sinopsis: Mi año de descanso y relajación, Ottessa Moshfegh hace de Manhattan el epicentro de una civilización, la del año 2000, dominada por la apatía. Como una oscura bella durmiente, la narradora de esta novela decide encerrarse durante un año en su piso de una de las zonas más exclusivas de Nueva York, asistida por una herencia ingente y por una gran cantidad de fármacos, para dedicarse a dormir y ver películas de Whoopi Goldberg y Harrison Ford. El inicio de un siglo supuestamente trepidante encuentra a nuestra protagonista durmiendo en el sofá con la tele encendida. Con mucho cinismo, series, películas comerciales y narcóticos, y a costa de cortar todo vínculo humano, cualquiera puede sobrellevar esta vida. Ahora bien, ¿lo que queremos es sobrellevarla?

Tengo sentimientos encontrados sobre este libro, puedo decir que me gustó pero es brillante? es pretenciosa? es peligrosa? No estoy segura 😵‍💫.

Lo que no hay duda es que la prosa de la autora es asombrosa, pasa de presente a pasado sin que te des cuenta, y básicamente hace que una historia con un ritmo muy calmo sea atrayente e imposible de abandonar, aunque, eso sí, la energía deprimente es algo contagiosa.

Básicamente la trama es como una chick-lit sobre depresión y existencialismo, con todo y su dosis de critica social. E incluso con los conflictos internos y los problemas medio turbios sobre relaciones sociales/amorosas/parentales, para mi fue prácticamente imposible no sentir tantita molestia por todos los privilegios mal aprovechados. Sí, admito que por ratos juzgaba eso de "la gente rica también se deprime" pero que puedo decir? viendo los inexistentes padecimientos económicos y laborales aquí, se me tiene que excusar al menos en eso, por favor 😓🫴.

De todos modos, hubo puntos muy geniales y hasta acertados, sobre todo en lo de la decidía y el agotamiento sobre la vida, como que la idea de dormir para evitar la realidad y el sobre-pensar es algo que en algún momento se nos ha pasado por la mente, solo que aquí las cosas se llevan al extremo.

Hay poquitos personajes, todos me han preocupado bastante con el pasar de los capítulos, y es ese tipo de preocupación que sentirías cuando vez muchas banderas rojas, sobre todo con la protagonista, aunque me parece genial su pasividad, hipocresía y reflexiones, me ha inquietado su excesiva indiferencia hacia básicamente todo, especialmente porque esto empeora, #EstaChicaMePreocupa.

Y en general, hay ironías pero el ritmo de la trama es lineal, aquí no hay acción ni violencia, sin embargo, hay una salvajada enorme en cuanto al consumo de medicamentos, y en este punto hasta es algo fantasioso, quiero decir, con tremenda cantidad ingerida, no muestran consecuencias más realistas, aparte de las sensaciones alucinógenas, el insomnio y las lagunas mentales (sin exagerar, con cada cóctel descrito, ya me dolía el hígado 🤢).

En fin, creo que no es un libro para todos (sobre todo porque tiene una lista extensa de trigger warnings), aun así, quien quiera leerlo no debe esperarse mas que una aventura rara y pasiva con excesos de somníferos y muchas reflexiones.

Review: Earwig and the Witch

Young Erica, born as “Earwig,” doesn’t live an enviable life by as any means—abandoned at the doorstep of an orphanage by her mother, she has little hope of ever being adopted. But Earwig lives life on her own terms, cajoling those around her to do her bidding, but also giving them warmth and love. However, a wrench (or ladle) is thrown into her plans when a demanding witch and a devilish and ill-tempered man do adopt her, and she becomes a virtual slave to the woman, doing arduous and mundane chores all day long while being magically guarded from escaping her new home. But it’ll take far more than spells and grumpy magic users to prevent the clever and bombastic Earwig from getting her way, and with her own use of magic, a cat familiar named Thomas, and the power of music, she’ll find a way to right her world again.

