Billie Dove

Bertha Bohny, billed as Billie Dove (b. 14 May 1903- d. 31 December 1997) was a silent film actress and early Hollywood icon, known as “the American Beauty”. She first rose to fame in her teens, when she was hired by Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. to star in his stage shows, in spite of the fact that she could apparently neither sing nor dance well. She became romantically involved with Ziegfeld, who was married at the time to Billie Burke (whom many of you may know as Glinda the Good Witch from the classic, “The Wizard of Oz); Burke landed Dove her first screen role in 1921 in “Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford”. Her beauty rocketed her to fame.

Her acting, however, was at first a bit mediocre and flourished only under directors such as Lois Weber (see previous post). She became better known in 1926 as a result of her work with Weber. This earned her many male admirers, one of whom was bizarre multi-millionaire Howard Hughes; she being young and recently divorced began an affair with him, and was even engaged to him for a short time, but ended the relationship when he became domineering and wished to take over her film career.

In 1932, she had a role in “Blondie of the Follies”, which was reduced greatly and left her feeling discouraged. But for a minor role in the 1962 “Diamond Head”, she never acted again. From 1933 onward, she directed her attention to her two children and her marriage with Robert Kenaston (until his death in 1970). She remarried once more to John Miller, but divorced him not long after.

She died of pneumonia in 1997 at age 94.
