“did you bring my dignity?” normally those were your jokes and he was very aware of them but he denied
“i bringed sweets and something for you, i would usually have given it to you in front of robin or the boys but there is something they can’t see” steve murmured as you let out a laugh and took the paper bag
in addition to sweets there was a small detail in a pink invitation, valentine’s day was approaching and you were thinking of sleeping all day but steve’s plans were different.
“Dinner for two. 19 PM. formal clothes”
you laugh before kissing steve’s cheek and taking a pack of reese and taking a bite.
“i hated the plans you told me you would do on valentine’s day and if this didn’t happen i planned to force you to leave the house” steve commented taking the reede pedrizo that you gave him “do you accept?”
“i accept to be your valentine’s day, harrington,” you answered by getting closer to him, steve took your legs by placing them on his lap and your body on his arm.
“how?” steve asked softly, “what did you talk to joyce?”
steve also talked to hopper, in fact he was forced by him while you weren’t with joyce and the boys had already had fun bothering him
“rather know you who talked to hopps” you murmured softly and he raised his shoulders
“about knowing when you know it perfectly and you don’t want to admit it” steve murmured about your syen and leaving a soft kiss to hug you again.

The Civic Center MARTA Station never stops being impressive to me, hovering over the interstate highway and wrapped around West Peachtree Street. It's quite a sight, especially at night.
It's a shame that we aren't building train stations here anymore. The last one built inside the city limits of Atlanta was Buckhead Station, which opened nearly 30 years ago.
With the expansion of heavy rail looking less and less viable every year, due to the rising costs (which is a national problem), I had hoped we could at least fund some infill stations along the existing lines using the special transit tax. But the proposals for infill stations were dropped from the More MARTA spending list.
Will the ones built in the 20th century remain the only heavy-rail stations Atlanta has? It's certainly possible. At least for our lifetimes. If so, making the best usage of them is paramount.
Rezone for sensible density and affordable homes around all stations. Decrease the maximums for parking allowed near stations (studies have found the availability of parking is associated with lower transit ridership). Push the state government for dedicated operations funding to improve service and maintenance. Make sure the streets around stations have excellent design for walking and biking to stations.
Basically, act like we're in a city. Support our precious transit assets with urbanism that promotes ridership and that shifts more trips out of cars.

Emmeline Summers (Fireman Sam)
Tumblr media
Emmeline Summers is a fanmade Fireman Sam character. She's a Junior First Responder, Captain of the Recess Rescue Crew, and the mayor's foster daughter. She is 10 years old and is an unofficial member of the rescue team, training under Penny Morris.
Here are her Tropes:
Acquainted with Emergency Services: Because of her advanced safety knowledge, Emmeline receives one-on-one training with Penny rather than being a Safety Cadet. She also often hangs out around the Fire Station and sometimes tags along for rescues.
Action Girl - Always on her feet and plenty athletic.
Aesop Amnesia: Emmeline always seems to forget that attempting a rescue with minimal training is dangerous.
Banker Street Regular: While she isn't an official part of the rescue team because of her age and lack of training, Emmeline sometimes performs minor rescue support at the Pontypandy Primary School.
Brains and Brawn - While she often displays both, she's for the most part the brawn to James's brain.
Children Raise You: When she is with her father, Emmeline is often the voice of reason and often needs to keep him calm in moments of panic.
Cool Bike: Emmeline's "vehicle" Trailblazer is a red mountain bike with a fire design running across it, along with a compartment for safety gear and for her cat Tracy to sit.
Cool Pet: Emmeline has a pet tuxedo cat named Tracy.
Didn't think this through: Emmeline sometimes doesn't use her best judgment, such as not realizing that not taking her narcolepsy meds would cause her to fall asleep at the worst time or that attempting a water rescue could end badly for her.
Fatal Flaw: Her ambition almost always gets the better of her. And then there's her eagerness to impress Penny.
Fire-Forged Friends: Emmeline and James start out as rivals, both believing they know safety better than the other. This changes when they need to work together to get to the mountain rescue center.
Happily Adopted: By Mayor Robert.
Heartwarming Orphan: Despite spending years without a family, she's still a wholesome individual.
Hero Worshiper: She is this towards Penny Morris.
Jumped at the Call: When Norman gets stuck on the roof in the episode "Emmeline to the rescue", Emmeline is quick to come to his rescue. But she doesn't realize that she shouldn't do rescues without training.
Kid detective: A few episodes involve her doing detective work, such as finding a (non-existent) burglar and tracking down a stolen test answer key.
Kid Hero: She is considered both a "Junior First Responder" and a "Playground Rescuer" as this is where most of her rescues take place, as well as occasionally joining Penny for rescues.
Nice Girl - While she can be uptight and sometimes tough, she is a fair individual who won't shy away from helping.
Not so above it all: Despite being the kid who knows nearly everything there is to know about health and safety, she has her moments of making unsafe decisions, such as attempting rescues she isn't trained to do or using the fire hose after Penny told her not to.
Odd place to sleep: Emmeline's narcolepsy causes her to sometimes fall asleep in strange places when she doesn't have her medication, on a cliff or a snowbank.
Only sane man - Among most of the kids, Emmeline is often the voice of reason, alongside James.
Sleepyhead - In the episode "Night Shift" Emmeline is seen frequently falling asleep at inconvenient times. This is later revealed to be caused by narcolepsy.
