Does anyone else remember that older textpost (that maybe I'm misremembering or making up, lmao) where a woman told a story about being hit on at her gym by a guy that basically looked like Thor, but once she turned him down on account of being a lesbian, he easily shrugged it off and set her up with his sister instead?

Okay, hear me out, that but with a stucky twist because *gestures broadly at the content of my blog* yeah.

Can you imagine Steve at his regular gym--lean and ripped as ever, looking absolutely unreal, an Adonis in sweats and dri-fit shirts--taking notice of a woman, Becca Barnes, and tentatively approaching her?

He's aware of his size, and he knows they're in a gym, and it's not exactly appropriate to flirt when people are just trying to get through their workouts in peace, but... she's very pretty, and the few times she's brought a friend to workout alongside her, her laugh is great. He would like to get to know her, hear that laugh more. So, he gently approaches her.

When she turns him down, telling him she's not just not interested in him but not interested in men at all, he's disappointed but already backing off until--

The woman (she gives him her name, Becca) cracks a joke about how today's actually his lucky day because this is rejection without rejection. Steve is confused until she tells him she's a twin. He's actually still confused then, so she has to keep explaining... and, as it turns out, the queerness is strong within the Barnes' twins because her brother, Bucky, is gay.

Gay and Steve is, apparently, totally his type.

Becca muses out loud to Steve that she's been trying to drag him out to the gym with her for a few months, but so far, he's resisted. Her lips quirk into a funny grin, buuuut she's pretty sure she's close to convincing him. Really, he'll probably come the next time she does, say, on Wednesday around 6:45pm after she gets off work..?

Steve just blinks at her, not understanding until she winks at him, then, it hits him like a frying pan.

Oh.

He's being set up.

He's not being called a creep like he was afraid of for taking notice of someone at the gym while they get sweaty and buff and are clothed in tight athletic wear, instead he's, he's being set up. Rewarded, even.

"Did I break your brain there, bud?" Becca chuckles politely at him. She frowns after a minute, "or, uh, it's okay, if you're not into, y'know, that. Guys. Whatever, I didn't think about that because I'm--"

"N-no, I," Steve stutters, "I..." he trails off, thinking about Becca's blue eyes and cleft chin and shiny hair and how pretty she is and how pretty men are, too, and, "I'll be here then," he promises hoarsely.

"Good," Becca grins like she knows exactly what he's thinking.

And actually, now that they're standing toe-to-toe, she really reminds him of Natasha. That smile, sharp and gorgeous. Maybe... maybe he should bring a gym buddy on Wednesday, too, then? It's only fair, right?

oh you liked how in my fic for him. bucky didn't fall from the train well what if he did?

His phone buzzes. Steve picks it up and sees a text from Hill, then another one comes in. They’re both phone numbers. The first one is Becca’s and the second is Benny’s. Benny’s name is still Barnes, but Hill’s text has Becca’s last name as Proctor. Steve exhales, then he calls Becca.

It rings for a long time. Steve bites his lip.

“Hello?”

Becca’s voice is rough and cracking with age, but it’s her. Steve exhales heavily.

“It’s Steve,” he says quietly. “Hi.”

There’s silence for a moment.

“What flowers were at your wedding?” Becca asks. 

Steve smiles, bittersweet, but it’s just like Becca to be suspicious. “Red carnations and daisies. Bucky had a daisy in his lapel,” he adds. “Your ma did all youse’s hair with daisies, too. And you and Betty had matching dresses, little cap sleeves and empire waists and a bow in the back, and your ma bought both of you a pair of kitten heels, even though you were only eight, they were yellow with bows, too. Benny had a dress with a big poofy skirt and she kept grousing about it, even though she tried to get me to wear a wedding gown with a poofy skirt. I let Benny pick the color of your dresses, though. She picked pale yellow because she was obsessed with lemons back then. The wedding cake was lemon because of her, lemon and lavender.”

“Steve…” Becca exhales. “Is it really you?”

“Yeah,” Steve whispers, trying to hold back sudden tears. “Becca, Bucky – Before he – Before –”

“What?” Becca asks gently. “What did Bucky do?”

“‘M pregnant,” Steve confesses.

“Oh, my G-d,” Becca whispers. “Oh, my G-d. You’re pregnant?”

“Three months,” Steve then tells her, his voice almost breaking. “I’m about three months in.”

“Did Bucky know?”

Steve lets out a watery sort of laugh. “Yeah,” he says. “Yeah. He – He said I could go on one last mission, the mission to get Zola, then he was gonna tell Colonel Phillips and get me discharged. We didn’t know for sure, but…”

“Oh, Steve,” Becca murmurs. “Where are you, honey?”

“Brooklyn,” Steve whispers. “Bedford-Stuyvesant,” he adds.

“Okay, honey, I’m gonna come pick you up, alright? I got a spare bedroom, you can have it. Bucky wouldn’t want you to be alone. What’s your address?”

Steve bites his lip hard, fighting back tears. But she’s right.

“Alright,” he mumbles, then recites the address for Barton’s apartment building. “I don’t have a lot of things right now,” he says. “I – I, uh, I’m trying to get the Smithsonian to give back all our stuff…”

“I heard your collar got taken out of the exhibit,” Becca says. “You have it?”

