Getting to Know You
Getting to Know All About You.
Another tag game, yo! Tag 8 People You’d Like to Get to Know Better! I was tagged by the most incredible @movrings! You’re the only one who tags me in things! Thank you, Love! <3
1. Favorite Colors:
Pale lavender, mint or sea foam green, light pink, and peach, Tiffany Blue
2. Last Song I Listened To:
Ultraviolet by Freya Ridings. It just feels so ethereal with a solid slow beat. Relaxing. Her voice is just so wonderful to listen to when you unwind. She can sound kind of other worldly. To me, it’s reminiscent of both flying or feeling the sensation of a soft waterfall beating down on you.
3. Favorite Musicians:
Florence + The Machine, Kate Bush, Queen, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, The Judds, Duran Duran, Edith Piaf, Jessie J, Anna Natrebko. And many mooooooore!
4. Last Movie I Watched:
Bringing Up Baby
Oh. My. God. This movie! First of all, I am biased. My mother named me after Katherine Hepburn. But! I feel like it’s a prime part of cinematic history. It’s been a favorite of mine since I was little. This is an old fashioned farce, with two amazing comedic actors, a leopard, and a dog. The chemistry between Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn is mind-blowing. And their comic timing together, it’s just legendary. Two thumbs up.
5. Favorite Character
So many good ones! I mean, Jaskier from The Witcher, Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice, Agent Peggy Carter (Marvel), The Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher, Tannis from Letterkenny, Mercy Thompson from the series by Patricia Briggs, Buffy (all the different incarnations, Kristy Swanson included). But my favorite, for years now, has been one half of my OTP.
Stiles Stillinski (Teen Wolf)
Best character on the show. By far. And best acted too. Teen Wolf didn’t deserve Dylan O’Brien and the terrible story line certainly didn’t deserve Stiles. That’s why I’m so thankful:
(Meme source: @writing-and-nutmeg )
6. Last TV Show:
Two of them! I keep switching back and forth. The first I watch when I feel the need for a bit of levity, and the second, when I’m in a more serious mood:
a. Letterkenny
This one took me completely by delighted surprise. I really do recommend. The characters really make an impression. But each of them. They just get under your skin, but in a good way. This is a seriously talented ensemble cast, really well written and the quips are whip-smart and take you by surprise. Fair warning, this makes the show incredibly quotable and days later you will still be muttering things like, “pitter patter,” “You wanna come to a super soft birthday party?,” “hard no,” and “Figure it out!”
b. Elementary
So, I love mysteries. And since I was wee, I’ve been a fan of Sherlock Holmes. I really like this iteration. The fact that Watson is a Joan and not a John is interesting as is the premise that she begins as Sherlock’s sober companion. And I love that they don’t creep into the area of romance between the two of them, they’re just bros for life. That dynamic as well as the mysteries and solves, no matter how rediculous or unrealistic certain events happen to be, just makes it so enjoyable for me.
7. Sweet, Spicy, or Savory: Sweet & Savory together. Never Spicy.
8. Sparkling Water, Tea, or Coffee:
NEVER sparkling water. Flat for me! Preferably Tea, got addicted during Study Abroad. Blame the Brits. Coffee for a treat. But like, super sweet coffee.
9. Pets:
Cap’n Jack (the surly Bichon) and Baby James (the recently domesticated street dog)
Cap’n Jack, a.k.a. Jacker Snacker, a.k.a. Snacky, a.k.a. Snackus Aurelius. He is a grumpy old man who likes to dance/trot towards you as he tosses his head in an unparalleled display of adorableness. Baby James is a giant dork with an under bite, a crooked bottom canine, and a mohawk growing up the bridge of his nose to his forehead. Couple this appearance with the way he cocks his head to listen, and he resembles a velociraptor crossed with an orc. But in a way that makes you want to coo at him and give him kisses. These noodles. They drive me bananas.