Spoiled sweet: While enjoying the luxuries that come with being the mayor's daughter, Emmeline is still a hard worker. In one episode, she turns down the idea of getting her dad involved in a problem because this is something for them to figure out.
The Captain: When there's an emergency on the schoolyard, Emmeline is the first to direct the others as the captain of the Recess Rescue Crew.
The Medic - Among the children, she even has a first-aid kit on her waist.
Trademark Favorite Food: Peanut butter, she even keeps a small jar of the stuff in her bag.
Uncertified Expert: Despite being too young for the rescue team, Emmeline is an expert in health and safety.
"Well done, son." Guy: She'll take any opportunity she can to make Penny proud of her.
Why Did It Have To Be Snakes?: Emmeline's reaction to realizing Trevor runs the Pontypandy Pioneers. This is due to her unexplainable fear of men.

I stand next to Nancy, my brother and his friends in front of us as we watch Will's funeral service. A solemn atmosphere surrounds us as we stand around the casket that holds Will's body.
"Just wait 'till we tell Will that Jennifer Hayes was crying at his funeral," Dustin snickers to his friends, pointing at the crying girl.
"Shut up, Dustin," I whisper kicking his foot lightly before turning my attention back to the man speaking.
"Ow!" Dustin whines, bringing his leg up to rub it, stumbling in the process.
"Shhhh." Mrs. Wheeler leans down to shush my brother.
I drop my white rose into the ground where Will's casket lies and embrace Jonathan to offer my support.
"Hey," I give the boy a gentle smile after pulling away from our hug.
"Hi, thanks for coming." He says softly before shoving his hands in his suit pockets.
"Of course." I say as I move over to Joyce and gently rub her shoulder lovingly, noticing she wouldn't appreciate a hug at the moment.
"Hey, Joyce." I say, "I'm always here if you need anything, okay?" She only offers a small nod in return.
Nancy slowly approaches Jonathan and I and we silently walk together, sitting by a near fence where headstones sit within.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
This is where we know for sure it's been, right?" Jonathan says, showing Nancy and I a map of Hawkins.
"So that's..." I say pointing at the x on the paper in front of us.
"Steve's house." Jonathan confirms with a nod, "And that's the woods where they found Will's bike and... that's my house." Jonathan continues, pointing at the paper.
"It's all so close." Nancy comments and I shift nervously on the ground, looking towards the woods surrounding us.
"Yeah. Exactly." Jonathan says.
"I mean, that's gotta be all within a mile or something." I say, glancing back at the two.
"Whatever this thing is, it's not traveling far." Jonathan finishes with a determined expression as he glances at Nancy and I.
"You want to go out there." Nancy concludes looking back at Jonathan.
"We might not find anything." Jonathan replies with a sigh.
"We found something." I say gesturing between Nancy and I and Jonathan nods.
"And if we do see it..." Nancy adds, "Then what?”
"We kill it."
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Jonathan leads Nancy and I over to a car, opens the passenger side door and starts picking the lock of the glove box.
"What are you doing?" I ask confused, crossing my arms nervously.
"Just give me a second..." Jonathan says as Nancy and I look around uncomfortably.
Jonathan successfully picks the lock, pulling out a gun, checking at the components and stuffing the extra bullets into his pockets.
"Are you serious?" Nancy asks, looking around again to make sure nobody can see us.
"What? You want to find this thing and take another picture?" Jonathan asks sarcastically, "Yell at it?" He gets out of the car, shutting the door behind him.
"This is a terrible idea." Nancy says, tugging her jacket tighter.
"Yeah, well, it's the best we've got." Jonathan replies shoving the gun in his jacket pocket and Nancy rolls her eyes, "What? You can tell someone, but they're not gonna believe you." He adds.
"You know that."
"Your mom would." I pipe up, trying to break the tension between the two.
"She's been through enough, (Y/n)." Jonathan says sadly.
"She deserves to know." I continue and Nancy glances at me, nodding her head in agreement.
"Yeah, and I'll tell her..." Jonathan says determinedly.
"When this thing is dead.”
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Standing alongside Jonathan in the woods, gun in hand, I aim at the cans in front of me. With a click and a loud shot, I hit three cans dead center. I turn to Jonathan a smug look on my face, and he chuckles before checking his watch for the fifth time.
"Calm down, lover boy." I say, crossing my arms, "She's on her way." Jonathan shakes his head with a chuckle and takes the gun from me, walking up to where I just stood.
Taking aim at the cans, Jonathan fires off multiple shots, only to miss each one. He lowers the gun with a sigh, frustrated with his failure.
"You're supposed to hit the cans, right?" Nancy says, walking over to Jonathan and I with a baseball bat in hand.
"No, actually, you see the spaces in between the cans?" Jonathan says sarcastically, "I'm aiming for those."
"Ah," Nancy replies, setting down her bag and bat.
"You ever shot a gun before?" Jonathan asks.
Nancy scoffs.
"Have you met my parents?" Nancy asks jokingly and Jonathan laughs.
"Yeah, I haven't shot one since I was ten. My dad took me hunting on my birthday." Jonathan explains, "He made me kill a rabbit."
"A rabbit?" I ask softly, kicking the dirt beneath my feet.
"Yeah. I guess he thought it would make me more of a man or something." Jonathan says, "I cried for a week."
"Jesus." Nancy whispers, shoving her hands in the pockets of her jacket.
"What? I'm a fan of Thumper." Jonathan says, shrugging and I chuckle lightly.
