Beela's book is my main project, so I guess I'll do this about them

What uncommon/common fear do they have?

Beela's got all the classic abandonment fears and high anxiety in general.

Do they have any pet peeves?

I feel like they have a lot. They hate being pestered to eat, but that's the only way they'll get enough in their system. They hate being talked over as well.

What are 3 items you can find in their bedroom?

Does three books count? Seems like cheating, so I'll go for "a stack of books" instead. As well as their cat (he likes to hang out with them. He's an orange boy named Bernie because I wrote this when Bernie Sanders ran for president). Third item is a stack of blankets. I feel like Beela's the type to say they don't need a weighted blanket and that's because they just layer far too many on their bed instead.

What do they notice first in a person?

How friendly they look. Beela's always scared people will be horrible to them, so they like to figure out who's the most likely to pick on them first.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is their pain tolerance?

On the high side of average, since they've gotten pretty good at just...ignoring when they're upset or in pain. Maybe a 6?

Do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure?

Beela freezes. They just go completely stock still. This is not a good response for them.

Do they come from a big family/are they a family person?

Only child and doesn't get on with their parents. Had a big fight about their friends on thanksgiving, stormed out with the ultimatum that their parents had to reach out when they understood why Beela was upset. Parents haven't called. It's been a few years now.

What animal represents them best?

If you asked them, they'd say a mouse or something else small, defenseless and considered a pest.

What is a smell that they dislike?

Oooh, this one's hard. Probably things that remind them of their parents. Though I feel like they'll have a few by the end of this series. Maybe something to do with the world they spent the most time on? The 8 foot long centipedes that blackmailed them into help? The woods their friend almost died in?

Have they broken any bones?

Not yet :)

How would a stranger likely describe them?

Shy, withdrawn, anxious (as they claim they hide their anxiety well)

Are they a night owl or a morning bird?

Night owl, but on accident

What is a flavor they hate and a flavor they love?

I know I gave them a favorite ice cream flavor, but I have no idea where or what it was. They hate most foods because, well, I was having a real hard time eating when I designed them

Do they have any hobbies?

Beela's a big reader. It's her main hobby, though they really should pick up something else as well

Boom, surprise birthday party! How do they react to surprises?

Depends a lot on context. Their close friends surprise them with something low-key? Good response. A loud surprise with people they only kinda know? Well, their magic lets them teleport, so they'd be gone very fast. Especially considering it happens on accident when they get startled.

Do they like to wear jewelry?

Not at all

Do they have neat or messy handwriting?

Neat, ish. It's legible, but not pretty by any means

What are the two emotions they feel the most?

Honestly, Beela's not in a good place at any point. They don't get happy emotions very often. Most of the time, they're either depressed, anxious or both. The kid needs some anti-anxieties and some anti-depressants, like, yesterday

Do they have a favorite fabric?

Something soft. I'd like to say natural fibers, but I doubt they pay that much attention to what they wear, so it's probably just "well this isn't the worst thing I've ever seen" when they pick things

What kind of accent do they have?

They're from Maryland, so I assume they have a fairly neutral accent most of the time

Thursday Ask-A-Thon time for @ask-a-thon : How are you, how are things going and you say you can't stop thinking of Beela, so would you like to talk about that wip? What captures you the most? Characters? The plot?

Beela my beloved!

Beela has been a journey for me, honestly. I started writing it for Nanowrimo 2016 because "well, it won't be that hard now will it". I had a character--Beela, 22, introvert, ace--and a premise--go to other worlds to collect things--and it has since bloomed into something much bigger.

This turned out a lot longer than I was expecting, so I added a read more.

I finished the "book" 13 months later at 320k words exactly. Don't worry, it's getting split into three books, maybe four because the worldbuilding I did in 2016 leaves a lot to be desired.

For a long time I hated Beela-the-character because they were all of my negative traits turned up to 11. People loved them anyway and I was baffled. Turns out, Beela-the-character isn't irredeemable, they're just depressed and autistic like I was. The plot may be about going to different worlds, but they actually learn that it's okay to be sad and you can still have friends, which is what I desperately needed to know at the time.

