Harold Alexander – Sunshine Man
Harold Alexander’s Sunshine Man exists somewhere in the space between jazz-funk and free improvisation. Produced by Bob Thiele, the record combines Alexander’s intricate, abstract melodies with the wickedly tight drumming of the great Bernard “Pretty” Purdie to create music with both profoundly spiritual and resolutely physical dimensions. Each of the record’s six long songs shun direct paths from points A to B, instead coveting the eccentric twists and hairpin turns of roads less traveled, but the cosmic reach of Alexander’s flute and soprano saxophone never dwarfs the rock-solid support of Purdie and keyboardist Neal Creque. Sunshine Man is the rare record that’s both far-out and funky (Jason Ankeny/AllMusic).

George Clemons grew up in Virginia (Southern USA). During the 60's he moved up to New York and started singing in clubs in Harlem. In 1965 he performed several times at the legendary Apollo Theatre with Don Covay. George sang background vocals on the Don Covay single "Have Mercy". After leaving Don Covay and the Good-Timers, George started his solo career as King George. He recorded "Drive on James" with part of the Ray Charles Band including Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums. About this time George was going around jamming in small clubs (Smalls Paradise, Harlem etc.) with among others the King Curtis Band The Kingpins. On one of those occations, George met Jimi Hendrix. At the time Jimi had left the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. Jimi was playing on and off with King Curtis and Curtis Knight during that period. Jimi and George hung out quite a bit. Together they saw the Mc Coys; George once jammed with Jimi, together with drummer Jimmi Castor (later of Castor Bunch "fame"; George was also present when the Rolling Stones came to see Jimi perform in New York City on 2 July 1966 after the Stones concert at Forest Hills Stadium. Scandinavian agents heard King George and offered him a contract to come to Europe to sing with an all-black soul band, called the Harlem Kiddies. They arrived in Stockholm in 1966 for three months but ended up touring around two years instead. At that time Chas Chandler brought Jimi to England. George was proud of the fact that he did have a contract, while Jimi didn't. Later, of course, it turned out that Jimi did a lot better than him. Jimi and George ran into each other in Scandinavia, where the Harlem Kiddies warmed up for Jimi Hendrix. George met Jimi again when the Experience played in Copenhagen (21 May 1967). George had two bands during the period: the Harlem Kiddies (playing R&B) and the King George Discovery (playing more psychedelic stuff). After that, George met Jimi a few times in Sweden. George claims that he wasn't too found of Noel Redding, but liked Mitch Mitchell a lot more. George also knew Buddy Miles from his Wilson Pickett period, and also met Billy Cox. When George asked Billy where he came from Billy answered, "we're a band of Gypsies, we come from everywhere

Lee Hildebrand: "That Jon Hammond, an obscure B-3 organ player who recently relocated from New York to Berkeley (where he'd grown up ni the 60s), was able to get the famous drummer to fly in for the Kimball's engagement was an impressive feat. Completing
the quartet, which Hammond calls the Late Rent Session Men, were his buddy of
some thirty years, onetime Crusaders and Miles Davis guitarist
Barry Finnerty (who just moved from New York to Oakland), and veteran Bay Area tenor saxophonist Bennett Friedman.
Whether playing swing, shuffle, bossa nova, or funk patterns, Purdie served as a springboard for his cohorts' solos, his sly, surprise-filled accents on chorus turn-arounds lifting them to peak after peak of excitement. Finnerty's scorching, fast-fingered flights unfortunately were obscured in the sound mix till near the end of the often-incendiary ninety-minute set of Hammond originals, but Friedman's muscular, barking hard-bop attack eut through like a switchblade throughout. With his clean, fleet articulation and judicious use of dynamics, Hammond proved a commanding organist of the Jimmy Smith school. His move back to the Bay Area is most welcome, as is Finnerty's."