Earwig and the Witch, made available to stream on HBO Max just two days after it’s theatrical release and a month following its television premiere in Japan, enters a brave new world of film distribution, so perhaps this was the perfect opportunity for Goro Miyazaki, ever the dissenter, to bring something new into the Studio Ghibli fold of animated films. While Earwig features many of the usual Ghibli earmarks—a strong heroine, colorful visuals, and source material from a beloved author, the second Diana Wynne Jones novel that’s been adapted (joining Howl’s Moving Castle), it is also animated in 3DCG, a first for the studio’s animated features, which had once long-resisted the transition from traditional hand-drawn animation to computer imagery. Unfortunately, and predictably, the result is another red mark by the younger Miyazaki upon Ghibli’s otherwise grade-A record.

The story itself is the usual stuff of Ghibli—just modernized a bit. Earwig is reminiscent of another witch, Kiki— both girls are trying to find their places in the world, and are willing to do what it takes to get there. Earwig will also remind viewers of Nausicaa, as she’ll roll over anyone in her way to achiever her goals. But this little girl is more charming that it sounds, doing everything with intelligence and smile. Indeed, Earwig is a fine heroine, another addition to the wonderful group assembled and created by Studio Ghibli through the years, while her new guardians—Bella Yaga and Mandrake—are well-developed and distinct as well. The plot, too, is fine—small and self-contained. But there are severe structural problems and flaws that prevent the movie from ever taking off, so that when it lands at the end, the audience isn’t hit with the feelings of love and contentment that are a hallmark of Ghibli.

Most notable among the issues is the poor CG work. While Earwig is the studio’s first fully CGI film, the company has done considerable work of that style before with the television series, Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter, featuring computer graphics based on cel-shading. The leap to a fully realized 3DGI film, however, is too much for Miyazaki (who oversaw the work on Ronja). The characters are lifeless in their movements, lacking vitality, particularly punctuated through a musical number late in the film that is perhaps the lamest “rock scene” you’ll ever watch. Despite occasionally rich coloring, and some wonderful detailing, the backgrounds are also stiff and unengaging. It’s a chore to watch the film, which in visuals too closely resembles features released straight to Redbox. Even the cute little servants, another frequent companion in Studio Ghibli films, aren’t cute at all—they’re pale and hard to make out, a shame since it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a particular chick-demon joining the vast array of beloved Ghibli characters.

The music, too, is lacking. A score composed by Satoshi Takebe is mostly forgettable; his major sin, however, is shared with Goro Miyazaki, who wrote the lyrics for “Don’t Disturb Me,” an apparent 70’s rock song that’s too sugary for rock, an annoyance to the ears that’s worsened by terrible lyrics that no adult or child could embrace. Even Kacey Musgraves, the lead singer for the song and voice of Earwig’s absent mother, can’t save this wreck. She’s an odd selection for the role, too, not only because of her musical style but also for her not-quite-there British accent, which at least disappears when she sings.

But even with it’s shortcomings, even with English dub work that doesn’t quite match the flaps, the movie is a moderate watch because of an underlying sweetness in the characters and the little flourishes of Ghibli that make their way out here and there—that is until the ending. I imagine that Mandrake himself (played lovingly by the inimitable Richard E. Grant), a would-be-author, would empathize with writers who struggle with conclusions, but this is twice now that Miyazaki has clumsily finished a film. He took a strong opening 2/3 of Tales from Earthsea and let it devolve into a messy finale, and this time, he does the same by bringing together story elements too quickly and with too little closure, while doing something even more peculiar, creating a conclusion that isn’t one at all. Instead, the close of this story seems like the opening for a television series that will more fully explore the world of Earwig. Looking at the less-than-feature-film quality of this movie, that may indeed be a wise choice.

