Scientists have developed a new solar-powered system to convert saltwater into fresh drinking water which they say could help reduce dangerous the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera.
Via tests in rural communities, they showed that the process is more than 20% cheaper than traditional methods and can be deployed in rural locations around the globe.
Building on existing processes that convert saline groundwater to freshwater, the researchers from King’s College London, in collaboration with MIT and the Helmholtz Institute for Renewable Energy Systems, created a new system that produced consistent levels of water using solar power, and reported it in a paper published recently in Nature Water.
It works through a process called electrodialysis which separates the salt using a set of specialized membranes that channel salt ions into a stream of brine, leaving the water fresh and drinkable. By flexibly adjusting the voltage and the rate at which salt water flowed through the system, the researchers developed a system that adjusts to variable sunshine while not compromising on the amount of fresh drinking water produced.
Using data first gathered in the village of Chelleru near Hyderabad in India, and then recreating these conditions of the village in New Mexico, the team successfully converted up to 10 cubic meters, or several bathtubs worth of fresh drinking water. This was enough for 3,000 people a day with the process continuing to run regardless of variable solar power caused by cloud coverage and rain.
[Note: Not sure what metric they're using to calculate daily water needs here. Presumably this is drinking water only.]
Dr. Wei He from the Department of Engineering at King’s College London believes the new technology could bring massive benefits to rural communities, not only increasing the supply of drinking water but also bringing health benefits.
“By offering a cheap, eco-friendly alternative that can be operated off the grid, our technology enables communities to tap into alternative water sources (such as deep aquifers or saline water) to address water scarcity and contamination in traditional water supplies,” said He.
“This technology can expand water sources available to communities beyond traditional ones and by providing water from uncontaminated saline sources, may help combat water scarcity or unexpected emergencies when conventional water supplies are disrupted, for example like the recent cholera outbreaks in Zambia.”
In the global rural population, 1.6 billion people face water scarcity, many of whom are reliant on stressed reserves of groundwater lying beneath the Earth’s surface.
However, worldwide 56% of groundwater is saline and unsuitable for consumption. This issue is particularly prevalent in India, where 60% of the land harbors undrinkable saline water. Consequently, there is a pressing need for efficient desalination methods to create fresh drinking water cheaply, and at scale.
Traditional desalination technology has relied either on costly batteries in off-grid systems or a grid system to supply the energy necessary to remove salt from the water. In developing countries’ rural areas, however, grid infrastructure can be unreliable and is largely reliant on fossil fuels...
“By removing the need for a grid system entirely and cutting reliance on battery tech by 92%, our system can provide reliable access to safe drinking water, entirely emission-free, onsite, and at a discount of roughly 22% to the people who need it compared to traditional methods,” He said.
The system also has the potential to be used outside of developing areas, particularly in agriculture where climate change is leading to unstable reserves of fresh water for irrigation.
The team plans to scale up the availability of the technology across India through collaboration with local partners. Beyond this, a team from MIT also plans to create a start-up to commercialize and fund the technology.
“While the US and UK have more stable, diversified grids than most countries, they still rely on fossil fuels. By removing fossil fuels from the equation for energy-hungry sectors like agriculture, we can help accelerate the transition to Net Zero,” He said.

This becomes way easier once you've ever lived anywhere with dodgy pipes. Super strength, maximum plush, 8 layers, quilted superdeluxe comfort can be flushed, but will eventually cause a clog if you do. So unless you're a bidet and drying-off-TP trash can household... may the odds be ever in your favor there. We all like to cause some maintenance costs for the landlord, but this is not an area where you want to wait for them to stop sitting on their hands for 3 weeks.
Least likely to cause issues is recycled or mostly recycled. Looking for that generally knocks out 80% of the offerings in store. At which point your options should be limited enough, and your experience with toilet paper extensive enough, for you to try out 2-4 kinds until you find one that's soft enough for your underside, but has the necessary structural integrity for the 10 second job it's designed to do before you eject it from your home.
“The worst part of adult life is laundry” “the worst part of adult life is changing filters” no it’s toilet paper. The worst part of being an independent adult is buying toilet paper. Have you ever actually looked at how many different kinds of toilet paper there are?10 different brands each selling 6 different kinds. It takes up an entire isle at the store. And they all look the same. And they’re all fucking expensive. I don’t know the difference between comfort and plush and ultra strong and maximum clean. It’s all going on my ass what difference does it make. And you can only get 2 rolls or 40 rolls at a time. You have to carry that big ass plastic wrapped set home and let everyone know you shit. Why is it like this? Why is cleaning my ass so complicated?

I feel like a lot of your stances revolve around defending "AI can make art" and "it's eco friendly" instead of like actually discussing the elephant in the room that is: profiteers are definitely not realizing the dream of automation with the benefit of the rest of the people in mind and maybe just maybe we should be concerned about how that is both affecting our labor AND our communities.
do you take this same attitude towards every single advancement that enables more automation in every industry across the world? that's a rhetorical question, of course you don't. because immiseration and deskilling are the inevitable result of all advancements in productivity and division of labour under capitalism. and you can start fighting the actual system behind the immiseration--you can get organized and engage in serious labour and political action--or you can keep treating the technology itself like an evil cursed talisman and i'm sure you'll do a great job of destroying it just like happened with self checkout and photography and personal computing and robots on factory lines and the spinning jenny

Digital Direct-to-Film, dtf printing is a popular method used in the custom printing industry. This technique involves printing designs directly onto a film, which is then transferred onto various surfaces such as t-shirts, hoodies, and other fabric materials. DTF printing allows for vivid, full-color transfer printing using eco-friendly water-based ink. With DTF printing, custom designs can be created with high quality and vibrant colors, resulting in visually appealing products. The process involves using a gang sheet, which is a practical tool that enables multiple designs to be printed on a gang sheet, optimizing resources and reducing material waste. This method is widely used in the custom printing industry due to its efficiency and ability to produce detailed and vibrant prints. Custom printing services offer a wide range of applications for businesses and individuals. These services allow customers to personalize their products by printing custom designs, logos, or messages on various items such as t-shirts, mugs, bags, and more. Custom tshirt is commonly used for promotional purposes, creating branded merchandise, or simply expressing personal style. With advancements in printing technology, custom printing services can produce high-quality prints with sharp details and vibrant colors, ensuring that the final product meets the customer's expectations. Whether it's for personal use or business needs, custom printing services provide a convenient and effective way to create unique and customized products. Direct to Film Transfer (DTF) is a technique used in the custom printing industry that offers several benefits. This method involves transferring designs from a film directly onto the desired surface, such as fabric or other materials. DTF transfers allow for high-quality, full-color prints with excellent durability and washability. This technique is particularly useful for creating custom t-shirts, as it provides a smooth and vibrant print that can withstand regular wear and washing. A research team led by engineers at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science is the first to explore how an emerging plant-based material, cellulose nanofibrils, could amplify the benefits of 3D-printed concrete technology. "The improvements we saw on both printability and mechanical measures suggest that incorporating cellulose nanofibrils in commercial printable materials could lead to more resilient and eco-friendly construction practices sooner rather than later," said Osman E. Ozbulut, a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His team's findings will be published in the September 2024 issue of Cement and Concrete Composites.