"I meant your father." Nancy says, looking at Jonathan sadly.
"Yeah..." Jonathan replies, "I guess he and my mother loved each other at some point, but..." He cocks the gun, "I wasn't around for that part."
"Welcome to the club." I sigh, glancing at the ground.
Nancy gestures towards the gun in Jonathan's hand, eager to take her turn shooting at the cans.
"Um, yeah" Jonathan says and gently hands her the gun, "Just, uh, point and shoot. (Y/n) caught on pretty quickly."
"You could say I'm a natural," I comment with a light smile.
"Of course," Nancy returns my smile and adjusts her grip on the gun, "I don't think my parents ever loved each other." She adds returning to Jonathan's previous point.
"They must've married for some reason." Jonathan says, looking at the girl with all too familiar eyes.
There's something there.
"My mom was young. My dad was older," Nancy begins, aiming the gun, "But he had a cushy job, money, came from a good family. So they bought a nice house at the end of the cul-de-sac and started their nuclear family." She finishes, gripping the gun tightly.
"Screw that." I say crossing the arms.
"Yeah, screw that." Nancy agrees before releasing the trigger, hitting the can dead on.
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
Nancy, Jonathan, and I walk through the forest, each of us carrying our weapon of choice. Jonathan grasps the baseball bat that Nancy had brought, while Nancy held the gun. And I carried a crowbar I found in the top shelf in my garage.
"You never said what I was saying." Nancy says quietly as we're walking.
"What?" Jonathan exhales.
"Yesterday." Nancy replies casually, "You said we were saying something and that's why you took our pictures."
"Oh uh, I don't know," Jonathan mutters to the ground before Nancy turns to glance at the boy, urging him to go on.
"I guess, I saw this girl, you know, trying to be someone else," Jonathan says to Nancy sincerely, "But for that moment, it was like you were alone, or you thought you were. And you know, you could just be yourself." He finishes glancing at Nancy for her reaction.
"That is such bullshit." She replies.
"What?" Jonathan says, stopping, Nancy walks ahead before turning back around to face us.
"I am not trying to be someone else." She says taking a couple steps towards Jonathan and I, "Just because I'm dating Steve and you don't like him—"
"You know what? Forget it." Jonathan comments, walking ahead, "I just thought it was a good picture." He adds.
"He's actually a good guy." Nancy says, trying to defend herself. She didn't need to but she did anyway.
"Okay," Jonathan stammers.
"Yesterday with the camera... He's not like that, at all." Nancy says walking inline with Jonathan now, "He was just being protective." She shrugs.
"Yeah, I've been friends with him all my life. He's always been a good guy." I say and Nancy gestures in me direction sending a pointed look a Jonathan almost to say 'see', "He just gets in with the wrong people sometimes." I mumble, kicking the leaves beneath my feet again.
"Yeah, that's one way to put it," Jonathan sasses.
"Oh, and I guess what you did was okay?" Nancy retorts.
"No, I never said that." Jonathan says quickly.
"He had every right to be pissed—" Nancy starts, frustrated. I stay back letting them work out their differences. Even if I did have opinions.
"Okay, alright," Jonathan cuts her off frantically, "Does that mean I have to like him?" He asks turning to look at her again.
"No." She replies.
"Listen, don't take it so personally, okay?" Jonathan says angrily, "I don't like most people. He's in the vast majority." He shrugs before walking ahead again.
"You know, I was actually starting to think that you were okay." Nancy says stopping in place.
"Yeah?" Jonathan says back.
"Yeah." Nancy confirms, "Yeah, I was thinking, "Jonathan Byers" maybe he's not the pretentious creep everyone says he is."
"Guys..." I whisper, being ignored, I shove my hands in my pockets and let the argument play out.
"Well, I was just starting to think you were okay." Jonathan replies walking back towards Nancy again, who's mouth turns into an "o" shape, egging the boy on, "I was thinking, "Nancy Wheeler" she's not just another suburban girl who thinks she's rebelling by doing exactly what every other suburban girl does. Until that phase passes and they marry some boring one-time jock, who now works sales, and they live out a perfectly boring little life at the end of a cul-de-sac. Exactly like their parents, who they thought were so depressing, but now, hey, they get it." Jonathan breaths out before scoffing and walking away for the last time.
I cast one last sympathetic look towards Nancy before jogging up to Jonathan. Together, we walk in silence, Nancy not far behind us.
"What was I saying?" I whisper curiously, "In my picture?"
Jonathan looks up at me in question and I nod confirming I would like to know.
"Uh, you were saying that you wanted nothing more than to be with this guy, but you can't, so you hide away. But it was like, that moment, made you realize that when you're next to him it feels so right." He says truthfully, trudging along beside me.
"Oh..." I felt exposed, Jonathan knew exactly what and who he was talking about. Which made me feel like he saw straight through me, the rough exterior easily cracked with a single picture.
"Yeah, I'm really sorry, (Y/n)," Jonathan says sincerely, "I shouldn't have taken that."
"Hey, it's okay. And don't worry," I say glancing back at Nancy, "She'll come around."
☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆
As the sun set, casting a dark blanket over the woods, the three of us walk in-line with each other. However, the tension between Jonathan and Nancy is still so thick, you could probably cut it with a knife.
Just as we thought all was quiet, a noise suddenly comes from afar, causing me to flinch lightly. Nancy and I exchange a glance and come to a halt, looking around. Jonathan unaware, continues walking until he notices the two of us are stopped.