My main group is Beela, still 22, still introverted, but found the courage in book two to come out as enby. They have the power to move people between worlds, a feat called blitzing. Nona is their best friend (though at the current re-write spot, she did just make a huge mistake), a sweet, bubbly girl. She can feel and manipulate emotion. Maisie...oh Maisie. Maisie is 6' of anger management problems and I love her so much. She definitely got suspended in school for starting fights and she's the only one of my humans who's actually going to college. Her power is strength; she can use magic to make herself very strong, usually when she's upset. Santo is a soft boy, the youngest but also the most knowledgeable about magic. Vadeen is my "tough guy". On Earth he's got a motorcycle and a wisecrack, but he's pretty out of his league now that they're not on Earth anymore. His power is catching on fire when he gets mad. Last is Ellis. Honestly, I kinda hate him because he represents every generic guy that my friends have ignored me for. He doesn't get a power, though he can still use magic.

I also have extensive...aus? It feels kinda weird to say I have an au of my own work, but I have a lot of stuff I've written out about them that's not related to the plot at all. I mean, like, 70k of Santo/Vadeen cute stuff, 15k of Santo/Vadeen having a terrible breakup, 25k of the group living together after the events of the story and even a few dozen words of Maisie getting a very sweet boyfriend named Dominic.

As for what captivates me, I'm going to go with characters. The plot is just an excuse to play with characters. I like to put my guys in a Situation(tm).

Beela: when Beela's best friend Nona insists they mess around with her so called magic book, Beela’s the only one of their group of six to protest. After all, magic isn’t real. Then the end up on a different world, despite to get home, with an impossible task at their feet.

Wysteria: Wysteria is a witch who lives in Downtown Olympia with her familiar, a turtle named Pants. Her day to day involves pulling him out from places he doesn't belong and running her mysticism shop. (This one was hard. It's slice of life queer joy)

Riix: smugglers and pirates Riix and Clementine don't get along great. It's Riix's fault with their firecracker temper and prickly personality. When they both get stolen off their ship in the midst of a battle, they're forced to work together to get back (not sure how to work it into the elevator pitch that Clementine is trans and Riix is enby)

Architect: They wake up in the dark with no memory of their past, no idea how they got here and no clue who they are. The only way out is though a nonsensical labyrinth full of doors that shouldn't work

Bela comes to the Jamini. Jamini says so angry, after coming, I’m attacking me. She says that you should know about auspicious beginning. Bela says that I will not harm you the Wish. Jamini says that I am marrying her, a witch is marrying a nagin. She laughs and says that people are getting modern in our world. She tells him that if Wish marries him, he will lose all his powers and then you will also lose your problem. Bela is angry. The grandmother asks if she wants to fight and says that fight today. He shows his hand Bella removes his poisonous tongue. Sumitra comes along with Shekhar’s wife. Jamini says that Bela was giving her tips on keeping her husband happy. Bela tells them that she will bring Jamini. Sumitra and Mukti go Bela tells her to come. Jamini says that she is very excited to go. Bella feels somebody

Following me, Jamini asked, do you accept your defeat? Bela tells her to see and says that you will push your head. She takes her to the pavilion. Desire is sitting in the pavilion The master asks if he wants to run away. Rehan says no, no. The salvation tells them to come soon. Jamini says that marriage is a barbadi and it is said to start reverse counting. The South Rehan disturbs. Mukti thinks why Jamini is trapped on the way. The liberation calls them and sees Dupta. They become worried. Sumitra asked the lady to check that where they are. Bella takes out a house from the house as a nagin. He threw it on the ground. Jamini falls. Bela asks him to get up and says that Vish is my friend, not my maid. He said that I told you to go, but you did not agree. Now see what I can do, I have to kill you. The grandmother laughs and says that what you think is that you have lost me. She tells you what you think that you brought me here and says that I brought you here so that I can face you alone. Kuhu asks him to rest Pulomi says that Andy is right and asks Panditji to read the purification mantra for the house. Bela assumed that Jamini had accepted Bela. In the Jamini cave, the temple takes Bella. She asks Bella to get up. Bela receives consciousness and listens to her.

