Persuasion - Charles Musgrove, guy who formerly courted Anne Elliot and asked her to marry him and got turned down - THIS GUY is so kind to Anne.
I mean, she's completely enamored of Wentworth, and seems to feel nothing for this guy, but like.
"Hey Anne that Bennick Bro? Bennick is totally into you. He should be calling at Kellynch soon. Just FYI he read the books you recc'd and everything. I dropped hints and gave him excuses so he could swing by with a pretense about seeing churches."
This is a man with two younger sisters, who has watched the two younger sisters flirt with Most Eligible Bachelor Captain Wentworth. So as an older brother he gets the whole "young lady should know when a young man is into her."
Also this guy could've been, at some point, wondering why Wentworth didn't flirt with Anne Elliot? But if he wondered he never said. It was good for him that Wentworth be more interested in the Musgrove ladies. He's got two sisters who need to be married off.
Also also this guy could've been like "I liked Anne I wish I'd married her instead of Mary dammit." And he could've discouraged other suitors out of some sense of jealousy or something, but he doesn't. He's not passive aggressive about it at all. He just openly is like "and why shouldn't Anne be happy too?"
And it's in such stark contrast to Anne's own immediate family, who do not give a damn about her. Like, yes Anne you were right to turn this guy down but you could've been somewhat happy with him. Happier than you are now. More valued than you are now.
Honestly Anne you just need every excuse to get out of Sir Walter's house.

The former DV8 venue in Seattle, reported to have been torn down in 2012 for a 10-story mixed-use building. Pictures courtesy of Vanishing Seattle Facebook Community, “Documenting displaced and disappearing institutions, small businesses, homes, communities & cultures of Seattle. Also celebrating local history & cool shit.”
Fugazi, DV8, Seattle, Washington USA 2/28/1999 (FLS #0900)
This date marks the last time Fugazi played the city of Seattle in the state of Washington, following another gig at the Capitol Theater in Olympia on the previous night and completing a 7 night stretch with partners in crime The Ex, an iconic punk band from the Netherlands which has been in existence for decades and performs to this very day.
The venue is the DV8 (now defunct) and packs some 1500 attendees for the occasion. As it turns out, Fugazi played Seattle 6 times over the years, with only Olympia topping this in Washington state, chalking up a total of 7 Fugazi shows.
The recording starts off with Greg Bennick (vocalist in Seattle-based political straight edge hardcore band Trial, activist, public speaker, movie-maker, and philanthropist, to name a couple of things) delivering a lengthy, yet eloquent and passionate plea addressing and opposing the Teen Dance Ordinance, at that time a controversial Seattle law which severely curtailed the ability of concert and club promoters to hold events for underaged patrons.
Considering Fugazi strongly advocated an all ages policy since its inception, things pretty much add up on this particular night in time.
Something else I particularly admire about Fugazi is that the band never used fixed set lists, but preferred to take its cues from situations or events as and when they occurred.
Of course this means taking risks, since it significantly increases the element of surprise and the chance of possible mishaps, and it definitely demands the band members to stay alert, taking subtle leads and cues from each other, and being able to go into any of the songs that make up the repertoire. On some nights this kind of interaction falls short, yet on other nights everything is magic.
That said, this recording right here definitely falls in the latter category since it documents an evening in time where the pieces of the puzzle come together and the result transcends. The band is on fire, and the performances and interplay are great, which results in several little improvs or song variations.
In this regard, note a little bit of additional foreplay leading the listener into Recap Modotti, as well as the deliciously grinding guitar play lighting up Waiting Room, the alternate guitar arrangements during Turnover, the restrained percussion and deliberate vocal finesse on Long Division, the drawn out bridge during Song #1, or Joe’s unusual and different approach towards the end of Glueman.
Also, note that the set opens with the Number 5 instrumental with Jerry Busher on additional percussion. The song would not see its official release until October 2001, as part of the Furniture EP.
On top of this, the sound quality is truly excellent and beautifully captures the intricate patterns and layered subtleties which these songs contain. The only minor reserve here is that the 1500 people attending the gig are not all that audible in the mix.
To conclude, it can be noted that one song is not mentioned in the set list yet gets pulled out of the hat right after Long Distance Runner. I will not give away the song title here, but I’m sure a lot of listeners will welcome this tune.
Counting the surprise track brings the total number of songs played up to 29. Most of these are taken from the End Hits and Red Medicine albums (7 versus 8 songs respectively), followed by 3 songs each from the Repeater and Steady Diet of Nothing albums, 2 songs each from In on the Kill Taker, the 7 Songs EP and Margin Walker EP, and 1 song each from the Furniture EP and 3 Songs 7 inch.
The set list:
1. Opening Remarks 2. Number 5 3. Exit Only 4. Merchandise 5. Place Position 6. Interlude 1 7. Birthday Pony 8. Latin Roots 9. Break 10. Recap Modotti 11. FD 12. Waiting Room 13. Lockdown 14. Closed Captioned 15. Turnover 16. Interlude 2 17. Great Cop 18. Do You Like Me 19. Long Division 20. Target 21. Instrument 22. Encore 1 23. Forensic Scene 24. Back to Base 25. Floating Boy 26. Long Distance Runner 27. Encore 2 28. Arpeggiator 29. Encore 3 30. Bed For The Scraping 31. Margin Walker 32. Song #1 33. Encore 4 34. Version 35. Glueman

this is when you decide
A story for Xichen and a-Yao For when love and hurt both linger. And there’s nothing you can do about it in the end.

