Yuletide Recs, Batch Three
16 recs for The Eagle, Earthsea, Emma., The Expanse, The Faculty, The Fall of the House of Usher, Fallen London, The Green Knight, The Handmaiden, Jane Eyre, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and The Matrix
Between Two Rivers, Marcus Flavius Aquila & Esca Mac Cunoval
Two rivers. Two near kisses.
The White Ladies of the Ring, Penthe/Tenar
There was a sorcerer imprisoned in the Labyrinth, and Arha had told Kossil that she would kill him—but she did not want to. Perhaps she needed to ask someone for help...
My Queen Bee, George Knightley/Emma Woodhouse
Emma went on, brightly, “I have spoken with Harriet about it.” George blinked. He was fast losing his grip on this conversation.
We aren't righteous (or: five times Amos did as Naomi asked, and one time he didn't.), Gen, Amos Burton & Naomi Nagata
For EdosianOrchids901 for Yuletide, who asked for Amos and Naomi and suggested something pre-canon, something about that dynamic where he sees her as an external moral compass, and how their friendship developed. This is mostly pre-canon, overlapping with canon in the last two parts. (Also it's been a while since I've seen this so apologies in advance if I've missed something in research and inadvertently contradicted canon on their immediate pre-canon backstories!)
Pyriscence, Gen, Amos Burton & Praxidike Meng
After the war with the Free Navy, Amos comes to see Prax.
What do you do when you survive a shape-shifting mind-controlling alien as a teen?, Stokely Mitchell/Stan Rosado
Twenty years later, Stokely and Stan arrive back in each other's lives.
the miraculous lustre of her eye, Madeline Usher/Verna
"If she wants Madeline fucking Usher, she's going to have to look me straight in the eyes."
a wild weird clime that lieth, sublime, Gen, Verna + Arthur Pym
Arthur Pym's first meeting with Verna.
The Margin, Gen, Verna + Arthur Pym
“We have to go back,” Arthur Pym said, teeth rattling in the wind. He clutched the ragged edges of his coat closer. “Ship can’t break through that ice. We’ll founder.” -- The first time Verna and Arthur met, on the Transglobe Expedition.
by such dreaming high, Gen, The Duchess + The Roseate Queen
It is summer, in a fallen city; and someone, somewhere, is doing something unwise...
The Half-Seen Door, Gen, Piranesi | Matthew Rose Sorensen + Sixteen | Sarah Raphael + Gawain
It’s a hard job, coming home.
leverage and its utility, Fujiwara + Original Female Character(s)
The three he smoked in the carriage ride here was nothing but a gamble. A roll of the die, a flip of a coin, a dealing of cards. Lucky for him, luck is in his favor.
lilacs out of the dead land, Jane Eyre/Edward Rochester
I had, within me, that rich world of imagination that I could always retreat to, and so I transformed myself.
All Earthly Happiness, Jane Eyre/Edward Rochester
Reader, I lied. Or, rather, I omitted. As the mother of daughters, who had openly declared their intentions of reading my autobiography, I was hesitant to paint a full picture of the course of my first engagement to my dear Edward. Although in many ways it did progress much as I described, discretion prevented absolute disclosure
When It's Worth It, Gen, Arthur + The Mage
The chilly air tasted of dust and lightning strikes and the faint iron tang of blood, and there were still all too many questions lingering unanswered.
dissolved girl, Neo/Trinity
What if Trinity came back wrong? A post-Matrix Resurrections fic about what happens if the body was rebuilt again, and again, and again, and in the remaking, became something new.

A Happy Ending or An Unreliable Narrator?
Was the ending truly a happy one--or is Jane lying to us?
Let's take a look: Jane Eyre ("I am no bird no net ensnares me") married her much older former master, who, due to his limited use of limbs and visual impairment, requires care. We know there's no hired carer, because Jane explicitly says she was the one who looked after him (hence why she had to send Adele to school) and also, as I noted in my recap post, it's not likely they'd be able to hire anyone. They've got no room for a live-in staff and a live-out one won't be able to make their daily way to Ferndean, which is located away from habitable civilisation.