"What are you tired?" Jonathan turns, asking sarcastically.
"Shut up." Nancy responds, looking around the forest.
"What?" Jonathan says, confused with our actions.
"I heard something..." Nancy whispers.
We hear a whimpering noise, slow and distant, causing us to head cautiously in it's direction until we discover its source. We find an injured, bloodied dear lying on the ground in front of us. It's labored breathing and pained cries makes my heart sink.
"Oh my god..." I whisper, clasping my hand over my mouth.
Nancy has a distraught look on her face before her kneels down in front of the deer. Jonathan sighs and glances towards my teary eyes, touching my shoulder lightly, before bringing his hand back to his side.
"It's been hit by a car," Nancy says softly. The deer lifts it's head slightly before continuing to whimper, "We can't just leave it." Nancy whispers as she slowly holds up the gun.
"I'll do it." Jonathan says confidently.
A few silent tears run down my cheeks.
"I thought you said—" Nancy starts, hesitant.
"I'm not nine anymore." Jonathan replies as Nancy slowly hands him the gun and stands up next to me, rubbing my back comfortingly.
As Jonathan cocks the gun, ready to end the deer's suffering, Nancy and I cling to each other tightly, not wanting to witness the violence. Just as Jonathan prepares to pull the trigger, the deer is violently dragged away, leaving us to stumble backward as we stare at the empty spot where the deer once lay.
"What was that?" I ask breathlessly, clutching my crowbar tight.
"I don't know..." Nancy replies, just as breathless. She starts walking forward, flashlight in hand, following the trail of blood and Jonathan and I trail close behind her.
The trail of blood suddenly stops in an opening in the woods. The three of us looking around frantically, searching for the thing that snatched the deer.
"Where'd it go?" I ask whipping my flashlight around to shine through the trees.
"I don't know," Jonathan replies, confused, "Do you guys see anymore blood?" He asks, pointing his gun.
"No." Nancy and I reply at the same time.
My eyes suddenly spot a drop of blood trailing onto a nearby tree branch. Curious, I wander off in that direction, and discover a tree with an opening covered in a gooey substance. Kneeling down to get a closer look, I reach out and touch it, only for the substance to stick between my fingers. Stretching as I pull them apart.
"Ew..." I whisper to myself. I then notice the trail of blood leading into the tree.
"Nancy?" I call out and look behind me, where my friends once were, "Jonathan?"
"Shit... Here goes nothing." I say, before slowly crawling into the tree.
After squeezing my way out of the opening, slime covers my skin. With my crowbar firmly in hand, I raise it nervously at the sound of a disturbing noise nearby. Hesitantly moving forward, my eyes land on a horrifying scene, so unexpected that I draw in a sharp breath.
"Holy shit."

Interesting nuggets in this DM article on Harold's BFF: Prince Harry's 'best friend': The hired security guard who has had lonely royal's back for more than a decade - including on THAT trip to Las Vegas and Meghan Markle's star-studded New York baby shower Harold's BFF is the former Met protection office that accompanied him on his many dissolute outings pre-Megs, including Vegas naked billiards. He quit the official gig in 2022 (after getting a service medal from the late Queen) and now is Harold's very expensive private security.I have to say it seems a bit pathetic that your BFF is a guy you pay thousands a day for over-the-top security, but I'm not a paranoid self-centered dim wastral with zero financial acumen so what do I know.I wonder whether this is the guy Harold wrote about punching in Spare? Or the guy who forced some taxi driver to speed through the Paris streets so Harold could recreate his mother's last moments? And this little bit thrown in at the end caught my eye:Harry is said to spend his days doing school runs and going on bike rides with his security staff, with growing resentment at the Sussexes' public image in contrast to that of his brother and sister in law, the Prince and Princess of Wales. One old friend last month told The Times how Harry is now a 'very angry boy', adding: 'Anyone who knows him feels he'd rather be top of the pops here with everyone loving him, as they do with William and Kate.' Is anyone surprised at the idea that Harold's resentment and jealousy of his brother still burns bright? That he thinks the little people should adore him?I think we all recognize this face next to partying Harold in 2011. I just had not realized how quite long he has been with Harold and Megs.https://ift.tt/wdBf1n4 to add: I think this is Langdown (in the hat) with Harold in Vegas in 2012. link to article about Harold and his close protection in Vegas: https://ift.tt/o6bOfuF post link: https://ift.tt/fAbp1ea author: Von_und_zu_ submitted: September 14, 2024 at 02:27PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. Viewers turning in for the track and field events at the Summer Games in Paris next week might just do a double-take: Instead of the usual rust-colored reddish hue, the track is purple.
The new, eye-catching color will serve as the backdrop for runners competing at the Stade de France, the country’s largest stadium, located in the northern Paris suburb of Saint-Denis. The track is made by Mondo, a company based in Alba, Italy, that has made every track used at the Olympics since 1976.
The color was mainly an aesthetic choice, as purple, blue and green make up the palette for the competition venues at this year’s games. The design actually incorporates three separate colors: lavender for the track itself, darker purple for the service areas and gray for the exterior curves at each end.
Even the glue used to adhere the track to its asphalt base—2,800 pots in total—is purple, just in case any becomes visible.
“The big part of the job was to come up with a track that was different from what we had seen … to go a little bit outside the box,” says Alain Blondel, an Olympic decathlete who now serves as the sports manager for the Paris games, to Olympics.com’s Nicolas Kohlhuber.
