Kolkata Rape: Will the protest end today? Mamata government called the doctors again, email surfaced
Row On Kolkata Rape: The Mamata government has once again called the doctors, who are protesting for justice and other demands in the Kolkata rape murder case, for talks.
Tumblr media
Kolkata Rape Murder Case: The West Bengal government has invited doctors protesting against the rape and murder of a female doctor at the government RG Kar Hospital for another round of talks on Wednesday (September 18) at 6.30 pm. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant reiterated that the government reiterates its appeal to the protesting doctors to return to work in view of the flood-like situation in some parts of the state. He said, 'You know that there is a flood-like situation in many districts of South Bengal and a large area has been submerged.'
This will be the second round of talks between the protesting doctors and the state government within 48 hours. The first round of talks was held on Monday in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Pant said in an e-mail, 'You know that there is a flood-like situation in many districts of South Bengal and a large area has been submerged. In view of the situation, we again appeal to you to return to your work in the larger public interest and serve the common people. I, along with other members of the task force, will meet your 30-member delegation at the auditorium in Nabanna at 6.30 pm today.'
Doctors had made this demand
Earlier, the protesting doctors sitting on a dharna outside the headquarters of the West Bengal Health Department sent an email to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant demanding a discussion to resolve some important "unresolved issues" such as security in hospitals. These issues are included as their pre-condition for ending the dharna. The doctors had sent the email in reference to the meeting of their governing body which ended on Wednesday morning. The doctors raised the issue of safety and security inside government hospital premises and mentioned the promise of formation of a special task force headed by the Chief Secretary and inclusion of its details in the agenda of the proposed meeting.
What did the doctors write in the email?
In their email, the doctors wrote, 'In the context of our last meeting with the Chief Minister, we would like to reiterate that there were some major points regarding our five-point demands that could not be resolved. In particular, our fourth and fifth issues related to the development of the healthcare system, security, defense and the culture of the current threatening environment have not been resolved.' Let us tell you that in the details of the meeting held between the doctors and the government at her Kalighat residence in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (September 16) night, a mutual agreement to form a task force was confirmed as a step taken to address the security concerns of doctors.

Today, I'm going to be talking about the infamous case of the RG Kar case.
On the 9th of August, the semi-naked, battered, and bruised body of an on-duty post-graduate trainee was found in the seminar hall of a government-run hospital of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital The victim was found by her father after she didn't come home.
One person was arrested, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who was an outsider with free access to the different departments of the hospital. They found a torn piece of a Bluetooth earphone, along with CCTV footage grabbed from other parts of the hospital premises.
It was not a suicide. There was bleeding from the woman's private parts as well as injury from other parts of the body, such as the mouth, belly, left leg, ring finger, and lips. Her neck bone also seemed to be broken, showing signs of strangulation and then smothering which most likely caused the patient to die. Her case was mostly showing that it had been a gang rape, as well. What did the perpetrator do in the case? As soon as he committed the crime, he went home and washed his clothes. Her body wouldn't have been found till her father went looking for her. The case, after being reported sparked a wildfire in the people, causing protests outside the college around the city, and even outside cities. However, on the 14th of August, during a 'Reclaim the Night' protest outside the college, protestors were faced by mobsters, who forced themselves into the hospital and damaged the crime scene. The police, who were present were also hurt since they hadn't prepared themselves for a possible riot. There have been reports of 'constructions' done around the room where the incident took place even when the investigation is still ongoing. Since then: >The director of the college has since resigned >The CM of the state joined the protest march, for more proper investigation to be done when she herself is the Health Minister and the Home minister as well >The Police are insisting that this is a 'malicious media case' >The entire nation is aflame with this case, with women on the streets protesting for justice.

