The last Mulsanne !

The last Mulsanne was commissioned by, and built for, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and includes a range of bespoke features to ensure the car was fit for royal duties. The starting point was an exterior in solid Barnato green, paired with an interior in Twine and Cumbrian hide, Burr Walnut wood veneers and deep lambswool carpets.

To this, the specification added rear privacy curtains and the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom inlaid into the door waistrails, while the front centre armrests were removed in lieu of a custom-sized tray to accommodate the Queen’s handbag. Discretely concealed blue police lights, a siren and a bullhorn were also installed, with a dedicated switch panel hidden beneath a walnut-veneered door behind the gear lever.

Bentley’s iconic 394kW 6.75-litre V8 engine, 21” alloy wheels and chrome brightware for the grille and front wing vents and the iconic Flying B complete the car, which will be retained as the third and final Mulsanne in Bentley’s Heritage Collection.

It will join the second Mulsanne ever built, VIN 0002 from 2010, and a 2019 Mulsanne Speed that previously saw service on Bentley’s press fleet.

The three Mulsannes are part of an expanded 45-car Collection, 2.5 years into a three-year programme to completely rebuild a family of cars that together explain and describe Bentley’s 104-year history.

Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine, 2015, by Mulliner. Bentley Motors are offering a chance to buy one of five (or all five if you have deep pockets) specially built Mulsanne Limousines. The cars were built by hand by Mulliner in 2015 and shipped to their destination in the United Arab Emirates – but have never been used nor registered. Bentley Mulsanne - The End of an Era

After more than a decade in production, the final example of the Mulsanne has been completed, signifying the end of an illustrious and extraordinary lifespan. Over 7,300 examples - all handcrafted at Bentley’s home in Crewe, Cheshire - have embodied Bentley’s ability to produce the ultimate luxury sedan.  

With typical end-of-production celebrations curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bentley Colleagues gathered for socially-distanced photographs with the final cars, and marked the departure of Mulsanne by sharing their thoughts of the outgoing Bentley flagship on camera. Bentley is today releasing both this Colleague film and a suite of imagery of the penultimate customer car – a Mulsanne Speed ‘6.75 Edition by Mulliner’ finished in Rose Gold over Tungsten, heading to a lucky customer in the USA. One extremely special, final Mulsanne remains behind the penultimate car – however, its future home remains a closely guarded secret.

Mulsanne’s lineage can be traced back through Bentley’s history, from the original 8 liter of 1930 - the last car designed and developed by W.O. Bentley himself – as the most luxurious Bentley of its time.

In the last 11 years, over 700 people have invested nearly three million hours crafting Bentley’s ultra-luxury sedan. Producing the Mulsanne bodies required approximately 42 million spot welds, and creating the sumptuous leather interiors took more than a million hours alone. Nearly 90,000 hours have been spent polishing cars, before a total of over four million individual quality checkpoints. Mulsanne has been a labour of love.

A History of Mulsanne

Since the launch of the Mulsanne, the car has continued to evolve throughout its lifespan. Revealed to the world at Pebble Beach in 2009, the all-new Mulsanne, developed from the ground-up at Bentley’s home in Crewe, featured a unique exterior and interior design, chassis and new variant of the iconic twin-turbocharged 6.75-litre V8 engine

Mulsanne’s first upgrades in the form of the highly distinctive Mulliner Driving Specification were introduced in 2012. A range of striking new design features including unique 21-inch alloy wheels, Bentley Flying ‘B’ wing vents and a diamond-quilted leather trimmed cabin, matched with a large tilt-opening tinted glass sunroof and an exquisitely designed, electrically operated bottle cooler.

The second in a line of three Mulsanne derivatives – the Speed – was unveiled in 2015. Bringing the fastest ultra-luxury driving experience to life, the Mulsanne Speed housed an upgraded version of 6.75-liter V8 engine, delivering 537 PS (530 bhp / 395 kW) and 1,100 Nm (811 lb.ft), along with selectable driver-focused sports suspension and steering. New and contemporary styling features defined the Mulsanne Speed as a statement in quintessential British luxury.

A new Mulsanne family was debuted at Geneva in 2016, as the car received a plethora upgrades to further raise the standard of luxury offered in the world’s pinnacle luxury sedan. A suite of elegantly executed styling revisions marked the new Mulsanne out from its predecessor. The entire front-end style of the car (forward of the A pillar) was completely redesigned. The fenders, bonnet, radiator shell, grilles, lights – and bumpers fore and aft – were all updated, giving the car a more modern and integrated appearance.

On the inside, the new Mulsanne also boasted redesigned seats, new door trims and armrests, and unique glass switchgear. The new Mulsanne featured a completely new infotainment system, boasting class-leading navigation technology. It also featured a selection of on-board infotainment systems that raised the bar for audio and visual entertainment on the move.