Mahry says that Bella’s phone is not connecting. Pulomi tells that they can be in pillars. Andy asked him not to speak like uneducated. Shekhar asked ACP for doing something. Rahaana / Wish thinks that he will be saved and saved. Mahry says to Sumitra that he has to go and find Bella. Wish comes to the temple and prays for Bela. She tells God that where Bela is. I did not hear your screaming but only you were unconscious listening to it. Gemini is shocked. Bela says that the snake has not heard any noise, they feel movement. He said that you worked according to me. That sword falls Jamini says that you are like me and ask where your rules are now. Bela says that I am not greedy with power, and can not do anything wrong. Jamini says that you came here to take revenge but were dying for the fatal attraction of the killer. She says that you love your heart and love for human beings. You have lost it, Bela says that it is not so.

Jamini says that you forgot your revenge due to Mahar. Bela asked her not to take the name of the woman. The Gemini asks that when you hit Rehan, why can not you kill the woman? She says that you take care of Mahri and say that I saw that Mahar was jealous when Rehan was running behind you. Bela tells her to keep quiet. On the tail of Jamini sword and Bela takes attack. Bella screams. Wish alert Beela is in danger and prays for him. She looks at Bela in the cave with Jamini.

Mahir comes in the temple. Desire hides by looking at it. Mahir called the Kahu and said that Bela is not here. He tells God to protect Bella until he reaches there. Wish listens to him and he prays. Bela killed Jamini and said that you do not know the serpent. Jamini says that I do not need a sword to kill you, and says that my nails are enough. She tries to tamper with her nails on Bella’s body, Bella holds her hand and quarrels with her.

She is on the way and thinks that maybe Bela went to the cave and maybe even Rehan. She thinks she will not let anything happen to her. Bella laid a bail bond with her tail and hit it. She says that I will take my revenge one day, but you will never get embezzlement. Jamini says that I will not leave you. She falls into the pit pit and goes inside. Wish comes there and asks Bella that she is fine. Thank God for protecting Nagrani. The woman arrives and calls Bela. Wish becomes Rehana and Bella come in the incarnation of a wife. The master asks what happened and where is the Jamini? Bela saw the hand of Jamini. Jamini completely drowned. Rahan tells Bella that they will tell him everything. He tells that Jamini was a woman and was running from jewelery. She shows jewelry bags. Bela doubted her and told me also. He followed her. Bela says that she saw him removed from the window and followed him. Mahin asks why did not you call me? Bela says that I tried your number, but … she says that she tells Rehan again.

Rahane tells Mahar to know that you are stressed because of us and say that there is nothing between us, we are just friends and say that we were talking to him because I wanted to know about Jamini from him . The master asks, ‘Where is Jamini?’ Bela says she has run away. He says that why did not you tell me and said that his gang was here. Rehan says what he would have said, and he says that Anu and my father hate him and believe him wrong. He says that I am doing this and need to break. I had enough and wanted to leave this country. Bela says that I’m glad you are not in danger. Rehan says that I am also happy and ask him to be safe. Mahi Sumitra receives the call and she tells her that Bela and Rehan are safe. Mahila Concerns for Bella. Man of mind … .song plays. He says that he was getting bad ideas as if he lost it. Bela remembered Jamini’s words and said she wants to go home.

The addicts jumps from the drawer and falls to the ground. Sumitra says that Jamini is a thug and says that I do not believe. Pulomi says that my left eyes were blinding him. Andy says that you have made garlands for him. He says that he is happy because the jewelry has been saved. Sumitra says that our real jewel is safe and talks about Bella. She asks him not to risk his life and say that they all know that he loves them. He prays for his pair. Pulomi prayed for a pair of first and Sahani. Sumitra says that I have decided to leave this house. Andy asks what she tries to talk about. Pallomi embraces Sumitra and says that you have taken the right decision and asked to remove the car from Andy. Sumitra asked her to go to her house and said she is going to her mother’s house with her family. Andy explains that there is nothing inauspicious about the house. Pulomi says that Andy had gone to the police station here. Vyar says okay, we will go to Nani’s house and we will assure Andy. Sumitra hugged her and said that you are the best son. Bela thinks and looks at the words of Jamini.

