1. These high-tech windows fight climate change – and will save you money
“[“Vacuum-insulated glass”] insulates five times better than double-paned glass. The Enthermal product line holds energy about as well as fiberglass wall insulation[…. T]he energy bill savings offset the upfront cost of the upgrade in two to seven years, depending on the building[….]”
2. Doulas test ways to curb Memphis’ Black maternal, infant deaths
“Research shows they are key to better health outcomes. […] Free of charge, [parents enrolled in this pilot program], in addition to being paired with a doula, get access to free yoga classes, diapers, breastfeeding starter kits, nutritious food and other tangible help that can measurably boost well-being.”
3. Scientists find feeding grazing cattle seaweed cuts methane emissions by almost 40%
“This is the first study to test seaweed on grazing beef cattle in the world. […] Most research to reduce methane emissions using feed additives has taken place in controlled environments with daily supplements. But Kebreab noted in the study that fewer than half of those methods are effective for grazing cattle.”
4. Success for local residents as Florida council toppled over sewage plant plan
“A citizens’ revolt in a small Florida city ousted an entire slate of councilors who were pushing for a new sewage plant to be built close to one of the state’s most pristine and treasured rivers.”
5. Beaver survey aims to show the urban benefits of Chicago's 'ecosystem engineers'
“Urban Rivers is installing [“artificial floating gardens”] along the river to restore native wetland habitats, which provide food and shelter for wildlife, as well as natural spaces for humans.”
6. The future of plastic: Biodegradable, durable, and even edible
“[… T]he composite plastic proved not only sturdy but also more malleable than its core component, hydroxyethyl cellulose. Additionally, since both cellulose and tyrosine are edible, the biodegradable composite plastic can technically be consumed.”
7. Limestone quarries could be vital for wild bee conservation
“Quarries provide valuable habitats for wild bees and other animals and plants that occur on the now rare calcareous grasslands," explains lead author Dr. Felix Kirsch[….]”
8. New England wedding vendors offer help to same-sex couples before Trump inauguration
“Marriage equality isn’t immediately at risk. Trump has said he considers it settled law, but of course it’s hard to take him at his word […] so vendors in the region are offering free or discounted services to queer couples and noncitizens in a rush to marry.”
9. The indigenous women saving India's endangered giant yams
“Since their formation in 2022, the 10 members of the Noorang group have planted and brought back to the community 180 varieties of wild tubers[….] The project is part of [… a] farming initiative to eradicate poverty, provide agricultural training and empower women in vulnerable tribal communities.”
10. The US is making and deploying more solar panels than ever before
“[… D]omestic solar module manufacturing capacity has nearly quintupled since 2022[….] Solar is the cheapest source of new power generation by far, and it’s an increasingly large employer in the U.S., particularly in Republican-led states.”

Time Travel Question 53: Medievalish and Earlier
These Questions are the result of suggestions a the previous iteration. This category may include suggestions made too late to fall into the correct earlier time grouping. In some cases a culture lasted a really long time and I grouped them by whether it was likely the later or earlier grouping made the most sense with the information I had.
Please add new suggestions below if you have them for future consideration. All cultures and time periods welcome.

T’Rahni’hk!!!!!!! *leaning in to give T'Rahni'hk a little kiss on the forehead but her aura of bad luck causes us both to fall into a sudden crack in the ground which is actually a portal to the underworld. Nether of us have a coin for Charon and so we spend a hundred years wandering the banks of the river styx. We are finally allowed to cross the river but as we are stepping onto the boat, I catch my foot on the edge of the boat and fall in and when she tries to catch me from falling she also falls in and we become plagued by our woes but she somehow gets the curse of Achilles and her “Achilles heel” (or so to speak) becomes the inside of her cheek and so when she bites the inside of her cheek out of anxiety she turns into dust*
They didn't train T'Keia for these kinds of shenanigans!!
#Q&A#tuvok-enjoyer#finally got a chance to draw T'Keia even as just a lil sketch [tuvok-enjoyer's oc - go check her out!]#bee doodles#You & T'Rahni'hk wait 100 years to get across the river and the conversation never becomes un-awkward. Such is her power v_v#but you're still devastated by her death since you've known each other for 100 years. SAD!#<- This is not even the B Plot of an episode it's just something mentioned offhandedly by T'Keia#Luckily T'Rahni'hk is unkillable and so she shall return next episode like nothing happened. Thanks space medicine!!

