Sorry, “small bets” are not enough to build large-scale software
TTL7: Asymmetrical Bets Sorry, “small bets” are not enough to build large-scale software
TTL 7 Asymmetrical Bets 👋 Good Morfternight, this is Paolo Belcastro, with the seventh issue of TTL: Tools & Thoughts for Leaders. This is an odd one I’m writing this from a windowless room in an airport hotel in São Paulo 🇧🇷 My first plane was delayed, and the second one was not, and that’s why I’m stuck here. Just another reminder that we live in a stochastic world, where everything is…

3.What math classes did you like the most?
Hmmm…. I think it really depends on the teacher and class environment for me. I’m sometimes wistful for the days of Linear Algebra. It was my first exposure to college mathematics and the professor was so sweet. I asked incessant questions and he took the care to answer each one. I had a pretty [I want to say substandard but considering the standard is so low,,,] unsatisfactory math education up to this point and I was mostly self taught in math, so he helped fill some of those gaps. For example, in a discussion after class he helped me understand for the first time the issue with dividing by zero. I then asked if there was a vector space where you could divide by zero. He said he didn’t know. Not too long after, I received this email:
Finally feeling like my questions mattered, like my ideas were important, that I could have the freedom to explore and be respected as a student, these are the things which eventually lead to me deciding to pursue a PhD in pure mathematics.
18.Can you share a good math problem you’ve solved recently?
Absolutely. Contrary to (maybe?) popular belief- the best and most satisfying problems to solve are not necessarily the ones with the most prerequisite knowledge.
I’m taking a class right now called Teaching Geometry Through Problem Solving (GPS). We’re learning how to teach geometry using the Pósa method by learning through the method (which, side-note, has greatly increased my motivation to try and find answers on my own instead of being like hmmm cool problem, and moving on) and even though the problems have secondary school level prerequisite knowledge, they can get really tricky. Here are two of my favorites which have rather simpler solutions:
I like them because I was proud of my unique solution method, and there are multiple ways to solve them. Try a hand at them yourself!
If you’re in the market for more low-stakes, relaxing, fun geometry (or other) problems like theses, definitely hmu, I am amassing a great collection.
52.Do you have favorite math textbooks? If so, what are they?
Discrete Mathematics with Ducks by Sarah Marie Belcastro all the way!!! If you can get your hands on it, and you’re interested in discrete maths, for sure check it out.
53.Do you collect anything that is math-related?
Debt <3
59.Can you recommend any online resources for math?
So, I mean, this is pretty open-ended. I’m gonna put a few of my favorite math communicators/ fun recreational maths links:
Vihart: <3 always my #1 OnlineKyne: drag+math???? Iconic 3Blue1Brown: A classic also I got to chat with him which was awesome xkcd: the best webcomic on the internet Math with Bad Drawings: also a great webcomic, always cracks me up
also if you use LaTeX and you don’t know about it, Detexify is a lifesaver