This is the first time an Olympic track has been purple. But it’s not uncommon for athletics venues around the world to play around with color. For example, since 1986, Boise State University has famously eschewed the traditional green-colored turf for its football field, opting instead for a shocking shade of bright blue.
Color aside, the Paris track is unique for several other reasons. For one, it incorporates the shells of bivalve mollusks, like mussels and clams. Ahead of the games, track-maker Mondo began partnering with a mussel farming and fishing company called Nieddittas to give used shells a second life.
Staff at Nieddittas harvest, clean and prepare the shells—which are made primarily of calcium carbonate—so they can be ground into a powder that can be incorporated into the track material. The shells would have otherwise been headed to a landfill, so the process transforms waste into something useful. It also reduces the need for mining, which is how manufacturers usually obtain calcium carbonate.
All told, 50 percent of the Paris track comes from recycled materials, reports BBC’s Padraig Belton.
This innovative use of recycled natural materials aligns with the goals of the International Olympic Committee, which vowed to make the Summer Games in Paris the most sustainable Olympics yet. Other sustainability efforts include bike parking at many venues, more plant-based food options for spectators, 100 percent locally sourced renewable energy, a geothermal cooling system at the Olympic Village and aquatic center seats made from recycled plastic bottle caps, among many others.
The track’s design and materials may also help athletes perform their best. The Paris track has the same base as the one used at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, with some minor modifications, per reporting by Reuters’ Manuel Ausloos and Vincent Daheron. At those games, athletes set three world records and 12 Olympic records—and officials expect even more records to fall next week in Paris.
“The first indications are that it will be a very, very good track,” Blondel told the Associated Press’ (AP) Jerome Pugmire in April. “If we see athletes with personal bests on the scoreboard, it means we did a good job.”
For this iteration of the track, Mondo researchers improved upon the new polymeric material first introduced in Tokyo. They also used computer algorithms to further refine the optimal shape and size of the air bubbles within the lower layer of the track, which help absorb and then rebound the energy from the runner’s foot striking the ground.
The vulcanized rubber provides good grip and resistance for Paralympic athletes who use wheelchairs and prosthetics. The track has also been specially designed to complement the latest generation of running shoes.
“For the track, we only see the aesthetics, but there is great work that goes into the underlayer,” says Alessandro Piceli, a research and development manager at Mondo, to the Guardian’s Sean Ingle.
Mondo leaders say the Paris track will be 2 percent faster than the one used in Tokyo, per the BBC. But, in 2020, runners also got a boost from hot temperatures and new shoe spike technology, per the Guardian. It remains to be seen how the track will affect athletes’ times, but its creators are confident we will see records fall in Paris.
“The athletes will find this track to be more reactive and better suited for their competition,” said Maurizio Stroppiana, vice president of Mondo’s sport division, to the AP’s Andrew Dampf and Luca Bruno in March.

Pecka volunteering project
🌻Activity title: Volunteering for the Pecka Outdoor Festival
🌻Duration and time: 7 days
🌻Date: 3rd of July to 10th of July
🌻Type of activity: Service
Activity description
Tumblr media
Pecka Outdoor Festival is a festival organized at the Pecka Visitor Centar. The main idea is to interest people in spending time outdoor, either hiking, biking, mushroom picking or canyoning. Me and my friends found out about this festival last year when someone sent an invitation for volunteers. We applied that year, and we came back this year. We mostly prepare the centar for the arrival of people. We paint what needs to be painted, we mow the lawn, we clean the forests around the center of any fallen trees that could hurt people... When the festival starts we have other obligations. We either help in the kitchen or work as sellers for the products the Centar has to offer. This year we also helped organize the camp and the parking as well as prepared most our meals by ourselves.

🌻Reflection:
This festival is the reason I fell in love with volunteering. it is interesting how much you actually work but still are able to feel happy and satisfied. I feel like this is the time of the year where I manage to rest the most, because while working you have to be focused solely on the thing in hand, which doesn't allow me to spiral and get lost in my thoughts. Another theory of mine is that this place simply has a special kind of energy to it. Everybody here is so relaxed, kind but at the same time hard-working because the love they have for nature brings these people together. It is also one of the rare opportunities to meet travellers that live this way, hear a different perspective on life and practice my language skill. I will forever be grateful for the luck I had to run into an experience as this one. This festival brought some of the best people into my life and helped me see life in a different light where not all is black and white. It also made me realize that you should always take the chance, because if I never went there alone I wouldn't have met some wonderful people.

High Score Pinball + Game On; Spring 2021 & Spring 2022.
If you were an Eighties child, the video game was the pinnacle of your childhood. On Saturdays, my dad took me to the toy store where I sprinted to the game wall, have me choose any stamped ticket and hand it over the counter to customer service where they stocked all the solid state cartridges in the back. They’d hand me the game of choice and I was golden until next week. If I was lucky, he’d take us to Nunley’s Carousel in Baldwin where it was the final time in my life I’d play old electromagnetic machines and driving games that ran on paper sheets - and even film reels and plastic parts (Atari’s F1). We’d also go to Nathan’s in Oceanside. It, too, had an arcade there. Once we came back from his dietician or from my half-sister in Bensonhurst, he ended up taking the whole family for sit-in Chinese and to the Nellie Bly Amusement Park where for one time only I played Atari’s Superman and Hercules pinball tables.