AU ACP comes in the house. The ACP asks if Bella has been kidnapped. Anu says that I did not go to Rehan’s wedding and say that he was very humiliated in the house. She tells him to take Ravi. The ACP tells her to go and says she is closed today. He says that all officers went to find him. Anu asked them to trust and once they started meeting Ravi. ACP says okay. Rehan / Wish called for liberation and said that he is going to New York and will not be in contact with anyone, and Dad asks to understand. Wish comes in his incarnation and says that this story has ended. Someone / maybe Arvind comes and does not say so far. The desire seems shocking

In Beela, we don't get any holidays the kids know about. Mostly because they're traveling a lot and aren't on Earth. They do get a festival on one world about community and a celebration on another world after an election, but that's about it

I mostly write on my laptop on my couch. But I sit sideways on it for some reason. Also it's close to the charger for when I invariably need it. I can write in other spots, though. Particularly like the library. Bars are okay some times.

Very much not a planner. I hope for the best, then whine when that doesn't work out. This method works for me because I don't have a strong enough grasp of the characters to know what they're gonna do more than a few chapters out. I've gotten a lot better about actually describing things, so I'm going to pick that as my favorite part of my style right now, but I've been told I'm good at character interactions, so that's also pretty cool. And way more fun for me to write

The world got to see your story and oops video essayist discovered it. What type of essay are they making? Is it a deep dive? Is it a rant about “controversial” parts? Is it about how the story got popular? Taking apart every single sentence? What are they focusing on?

Hello Feather! I am also attempting to become more active in the community. What a great match!

I think the video essay would depend on what type of person found it and which book.

Riix's book would be prime target for someone who hates queer people existing in the past. They're non binary and a smuggler/pirate. The other main character is a trans woman. Riix did kill someone for misgendering the two of them. Then the magic comes in.

Xie is the Architect and You Are Nothing could be a "taking apart every sentence" video because the wording does get a touch esoteric at times. It's also a bit of a trans narrative, but that was accidental.

Beela's book would be fun to deep dive in because they can go to so many different worlds and I try to make them all unique. I do have a few queer characters in that one too (Beela is ace and enby, Nona is bi, Santo is gay) and some queernorm worlds they visit. It could also be victim to a rant about queerness, because, well, there's a whole world with no names and only they/them pronouns and a certain group would hate that. They can get rekt.

Wysteria and Pants is hardest for me to decide on a type of video. It's mostly a cute lil slice of life about queer joy. Maybe a review would be best? I don't think there's enough meat to get a deep dive.

Recently I've been working on a very tense section of my main book (tentatively just called Beela) where 1) character A comes out as enby to their bestie 2) Side character gets killed thanks to plot the group's decisions 3) Character A comes out as enby to a second person, gaining confidence 4) Bestie gets caught using magic to preform emotional manipulation.

I love writing big, dramatic angst, so I'm having a blast right now. They're miserable, but I'm really enjoying myself.

I'm not sure what my favorite of all time project is. Probably a toss up between Xie is the Architect and You are Nothing and Wysteria and Pants. Architect was a horror book that started out about being abducted by the fae and having to find your way out of a maze. It ended up being about what your identity is when no one is looking. Came out very trans and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Wysteria was about queer joy, specifically, about being ace and not being the best all the time. Having someone who was peppy and energetic and a bit of a ditz was really fun.

Jamini says that I am marrying her, a witch is marrying a nagin. She laughs and says that people are getting modern in our world. She tells him that if Wish marries him, he will lose all his powers and then you will also lose your problem. Bela is angry. The grandmother asks if she wants to fight and says that fight today. He shows his hand Bella removes his poisonous tongue. Sumitra comes along with Shekhar’s wife. Jamini says that Bela was giving her tips on keeping her husband happy. Bela tells them that she will bring Jamini. Sumitra and Mukti go Bela tells her to come. Jamini says that she is very excited to go. Bella feels somebody

Jamini says that you forgot your revenge due to Mahar. Bela asked her not to take the name of the woman. The Gemini asks that when you hit Rehan, why can not you kill the woman? She says that you take care of Mahri and say that I saw that Mahar was jealous when Rehan was running behind you. Bela tells her to keep quiet. On the tail of Jamini sword and Bela takes attack. Bella screams. Wish alert Beela is in danger and prays for him. She looks at Bela in the cave with Jamini.