Ferndean Manor, we are told, is not in a good state. We are told that Rochester didn't move Bertha there because the damp walls would eventually result in her death. This is the house where the Rochesters now live. Jane, however, tells us nothing about any repairs being done. Neither does she mention any decorating, purchasing furniture, wallpaper, carpets, curtains, pictures on the walls--zilch. She got a lot of pleasure out of cleaning Moor House in time for Christmas (shortly after she discovered she and the Riverses were cousins). Just look at this:
“My first aim will be to clean down (do you comprehend the full force of the expression?)—to clean down Moor House from chamber to cellar; my next to rub it up with bees-wax, oil, and an indefinite number of cloths, till it glitters again; my third, to arrange every chair, table, bed, carpet, with mathematical precision; afterwards I shall go near to ruin you in coals and peat to keep up good fires in every room; and lastly, the two days preceding that on which your sisters are expected will be devoted by Hannah and me to such a beating of eggs, sorting of currants, grating of spices, compounding of Christmas cakes, chopping up of materials for mince-pies, and solemnising of other culinary rites, as words can convey but an inadequate notion of to the uninitiated like you. My purpose, in short, is to have all things in an absolutely perfect state of readiness for Diana and Mary before next Thursday; and my ambition is to give them a beau-ideal of a welcome when they come.”
This one paragraph contains more home cosiness than the entire last chapter. The "I have now been married ten years" paragraph may be very poetic, but it tells us nothing. She was his eyes, then he regained some sight, so he can pretty much move about by himself. She says they visit Diana and Mary, but that's all. Nothing else about how they spend their time, the long summer days or the long winter nights.
And then, that "when his first-born was put into his arms" line. Even Katniss Everdeen isn't this cold about her kids, and she didn't want any. She only had them because Peeta talked her into it. There's nothing in the book that would indicate whether Jane wanted children, but neither is there anything that would indicate she didn't want them. Presumably she did, married life would have meant kids (unless, idk, they lived sexlessly, or there was birth control). She only mentions how Rochester felt about the kid ("On that occasion, he again, with a full heart, acknowledged that God had tempered judgment with mercy."), not her. It's baffling.
Lastly, the final words are dedicated to St John. Why? She receives his letter from India, in which he tells her he feels death coming. She gets tears in her eyes. Does she wish she married him instead?
Of course, that would not have been a better option than marrying Rochester in any way, but she may have thought the grass was greener in St John-landia.
So to sum it up, there's certainly an argument against it being a happy ending. Take it any way you wish.
Personally I don't care. I actually think she was, indeed, happy. I may not see caring for a spouse in a dump like Ferndean in Bumfuck Nowhere a happy ending, but that's me. Jane, however, does. This is a woman with a very limited worldview, who has never been anywhere and not met many people, who fell in love with the first man who crossed her path, who at barely twenty years old believes nobody will ever love her the way the Roch did. She doesn't think that she deserves anything better than what she got. So yeah, she was happy.
But like I said, I don't care. What I do care about is that Bertha was happy after her escape and divorce from Rochester.

I love your au and I have many questions:
1) what are Rosalie, Jasper and Edwards backstories in this au?
2) how do the Wolfpack fit into it/do they at all?
3) how do the Cullen family react if/when they find out the truth?
They’re all set in the modern day so a bunch of stuff from their backstories wouldn’t apply.
I suppose Jasper could have served in Afghanistan or something? But he couldn’t have lied to get into the army younger so the timing might not work. Maybe instead he was sent to a harsh military school, the headmaster is a senior officer named Maria who is strict and tough on the cadets but the best at what she does. Jasper was the star pupil but now doesn’t know if he actually wants a career in the military after all.
Edward can still have workaholic lawyer dad and doting mom in Chicago. Piano prodigy, maybe, planning to go to Julliard (or heh, there’s the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY). Bella plucking him from his human life to be her eternal vampire mate would rob him of his future in music.
Rosalie I guess would be the prom queen and president of the student council. She’s the queen of the school and runs with a mean girl clique and is dating the most popular (and rich) boy Royce King but is disillusioned by the whole thing, and secretly prefers hanging out with her “unpopular” friend from elementary school, Vera, than being the Queen Bee, but she can’t quite admit it to herself yet. She can’t wait until high school is over and she can stop trying to be what she thinks everyone expects her to be and just be herself--and then Royce proposes on Prom night and she doesn’t know what to do. She wants to get married and have children someday but not right out of high school but everyone around her (except Vera) seems to think it’s a fairy-tale come true.