Ocean's Blues Brothers
Here’s a silly sketch I’m pretty proud of. Mash up of Ocean’s Eleven and music.
INT. DINER - DAY
DANNY Blues sits in a diner booth oozing charm, whipping French fries into his mouth. He is joined by JOHNNY Brothers, a nervous man who constantly fiddles with crap.
JOHNNY
Alright, I'm here, Danny. Against my better judgement, I might add.
DANNY
You're a saint, Johnny.
JOHNNY
You've got until I finish my coffee to tell me what this is all about.
Johnny takes a bit sip of coffee.
DANNY
I'm getting the band back together.
Johnny spits his coffee everywhere.
JOHNNY
Are you nuts? It'll never work, not after what you pulled.
DANNY
You didn't let me finish. I'm getting the band back together for one last heist.
JOHNNY
What?
Johnny takes another big gulp of coffee.
DANNY
We're robbing the Bellagio.
Johnny sprays his coffee everywhere, choking.
JOHNNY
Are you out of your mind? That really will never work. I'll be honest with you, with the first band back together thing, I was ready to be convinced. But us robbing hotels? That. Will. Never. Work.
DANNY
Give me one good reason.
JOHNNY
We're musicians!
DANNY
It's just one last time.
JOHNNY
It's the first time!
DANNY
We'll improvise.
JOHNNY
How?
DANNY
Jazz.
JOHNNY
That's music! We know transposing notes, variation, modulation, riffing on a theme, but like I said, that's music! That's nothing like stealing from a hospitality institution! I mean, that's like, three major felonies.
Johnny takes yet another drink of coffee.
DANNY
Three majors, a major third, what's the difference?
Johnny spews his coffee everywhere.
JOHNNY
A lot! Do you even have a plan?
DANNY
It's airtight.
CUT TO:
INT. CLUB - NIGHT
A man laying down a nasty bass groove in a smoky club, really feeling the music.
DANNY (V.O.)
First, we get our old friend and jazz bass virtuoso Stanley Clarke. Has some of the most interesting yet soulful grooves of any bass player out there. A real student of the form.
Danny walks on stage, whispers in Stanley's ear. Stanley's eyes, which had been closed, pop open in terror as he listens to Danny.
DANNY (V.O.)
He's our getaway driver.
CUT TO:
INT. CAR - DAY
Stanley is behind the wheel of a moving car. He still has his bass on. He frantically tries to drive but just plays bass instead. The car careens off the road and into a ditch.
Long bass note.
DANNY (V.O.)
Next we have Steve Lukather, ace session guitarist.
CUT TO:
INT. STUDIO - DAY
Steve tracks guitar in the studio, big headphones over his ears.
DANNY (V.O.)
He's played on half the hits of the last 40 years.
Danny pulls up one side of Steve's headphones and whispers in his ear. Steve's eyes pop, and he whips his head around.
DANNY (V.O.)
He's our safe cracker.
CUT TO:
INT. SAFE ROOM - DAY
Steve's turn transitions to him in front of a safe. He stares at it for a moment, then half-heartedly spins the dial. He looks around for help.
JOHNNY (V.O.)
I'm about to have a heart attack.
We see a shot of each thing as Johnny lists them.
JOHNNY (V.O.)
The Bellagio is swarming with security guards, has cameras everywhere, fingerprint scanner checkpoints, silent alarms, you name it. How are you even going to get in?
DANNY (V.O.)
That's where drumming legend Bernard Purdie comes in.
CUT TO:
EXT. AUDITORIUM - NIGHT
Bernard Purdie drumming intensely.
DANNY (V.O.)
This guy is so influential he's got a shuffle named after him. His triplets are second to none. He's our distraction.
CUT TO:
INT. CASINO - NIGHT
Bernard in the middle of the casino floor, scared, the center of security guards attention. He slowly slips behind a slot machine.
JOHNNY (V.O.)
And what happens when something inevitably goes wrong?
DANNY (V.O.)
Not a problem, because we have master saxophonist Wayne Shorter as our lookout.
CUT TO:
INT. CLUB - NIGHT
Wayne blasting a sweaty sax solo, eyes squished shut. Danny whispers in his ear and his eyes bug out, blasting more sax.
CUT TO:
EXT. THE BELLAGIO - DAY
Wayne, in the exact same position, in front of the Bellagio, clearly terrified. A crush of cops rush past him into the hotel. As he watches his sax blowing and eyes get bigger until he finally throws his sax and runs the opposite way.
BACK TO:
INT. DINER - DAY
JOHNNY
Time's up, I'm out of coffee.
He turns his coffee cup upside down.
DANNY
Almost there. Finally, we have Rita Jackson, a tambourine player I met at Richmond fifth baptist.
Johnny spits coffee everywhere.
JOHNNY
That was so surprising I spontaneously generated coffee just to spit it! Since when do you go to church?
DANNY
I figured with a big endeavour like this I better get right with God before hand.
JOHNNY
And what job does Rita Jackson have?
CUT TO:
INT. CHURCH - DAY
Rita Jackson, an elderly woman, sitting in a pew. Danny leans over, whispers in her ear. She is utterly scandalized, and whacks him with her tambourine.
BACK TO:
INT. DINER - DAY
DANNY
Rita's out.
JOHNNY
That doesn't that seem like a sign, spiritually.
DANNY
Nothing's perfect.
CUT TO:
INT. CHURCH - DAY
Rita Jackson is totally kicking the crap out of Danny with her tambourine.
BACK TO:
INT. DINER - DAY
DANNY
With your five octave range, and a group of killers like us, all you need to do is walk out with the money.
JOHNNY
We're studio killers, not actual killers.
DANNY
I don't discriminate like that.
JOHNNY
And where are you in all of this?
DANNY
I'm the manager, so I just take 10% off the top.
JOHNNY
Unbelievable.
DANNY
So, what do you say?
JOHNNY
Alright, I'm in.
Danny spits coffee everywhere.