Sunday was an even bigger event. My pop would drive from (also) Bensonhurst all the way out to Long Island where my family and I lived. He’d arrive anywhere between noon to 1PM and stay for an hour before taking me to the South Shore Mall. I’d have the luxury of two hours and $5.00 worth of quarters to play as many games as I could. Roadblasters, Space Harrier, Chase HQ, Marble Madness, skee ball - you name it, they had it, I played it. Pop would break it up and take me to The Emporium (later becoming Nathan’s and after that a sushi house that closed down in 2010) where they also had an arcade itself. Same time limit, same amount of pocket change. The neighborhood delis and convenience stores also had arcade and pinball machines where I clearly remember playing Seicross, Legion, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi, and other games too many to mention. I had the best of both worlds at home and beyond. By the time my grade-school years ended, I replenished the game collection my dad once sold for $50.00 and more thanks to my Dallas aunt and uncle.
The Brentwood era just started for me and Pop had a heart attack while watching the game. He woke up out of it but later relapsed and that was the end for him. I had to take it upon myself to ride my bike to the mall or the pizzeria in the local shopping center behind the middle school to get my Neo-Geo, Super Monaco GP, or Mortal Kombat fix. With reward came risk: Brentwood wasn’t a safe neighborhood compared to the others. Every day I worried about random newjacks and youngbucks coming up to me for handouts just for being seen. Seven or eight kids waiting their turn surrounded the Street Fighter machines at any one of three stores out of fifteen who had them; some even got jumped and assaulted over them because they were caught cheating. Chain-snatchers got the unsuspecting kids when their backs were turned, and even the resting bitch-faces came up to entice me to fight their boyfriends who tried stealing my bike.
As time went by, I moved on from the scummy parts. Visits to the arcades became less frequented no matter at the mall or the amusement park. The carousels and hot dog places went out of business. Console gaming, however, kept going with the Genesis, SNES, Dreamcast, and Playstation throughout my community college and Stony Brook era. I discovered MAME and VPinball so I could stay in touch with myself. I kept it all going until I was sick of dozing off and throwing my time away while my friends, co-workers, and associates made the best of theirs. I finally moved on from gaming, and all the best for it.
It was more than ten years since I played a game of pinball. The Sopranos to be exact. Almost no place on the island where one was to be found. But that all changed last spring when the Video Game Trading Post opened up Long Island’s very first pinball arcade in the South Shore Mall / Westfield. I was stunned and paralyzed. We never asked for it, let alone couldn’t even imagine happening, but we got it. We lost Manhattan’s Modern Pinball and Greenpoint’s Sunshine Laundromat was never the same after the pandemic, so having the arcade return (to the very place where it all started for me and not having to travel to the city for it) was the pale-skinned redheaded Godiva riding on the fucking horse.
It was amazement at first sight. I enter the mall and the sounds emanating from the dark space tells me I’m close. I finally found it. My soul pushed back because I couldn’t believe it. I walk in and the darkness swallowed me in as all the flashing lights, LEDS, and the brightly-lit back-panels fight to be noticed. For $25.00, sometimes $35.00, it was all-you-can-play. I walk around in the dark vortex and the place was huge of its concrete flooring and aromatic wood smell. All three Black Knight tables, all three Pinbots, both Firepowers, Bank Shot, Evel Knievel, Harlem Globetrotters, Tron Legacy, even Police Force when it was at Vinardo’s. I spotted Big Guns, a game I remember from my Nintendo childhood. To my amusement, it was real having to find that Slugfest returned to the exact same mall I played at during the Brentwood era. The best part? Learning that both High Speed and Nine Ball would make their stay. It would make that next return trip all the more urgent. High Speed was the very first machine I ever scored a million on, let alone three. And Nine Ball? The overall design and sound effects of it was a personal must-play for me.
All throughout last Spring and Summer I’d make the effort to be the first one there and the last one to leave. Noon to 8PM. I made one final trip to High Score- before the year was over, leaving it behind in its former incarnation forever. It’s now half of what it used to be. The other half is now home gaming and memorabilia. I knew it would never be as good after when I first found it and won’t expect it to be better. But I’ll never, ever forget it - just like I’ll never forget the ride to Williamsburg’s Rough Trade, the post-punk / d.i.y. and jazz-fusion finds, the Jewish girl from Queens with the straight shoulder-length hair and green eyes who asked me if I had a copy of KIDS, or the two pale gingers with brown eyes I spent forever with at my store. Another day, another payout.
The alignments had another card up its sleeve. The King of Diamonds would be super-ceded by the Ace. The Boy Harsher show was less than two weeks away and I had to visit the Smithhaven Mall to find me a leather jacket and black hat. I walked out with the hat but no jac-. And, as I was walking out, something caught my eye: a shiny colorful array of neon lights. I stop to look at my right and there it was: a new video arcade I never knew existed. I was shut. I step in and to my immediate right was Baby Pac-Man: a cabinet shaped like an upright with a CRT monitor and small pinball playfield below it. It was a machine I only read about but was curious to seek out. Now, here it is. But, I couldn’t go any further as entry was roped off. But I see the sign at the front desk: $20.00 free play all day. It’s 3PM, I wouldn’t get my money’s worth. But I owed it to myself to come back and visit, and visit I did.
The following Wednesday I came back at noon and paid the frail emo casualty up front my $20.00. Does he have any idea what he’s doing here or what this is all about? He wouldn’t care, really. He’s only here to collect and will elicit a fake half-enthusiastic “oh, uh…that’s cool!” when asked. I’m here to revisit my Atari / Nintendo childhood. Eight hours and no time to waste. Let’s have it.