I haven’t figured out how/if to include the wolfpack, because it’s so hard to undo the inherent racism of the “magical Indian” trope and using a real tribe. I think if I do include them it would probably be a more traditional style werewolf where they were bitten/scratched or maybe there was “something in the water” or a curse, and I’d include some of the human kids from school in the Pack so some Quiluetes happened to become werewolves, but it’s not a genetic thing unique to them that others and dehumanizes them as a group. Maybe there was a party on First Beach one full moon and there was an attack/curse/magical ~something that turned all the teens at the party--some from La Push, some from Forks--into werewolves. They realize what happened and band together to support one another and help each other learn to control their new powers.
I haven’t yet decided how it’s all going to go down when they find out that Bella didn’t “save” them but arranged or lied about their “deaths” and recruited them for a Forever Perfect Family. But by the time they do find out I think Bella does feel bad about it, and they have all come to care about each other, so it would be messy and complicated but I’m not sure how it ultimately plays out.

Wide Sargasso Sea: Second Half
When Antoinette visited went to Christophine’s home to seek advice and ask for her help in making her husband fall in love with her again was probably her first mistake. Christophine did not want her to do it, she expressed that it was foolish and only made an agreement to help if Antoinette spoke to Mr. Rochester first. She did and I’m wondering if maybe she hadn’t drugged him, perhaps their marriage wouldn’t have been as bad, or at least he might not have slept with Amelie although this could be a wrong assumption. I do feel like he slept with her to upset Antoinette, it seemed like he didn’t really regret it rather only regretted ever stepping foot on the island. When he asked Amelie if she was still sorry for him, she said yes but that she was also sorry for his wife, I take this as she is saying she pities her because her husband will never love her.
I don’t understand why he even listened to Daniel, I don’t know if Daniel was actually her half brother, I don’t think so. In a way it goes to show how much we let others and their opinions affect our relationships and consume our thoughts.
I mean, it’s possible that Daniel could have been telling the truth, or at least he told the truth about Sandi and Antoinette’s relationship. Maybe Antoinette would have been happier if she had ran away with Sandi, I think the author really was expressing that Antoinette really loved Sandi and they truly wanted to be together. Especially with how she talks about Sandi when looking at the dress.
I feel like Rochester is about power and control, he didn’t want Antoinette to go on when Christophine said that she would take care of her and find someone else for her to marry. He couldn’t settle with the idea of not having any control over her, he was jealous and not because he loved her, if he had loved her then he wouldn’t have locked her away. In a way he reminds me of Lawrence from Little Bee, just in the way that he acts towards Antoinette, it’s similar to how Lawrence would act towards Sarah. He would act detached or get upset at how she would react to something.
I find it sad that Rochester basically left her living the same life as her mother. I don’t think she nor her mother were insane, I think her mother finally went crazy after the loss of her son and being cooped up as well as from what I interpreted the author to hint, being assaulted by the servant. I don’t think Antoinette was insane though, I think she was isolated and angry. If she had left, she would have been much more sane. He was a very toxic and controlling man, in a way he seemed like a narcissist as well as a sadist. He wanted to take her away from everything she knew and loved, he hated Christophine and wanted to remove her from Antoinette’s life and used the fact that Christophine got arrested and threated to call the police as a way to keep her away from Antoinette, he even says when they are leaving that he wanted to see if she cried and if she had then he would have held her and basically made it seem that if she didn’t then she didn’t actually care.
Antoinette expressing how her mother felt about her, and how she was ashamed of her provides more clarity on how Antoinette feels in my opinion. I think she always felt like she was unworthy of love and truly just wanted to be loved and accepted but never was, she ended up isolated, miserable and alone when all she needed was to be loved and cherished. From what I take, Antoinette doubts there is a god and I think this intersects with how she was raised and treated by family and those around her. She felt like an outcast, no one that she needed love from ever showed her that she was loved and mattered. She lived a miserable life and lost everything and I think she resented god for that.