Well, that was fun! Hope you enjoyed! I’m tagging @theannettles, @jim-im-a-doctor-not-a-physicist, @dontstepinmypuddle, @swingsetindecember, @pantstomatch, and anyone else who feels the need!

Finally! It's a shame to see Wildstar go, but on the other hand it is amazing to see how the community sticks together. We had hopes till the end, and it's so nice to see that we still have, now with the news about the museum preserving abandoned games. Who would have expected that so many people would gather and put so much effort into this farewell collaboration for this awesome game. I can't describe how overwhelmed I am about all the amazing art of you guys. :D BTW feel free to upload your artwork now, if you haven't already. ;-D
In case I didn't place your character near someone else, I'm deeply sorry. In the end, time pressure was real and I probably forgot one or two requested placements. It were just too many entries and I don't want to start about the technical difficulties on this. ^^; Using brushes was impossible, which is my excuse for these weird shadows. XD
This is only a very small JPG in bad quality, since the original one is way too big to upload. You can get the original sized one here:

18-21, 35, 36, 39, 40, 42, 44, 47
18: Which character from a book is the most like you?
I feel like a combination of Fanny Price from Mansfield Park and Laura Ingalls as portrayed in the Little House on the Prairie books. I’m shy, self-doubting, and struggled with issues of morality, I’m a dreamer with a practical outlook and a bit of a temper, and I like academics, writing, and the outdoors. And though I am very much not like Harriet Vane in many ways, I find myself identifying heavily with her (and Sayers) lately in my snarkier moods.
19: Which character from a book is the least like you?
As silly as I can sometimes be, I never have and never will act as as silly or boy-crazy as Lydia Bennet does in Pride and Prejudice.
20: Best summer read?
Woodwalker by Emily B. Martin takes place in spring, but the atmosphere reminds me heavily of summer vacations to the forest, and I have a feeling I’ll want to reread it during future summers.
21: Best winter read?
The Nine Tailors, especially the first and last few chapters, should be read after dark in December/January. The atmosphere melds with the book to create a transcendental experience.
35: Name a book you consider to be terribly underrated
Roverandom by J.R.R. Tolkien isn’t a mindblowing work of genius, but it’s an adorable, imaginative children’s fantasy that kind of makes me regret that the world got Epic Fantasy Master Tolkien instead of Whimsical Children’s Author Tolkien.
36: Name a book you consider to be terribly overrated
In sixth grade, my teacher assigned me Watership Down. I hated reading a 500-page book about stupid rabbits. I was horrified to learn it’s considered a classic (though I’m tempted to read it as an adult and see if my opinion changes).
39: Name one of your favorite childhood books.
This is where I admit I was a Babysitter’s Club fan as a child. My absolute favorite was probably the one where Kristy’s mother got married, Kristy’s Big Day, but I also really liked the Super Specials, especially …Starring, The Babysitter’s Club and The Baby-sitters Remember. (Though I did have to check Wikipedia for the titles.)
40: Name one of your favorite books from your teenage years
The Kid Comes Back by John R. Tunis. I’m not one for sports books, but I loved this series for the historical content, the great characters, and the well-described action. This book was my favorite in the series because it’s also a war book–the book starts with several chapters of Roy trapped behind enemy lines in WWII, and then he returns to baseball and has to deal with war injuries.
42: Which was the best book you had to read in school?
Shoofly Pie by Tim Downs, a murder mystery with the world’s snarkiest detective. Everyone in class loved this book, but I loved it more than most. By the time the rest of the class finished the book, I’d read it twice and read the sequel. I’ve since read the entire series and own an autographed bind-up of the first two books.
44: Do you like to listen to music when you read?
No, it’s way too distracting.
47: What do you do to get out of a reading slump?
I read Kindle books on my phone. I can read them anywhere I have a few spare minutes, and since I flip pages often, I feel like I’m making faster progress.