Mahir comes in the temple. Desire hides by looking at it. Mahir called the Kahu and said that Bela is not here. He tells God to protect Bella until he reaches there. Wish listens to him and he prays. Hey everyone, thought I'd do a little about me and my work!

I'm Merriweather, non binary (fae/ faer or they/ them please) and live in the untied states with my cats. I'm not published yet, but I've gotten some very kind rejections on my werid books.

Beela is my main book, featuring a main character who realizes they're non binary halfway through the series. It's a portal fantasy that spends most of its time on not-earth. Nona is the "sweet one" and Beela's best friend. Ellis is her boyfriend. Santo is the one who taught them how to use magic. Vadeen is the "tough one", but he's sweet, I promise. Maisie, though, will pick a fight for fun. I'll be tagging this one "Beela baby"

Wysteria and Pants follows a witch who's only barely skilled enough to be called that named Wysteria and her familiar, a turtle named Pants. Other notable characters are Priscilla, her fae. best friend, and Ariel, her soon-to-be boyfriend. There is one reoccurring cis-het character in this entire novel and one of the main themes is queer joy, specifically that of aces. I'm adding a few more chapters to this one, then I'm going to try querying it again. It'll be tagged "Wysteria and Pants"

Xie is the Architect and You are Nothing is one I had a lot of fun writing. The MC doesn't remember who they are or how they got where they are. They wake up to a dark room and a sense of panic. One of the fae, a being called the Architect, stole them and put them in a maze. They want to get out, but xie wants them to stay as xyr pet. This one is surrealist horror fantasty but still very queer. I'm on final edits for sending this one out for queries too. Got a few nice rejections, which is more than expected for "overwrought prose about trans identity" to land me, honestly. It's tagged "xie is the architect and you are nothing"

Lastly, I have the project I've been calling "trans pirates" because that is the premise I started with. The piracy is significantly lower than I expected, but it's still been a fun one. Any story that has a character with bad impulse control is fun to write. Riix is enby and kills someone on page for misgendering them. Clementine just wants to learn nice, feminine crafts like knitting and sewing, but she ended up on a smuggler's ship, so there's not a lot of time for that. They're captured by--and escape from--a pirate known as Ambrose Baker and spend quite a lot of time trying to get back to their ship. I'll probably tag this one with "Riix" because I had used "trans pirates" before and it didn't feel like a tag I'd use exclusively for the story

Finch: Name a song you associate with this book/WIP, and tell us why.

Oooh, this one's hard. I don't have too many for this one. Hand Me Down by the Wallflowers for Beela, since it has lines like "it's better when you're not around" and that is completely and utterly how they feel.

For Wysteria I need to stretch a bit further to Almost (Sweet Music) by Hozier. I took a lyric out of context (be still my foolish heart, don't ruin this on me) and applied it to Ariel and how he feels about being aroace. The song isn't that at all, but oh well

Shrike: What is the overall theme of your book/WIP? Why did you want to write about it?

The reason I wrote Beela was to prove to myself you could be depressed and have friends. When I started writing it, that felt impossible. It's an honest look at what (my type of depression) feels like, even though it's a portal fantasy. As I've written more, I've decided to have Beela come out as non-binary as well. While I do think it fits for them to do this, I can't help but feel that, as a character choice, it says a lot. This is someone who routinely hides or lies about being upset because it would cause someone to like them less. So asking for something? Asking for something big and scary like that? It proves that even if they're anxious, they can trust their group.

For Wysteria, it was much more a moment of "you know what? Being ace doesn't need to mean I'm sad about it" so I wrote a character who was out and proud and loved and happy. She would never be criticized for her orientation and it would always be queer enough. It was also important that Wysteria isn't very smart. She's not a fool, but she didn't excel in school and she is unlikely to be the smartest person in the room. And that's okay. I wanted to show that you don't need to be the best possible version for it to be permissible, you just needed to try

Anyway, Beela's very good at blitzing, a spell that teleports. It's a big, heavy spell that most of their group can't do. In fact, it's one of two pieces of magic Beela can do. The other is making it so they can read any language. They can't speak it or write it themself, but they can read.