I walk in and there’s three Pac-Man machines grouped together: the 1980 original that became the first-ever character franchise, Baby Pac-Man and Super Pac-Man. Across from it is Ms. Pac-Man. How shameful they couldn’t include her in the boys’ club. There were vector games in Tempest, Lunar Lander, Asteroids, and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back in super-sharp and blindingly bright on original CRT monitors. There was Gorf, arguably my very first arcade memory living in Brooklyn. Classics such as Centipede, Marble Madness and Spy Hunter which I haven’t played in its true form since forever. Defender, Robotron 2084, and Berzerk rounded out three of four parts of the Williams epic (Blaster was the fourth). Moon Patrol, Galaxian, Zaxxon, Gyruss, Phoenix, Dig Dug, Vanguard, and Missile Command - games I played endlessly on the home system - were there. Crystal Castles, one I always played on the Atari 2600, felt super-frantic and ultra-responsive on my first time ever playing it. Pengo and Mr. Do! - two games I remember my sis- B-Bomb telling me about - were finally crossed off the must-play list.
I found two extremely rare Nintendo Vs. red tents and with that came Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, Punch Out, Popeye, and the original Super Mario Bros. which I always used to play at the neighborhood deli (thanks ma’). Even more impressive was the fact that they had Playchoice machines when the South Shore Mall had them. I walk further and there’s Bad Dudes and the first Double Dragon: agonizingly slow and sluggish as fuck like I remembered it.
There’s driving games such as Super Sprint, Crazy Taxi, Chase HQ, and The Cruisin’ series. But, none more important than Sega’s Hang-On and Outrun, one which my younger bro- and I fought over to play first when our parents took us to the ice cream parlor. Next to those were Virtua Cop and Point Blank which I had zero interest playing because it wasn’t Cheyenne.
Konami, known for some of the best multi-player titles ever, made their presence felt with Super Contra, The Simpsons, Sunset Riders, X-Men, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; the final being the gateway and the token example of nostalgia. There was the fighters’ row: Mortal Kombat II, Virtua Fighter, Tekken 4, Killer Instinct, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, and Street Fighter II; that final one the basis of my early Brentwood years hanging out in dangerous neighborhoods and being harassed by the youngbucks in pizzerias for quarters. How about not one, not - fuck it - four Neo-Geo MVS’s with such games as Metal Slug 4, Ninja Warriors, Fatal Fury 2, and Samurai Shodown all plugged in and more. Three of those four aforementioned Neo-Geo games all happened during various points of my Brentwood era, coincidentally at the same shopping center as the pizzeria and that down-low mom-and-pop video store in Central Islip.
There were pinball tables such as Spider-Man, Stranger Things, and Star Wars: Episode 1, but couldn’t ever compare to what High Score used to have. Foosball, (a rare) Super Chexx, a Ms. Pac-Man & Galaga cocktail machine, and even Alley Cats: a shuffleboard-slash-bowling hybrid were found. Never played anything like it. Sports-themed uprights in NBA Jam, NHL Ice, and Blades Of Steel which I played all of three minutes before walking away from it and headed for Arkanoid: Revenge Of Doh. I was even taken back by seeing games I never knew existed: Warp Warp and Lady Bug. And finally…Smash TV. I wasted an hour of my valuable life on cheap deaths and repetitious gameplay. I’ll never ever recommend it.
I look above and there was a scoreboard with all the high scores and initials written in chalk. Twin Galaxies this wasn’t and thankfully there were no Billy Mitchell sightings. Another thing up above us was a mural of Blaze, Axel, and Adam of Sega’s Streets Of Rage, deemed one of the best and most successful side-scrolling beat ‘em-ups ever. Further back of the arcade I found a bar set-up and a big projector screen behind it for anyone wanting to play Mario Kart on the big-screen. I looked hard enough to find authentic original operator’s manuals of Jungle Hunt, Centipede, Xevious, Asteroids, and Missile Command framed and hung on the wall. I also laserdiscs also framed and hung on the wall near the arcades storefront. Flashdance, License To Drive, Vision Quest, and - I kid you not - Dirty Dancing. Which reminded me…where the hell were Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace? And no Eighties’ fantasy world wouldn’t be complete without at least two small CRT TV’s set up to play Super Mario Bros. 3 and E.T. It was the perfect set-up found in millions of kid’s rooms everywhere. And they still weren’t done.
The one thing Game On had that High Score Pinball didn’t, and this is the major validator here, was the Eighties soundtrack streamed on the overhead. High Score- only had the natural sound of licensed one-liners, PCBs, electromagnetics, and solid states emanating all the bells and hard solenoid knocks of free games. Only once had they brought out a portable speaker blasting Ozzy’s Nineties hits and alternative. Not Game On. Every song was an unforgettable Eighties throwback. It had to be to fit within the nostalgic theme of gaming’s wonder years of the very-late Seventies to the mid-Nineties.
The Seventies will always be something I’ll explore because it’s a decade I mostly missed out on. Exploring and discovering obscure jazz / fusion, soul, groove, and the hits are all a product of my fascination with hip-hop and rap’s sampling culture, console gaming, money shows, chyrons, station i.d.’s, production logos, opening and closing credits, and promos-. The Eighties were different because I lived through them 100% and still remember it clear as day. I can appreciate new wave, synthpop, the new romantics, Billboard hits, freestyle, radio plays, hair metal, and anything else I listened to as part of my Atari / Nintendo childhood. The arcade’s streaming playlist (could they not afford a cassette player?) was paired with the many original arcade cabinets of their time and served its nostalgic purpose, as intended, to its full unbeatable meaning.