More disastrous, though, is the very end, the closing credits. Drawn in the traditional style of Ghibli films, it portrays Earwig’s life after the events of the film, and for once, the movie rises completely to the charm and loveliness of what one expects from the studio. Suddenly, the movie is as magical as it tries to be, the characters lovable and cute, and the family at its most compelling. It’s everything that Earwig and the Witch could have been—what it should have been.

In an interview promoting the film, Goro Miyazaki, when explaining why this movie would be in 3DCG, explained, “…if we don’t incorporate new things, then there’s probably no future for us.” An unfortunate truth lies within these words, ones that weren’t intended: Miyazaki and the new generation cannot match the mastery of the old. All they seem to be able to offer are “new things.” But if the new things aren’t masterful—when they aren’t even good—it begs the question: What future does Studio Ghibli have at all? If it looks and sounds like Earwig, the answer may be “none.”

Grazie mille @petalina​!!! Le nove locandine che ricordano la mia infanzia sono queste. Ho avuto un po’ di difficoltà nel trovarle perché non mi ricordavo cosa mi piacesse da piccola, ma sono abbastanza soddisfatta di ciò che ho trovato.

1) The Ring mi ricorda un po’ la fine delle elementari, l’inizio delle medie, quando venivano le mie amiche a casa e guardavamo “video spaventosi fantasma beccato in camera da guardare assolutamente!!!!”, per poi spostarci a film horror... che non ci facevano neanche paura. Ero molto meno suscettibile da piccola, ora non riesco a guardare nulla mentre prima mangiavo film e libri horror come se non ci fosse un domani.  2) SPIDER-MAN. Quante volte avrò visto questo film, non si sa. Ogni volta che lo mettevano in tv, ogni volta che non sapevo cosa guardare, la mia scelta andava su questo film (e poi il due e il tre). Avevo i CD, quelli masterizzati da mio zio “quello che ne sa di questa roba tecnologica”, con il nome scritto con pennarello indelebile. Lo infilavo nella Playstation e lo guardavo tutto, non me ne perdevo un pezzo, soprattutto le scene con Mary-Jane ;-). Era davvero uno dei miei film preferiti. 3) Tre uomini e una gamba. Ovviamente, Aldo, Giovanni e Giacomo non potevano mancare. L’avevo visto per caso, la prima volta, mentre mia madre guardava la tv di sera e non mi era importato granché. Ma ogni volta che li facevano in tv, io lo riguardavo, c’era qualcosa che mi piaceva di questo film, nonostante non capissi bene l’umorismo, che mi attirava. Col tempo ovviamente mi sono appassionata a tutti i loro film e me li riguardo periodicamente, cominciando sempre da questo. 4) Bee Movie. Non c’è neanche bisogno di pensarci. Film visto e rivisto per colpa di mia sorella che era ed è tutt’ora ossessionata. Avevamo anche il videogioco, in cui ero rimasta bloccata tipo SUBITO e non l’ho mai finito, perché poi mia sorella ha avuto la bella idea di lavare la Playstation con acqua e sapone perché era molto impolverata, come se spolverandola non avesse potuto fare comunque un buon lavoro. Vabbè. Cose che succedono.. se hai una sorella cretina. Magari un giorno compro il CD originale e potrò finalmente finirlo, come ho fatto con Madagascar e Ratatuille.  5) Magic English!!!! Stupendo. Magnifico. Mi divertivo un sacco mentre cantavo le canzoni disney in inglese con mia sorella, le abbiamo quasi consumate da quanto guardavamo queste videocassette. Un ricordo magico (eh) della mia infanzia. Magari se trovo un videoregistratore che funziona, posso riguardarlo assieme altri film che guardavo il periodo. 6) Harry Potter. Per ricordare la mia fase “potterhead”, esistente fino poco tempo fa, e da cui per fortuna sono uscita perché ero una pazza furiosa. Ma quando c’è in tv, lo riguardo volentieri e ogni tanto ne rileggo un libro a caso.  7) Scary Movie. Ma è normale che potessi guardare film del genere alle elementari? Se un mio figlio ipotetico guardasse una cosa del genere boh.. non so se glielo permetterei. Ogni tanto li riguardo, questo e il secondo, perché sono i migliori e sono anche i produttori di White Chicks, il mio film comico preferito nell’universo. 8) Spirited Away, ovviamente, per non dimenticarci della mia fase OTAKU XD XD XD, ma è un film veramente stupendo, come il resto dei film dello Studio Ghibli. I paesaggi, la storia, i personaggi. Magnifico.  9) LA SOLITUDINE DEI NUMERI PRIMI. Osceno. La delusione più grande della mia infanzia. Un film così brutto io non l’ho mai visto. Ho deciso di guardarlo dopo aver letto il libro, uno dei miei preferiti del periodo, lo avevo amato più della mia vita. E questo film ha rovinato tutto, mi ha fatto schifo, più schifo di qualsiasi altra cosa al mondo, così tanto schifo che a 10 minuti dalla fine non ce l’ho fatta più, ho dovuto spegnere. Non ci stavo capendo nulla NONOSTANTE avessi letto il libro e l’avessi capito appieno, i personaggi erano odiosi, la storia frammentata e confusionaria. Ora, ogni volta che penso al libro, di cui ormai ho dimenticato quasi tutto, non riesco neanche a rileggerlo perché penso a quanto mi abbia fatto schifo quel film. Che delusione. Che tristezza.

