Sandip Ghosh appointed principal of NMCH hours after resigning from RG Kar Medical College

Hours after resigning as the principal of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata on Monday, Sandip Ghosh was appointed as the principal of the National Medical College & Hospital (NMCH) through a notification issued by the West Bengal Health Department.

On Monday morning, Ghosh submitted his resignation citing “moral responsibility”, three days after the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, triggering widespread protests across the state.

What is the process of counselling for the NEET PG?

The NEET PG is a common entrance exam for medical post-graduation admission in India. The admission counselling is conducted for MD/ MS/ DNB courses for around 65,000 seats in different clinical, para-clinical and non-clinical seats after MBBS. Every year around 1.6 - 1.7 lakh (160k - 170k) MBBS graduates appear for the NEET PG examination. The exam is soon going to be replaced with the NExT examination from 2024 onwards (as per the recent announcement by the National Medical Commission).

The NEET PG admission counselling is conducted by two types of government agencies: Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and State Medical Counselling Authority (as defined by the respected state government).

West Bengal Health Scheme: A Magic Wand for State Employees & Pensioners

The government of West Bengal has taken an initiative for the state’s employees and their families to provide a protective shield guarding their health by providing them with a health insurance scheme so that they can lead a peaceful and secure life without worrying about the constant change and unsure nature of the future.

To ensure the same, the government of West Bengal launched the West Bengal Health Scheme (WBHS) under the Finance Department of West Bengal which ensures a medical shield for government employees, pensioners, and beneficiaries of Grant-in-Aid (GIA) colleges and universities of West Bengal. It was launched in 2008 and has been serving the people of West Bengal with protection ever since.

Authorities in India are evacuating nearly 1.5 million people from the path of an approaching cyclone in the eastern states of Odisha (formerly Orissa) and West Bengal.

Thousands of relief workers have been deployed to minimise damage from Cyclone Dana, which is expected to make landfall in the next 24 hours.

Transportation services have already been affected, with scores of trains and flights cancelled.

India's weather department has said a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to turn into a severe cyclonic storm by Thursday evening.

The storm is expected to hit the coastal areas with wind speeds of 100-120 km/h (62-74 mph).

On Wednesday, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said arrangements were in place to ensure the safety of residents in districts along the cyclone’s path.

State officials said they had prepared temporary relief camps with food, water and health facilities.

"We are fully prepared to deal with the storm. Don't panic, be safe and be careful," Majhi told the media.

Odisha is evacuating more than a million people from 14 districts, while West Bengal is evacuating over 300,000 people from coastal areas.

Officials from the two states and rescue teams are on alert. Schools in the coastal regions have been shut.

Flight operations from Bhubaneswar and Kolkata city airports have been suspended from Thursday evening to Friday morning and more than 200 trains have been cancelled as authorities brace for the storm.

Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea and contingency plans have been made for Paradip port in Odisha to ensure safety of the staff and people living nearby.

The weather department has said “heavy to very heavy” rainfall is expected along the coast for the next 24 hours.

Odisha and West Bengal experience severe storms and cyclones every year.

In 1999, more than 10,000 people were killed in a cyclone in Odisha.

Last year, at least 16 people lost their lives when a cyclone lashed India and Bangladesh.

Hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged junior doctors protesting the rape and murder of their colleague at RG Kar Hospital to end their fast-unto-death, the state government extended a call for talks on Monday, contingent upon the withdrawal of their hunger strike. Earlier in the day, the agitating doctors remained steadfast in their refusal to end their fast until all their demands were met. In a letter addressed to the junior doctors on Saturday evening, West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant proposed a meeting on October 21 at 5 PM, asserting that most of the doctors’ demands had already been addressed. “The Hon’ble Chief Minister hopes that this message will be received with the understanding that the junior doctors will immediately end the hunger strike in the interest of public health and well-being,” Pant stated in the letter. He added, “However, as per your request, if you wish to further discuss these points, you are called for a meeting with the Chief Minister on October 21, Monday, at 5 PM in Nabanna Sabhaghar, with 10 of your colleagues, after the withdrawal of the hunger strike.” The meeting is scheduled to last for only 45 minutes. During a phone call with the doctors while Chief Secretary Pant and Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty visited the protest site in Esplanade, Banerjee urged the junior doctors to end their fast-unto-death. “Everybody has the right to protest, but it shouldn’t affect healthcare services. I would request you all to withdraw your fast,” she said. The junior doctors are demanding the removal of State Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam, alongside other reforms. Banerjee acknowledged their frustrations but emphasized the impracticality of removing multiple officials within a department simultaneously. “How can you decide which officer will be removed or not? Is this logical?” she questioned. Having entered the fifteenth day of their hunger strike, the junior doctors are advocating for justice for their deceased colleague and calling for systemic changes within the state’s healthcare infrastructure. Six doctors have already been hospitalized due to deteriorating health, while eight others continue their indefinite fast, insisting on concrete action from the state government by October 21 to resolve the ongoing deadlock.