Hundreds of Groups Support the American Prairies Conservation Act
Earlier this month, roughly 200 conservation, agriculture, wildlife, taxpayer and sportsmen organizations signed on to a letter of support for the American Prairies Conservation Act (S. 1913, H.R. 3939), introduced by Senators John Thune (R-SD), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Mike Rounds (R-SD), and Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Representatives Kristi Noem (R-SD) and Tim Walz (D-MN). This critical piece of legislation expands and improves a grassland conservation provision known as “Sodsaver,” which was first included in the 2008 Farm Bill and was strengthened in the 2014 Farm Bill.
Sodsaver limits the loss of native grasslands by reducing federal subsidies for crop insurance premiums on acres that are converted from prairie to cropland. By reducing the federal premium subsidy, Sodsaver puts the risk of producing crops on converted prairie back in the hands of the farmers doing the conversion.
The current version of Sodsaver applies to six states – Nebraska, Iowa, Montana, Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota. The American Prairies Conservation Act would extend the provision to the entire country, including areas in Texas, Kansas, and other states that are experiencing some of the highest grassland loss rates.
The letter, addressed to House and Senate Agriculture Committee leadership, states:
The 2014 Farm Bill included a Sodsaver provision that reduces crop insurance premium subsidies on newly broken native sod, ensuring that taxpayer dollars do not create incentives for more native prairie land to be plowed under. Most of the land that is currently being converted from native ecosystems to cropland is marginal, highly erodible, or prone to flooding. These environmentally sensitive lands provide critical ecological services, including habitat for grassland-dependent wildlife species, flood mitigation, erosion control, water filtration, and other ecological benefits. In addition to providing ecosystem services, native grasslands are a critical resource for American ranchers[…]
The undersigned organizations applaud Senators Thune, Klobuchar, Rounds, and Bennet and Representatives Noem and Walz for their leadership in preserving grazing land, ranching opportunities, and critical wildlife habitat and other natural resources through the American Prairies Conservation Act. We strongly urge you to include this provision in the 2018 Farm Bill.
The destruction of native prairies for crop production results in fewer ranching and hunting opportunities, weaker ecosystems, increased soil erosion, and decreased revenue for rural communities. In addition to extending Sodsaver protections to the entire country, the American Prairies Conservation Act stems grassland loss by:
Closing a loophole that allows producers to skirt Sodsaver disincentives by converting prairie to a non-insured, non-annual crop (e.g. alfalfa) before planting to an insured, annual crop (e.g. corn).
Requiring USDA to track and report on grassland loss by county.
We hope that a national Sodsaver provision will be included in the 2018 Farm Bill and look forward to working on this issue with members of Congress and with the hundreds of organizations that have joined in support of the American Prairies Conservation Act.
For more information on the American Prairies Conservation Act, visit NSAC’s Farm Bill Campaign page. While the sign-on letter has already been delivered, organizations that wish to show their support may still sign on here.

Death by Taxes?
This dream was pretty fucking cool HAHAHA.
It took place in my house kitchen room. I had some tax form return like task I had to do for myself, said to be the most “difficult task in the world.”
But here’s the twist: Kristie Bennet is helping me with this task! My brother comes by and makes some annoying comments. Then when he’s gone, Kristie tells me he finds him annoying and rude lol.
Some time later, while I’m still doing the task, she ends up hugging me at random times and also kissing my cheek lol. Then after some while, we end up making out lol. And that’s where the dream ends.

Chilkoot Day 4: Lindeman Lake to Bennet Lake
1`It was here: the final day of our hike. It had been quite the trip so far and one I’ll never forget. The morning of the fourth day was exactly like the 3 mornings before it: we woke up, ate some breakfast, and packed up our tents. We didn’t have too far to go this day, just 11 km, so our morning was a little slower than usual but once we set out we continued onwards at our regular steady pace. As it was exciting as it was to be so close to the finish line after roughing it for days, it was also a bit bittersweet. I could keep stay out here in nature forever.
