Another mire of confusion are the various states that have been called Congo, or some variation thereof.  The current Democratic Republic of Congo, for example, was once known as the Congo Free State (1885-1908), after King Leopold II of Belgium convinced the other imperial powers with ventures in the region that his vision of a corporate state controlled entirely by him, and separately from his Belgian monarchic duties, was a great idea.  In 1908, the state was renamed the Belgian Congo when the extent of the rape of the Congo basin by King Leopold’s corporate state representatives finally garnered enough notice by some of the other imperial powers in Africa that the Belgian government intervened.  Upon gaining independence in 1960, the name was changed to the Republic of Congo - not to be confused with the Republic of Congo next door.  [Not surprisingly, Léopoldville was at that time the capital - as opposed to Brazzaville next door.]  The Democratic Republic of the Congo was declared in 1964, and Léopoldville renamed Kinshasa not long after, but then in 1971, the name was changed to the Republic of Zaire, which lasted until 1997, whereupon the Zairians fell back to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).  And all these name changes are mere symptoms of the terrible deeds occurring at every turn....in case anyone was under the impression that a few misprints, or, you know, colonialism, were negligible.