In addition, the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase, the third Mulsanne variant, was developed with the rear-seat passenger in mind. The 250mm extension of the Mulsanne’s wheelbase (from 3,266 mm up to 3,516 mm) was entirely to the benefit of rear-seat passenger legroom. This significant increase in interior space made the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase the most generously proportioned pinnacle luxury limousine in the world, and by far the most comfortable way to travel on four wheels. Additions of a beautifully appointed console to separate the two rear seats, airline-style electronic leg rests, privacy curtains and ornate folding table complimented the unrivalled luxury environment.

Mulsanne 6.75 Edition by Mulliner

In 2020, the final series production cars form the unique ‘6.75 Edition by Mulliner’ signifying the end of Mulsanne’s reign. Taking its name from the legendary 6.75-liter engine, which this year also came to the end of production after more than 60 years, the ‘6.75 Edition’ is limited to only 30 examples.

Subtle tributes to the car’s engine are evident throughout the car. To name but some, the interior ‘organ stop’ ventilation controls are replaced by designs capped by miniature versions of the engine oil cap. The faces of the clock and minor gauges feature schematic cutaway drawings of the engine itself.

The exquisite Mulsanne 6.75 Edition by Mulliner will be restricted to just 30 unique examples, representing a fitting send-off for a masterpiece of British automotive engineering and craftsmanship. The car is inspired by – and takes its name from - the legendary 6¾-liter engine, which this year celebrates its 60th year in continuous production.

With the Mulsanne completing production once the thirty 6.75 Edition cars are built, the all-new Flying Spur will become Bentley’s flagship model, as the pinnacle of Bentley’s exquisite range of cars. 

The unique Mulsanne 6.75 Edition by Mulliner celebrates one of the most iconic cars in Bentley’s illustrious history, and will be based on the existing 530 bhp, 1100 Nm Mulsanne Speed – the most driver-focused ultra-luxury sedan ever created. Subtle references to the 6¾-liter V8 are evident across the car:

The Bentley Mulsanne is an iconic four-door saloon that set the benchmark in the luxury sector when it first appeared in 1980. Bentley EXP 100 GT Concept Previews Electric Future for the Brand

For its centennial, Bentley unveiled the EXP 100 GT concept, an all-electric grand tourer with butterfly doors that previews what a handcrafted ultra-luxury model with autonomous driving technology could look like. Underpinned by a new platform, the EXP 100 GT Concept is 94.4 inches wide and 228.3 inches long, which makes it longer than a standard-wheelbase Mulsanne. Some of the concept’s key exterior features include the round headlights that pay homage to historical vehicles, including the Blower built from 1929 to 1930. Its rear haunches, on the other hand, are reminiscent of the R-Type Continental produced from 1952 to 1955.

Sustainability was the key theme in creating the Bentley EXP 100 GT concept. The exterior color, for instance, uses synthetic pigments from rice husk ash. Inside the cabin, the copper-infused wood trim came from naturally fallen trees, and the seat upholstery came out of byproducts from winemaking. To fully maximize the luxury experience, Bentley worked with makers of luxury goods from the U.K. such as Bridge of Weir for the leather and Hand and Lock for the embroideries on the door panels.

With a full charge, the Bentley EXP 100 GT concept can travel up to 435 miles, and it can recharge its battery back up to 80 percent in 15 minutes. The four electric motors make 1,106 lb-ft of torque, which it puts down as efficiently as possible via a torque vectoring system. Bentley says the EXP 100 GT concept can hit 60 mph in 2.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 186 mph. It even has alloy wheels with active aerodynamics to maximize efficiency and tires featuring adaptive contact patches that adjust to the weather and the driver’s needs. Large front air intakes help cool the electric motor and improve aerodynamics.

The Bentley EXP 100 GT concept uses artificial intelligence to make the cabin as comfortable as possible. Combined with the Bentley Personal Assistant, which uses an illuminated, hand-cut crystal to let you know when it’s communicating with you, it can tailor the mood lighting and cabin ambiance. Thanks to biometric sensors, the car can detect your seating position and add extra back support when it senses that you need it. The sensors are scattered throughout the interior to track everything from eye movements to blood pressure so that the car can customize settings to keep you comfortable. OLED displays are used in the cabin for playing media when the vehicle is in autonomous mode. They can be turned off to fully disconnect the occupants from the rest of the world.

Bentley added cool themes to the change up the interior’s atmosphere. In addition to being able to change up the mood lighting, you can have the personal assistant toggle between five themes including a custom setting. Enhance, for example, mimics open-air driving by capturing light, sounds, scents, and the air quality from outside. Cocoon is the opposite, darkening the glass roof for added privacy and activating the air purification system located in the trunk. Capture records what’s going on inside and outside of the vehicle, and Re-Live replays everything you’ve chronicled during your trips. The Custom setting allows you to mix and match the four modes and can be selected by the driver or passenger.

The Bentley EXP 100 GT concept shows what we might expect from the British automaker in the future. In addition to adopting electric powertrains, future Bentleys will remain recognizable as Bentleys, all while giving a nod to past models. Expect more crazy over-the-top features to find their way into Bentley’s future vehicles.
