@jrhopkin @simonjhix @gabyhinsliff @StatModeling @chrishanretty @benwansell @drjennings @StephenDFisher This is what party attachment and vote look like based on Oesch class groups in the last round of the ESS. No idea how one would spin this into "Labour has lost all of its working class appeal" you will probably get something a little longer on the comparative perspective soon😉

CHAPTER 15
Testosterone for days
The stars were flickering in the moonless sky as the group of friends lied sprawled on the grass, empty cans of soda littering the space and loose papers and notebooks long forgotten on the table only a few steps away.
“What a beautiful night,” Thea said, her head resting on Kaya’s lap.
Sam glanced at his watch and got his phone out of the pocket of his black jeans. Celaena hadn’t texted all night, and he knew there was no point expecting her to, but she could at least reply to his texts. He typed another quick message wondering how the fight had ended and put the phone away.
Lysandra’s voice raised over the chit-chat that had taken over her backyard, always so commanding but caring.
“Should I order some more pizzas? Is anybody still hungry?”
Everybody laughed almost in unison, telling her there was no way they could fit another single bite. She had fed them all kinds of snacks during the early afternoon, and had ordered enough pizzas to feed the whole football team afterward.
“Okay, okay,” Lys laughed with them. “I’ll go fetch some more drinks then.”
“Don’t,” Sam stood up from his spot on the grass next to her. “I’ll do it this time.” He needed to move, to get a little distraction to stop worrying about Celaena. He knew worrying was pointless, but he couldn’t help it.
“I’ll help you.” Aedion stood up from Lysandra’s other side and followed him into the house through the double glass doors.
They walked through the kitchen in silence, and Sam opened the fridge and started getting cans out, and passing them over to the team captain standing behind him. Once he thought they had enough, Sam closed the fridge’s door and turned around to find Aedion staring at him.
“Did I miss anything? Do you want more cream soda?”
“Em, no, it’s okay. Just wondering if you’re okay. I know it’s none of my concern, but you seem a bit… off tonight.” Aedion was shifting his weight from one foot to the other, his arms full of rattling cans of soda.
Sam wished he could tell him the truth, but that was impossible. “I’m alright,” he said instead.
“You know, you can-” Whatever Aedion was about to say got interrupted as Ren Allsbrook walked into the kitchen from the front, as if entering his own house. There was a huge smile on his face as he greeted them.
“Hey, lads! Oh, cream soda!” The principal’s son grabbed a can out of Aedion’s arms and cracked it open as the rest of the team filled in through the hallway.
“What are you all doing here?” The captain asked while all the cans disappeared from his arms one by one.
“We knew you’d be here, and enough party organizing, it’s actual party time!” Ren patted Aedion on the back and headed towards the half-empty box with cold pizza sitting next to the fridge.
He jumped up and sat on the counter, a slice of pizza in one hand, and the soda in the other.
“Hi Sam, when are you officially joining the team?” Ress Brulleman bumped his fist and took a seat next to Ren.
“I’m not really into playing sports,” he lied. “I’d rather watch them.”
“Cheeky bugger, he likes watching the cheerleaders from the sidelines, right?” Ben hooked an arm over Sam’s shoulders casually, as if they’d been friends for their whole lives. “I’d do the same if I didn’t have to play.”
“Watch your mouth, one of those girls is mine,” Aedion said in a playful tone.
“And Sammy here is really good friends with her, isn’t he?” Ben winked, and Aedion rolled his eyes, but crossed his arms over his chest and faked a stern look.
“You know, we’re just that, really good friends,” Sam lifted his hands, hoping someone would finally understand he had no romantic interest in Lysandra.
Before Aedion could reply, the girl herself walked into the kitchen, her hands on her hips as she took over the scene. Ress and Ren were seated on the counter side by side, chewing on their slices of cold pizza. Ben still had an arm around Sam’s shoulders, standing by the fridge. And Aedion was standing by the kitchen isle, his arms folded, while Ilias was silently standing to one side, a half-smile on his lips.