I feel like Antoinette and Little Bee could relate to one another in the sense they both have been through so much trauma and have been isolated from the world, both weren’t able to experience life as a normal person would. Antoinette went to a convent, then remained in her own home with a man that controlled her and was then locked away in his attic like a prisoner, Little Bee was trapped in an immigration center and didn’t get to see the world for so long and then not long after she was free, she was sent back to her country. Both stories are left open-end so you never know what truly happens to the two characters. Both characters lost their siblings, watched everything they loved and know fade away from them. Antoinette’s home being destroyed and Little Bee’s village being invaded. They both witnessed death at such young ages and they both struggled with inner demons or “baddies”. There are also differences that I feel in a way parallel with one another, like Antoinette is called a name that is not her own by her husband who is basically creating a new identity for her while Little Bee takes on a name to keep her true identity safe but I feel like Little Bee would rather have been herself and go by her true name, I think for her it was exhausting pretending to be someone else.

I hope everyone who celebrates had a great Christmas!
I can’t believe I’m writing this — 2018 is looming…waiting in the wings…right around the corner! It’s practically here! I’ve been pretty out of the loop for the latter half of 2017, but I have managed to find a LOT of 2018 releases to anticipate (surprise, surprise!). All of my 2018 anticipated releases aren’t here; I wrote another post in October featuring some more!
But before I get on my list, I’m going to book-push the one 2018 release that I have already read and ADORED! The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert! I’m sure you’ve heard about it by now. The hype has been huge surrounding it, and extremely well-deserved. It made its way on to my favorites list immediately after I finished reading it. Think the magic of The Night Circus, meets YA fairytales!
Now, on to the books! I’ve sorted them by month and release date so you can easily plan your book-buying!
January
Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh

But there is a cost to being raised–the Dead must remain shrouded, or risk transforming into zombie-like monsters known as Shades. If even a hint of flesh is exposed, the grotesque transformation will begin.
A dramatic uptick in Shade attacks raises suspicions and fears among Odessa’s necromancer community. Soon a crushing loss of one of their own reveals a disturbing conspiracy: someone is intentionally creating Shades by tearing shrouds from the Dead–and training them to attack. Odessa is faced with a terrifying question: What if her necromancer’s magic is the weapon that brings Karthia to its knees?

To be published August 7, 2018, by Balzer + Bray.
Adeluna is a soldier. Five years ago, she helped the magic-rich island of Grace Loray overthrow its oppressor, Argrid, a country ruled by religion. But adjusting to postwar life has not been easy. When an Argridian delegate vanishes during peace talks with Grace Loray’s new Council, Argrid demands brutal justice—but Lu suspects something more dangerous is at work.
Devereux is a pirate. As one of the outlaws called stream raiders who run rampant on Grace Loray, he pirates the island’s magic plants and sells them on the black market. But after Argrid accuses raiders of the diplomat’s abduction, Vex becomes a target. An expert navigator, he agrees to help Lu find the Argridian—but the truth they uncover could be deadlier than any war.
Benat is a heretic. The crown prince of Argrid, he harbors a secret obsession with Grace Loray’s forbidden magic. When Ben’s father, the king, gives him the shocking task of reversing Argrid’s fear of magic, Ben has to decide if one prince can change a devout country—or if he’s building his own pyre.
As conspiracies arise, Lu, Vex, and Ben will have to decide who they really are . . . and what they are willing to become for peace.

While the latter half of the year is a bit scarce at the moment, I know I’ll be adding more as the year goes on. 2018 is looking like it’s going to be another great year for books! All of the titles highlighted above that also have the synopsis are the books I’m particularly excited about. I’m also thrilled that so many of my favorite authors are going to be coming out with new books this year!
Whelp, this is my last post before the new year, so have a lovely end of 2017! This year definitely wasn’t the best in terms of the world, but my personal year was a great one.

Deaf Chick Drops Dat Knowledge
Subtitle: I Try To ‘Splain Why Some Deaf People Don’t Wanna Hear
Hello, Earthicans!
So, my hearing friends regularly ask me “Bee, why do some D/deaf people not wanna hear?” and whenever I try to explain it to them, I just end up tying myself in knots until I look like I’m being electrocuted and/or having a massive seizure. I get my thoughts out better on paper--or, in this case, Tumblr, because who writes on paper anymore, amirite?--so here I am to answer said question.
With the help from our friends from space!
No, not astronauts, as badass as they are. Aliens!
I hope to use an analogy. An alienology, if you will.
Okay, here we go.