So bene che non bisognava spiegare la scelta ma chissene, oggi sono ispirata.

Sexy, Strong, and Powerful: The Flight of the Woman’s Wrestler

I wrote something called the Plight of the Diva when I had a Wordpress blog. Basically I said, in that time, women’s wrestling wasn’t getting much respect. (This was during the two to three minute matches that I watched.) They were treated like eye candy as well. Only a handful of them was decent in the ring. (See the likes of Candice Michelle and Melina in my adolescence, recently AJ Lee and Kaitlyn are some examples.)

Now the difference between then and now is... currently I’m 28. Then I was a hormone raging teenager which made me appreciate them for the wrong reasons, to be honest. Then, the WWF/E had Divas posing for Playboy, like Sable, the aforementioned Candice Michelle, Maria Kannellis, and the late Ashley Massaro. Now, the women of WWE have a whole new appreciation. They main evented a Wrestlemania... (we’re not going to mention how that went, though.) They had their own special event, Evolution. They had their first Royal Rumble, Hell in a Cell, and Elimination Chamber matches recently as well. And it all started with one hashtag that I admittedly did as well, because I was tired of it all: “Give Divas a Chance.” The women of WWE used to be objectified. Their moniker was “Sexy, strong, and powerful.” What’s crazy is... they still are. 

It’s amazing how for every Nikki and Brie Bella, there’s God’s Greatest Creation and her fierce cage fighting bestie. For every anti-Diva, there is a girl not like most. For every Queen, there is a Man waiting for her waiting. And The Queen of Harts will just have to feel... the... glow. And I didn’t even get to my personal favorite... an ass kicking Empress or her adorable pirate friend! Or a Boss Chick (who just happens to be Snoop Dogg’s cousin...) who knows she’s the best. Or her best friend, the now so not-so-innocent ex-hugger, who is strictly a role model now. And you can’t forget the Iconic ones! No one can! Of course, Mella IS money. Oh, yeah. Another thing: Let Nikki Play! Or her diminutive friend will get Blissed off. See what I did there? And with my girl Dana... you gotta have Flex appeal. Last, but certainly not least... you can’t forget the OG and the Monday night MILF. I’m not even counting NXT! Oh, yeah. There was a certain MMA fighter that was here too. Pretty damn hot.

One hashtag changed the world on women’s wrestling. I was there. They were “Sexy, strong, and powerful”, but I say they’re more than that. Little girls want to be them. Men want to be with them. They dropped the monikers, but they’re still powerful and sexy as they ever were. Right?