“I don’t recall inviting you guys to my place,” Lys said with her brows furrowed. “But, welcome!” She added with a huge smile as she relaxed and went over to hug each of them individually.
“Should I order more pizza?” She asked as she finished her round and went to stand next to her boyfriend, an arm wrapped around his waist and her head resting on his shoulder.
Sam watched the smile that spread on Aedion’s lips, the way his eyes traveled down to Lysandra’s hair as he pressed a kiss to the top of her head. He raised an arm to play with one of her long brown curls as the rest of the team cheered and thanked her for the food and hospitality.
“Okay, let me go make the call.” Aedion squeezed Lys’ waist before he let go and she walked out of the room.
“Fuck, you did win the lottery with that one,” Ren said with a mouthful as they all watched her walk away.
“I did.” Aedion’s reply stung in Sam’s chest, and he shook his head, walking out of the kitchen as he excused himself.
He heard the boys starting to chatter loudly again as he opened the glass doors and slipped onto the backyard. He sat back down on his previous spot, joining the cheerleader’s conversation as if he’d never left.
“Definitely Ress!” Briar was saying. She blushed a little as Sam joined them, but kept going. “I mean, he’s got that beautiful ash-blond hair that always looks a little messy, and he just seems so cute! I think he’s the kind of guy that’d pamper the shit out of his partner.”
“No, no, no way,” Ansel was saying. “He seems too innocent, and also, he’s into dudes! I think Ilias would be a better partner in crime, the quiet ones always hide something interesting under their sleeves.”
“I agree,” Thea said as she laughed a little. “You know, if I liked boys, I think he’d be more like my type. The dark hair, and those compelling green eyes.”
“Thea!” Kaya said as she ruffled her hair.
“What? You like both boys and girls, you tell me what you think then! The fact that I don’t like boys doesn’t mean I can’t comment, right Sam?”
Sam cleared his throat and ran a hand through his messy hair, looking through the kitchen doors and watching the boys still eating cold pizza and being silly. “I don’t know,” he said.
“Come on, we’ll make it easier,” Ansel quipped. “Best eyes out of those guys in there.”
“Ilias,” Thea and Ansel said at the same time.
“Aedion,” Kaya giggled.
“I’ll stick with Ress,” Briar said, shrugging.
“What? He’s got boring brown eyes!” Ansel complained.
“Not true! Anyways, Sam?”
“Okay, I think... I’ll vote for Aedion’s too,” Sam said, laughing a little at the silly game.
“Yes!” Kaya jumped up, making Thea jump to a sitting position too as her head bounced on Kaya’s lap.
“Next,” Ansel said, lifting a hand. “Best body?”
All the girls seemed to think it over for a moment, looking through the glass to inspect the team.
“Ren,” Ansel concluded.
“Ditto,” Kaya agreed.
“I’ll go with Ben,” Thea said, getting booed for it. “What? He’s a bit shorter and skinny, he’ll be a better match for me, I’d look like a gnome next to any of the others!” Everybody laughed at this, and Sam leaned back on his elbows.
“I’ll vote for Aedion,” Briar said, blushing all over again.
“What are you voting my boyfriend for?” Lys approached the group and sat next to Sam.
“They’re voting for the best body in the team,” he explained.
“Oh, I’ll definitely go with Aedion too! You should see him without his clothes on,” Lys wiggled her eyebrows, her lips tugging up in that huge smile that could light up a whole room as everybody laughed out loud.
“What about you, Sam?” Ansel pushed.
“Are you playing too?” Lys turned to him with an eyebrow raised, and Sam’s cheeks heated up.
“They made me,” he said innocently.
“You know,” Lysandra scooted closer to him and lowered her voice. “You can vote for him too, I wouldn’t mind.” Sam watched Lysandra with his eyes wide open, and she cracked up laughing. “Time for a new game, girls, the boys are about to join!” Lysandra said once the laughter eased.