Why wouldn’t a D/deaf person want to hear if given the opportunity? Well, I used to ask myself that question too until I found myself late deafened and spent time around quite a few Born Deafies at Rochester Institute of Technology, where I went to school. There is a 7 percent Deaf/Hard of Hearing population there, and many NTID (National Technical Institute of the Deaf) students were raised Culturally Deaf. They have a culture and language all their own; each country has its own version of sign language. Even Hawaii has its own unique form of ASL.
Okay, with that out of the way, on to the aliens!
Let’s say aliens from Planet Xel 5 come around to visit fair Earth. As an experiment, they endow every person on the planet with one of their alien senses, telekinesis. All aliens of Planet Xel 5 have it. It’s NBD to them but to us it’s like--
So, humanity is suddenly endowed with the ability to lift shit with their minds. Now, it sounds amazing, right? Why wouldn’t everyone love this? Well, it turns out that there are drawbacks. Some people just cannot get a handle on controlling their telekinesis. They’re lifting shit they don’t want lifted. The TV’s flying out the window during Game of Thrones. Someone else reaches for the toilet paper, he jerks his head, and the whole toilet goes flying down the street with him on it, butt ass nekkid with his pants down around his ankles. Now, those who have a handle on their new nifty sense frigging love it but those who do not just want it to go away and only purposely use it when they have to.
It’s often the same for Deaf people who get a CI later in life. Those “ZOMG hearing for the first time!!” videos are VERY misleading. Generally, the person is hearing the machine working. If they her any conversation at all it’s muffled and sounds like it’s underwater. It’s not a miracle cure. It’s not BANG POOF hearing ALL the things. You gotta work at it. It can take a very long time.
Furthermore, for someone not used to sound, a sudden influx of it in their lives might be too much stimulation and they’d prefer sign language communication instead.
Okay, now the aliens come back, right? Experiment over, they take away the telekinesis. Those that loved it are bummed, and those that were annoyed by it don’t care much that it’s gone. Let’s say you loved it. You’re bummed, but you can live without it, right? You didn’t have it since birth, so it doesn’t really matter if it’s gone. You can function in life without lifting shit with your mind (I guess unless you’re Eleven from Stranger Things).
To the aliens of Planet Xel 5, however, they were born with that sense. They have no idea how to live without lifting shit with their minds. They cannot live their alien lives without it. The few who were born without it, though, either choose to get a device that allows them to lift shit with their minds or not. The ones that don’t get the same question people in the Deaf World get--why don’t you wanna lift shit with your mind? “Well I’ve never lifted shit with my mind and/or I lost the ability to lift shit with my mind at a very young age so I do not remember being able to lift shit with my mind. That’s pretty much why.”
There’s my alienology. I hope it was sufficient.

Jobs in Cars: The Automotive Art of Pat Dougherty
Pat Dougherty is one of those guys who makes mere mortals wonder why they’re so lame. At least that’s the effect he has on your author. Pat’s happily married and has raised three kids, he can sing and act, his “Blues Patrol” Blues Brothers stage show has packed New England venues for 20 years, he’s an ASA Certified master automotive technician, but most of all, Pat can draw cars.
No computers are involved, and he isn’t the type to obtain realism via retouched digital photos. The only digital aspect of his drawings are his 10 fingers. Everything on the paper comes directly from his inquisitive and detail-oriented mind. Ever since elementary school art class, Pat’s had an innate ability to create highly realistic renderings without much training beyond the usual public-school curriculum. But it was during architectural graphics class at Stamford High School (the same Connecticut public school that hatched star-crossed Hogan’s Heroes star Bob Crane a generation earlier) where Pat says, “My teacher, Mr. Burkhardt, was very supportive and fed my interest with helpful commentary. It took off from there.”
In particular, Pat’s grasp of the technical sideline of drawing, as described with terms like “fineness of line,” “perspective,” “realism,” “shading,” and “proportion” is highly calibrated. Beyond that, his attention to realistic details like factory part numbers, correct surface textures, and—to this writer’s opinion—getting the correct rocker panel “tuck under” or “fuselage effect” are what separate Pat’s work from that of other automotive cartoonists. Check for yourself: too many automotive illustrators and cartoonists fail to properly capture the tube-like surface development of most automobile bodies. They’re rendered with vertical slab sides that simply aren’t correct. Dougherty’s stuff differs.