Kolkata doctor rape-murder: Principal resigns, protests continue for 4th day
Faced with the backlash over the rape and murder of a doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, director Sandip Ghosh resigned from his post and from government service on Monday morning, days after junior doctors demanded his resignation for failing to ensure staff safety, Indian media reported.
Hospital operations were disrupted across the state as junior doctors, interns and postgraduates continued their shutdown for the fourth consecutive day, demanding a judicial enquiry into the doctor’s death.
Ghosh’s decision came a day after the West Bengal government removed medical superintendent – deputy principal Sanjay Vashisth, who was replaced by Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, dean of student affairs, with additional responsibilities of superintendent.
For the past three days, the junior doctors had been performing emergency duties, but as of Monday morning, they ceased all their duties. A protesting junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the incident took place, said:
“We want an impartial investigation into the murder of our colleague, either by the CBI or a sitting magistrate. We are dissatisfied with the current police investigation and will continue our protest till justice is served and the state ensures foolproof security for all doctors and healthcare workers.”
The body of a woman aspirant was found in the seminar hall of the hospital on Friday morning and a civilian volunteer was arrested in connection with the crime on Saturday.
The junior doctors have asked the state government to expedite the prosecution of the culprits and suspend Ghosh and Vashisth.
Ghosh, who assumed office in mid-2021, has denied the allegations, saying he could not tolerate false accusations and was already co-operating with the police, including handing over CCTV footage. He said:
“I cannot take this insult anymore. All the allegations raised against me are false and fabricated. A student movement has been incited to remove me. There is a political mind behind this. I had informed police within an hour of the incident. CCTV footage has been handed over to police. I want the agitating students to rejoin duty soon.”
Ghosh personally visited Swasthya Bhavan to hand over his resignation letter.
The students also demanded that the post-mortem report of the victim and CCTV footage of the CCTV cameras installed near the seminar hall where the body was found be made public.
The state government has cancelled the leave of all senior doctors to cope with the influx of patients as Mondays usually see a large number of patients in outpatient departments.
Support for the striking doctors has come from across the country.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Associations of India (FORDA) has backed the strike and called for an end to fee-based services across the country, while the West Bengal Doctors Forum has asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to conduct an impartial enquiry and strengthen the security of health workers.

From food to fans good Samaritans take care of protesting doctors in Kolkata
Water bottles given by benefactors for protesting doctors. | Photo Credit: Bishwanath Ghosh A pile of water bottle packs, growing taller by the hour, serves as the unofficial boundary where the protesters’ territory begins. Young medical students are staging a sit-in on a section of the service road outside West Bengal’s health department in Salt Lake City, demanding justice in the rape-murder of a doctor on duty at the R.G. Kar Hospital and defying a Supreme Court directive to get back to work. Each time someone picks up a pack to distribute the bottles among those shouting slogans, another pack materialises as if by magic, brought by common people walking in to lend support. It’s not just water they bring; many are coming with food (one man has brought home-cooked meals for 200 people), while Techno India, which has its campus right across the road, is allowing the protesters, stationed in Salt Lake City since Tuesday (September 10, 2024), to use its washrooms. What it means that everything that the young doctors need to stay put at the venue is being provided by people who are complete strangers to them — the common citizens of Kolkata. The only thing that connects the two is the demand for justice in the R.G. Kar Hospital case. “The young doctor who died was like my daughter. These young people who are protesting here are like my children. How can I not come here? I am a housewife, I do not belong to any political party, I only want justice,” Soma Paul, a resident of Salt Lake City, who came with two of her friends, Debika Chakraborty and Ritu Ghosh, said. The three came with water bottles, hand sanitiser, and garbage bags. Joy Ghosh, a medical representative, came carrying dozens of ORS tetra packs in his arms, clarifying quickly when asked about his profession, “These are not sample pieces, I bought these with my money. This is my way of supporting them.” Even while he was wondering where to place the tetra packs, another good Samaritan, Nivedita Chakraborty, an IT professional, went about distributing chips and soft drinks and bananas. By lunchtime, there was so much food that the slogan-shouting had to be paused periodically for announcements to be made that everybody should eat without much delay because a lot of the food was perishable. Many of the protesters ate, and suddenly hand wipes materialised. And just as the afternoon got hotter, yet another good Samaritan walked in with dozens of hand fans.