As if on cue, the boys walked into the yard, Ren holding a pile of pizza boxes in his hands, while Ilias carried a keg of beer over his shoulder as if it was a stereo. Ben popped a little speaker on the grass inside the circle of assembled girls, and the music started playing as the boys sat on the grass. Cups started to circulate, the chatter got louder and seconds seemed to blur into minutes, and hours.
The girls danced a little choreography as the boys sang and clapped, the team started playing drinking games, making bets, and suddenly, somehow, Ren was jumping into the pool in his underwear and calling everybody a chicken for not following. Ben was the first to follow him in, his back muscles flexing as he jumped headfirst, his little black boxers snuggly fit around his thighs. Ress cannonballed while he laughed, splashing everybody and making the girls all stand up as they squealed.
The three boys jumped out, soaking wet and dripping water, and ran after the girls, lifting them in the air and dropping them into the pool with their clothes still on. Thea and Kaya went in first, almost at the same time, and came out screaming and complaining about how cold the water was.
“Don’t you dare!” Ansel yelled as Ren ran after her. As she ran, she took her top over her head, threw it to a side, and ran straight to the pool, jumping head first. “I rather do things my way,” she said as her head poked back out of the water, and she showed Ren the middle finger. Her lace bra was as red as her hair, and her freckles looked like stars fallen from the skies.
Seconds later, Aedion was cradling Lysandra in his arms as he walked towards the pool. Lys was pouting her lips, looking like a little child, but she didn’t complain as Aedion jumped in and she wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Ilias, Sam, come one! Jump in!” Ben yelled from inside the pool.
Ilias was standing as far away as possible, leaning against the wall of the house. “I’m good, thanks,” he said solemnly, and Ben shrugged.
“Sam?”
“I rather not,” Sam grabbed his phone out of his pocket and checked for any messages. Even if Celaena was scheduled for the last fight, she should have finished by now, and still, she hadn't texted him. Maybe he should go over to the hotel, check if she was back, see how the fight had gone.
“Come on,” Lysandra said, showing up by his side and grabbing the phone off his hand. She set the phone on the grass with the rest of their things and pushed him gently with a hand against his lower back. Suddenly, she smiled a mischievous smile as she yelped: “Now!”
She shoved him forward, and Aedion tackled him by his middle, scooped him up onto his shoulder, and ran the few feet separating them from the pool. The water hit him hard, waking up all of his senses. The water was freezing cold, and his shirt got stuck to his skin as he jumped out for air. Everybody around him was laughing, and a few of them were clapping.
“Great tackle, captain!” Ren high fived Aedion.
Lysandra jumped back in, and swam to their side, wrapping an arm around Aedion’s shoulders and letting her body float, her foot intently brushing the side of Sam’s arm.
“Stay,” Lys mouthed to him as if she could read his mind; as if she knew he was planning on leaving only a minute ago.
So Sam took his soaking wet shirt over his head, threw it on the grass, and stayed.

5 - One In, One Out
On the 1st of January at 12:02 AM, the following took place at The Wash nightclub in Dalston.
On the roof terrace:
Graham shuddered to the first orgasm he had ever shared with another person and thought that this was going to be the best year ever.
Florence suddenly wondered if she had remembered to take her pill. She was pretty sure she had. Almost definitely.
Paul was one of many people who were pretending they couldn’t see the couple shagging behind the azalea bushes.
Simone was wondering why there weren’t any fireworks.  Weren’t there supposed to be fireworks on New Years Eve? Where were the fireworks?
Fergus was considering throwing Simone off the roof if she didn’t shut up about fireworks.
Tammy was having her last cigarette before quitting.
Keith was trying to discreetly roll a spliff without attracting too much attention.
Georgina thought Keith looked like a young Jeremy Vine. Apart from the dreadlocks, obviously.
Maria was trying to get people singing and didn’t understand why no one was joining in.
Claudette was one of several people wondering why Maria was singing “How Much is That Doggy In The Window?”
Hadley wanted to go back inside.
Sandeep was wondering who his ex-girlfriend had kissed at midnight.
Tara thought she and Sandeep had a future together.