After high school, Pat went to work at an architect’s office. There, he “discovered the empty feeling of doing work that others took credit for.” Following his passion for cars, he left the architect after a year and went to work at Fairbanks Racing Transmissions, a leading East Coast retailer of high-performance automatic transmissions and components. At Fairbanks, Pat did a lot of everything, from assembly to marketing to answering tech questions by phone. Yes, Pat even applied Fairbanks’ trademark black tiger stripes–over–Caterpillar Tractor Yellow graphics to completed transmissions and torque converters prior to shipment: “We used a template to mask off the stripes.” No, Pat’s transmissions weren’t “signed by the artist,” but he took extra care to make sure the paintwork was applied with care. Maybe there’s one in your garage or under the floorboards of your hot rod.
After leaving Fairbanks, Pat spent the next 30 years working for AAMCO transmission shops in Connecticut. But through it all, Pat remained active at his hobby of drawing automotive subjects while also finding time to raise a happy family of three. Today, Pat is transitioning into the world of self-employment with a business centered around his hand-drawn renderings of cars and trucks. During the car-show season, he can be found at more than 30 outdoor events, including the Syracuse Nationals in New York, Carlisle Chrysler Nationals in Pennsylvania, and others where he’s given spotlight space to do his thing before the passing crowd. We visited Pat’s Stamford, Connecticut, home and studio for a look at his work. If you dig what you see, Pat sells reprints and is also ready to render your vehicle in his unique cartoon-realist style.
Working in pencil, Pat’s drawing style combines the disciplined realism of illustration greats Dave Kimball, William A. Moore, Steve Swaja, and Tom West with the distorted whimsy of Pete Millar, Ed Roth, Bob Thompson, Alex Toth, and George Trosley. It’s crisp but not slick and overproduced. Pat says, “The metal parts are cool enough as they are. They don’t need me to make them better.”
A close-up of the Chevelle Z16’s L78 396 engine shows Pat’s allegiant attention to often overlooked details like the correct casting numbers and steering shaft clearance crease in the driver-side exhaust manifold. “I hone in on items unique to each car and spotlight them. No detail gets away without scrutiny to see if it can add an extra level of technical correctness to the drawing.”
This 1969 Super Bee portrays Pat’s novel approach to rocker panels. Unlike the slab-sided interpretations of certain other artists, the rounded side profile and tucked-under skirt of the real car body is respected. Commissioned by the owner of a modified Super Bee, Pat captured the Demon Six Shooter induction system correctly. Pat’s life-long ownership of real muscle cars helps him solve technical problems like merging the 440 Magnum exhaust manifolds into the canister-style Hemi muffler shells. He drove a V-code 1970 Charger 440 Six Pack with a factory-installed 4.10 Dana to his job at Fairbanks and still owns a 1970 Super Bird and 1974 Dodge Monaco “Blues Mobile” clone.
This 1968 Road Runner offers another look at Pat’s graceful execution of the rocker panel tuck-under and fuselage-shaped surface development. Note the correct depiction of the 11-inch drum-brake backing plates. Compare them with the (optional) disc brakes rendered on the Super Bee. Pat’s superlative grasp of “perspective” and distance is seen in how the driver-side headlamp bezel is the center of the image; from it, the rest of the rendering falls into the background by obeying the law of zero point.
This 1965 GTO represents a “day two” car with 421 swap (note fender emblems), Hurst wheels, Royal Bobcat tweaks, and Thrush mufflers. The shaded detail of the unloaded A-body front suspension is mouthwatering. The “bathtub” air-scoop pan atop the Rochester Tri-Power setup depicts the over-the-counter GTO Ram Air equipment first offered in August 1965. If Pat told us there’s a four-bolt main Super Duty block under the heads, we’d believe it.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Lightly modified with headers, a Milodon oil pan, and Cragar SS mags, the owner of the real C-code 429 Cobra Jet–powered 1971 Cougar who commissioned this drawing also added a J-code 429 Cobra Jet-R hoodscoop and air-cleaner assembly to the his car. The central fuel-line entry position identifies its factory-installed GM Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel carburetor. CJ-R 429s had 780-cfm Holley carburetors with different fuel-line routing. Pat demands—and delivers—this level of accuracy in all of his drawings. As always, the graceful rocker panel tuck-under is perfectly rendered.
