Bern & Thun
First of a few posts from a ten day trip to Switzerland back in 2014, starting with the capital, Bern. I visited on a day trip, focusing on the largely medieval city centre, a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site, dating in part back to the 12th century. Switzerland has a complex but seemingly effective federal government, run out of the Federal Palace (Bundeshaus), which took 45 years to finish…

1781 Katharina Elisabeth Stettler-Brütel by Emanuel Handmann (Bernisches Historisches Museum/Bern Historical Museum Bern - Bern, Switzerland). From tumblr.com/blog/view/sketches-a-la-mode. This is a little retro for 1781 when hair was going curly and bouffant. This is probably a robe à la francaise.

I see you won yourself another argument claiming the age old theory of seeing things in either black or white. I see you discredit our vividness, calling it nothing but absurdity. I see you judge our inquisitiveness, stating it as an ignorance of the known. I see you are quite comfortable in the house of cards you've built, the bubble that gleams. But I hope you know we come bearing strong winds, and pinpricks. I hope you know it won't last long. Your shallowness will surface, no matter how hard you try. There'd come a day when you'd realise it's a bit too dull in the two contrasting bands your life is spent in. We are the ones living in the grey. It'd be quite a change, to fit in. Fit in between. Einstein's Greatest Blunder?
He abandoned the idea of a static, nonexpanding universe in 1929—but some physicists are beginning to reconsider it
One hundred years ago this month, Albert Einstein presented the paper Kosmologische Betrachtungen zur allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie (Cosmological Considerations in the General Theory of Relativity) to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. This paper, published in the Proceedings of the Academy on February 15th 1917, laid the foundations for today’s Big Bang model of the universe.
Only a year before, Einstein had finally completed his great masterpiece, a new theory of gravity, space, and time known as the general theory of relativity. A fundamental tenet of the new theory was that space and time are not absolute, immutable quantities, but are malleable, interdependent and affected by the presence of matter; this behavior was encoded in the field equations of general relativity.
Once completed, it was natural for Einstein to apply his new theory to all of space and time, i.e., to investigate whether general relativity could give a satisfactory model of the universe as a whole. As he remarked in a letter to the Dutch astronomer Willem de Sitter: “For me…it was a burning question whether the relativity concept can be followed through to the finish, or whether it leads to contradictions.” However, he found this no easy task assuming a universe that was static in time. The main difficulty was Einstein’s conviction that a satisfactory model of the universe should reflect both the Principle of Relativity (a principle that demanded that all frames of reference are equivalent) and an assumption he later named Mach’s Principle—that the inertia of a body is determined by the presence of other masses in the universe. (Inertia is a term physicists use to describe the reluctance of a body to move).