Harry was wondering who the fuck invited their dad out for New Year’s Eve.
Ron was talking about the pills back in the day and how you just had to take one and you were on one for the rest of the night.
Chas hadn’t felt old until he’d seen the expressions of amused contempt on the faces of those kids as they took the piss out of his brother.
Billy looked at the skyline and wondered what the year ahead would bring.
 On the upper staircase:
Caroline was crying.
Julianne had her arm around Caroline, was rubbing her shoulder and said “there, there” but wasn’t really in the mood to be going through these dramas so early in the evening.
Nicholas stood around awkwardly, wondering what – if anything – he could do.
Genovese was knocking on the office door, so Ken could reset the credit card terminal.
In the office:
Ken was busy racking up lines of coke.
DJ Dan Diamond was promising himself that he would stop taking crappy bookings in these shitty two-bit clubs.
Chantelle was wondering if Ken expected her to shag DJ Dan Diamond.
Vicki wished she’d been able to get tickets for Ministry.
Pete was fairly sure he’d once had a handjob from DJ Dan Diamond at a festival in Berlin.
 In the stock cupboard:
A mouse was nibbling on a pistachio nut.
 In the first floor bar:
Sam was ignoring his boss’s previous warnings about drug use and necked two pills behind the bar.
Georgia thought that if Sam wanted to keep his job, he should either be more discreet or learn how to share.
Hamish still couldn’t get served, even when there was nobody else standing there.
Chris wasn’t sure whether to say Happy New Year to Pauline or Sabrina, so just stood there with his arms half outstretched to the room in general.
Sabrina was hugging Pauline and telling her that it was going to be their year. THEIR YEAR.
Pauline wished that Sabrina hadn’t eaten so much garlic before coming out.
Freddie was waiting for Sabrina to shut up so he could say Happy New Year to Pauline.
Tim was putting something in Pauline’s drink.
Kenneth wasn’t sure he wanted to hang around with Tim any more.
Michelle was wishing that she had stayed at home.
Tom was wishing that Michelle would take that look off her face and at least pretend to have a good time.
Carol hoped that she and Julius didn’t end up like Tom and Michelle.
Julius felt homesick.
Maxine was sick, but kept her mouth shut and was doing her best to swallow it without anyone noticing.
Jack tried to make a move on Maxine and didn’t understand why she wouldn’t kiss him.
Sharon watched Jack make a fool of himself and knew that she would be the one he went home with at the end of the night.
Andy thought he definitely was in with Sharon.
Penelope suddenly felt a sharp pain under her chin, like she’d been punched by an iron fist. She fell to the floor and was dead before reached it.
Kevin thought that Penelope was just staggering because she was drunk and was about to laugh at her. Then he saw the blood.
Jocasta was about to slap that fucking bitch that was bumping into her.
Coralina wished she’d worn better shoes. That heel was just about to snap.
Patti wasn’t going to be able to take her top back tomorrow. Not with Bacardi spilled down the back and sweat in the pits.
Carl had his hands on the skinny arse of some girl he had been introduced to twice, but whose name he had forgotten.
Jemima wondered if wanting to get off with a black guy - any black guy - was racist.
Callie had never seen what happened to Jemima when she drank and now understood why she generally only had lemonade at their works do’s.
Samson wanted to know why this one wasn’t as much fun as her friend.
Roxanne wondered what the point of wearing makeup and putting on nice clothes when guys went for scruffy old tarts.
Jack thought seventy-five a gram was extortionate, even for New Year’s Eve.
Toby would have given the gear away for free if it meant he could go home and be with Joy and the baby, but Ansell needed his money and wouldn’t take no for an answer.
Sandra watched the deal go down and reminded herself that she was off-duty.
Bea was only pretending to be drunk. It was the only way she could justify acting the way she did.
Kayleigh wondered why Bea had to get so wankered every time they went out.
 On the lower staircase:
Kyle was explaining this theory about a universal consciousness and how we are all different vibrational frequencies of the same energy.