Medicine: Baby and the Bees
Thank you @sevi-fuk for giving me the idea! Hopefully, I can do it justice here!
Yang: (sprinting through the back fields of the house) You'll never take me alive!!!
Tian: (giving chase) Get back here, Dagon! You need to take your arthritis medication!
Yin: (taking up the rear) And your blood pressure meds!
Keir: (sprinting around tryng to flank Yang) The doctor even made it easy on you by making it into a single syrup cocktail that you only have to take once a month! Come on!
Yang: NEVER!!!
Tian: (panting) How the hell is she in her fifties but still so fast?
Yin: I have no idea, but there has to be an easier way to do this...
Keir: GUYS!!! I GOT HER!!!
Tian & Yin: (sprint up to where Keir is struggling to hold Yang down)
Yang: Betrayed by my own son!!!
Tian: Good job, Keir! (passes medicine filled syringe to Yin and pins down Yang's other arm) How did you catch her?
Keir: I pretended to sprain my ankle in a rabbit hole.
Yang: Traitor! Those rabbit holes are no joke!
Yin: (straddles Yang's chest and uses her knees to help hold down Yang's shoulders) This is for your own good, Dagon! We want you to be healthy so you can live a long, happy life!
Yang: (bucking like a bull as she pins her lips shut and bites the insides closed while thrashing her head back and forth)
Tian: (struggling to hold Yang down) Oh, hey, look! Mama's home!
Yang: (cranes head towards the house) Hey, Ba- ack!
Yin: (pinches Yang's nose closed and stuffs the syringe of medicine in her mouth, pressing down the plunger and laying on Yang's face to force her to swallow)
Yang: (thrashes and starts rolling around like a crocodile doing a death roll) mmmMMMMmmMMMmMMm!!!!!!
-At the Dinner Table-
Blake: (glances around the table) Soooo...how was everyone's day?
Yang: (pouting with her arms crossed and barely picking at her food)
TYK: (covered in dirt and grass stains) Dagon's angy.
Blake: I see that. Why is Yangy angy?
TYK: Medicine....
Yang: (huffs and turns away from the table) Betrayed by my own children.

Before anything else, I am a writer.
I would also call myself a singer. Or a textile artist, maybe. I could be a sibling, or a friend, or a student, or a baker, or a gardener, or a cook. There is an incredible number of labels you could put on me that would fit.
When I was a kid, I would deny so vehemently that I ever wanted to be a writer. I used to read like it was breathing, and when my relatives would interrupt me in the middle of a story to ask if I'd ever want to author one myself, I would tell them that reading and writing were two different things, thank you very much, and just because I was a reader didn't mean I was a writer.
But, through that love for reading, I ended up figuring out what the phrase "Stockholm Syndrome" meant much younger than you might expect. Think eight or nine, after reading the "Series of Unfortunate Events." Which, if you didn't know, is a notably bad place to garner vocabulary. Lemony Snicket is in the habit of explaining words in a context entirely different from what they actually mean. Still, I have a vivid memory of sitting in a corner of the living room on Thanksgiving as a nine-year-old (reading, naturally), and hearing my sister's boyfriend ask my mom for clarification on the concept of Stockholm Syndrome. I looked up from my book and told him what it was -- much to the chagrin of my parents, who were wondering where I'd learned it.
It's ironic that it was a book that introduced me to the concept of Stockholm Syndrome, and that it was one of the few phrases that Lemony Snicket ever explained correctly. I doubt you're unfamiliar with it, but it means to be trapped or held captive by something, and to grow to love it anyway.
When I think about it now, I realize that it was inevitable that I learned to love to write. I also hated learning how to read, but my dad taught me before I even started kindergarten, and I loved knowing I was better at it than the other kids. It was my way of setting myself apart. I drank so desperately from the books I read that I couldn't help but fill myself with words.
And then, just as inevitably, they had nowhere to go.
That was the first part of my own experience with Stockholm Syndrome. I was folded into myself like origami, with so much to say and no space for it. Every word I'd ever read was crammed into my lungs, and I didn't know what to do with them. It wasn't until I found other people's writing (like Broadway shows I loved, intersectional queer lit, characters that looked and felt and breathed like me, etc.) that I ever wanted to make my own.
I didn't start writing until I was 13. I found my first inspiration -- and what it was, I'll never tell because lord, is it embarrassing -- and I made something out of it. It felt like reaching down into my chest and taking hold of something I barely knew was there and turning myself out onto the page, but in a different font. Whether that be Times New Roman or the chicken scratch I had going in 4 different notebooks simultaneously, there was always something to say. I could never get away from it. And, as the Stockholm Syndrome mention might suggest, I grew to love it.
There is a part of me now that is inextricable from my writing. I put words together to get feelings out, in a way that is both authentic to myself and more beautiful than anything I have ever been. I put words together to process what I've been through. I put words together to write lives that I've never lived, and I grow vicariously through them. I know that love exists because I write it into existence. I am all that I need to be through the words I put down.
At the end of the day, yes. I am fully and completely bound to my writing. I am trapped in a way that I will never experience elsewhere. I would be nothing without it.
But fuck, I love it.
#my writing#that definition definitely isn't what Stockholm Syndrome actually means#nor is it really in the spirit of Stockholm Syndrome#but give me my creative license this is a post about being a writer okay#I'm gonna embellish some shit#this is what it means to be a writer#to me#writer#author#original writing#stream of consciousness#my love for writing#lemony snicket#RAISED me#I read all of those books#series of unfortunate events#absolutely ate with those#I read chasing redbird#Charlie and the chocolate factory#the witches#matilda#george's marvelous medicine#the outsiders#I did a book report on#life of pi#in fifth grade#(and understood the book)#would love to know what Mrs. Grimmer thought of that#the secret life of bees#absolutely fucking gas book

