Ellison was briefly struck dumb by the notion; yet, as the gallop of feet down the stairwell and rambunctious laughter drew the brunt of Carolyn’s attention, he swiftly collected himself. The mother easily corralled her pair of children and herded them back upstairs with a pointed glare. When she finally turned back, mouth set in a stern line of dwindling patience, Ellison stated, "There were family photos in the home, and he appeared to be the same man as in the pictures."

Carolyn gave him an unimpressed grunt. "Yeah, and forgery isn’t a crime as old as art. What about identification? And my mother? Did you ask to see her at all?" The set of her jaw tightened, but her volume remained flat. "You all seem to think this is about money, don't you?"

An argument not unfamiliar to the agent, he swallowed and began, "I apologize for the inconvenience, Mrs. Simons—"

"My mother is 'Mrs. Simons'!" Carolyn's voice carried in the evening air. But, the agent refused to step back, letting the well-earned wrath wash over him.

"Ms. Simons," he corrected, "I apologize, but it's my duty to gather all the facts so that our company might—"

"And that's all I'm asking for! That's all I want! My mother died, and all I want are answers; and, they're being…! He's being…!" The words swelled, and her chest heaved with them; but, unable to form the feeling on her lips, the woman bitterly exhaled and deflated. Tavis, also known as Good Leader Tavis, is the leader of a predatory cult that preys on disadvantaged teens, in order to get them to commit suicide by allowing themselves to be murdered in the Purge. While it seems that Tavis is an earnest believer of the work she is doing, seeming to believe these children are going onto a better life with their lost loved ones, it's revealed that she is being funded and protected by the NFFA (the foundation that is responsible for the purge). They are using Tavis to get rid of children that might cost the government extra expenses.

Iona Cotton is the daughter of her wealthy mother, Dina Cotton, along with her two other siblings. All of them have a very tense relationship with their mother, and decide to hire a con woman to gaslight their mother into seeming as though she has dementia. Iona is cunning and deceitful, and revels in this plan, thoroughly enjoying seeing her mother suffer.