Sharon had no fucking idea what this guy was on about.
Pauline was just pleased that she had found somewhere to sit down.
Derek had surreptitiously bombed a load of speed and wanted to head back to the dancefloor.
Rose made a joke about ants in the pants, then blushed furiously for no discernible reason.
Luke had no idea that the woman he was snogging would be his wife by this time next year.
Cora was glad she had brought mints and condoms out with her.
Dave skipped down the stairs two at a time, keen to get back to the serious business of strutting his stuff.
 In the gents toilet:
Bill was completely missing the target and pissing all over his shoes.
Kamal couldn’t go.
Wendall was thinking that if he didn’t pull tonight, he might try being gay for a bit.
Nigel was remembering the time he ate a urinal cake for a bet and had to go and have his stomach pumped. Why didn’t he have nights like that any more?
David didn’t notice that there was blood in his piss, but could feel the stinging sensation.
Pete was trying not to be rude as he knocked on the cubicle door, but he was about twelve seconds away from shitting his pants.
Clyde told whoever it was outside knocking to fuck off and die.
Jacques was tapping his arm, trying to find a vein.
Andre hated toilet men and tried not to make eye contact.
Keith smiled as he held out a towel to the guy washing his hands.
Idris waited patiently for his turn and was careful not to make eye contact with anyone or any thing.
In the main room:
DJ Cheddar didn’t care if it made him a sellout - this year he was definitely going to produce a mash-up version of “Auld Lang Syne” and make a fortune.
Cheryl had dropped a contact lens and was weighing up the pros and cons of trying to find it versus spending the rest of the night winking like a pirate.
Liz wished she wasn’t on her period.
Kevin thought Liz smelled funny.
Theresa had dropped six pills and didn’t feel a thing. If she saw that scrawny fucker that had ripped her off, she was going to rip his tits off.
Dreamer was just there for the music. He didn’t hold with this new years shit.
Christos had been dancing for over and hour and hadn’t moved his feet once.
Sami thought house was for poofs and hairdressers, but these girls seemed to be into it, so…
Hector made the box.
Charlene liked to dance, but preferred it if guys were a bit clumsy. For some reason, she found it reassuring.
Veronica had been saving the last few drops of her vodka and coke for twenty minutes, waiting for someone to buy her a drink.
Bettina wondered why she was getting funny looks.
Lewis didn’t want to stare, but couldn’t help but notice that girl’s dress had gone totally see-through.
Bernard didn’t mind staring at all.
Francis thought they didn’t make tunes like this any more, even though the song had, in fact, only been released three weeks ago.
Indigo would rather have been in Bali.
Karl couldn’t work out what that guy was so upset about.
Frank knew trouble when he saw it and was pushing Karl and Dayton away from the dance floor.
Dayton was pissed off they had to leave. That girl in the see through dress was hot.
Fiona saw the flash above the crowd and thought it was a firecracker.
Ben did his best to aim Stephan’s hand way from the crowd, but couldn’t stop him from pulling the trigger.
Stephen had got the gun from his uncle and would have used it on that pussyhole motherfucker, if Ben hadn’t smacked his hand upwards and sent the shot into the ceiling.
Jason felt his eardrum burst as something loud exploded near his head.
Isaac knew what that pop meant and started running for the door.
Jen wanted to know where the fuck Isaac was going.
Freya didn’t know what the fight was about, but felt certain that her stupid little brother had been the cause of it.
Gemini thought it was typical. You couldn’t go for a dance without stupid men ruining everything.
Inga wanted chips.
Marco was feeling self conscious, but didn’t want anyone to know it.
Heidi was never drinking Jagermeister again.
Delores was considering a round of Aftershocks.
Jacqui thought she might go blonde this year.
Krystof kept one eye on his rucksack, which was in the corner of the room.
 In the ladies toilet:
Kirsty had noticed that one of her pupils was larger than the other and couldn’t stop staring at them.
Petra was wondering if her top made her look too slutty… or not slutty enough.