Would you all like to hear about the things I found that I now kinda can’t work on bc no laptop?
Notes!!
- [REDACTED] aka House’s illness on the casefic coming up next on HH:Reprise
- House’s disability research (including information on diabetic infarction, a visual exploration of House’s possibly-affected muscle groups, and an article on limb-saving surgery and the impairments people experienced following it)
- Huntington’s research for Thirteen’s disease progression possibilities (pending: whether her symptoms in the clinical trial officially count for symptom onset)
- Falls from heights (no I’m not doing a Reichenbach thing but I’m always curious. It’s also a fun way to demonstrate how I sometimes use medical studies for randomization and probability in my writing)
- Wilson thymoma research; aka thymoma growth rate and treatment. Featuring bad math as well as bad medicine.
- And lots and LOTS of notes on HH:Reprise
- Unrelated, an entire folder of notes on my current novel, which is on the back burner atm bc it needs a full rewrite.
#notes notes notes#finding them JUST as I have no laptop makes me want to cry#bee does medicine badly#fanfic writer blues

hi, i saw your post on tips and rules that you've learned with anxiety and it was extremely helpful, but i was wondering, have you ever been anxious in public? like feeling anxious and getting overwhelming racing thoughts? not in a social anxiety kind of way, just anxious about things you normally worry about coming randomly to you in public, and if so how do you deal with that? (you don't have to answer ofc)
Two interpretations of this; hopefully one of them is helpful for you.
First interpretation: if you mean you start to have an anxiety spiral and you don't have the privacy you normally use to calm down? Yeah, I've had that.
If you can, get headphones and listen to music. Any music works, but I'm a worldbuilder, so putting on something that lines up with a project I'm working on gets me thinking of that project instead of the current spiral.
If you can't use that, and you can't find a way to get privacy, you have to do a little detective work. WHAT is making you anxious? Are you worried about something someone said, and it's spiraling into a crisis of "everyone hates me"? Did you leave something on at home, and now you're going through worst case scenarios? Is there something important coming up, and you can't stop thinking about it? It can be anything, but those are the ones that plague me most.
Step one: Figure out the source of it.
Step two: Once you know what it is, envision two things: The absolute worst that can happen, and the absolute best that can happen. Not just the end result: walk yourself through getting to that point.
Step three: Dismiss both of those, because they're both incredibly unlikely. The most likely thing to happen is something in the middle.
Step four: Focus on that middle outcome and treat it like it's inevitable. How are you going to deal with it when it shows up? The more you think about solutions to that, the more the worst case scenario is going to fade into the background.
It takes a lot of practice.
If, on the other hand, you mean that your thoughts are so fast and that it's making your head spin and your heart race and your stomach feel sick, then distraction is KEY.
Start bringing headphones everywhere and find something on Youtube to listen to. Pick a project that encompasses a lot of thought processes and focus on what you want from it (as I said, I worldbuild, so I'll start thinking of planetary formation or monster classifications). Start counting your steps as you walk from place to place, or the tiles on the ceiling if you can't move.
Neither of these are going to 100% work on the first try. It takes conscious decision to do them, and to stop thinking about the source of your anxiety in the first place. But if you chip away at it and tell yourself that the thing you're worried about isn't that bad, then very slowly, you'll start to believe it.
#you've gotta think of coping mechanisms like medicine#first pill isn't going to get rid of your fever#you've gotta be consistent with it until it's all gone (ie: thinking about coping mechanism only serves to go through the motions)#or else you aren't going to get permanent progress#and some people have better immune systems than others so sometimes it takes less effort#you get what i'm saying?#ask bee#anxiety