Each of Pat’s illustrations rewards attentive viewers with hidden details like this Chevrolet Bow Tie logo hidden amidst the exhaust plume. Return to the overall view (above) to spot the Mopar Pentastar being expelled from the driver-side exhaust collector. Though Pat is a Mopar fan at the core, he’s wise enough to appreciate all makes.
As this 1970 GTO Judge convertible depicts, “I position the image on the page so the viewer is roughly at tire height. This way the car appears to be jumping off the page and coming right at you. Of the 40,149 GTOs built in 1970, only 168 were Judge convertibles. Note the detail expressed in the vented disc-brake rotors and by the base of the Saginaw power-steering box. The seam welds in the Flowmaster mufflers are given as much attention as the fine mesh of the grille insert.
Another Pontiac, this 1968 LeMans was rendered for a client who wanted a picture of the car he bought brand new in 1968—and still owns. Built as a non-muscle model (note: it’s not a GTO), Pat correctly rendered the 255hp Pontiac 350 right down to its single-snorkel air cleaner, Rochester 2CG two-barrel carburetor, and log-style exhaust manifolds. Pat even included the new-for-1968 Harrison cross-flow radiator and standard-issue, 9.5-inch front drum brakes.
If a car was born for Pat’s spot-on rocker panel tuck-under treatment, the 1970–1974 Mopar E-body is it. This 1970 Challenger R/T sports the base 383 Magnum. New for 1970 was Chrysler’s adoption of the Holley 4160 four-barrel carburetor in place of the Carter AVS employed on 383 Magnums in 1969. Dig Pat’s application of casting numbers and realistic rendering of the dual-snorkel, air-cleaner housing.
Resisting the temptation to finesse the late-model LC Challenger’s slab-sided rocker panels, Pat rendered the 2015 Challenger SRT8 Hellcat perfectly. In celebration of how modern muscle cars have embraced the once-dreaded catalytic converter, Pat placed them prominently in view, complete with wideband oxygen sensors and three-wire connections.
“I drew this 1965 Plymouth A990 Race Hemi during the 2015 Carlisle Chrysler Nationals show. I was seated in front of a real one on display and members of the original Ramchargers walked by and complimented me. That was a fantastic memory.” Note the oil cup in the distributor, keenly defined lower control arms, and Holley logo on the outboard carburetor float bowl.
To Pat, the wheels are just as important as the car they support. This close-up of the Race Hemi’s factory-issued, 14-inch front wheel correctly presents its large-diameter hub, three-nub cap flange, and low offset wheel hoop. The narrow 7.75-14 bias-ply tire is also masterfully rendered.
(Art Director, please draw a circle or position arrow to indicate the “vacuum motor”). The 1971–1974 Mopar B-body’s fuselage-styled body is a perfect fit for Pat’s rocker panel tuck-under technique. This 1971 383 Road Runner also highlights Pat’s problem-solving skills. Ordinarily, the up/down vacuum motor driving the N96 Air Grabber scoop (see arrow/circle) is hidden by the underside of the hood. While many artists might choose to ignore it, Pat “fabricated” a support brace so it could be included in the “logic” of the scene.
Pat’s drawings seldom include people, but as this illustration of the Phantasm 1971 Barracuda proves, he can render living beings just as well. Here the 1979 cult classic film’s Tall Man (played by actor Angus Scrimm) takes the wheel, ready to throw the evil orb. Note how Pat artfully replaced the stock Pistol Grip shift handle and his take on the Hurst logo.
Your author’s Rampage Match Bash 1963 Dart caught Pat’s attention and is shown here, partially completed. Being intimately acquainted with the car, I’m stunned how Pat accurately rendered the spacing of the welded-together header tubes. Nothing escapes Pat’s keen eye.
As a teenager in the early 1980s, Pat drew the Greenwood turbo Corvette and a 1970 SS396 Chevelle in 12th grade for professor Burkhardt’s architectural graphics class at Stamford High School. Though lacking the whimsical fun of his later works, Pat’s early mastery of the craft is clear to see. As shown by the Hemi rocker cover and Carter AFB carburetor, Pat keeps life-size props nearby to ensure accuracy.
Way back in 1987, Pat (“Elwood Blues”) converted this locally purchased 440 big-block Monaco into a Blues Mobile clone and hit the road with his Blues Patrol musical act and scored positive reviews. Still active, he’s available for booking at his website.