Christine was systematically washing every square centimeter of her hands while counting to five hundred and fifty five.
Jessie was using her lipstick to write “Cora is a big fat slag” on the cubicle wall.
Verity was wondering whether she could ask the girl in the next cubicle if there was any loo roll in hers.
Kat thought she felt something snap in her nose as she took that last bump.
Gina didn’t like the way Kat was scratching.
Louise had totally emptied her stomach, but still had the dry heaves.
Clair was holding back Louise’s hair and wondering whether putting her in a cab and sending her home alone made her a bad person.
Joe was having his first night out as a woman and apart from a couple of odd looks here and there, was actually starting to have a good time.
In the cloakroom:
Petra realised that she’d forgotten to put any tickets on hangers and was looking intently at items of clothing to see if she could remember to whom they belonged.
Paolo slid an iPhone out of a coat pocket and put it in his bag.
 On the door:
Ansell was telling a pissed student to fuck off home.
Miguel was laughing.
Donald didn’t know why these guards were outside his hall of residence and wouldn’t let him go to his room.
Tania was one minute into the New Year and had already broken her resolution to stop smoking.
Heidi was wishing she’d worn tights. It was freezing out there.
Donna thought that drunk guy went to her university and might be on her Introduction to Economic Theory course.
Marie was trying to get a signal on her phone to send messages to all her friends.
Penny had a signal, but no messages.

Every Baby Name We Could Possibly Think Of
Naming your baby is a big decision, and with endless options, it can also be a difficult one. Whether you're going the traditional route or want something more unique (if so, read this first!) it's helpful to have a little, or a lot, of inspiration. Ahead, you'll find nearly every baby name we could think of (close to 1,000!). These aren't just random names we found in a book or concocted ourselves - they're almost all monikers we've heard being used, or we actually know someone who goes by the name. If we missed any, tell us in the comments! 15 November 2019
I'm into summit good
To King's Place this Tuesday and this year's #ODISummit. Lots of excellent discussion - including a keynote from Caroline Criado Perez (illustrative book extract here) - and (as with #odcamp a couple of weeks ago) a real sense of a community growing up, asking more challenging and fundamental questions of itself and what we think we can achieve through open data than ever before.
Thanks to the ODI for asking me to take part in the closing conversation, with Jeni and Ollie from Telefonica Alpha Health. Three points I think I made:
Ironically, for a data community, I think we're still grappling with a couple of big data-related problems - difficulties in quantifying the value of better use of (open) data, and memory (or, to be techy, knowledge and information management) problems - are we really making the best of all the experience and expertise at our disposal, or are we just talking about Citymapper, again?
Flowing from that... We still need to get better at talking about data. That includes knowing what it is we talk about when we talk about data (for me, that's the whole gamut from official statistics to evidence in policy-making to personal data in public services to information that isn't numbers to institutional memory, and shameless repetition of this useful thought from Tim Gordon). But it's also - well, all the things in this tweet.
Any excuse to repeat the seven big points that various civil society groups think the National Data Strategy should cover. They still seem to be holding up well, exactly the right set of points to convene a campaign around, say, but interested to hear if we've missed anything.
In other news:
This week saw the launch of the latest IfG/CIPFA Performance Tracker report, charting public service performance. Check out the launch here - and one of the best IfG data tweets ever, from Graham, here.
There'll be more from Graham on that subject (Performance Tracker, not looking longingly at charts) on the latest IfG podcast later. As threatened, my 'Speed Data' bit now has all the hallmarks of becoming a regular feature, so listen out for some more sonification.
If you can't wait that long, my excellent colleague Melissa has pulled all the IfG Data Bites events into a series of podcasts, here. Though the less said about this the better.
And finally...
The choir I'm a member of, the New Tottenham Singers, will be performing a Christmas concert on Saturday 14 December. Come! And help raise some money for Crisis this Christmas.
If you know someone aged 12-18 who's interested in writing about subjects that matter, please encourage them to enter this year's Orwell Youth Prize.
Have a great weekend
Gavin