In the end, you push him away with every bit of power that still lingers in your body. You know it’s a bruise that will never fade.
You make him live with your selflessness. You know it will be worse than dying.
When did you decide to make him suffer?
Was it when the circle of jade stopped glowing with the light of his favor?
All these years, you thought one thing was constant, that he would always call you his friend, that you would always have access to this place that held his true heart. After all, he was the one to hand you the token in thanks, he said, for all you’d done to protect him. A token, he said, that would open the gates at any time. He touched your hand, so long ago, a brush as light as silk, but the flush on his neck told you he intended the words as you hoped he did.
And when the light faded, you didn’t at first know what it meant. Until you did, and then you had to hide it in your pocket so no one else would see that you were no longer beloved.
But that wasn’t when you decided.
It might have been the first time his smile didn’t reach his eyes and you realized his trust was shaken by the poisonous words those bastards had said. Of course, you couldn’t call them bastards, not his brother and not the man wearing your brother’s face. You could only insinuate and imply, and you knew he wasn’t entirely convinced.
Even before that, though, you hated the shattered look on his face the day you told him your son was dead. How could his grief for your son be so great, the son you always knew you had to sacrifice, a victim before he’d even drawn his first breath? You should never have let him know the boy, but he was there when the child was born, and you couldn’t resist the light in his eyes.
He clung to you with tears, so you soothed him, comforted him, pretended you had no idea what happened, and in a way, it brought you closer together, because he didn’t bat an eye when you slaughtered your son’s killers. You thought maybe, maybe he could forgive you anything.
But then he told you no for the first time, turning away your love, holding on to grief instead of letting it fuel him. He said he feared you’d held back from more children because of him, and he could no longer bear to be an impediment to your legacy. And how could you argue with that? That first no made the next no easier until you could no longer even ask the question and had to be satisfied with his hand on yours, the gentle press of lips on your forehead, and eventually, nothing at all.
No, it wasn’t even that he chose to care for his brother’s injuries, though you wanted him to watch you ascend every step and take the position you’d worked so hard to achieve. True, he came to the ceremony and told you he was proud, so proud, but it wasn’t quite enough, because you knew from his distracted smiles that he’d rather be home, holding his brother’s hand instead of yours.
Be honest. You know when it was.
It was the day Mingjue died.
Don’t you remember?
You’d planned for this moment because he’d hurt you again and again with his suspicious eyes, with his arrogant righteousness, with his words, with his boot. But you won, didn’t you, and it felt exactly as you expected.
Powerful (not weak).
Satisfied (not hollow).
Victorious (not remorseful).
You stared at Mingjue’s body, watching his brother weep. You never told him, of course, but you did this for Huaisang too, to give him peace and freedom. The halls of Bujing Shi were always full of their anger at each other, and now, they would be quiet. Huaisang could have everything he wanted: art, music, beauty. He was a practical boy. In time, you knew he’d forget.
It was the moment you heard Xichen scream.
Did you know he could sound like that?
When he came outside and saw Mingjue laying in a pool of blood, you watched his face change, drained of life as completely as Mingjue’s, and you reminded your own face to be heartbroken in case he saw some of the triumph you felt.
He never even looked at you, never even saw you. He dropped your lists, your important papers, and collapsed, falling down next to Huaisang. His hands trembled on Mingjue’s face, dipping his beautiful fingers in the bloody trails as though he could not believe what he was seeing and then fiercely swiping at them as though the inevitable could be stopped.
His voice was a howl of agony, and you knew you had made a mistake. He could love you forever, but he could never love you first. He could love you forever, but he would always remember this loss as too young, too tragic, too soon. He could love you forever, but it would turn common over time, and Mingjue would always be a knife in his heart.
But even that you could have forgiven. It was understandable.
Was there a flutter of breath? You’ll never be sure, but you ran to his side to grasp da-ge’s wrist, checking to make sure your work was done. And Xichen pushed you, fury and panic in his touch.
He pushed you and screamed.
Don’t TOUCH him!
He pushed you away, his hand to your chest, filled with the light of his power. It left a bruise that has never faded in your mind.
So you make him live with your selflessness. You hope it will be worse than dying.

Some of my boards for Gabriele Pennacchioli's Shapeshifters episode of Love, Death & Robots. Gabriele wanted this to be one continuous shot, so after my rough thumbnail pass, he and his artists at Blur provided the CG layout for me to tie down the characters over.
It's pretty gruesome in places.