With almost every song played on the overhead there were more childhood memories that followed them. J. Geils Band’s “Centerfold” was my first-ever music memory when my other half-sister played it constantly on our turntable in our family’s second-floor Borough Park apartment. The night my dad threw the Christmas tree out on the porch and my ma’ taking both my younger brother and I to stay at gramma’s for a few days. Riding in the passenger’s seat of our white rusted ‘78 Cadillac Coupe Deville and the bubbled rainbow that formed at the top of its windshield. Being stuck on the side of the Southern State Parkway heading home as my younger bro- and I rode in the backseat with toy dashboards. The trips in my parents rusty beige Chevy van where its crusty steel interior and the smell of petrichor created a viciously sickening mess. The two ‘79 yellow and blue AMC VAM Pacer X’s my parents had. Hurricane Gloria and the week-long power outage. Friday night’s Miami Vice. Saturday afternoons spent in the basement playing Atari and watching WWF and NWA. Saturday night’s Golden Girls where the whole family died laughing. Sunday’s Long Island pop station WBLI’s Top Ten countdown on public access television. Our babysitter’s daughter who was the cutest thing of curly black hair, dark eyes, and tall stature who smelled like sparkle and white plush. My bro- and I taking apart our ma’s floral-print couches and making pillow forts out of them. Dad’s in-wall Akai eight-track player and the overhead speakers. Easter’s various assortment of sweet-smelling wax crayons and activity books. Nights spent watching New York Yankee games on PIX, New York Rangers on MSG, Night Flight and Dance Party USA. Family dinner night at Enzo’s in Bay Shore for minestrone, calzones, and newspaper clippings of Italy’s World Cup victories. Assholes in Chams tank-tops smoking in their garages while working on their prized ‘77 Trans Ams. Playing NES all night before getting ready to ride to Staten Island at three in the morning to pick up my dad’s side of the family.
The more I played the more I immersed myself back into familiar territory that I haven’t visited in decades. It’s an absolute rarity when all the right authentic elements that used to be come together as one and re-create a near-perfect rendition of what the Eighties felt like. It’s not just the soundtrack, the manuals and laserdiscs that supplanted the setting, but the actual aesthetic itself. See the decals on the side of the cabinets and the built-in one-of-a-kind joysticks and steering wheels. The amazing control panel artwork. Plenty of CRT monitors and their rasterized graphics, scanlines, ripples, burn-in, and scrambled graphical glitches. Buttons, plenty of buttons of all types. And no more having to bang on the steel coin doors when those quarters got jammed. Not a burn mark in sight and the smell of old wood cabinets filled the room - exactly how I remembered it all.
It was nearing 9PM. The trip back in time was about to end and the mall was finally winding down. I had to have one last game in before having to walk off memory lane and say goodbye. That idiot kid wasn’t there but was replaced by some cute skinny hipster girl punk with pink hair and ladened with piercings, eager to talk to any cliched grown-up punk dad or fading former Gen-X’er wanting to share a story or two about how they missed those simpler days. I’ll never get the spirit and being of the Eighties back, but I no longer miss them now that I have a monthly pilgrimage to Game On. I retire for the night and head out. She unhooks the velvet rope and clears the way for me to leave with a smile.

i already know a couple of them but am dying to know more about the wedding date one!! also i live and die for pt trainer bradley so 🤫
I wasn't sure which wedding date one you wanted (because there are two because I have no chill) so I did both!! and a lil info about trainer bradley!!
the wedding date fic:
this is an idea I had ages ago that I sent to @theharddeck in this ask that I've since modified. Natasha and Javy are getting married and as their besties, Jake and Bob are obviously part of the wedding.
Jake has decided he's in love with their wedding planner (a friend of Nat's but wasn't sure what her schedule would look like and if she'd be able to be in the wedding so she's helping them plan) but instead of flirting like a normal person he's gone the tugging pigtails and snarky route. he accidentally makes her cry with a comment that was supposed to be a joke. he immediately apologizes and they make up before the wedding, happy ending of them slow dancing at the reception.
Bob on the other hand as Nat's man of honor has become enamored with Javy's best friend and best woman (better name to be thought of I promise). these two are doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to decorating, keeping the family fights away from the happy couple, etc. their night ends with Bob helping her take out her complex hairstyle and unzipping her dress. he takes his sweet time giving her multiple orgasms and then orders room service while she relaxes in the tub.
the wedding date fic (AU VERSION): this is a Bradley AU of the 2005 movie, The Wedding Date (I saw one gifset of Dermot Mulroney in that movie and my brain went !!!!!BRADLEY!!!!) it follows basically the same premise and is very sweet!
pt/trainer!Bradley: my beloved AU. our leading lady tears her ACL in a biking accident (that wasn't her fault) and her doctor was kind enough to get her into the best physical rehab facility in the county - the Metcalf Center! there she meets her very attractive physical therapist, Bradley Bradshaw. they both keep it professional while she's recovering, even as they're lusting for each other internally. but when her rehab course is finished and she's no longer a client??? whoooo boy. *cue the nastiest sex I've ever written*
send me a title (or several!) from my wip list to learn more about them!