This week’s episode features brand new music from a relatively new voice on the indie pop scene. Juniper Shelly hails from the Garden State and has just released her sophomore album, “She Steals Candy”, featuring a bevy of guest artists and multiple fresh takes on material from a range of writers, including Delbert McClinton, the Bangles, Muffs, and Amy Rigby. We played a couple tracks to kick off the show, and I expect you will hear more in the weeks ahead. Many thanks to the fine folks at Confidential Recordings for providing the music and info about Juniper and her collaborators. The rest of the program is a little bit from Column A, a little bit from Column Z, not unlike most episodes, but one that hangs together pretty well. Let’s get to it...

Doris Troy (born Doris Elaine Higginsen; January 6, 1937 – February 16, 2004) was an R&B singer and songwriter, known to her many fans as "Mama Soul". Her biggest hit was "Just One Look", a top-10 hit. She was one of the four female backup singers on The Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. Under the name Doris Payne, she began songwriting and earned $100 for the Dee Clark hit "How About That". Going into the recording industry, she worked as a backup vocalist for Atlantic Records alongside Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick. She was part of the original lineup of The Sweet Inspirations, with Cissy Houston and the two Warwicks. Taking her stage name from Helen of Troy, she sang backup vocals for Solomon Burke, the Drifters, Houston, and Dionne Warwick, before she co-wrote and recorded"Just One Look". This song hit No. 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Just One Look" was the only charting US hit for her. The song was recorded in 10 minutes, as a demo for Atlantic Records. Atlantic Records heard the demo, and they decided not to re-record it, instead opting to release it as was. The musicians included Ernie Hayes on organ, Wally Richardson on guitar, Bob Bushnell on bass, and Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums. The song has been covered by The Hollies, Faith, Hope & Charity, Major Lance, Linda Ronstadt, Bryan Ferry, Anne Murray, Klaus Nomi, and Harry Nilsson in a duet with Lynda Laurence. Her only foray into the UK Singles Chart, "Whatcha Gonna Do About It", peaked at No. 37. As her solo career peaked, she continued to sing backup for multiple artists and bands. She contributed vocals to The Rolling Stones' 1969 song "You Can't Always Get What You Want", Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon, and Carly Simon's "You're So Vain". She also sang for Humble Pie, Kevin Ayers, Edgar Broughton, George Harrison, Johnny Hallyday, Vivian Stanshall, Dusty Springfield, Nick Drake, and Junior Campbell. #africanhistory #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CnEuuU2LnOA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