The trail immediately took us onto a ridge above Lindeman Lake, crossing over the river that feeds it from Deep Lake, and along a forested ridgeway. Before long we made it to Bare Loon Lake, the site where most of the other hikers on the trail had set up the night before, and gazed out over the lake in the morning light. From there, the hike was frankly rather easy. It look us through wooded trails and up a few rocky ledges, but by day 4 this was second nature. Eventually we came upon an old trapper’s cabin, with a note on the front door saying we were welcome to come in to look around but to make sure we closed the door on the way out so animals didn’t get in. The cabin was small and dark and gave us a glimpse of how people used to live (and apparently how some still do).
After the trapper’s cabin there was a long stretch of sandy terrain, which made walking as difficult as in snow and gave us a bit of a workout for the final stretch. Eventually we saw Bennett Lake and its old 117 year-old timber church on the horizon. After a quick descent we had done it: we had reached the shores of Bennett Lake and had completed the Chilkoot Trail. Needless to stay we were all ecstatic.
In our state of elation we wandered around Bennett Lake, the site of an enormous old makeshift city where klondikers set up camp and built boats to complete the trip to Dawson City. All around the lake shore was evidence of this old city, with rusty old nails everywhere you looked, an extraordinary amount of glass from old bottles, and even old food tins. It was quite the sight. We sat by the lake for a while, waiting for the our train to arrive to take us back to Skagway and while waiting we made some lunch.
Eventually the time came to catch the train and we said goodbye to Bennett. Despite having to leave the splendour of back-country nature, I was pretty excited to board the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway. Who would have imagined I could combine two interests into one amazing trip?: hiking and heritage railways. Though the original White Pass & Yukon Route would have been steam powered, we were pulled along by a 60’s diesel locomotive. What a treat steam would have been, but we can’t win them all.
The train ride was absolutely phenomenal. Kristi and I situated ourselves outside at the back of one of the carriages to watch the beautiful views pass by and gawk at the huge canyons we passed over. Dad and Mike chose the comfort of the cab interior, and occasionally joined us outside for the view. The train followed the tracks backward through the terrain we had tackled over the past few days, starting in boreal forest, moving to desolate alpine, and then to coastal forest. We passed by (and through, and above) mountains, huge lakes, snaking rivers, vast rocky deserts, massive canyons, and even the Canada-US border.
Eventually we reached an absolutely stunning sight: a massive cantilever and trestle bridge spanning Dead Horse Gulch (named literally for all the horses that died there during the gold rush). The bridge was shrouded in mist, and as our train chugged toward it around the gulch I was flabbergasted. It was built in 1899, was last used in the 1960s, and now it stood abandoned over the gulch.
The bridge was definitely the highlight of the trip back and afterwards the route wasn’t as exciting. At one point we had to stop to let a train travelling the opposite way pass on the tracks, but before long we were back in Skagway and in desperate need for a beer and a burger. We hunted down the Skagway Brewing Co. and found our fix. Once we’d quaffed and gorged to our satisfaction we visited the Gold Rush Cemetery to visit the graves of Soapy Smith (the notorious gangster) and Frank Reid (the ballsy engineer who killed him). After we hopped back in the car and made the quiet and sleepy (well for everyone except for Mike who was driving) trip back to Whitehorse. We arrived and immediately hit the sack, exhausted from our adventure.
And that was that: our Chilkoot Trail adventure finally complete. And what an adventure it was. I had some amazing bonding time with my Dad, something I get far too little of these days living away from home. And Kristi and Mike of course are great friends and I will always cherish this time we get to spend together. Despite the difficult ascents, some terrible weather on the second day, and some sore muscles I think I can safely say we all truly enjoyed the trip and really bonded over the course of three days. Dad was able to beat all us “kids” to the summit, Kristi was able to recover her stolen jacket from the dumb guy, and Mike was able to recreate some historic photos. I’d call it a resounding success (and honestly I’d do it again in a heartbeat).
The next morning my Dad and I flew back to Edmonton, happy that we had successfully hiked the historic Chilkoot Trail. Plus the deal was sweetened with Air North’s free cookies…