“Yeah,” Steve answers. “I had to get a new key fitted for the lock. Buck–”

He can’t say it. Bucky had had the key on the chain that held Steve’s dog tags. It had fallen with him, to be forever entombed in stone and ice.

“It’s okay, honey,” Becca tells him. “I won’t be long, just an hour. Have you got a nest set up yet?”

“No,” Steve admits softly. “I – I want –” His voice cracks and he swallows. “I want my nesting stuff. It’s all in the Smithsonian. They’re saying it all belonged to some Omega I collared.”

“I’ll sic my grandkids on ‘em,” Becca says. “What have you eaten today?”

Steve groans and drops his head back against the wall. “Protein bars,” he mutters.

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“Bucky’s gonna come back from the grave and take a double-folded belt to your ass if you don’t start taking better care of his property,” Becca offers kindly.

Steve laughs a little again, then wipes tears from his eyes. “You’re right.”

“What have you got other than protein bars?” Becca asks.

“Protein shakes,” Steve sighs.

“Oh, boy, Bucky’s rolling in his grave.”

Steve almost laughs. He squeezes his eyes shut and takes a shaking breath.

“If you need to cry, you should,” Becca says. “It’s good for you.”

“Call me when you get here,” Steve murmurs. “I have to pack.”

“Alright. Just an hour, big brother.”

Don’t mind me, just feel like sharing the Barnes family that lives in my head

James “Bucky” Buchanan Barnes: The oldest sibling, hella protective of his siblings (only they are allowed to make each other miserable, anyone else will suffer). Huge nerd, loves sci-fi, good at most of telle things that he tries, he loves his family more than anything, it’s that simple

Steve(n) Grant Rogers: is one of the Barnes as far as anyone is concerned, most people actually believe that because of how much time he spends with them and how close he is with all of them. He and Bucky are the closest and know each other by heart, but he’s also really good friends with the girls and sometimes jokingly calls Winnie and George “Ma”, “mother”, “pa” and “father” usually when he’s being a kiss ass to piss of the siblings. Honestly he pretty much lives at their house at this point. He’s a Barnes sibling, not up for debate for any of them.

Mary-Anne “Annie” Charity (Sheldon-)Barnes: She’s aboit a year younger than Steve and two and a half years younger than Bucky, but honestly, she’s probably the most mature out of the bunch. She’s the mom of the friend group (yes the siblings are also pretty much a friend group, they love each other. Unrealistic from my experience but leave me alone) and she’s also the most helpful around the household. She’s the only Blonde in the biological Barnes family, which often helps Steve to blend in with them. She and Steve are besties, she had a huge crush on him when they were kids but got over it eventually, she likes to joke that Steve is her favorite brother when she’s messing with Bucky. She’s usually the one reasoning and lecturing the others but often ends up being the one to cover for them when the others are doing something stupid. Bucky used to call her “MAC” because of her initials to piss her off, and got her to tear up on her wedding day when he called her “MACS”. She got married to William Sheldon as soon as she was old enough to get married and had a son called Charles (everyone called him Charlie), Steve was his godfather.

Rebecca “Becca” Marjorie (Proctor-)Barnes: she’s three and a half years younger than Bucky and is the sibling that annoys him the most. Bucky and Becca are always finding ways to mess with each other and make the other miserable (figuratively speaking, they would never try to actually hurt each other). Annie is usually the one to split them up when they’re arguing. She looks a lot like Bucky and has a ton in common with him, and they both hate it and use it to annoy the heck out of each other. Later on she gets engaged to Arthur Proctor who asked for George, Bucky and Steve’s blessing to marry her. They got married after the war. She became an activist for civil rights and peace after the war. She and her husband Arthur died in a car crash in 1960. They were the Winter Soldier’s first mission.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Madeline Barnes: depending on my mood, she’s between 16 and 10 years younger than Bucky. Either way, she’s the baby of the family. She’s the sweetest kid alive, and looks a lot like her siblings. She was one of the many people who believed that Steve was a Barnes, and broke down crying when she accidentally discovered the truth at the age of ten, running to Steve and begging him not to leave her even though he never had any intentions to do so. She’s a very smart kid who hangs on her older siblings’ every word. She trusts them never to lie to her, even when the truth is ugly, they do their best to explain things to her in a way she can understand (and not get traumatized by in the case of the war).

George Barnes: is their father, he lost his middle and ring finger of his right hand during the Great War, and the idea of war terrifies him though the first years of Bucky’s life were hard on him, he usually managed to ground himself with the presence of his children. His family is Jewish, and his uncle Randolph is a total dickhead that is not allowed near his children ever since that one time.

Winnifred “Winnie” Barnes: she’s the mother, she and George love Steve like one of their own, she’s an amazing cook and loves when Steve and Sarah stay over for meals, she’s very generous and especially during the depression when everyone was in need, she never hesitated to give up things to others who needed it more. She’s catholic like Steve and Sarah and raised her kids to know her religion, though they picked more up from their father

Sarah Rogers: is Steve’s mom, she doesn’t get to spend as much time with the children due to her need to work for a living, she loves how close Steve got to that amazing family and is always reassured that he has someone behind his back when he does something stupid and has another family to rely on when she’s at work. She and Winnie pretty much share custody of the kids, they love seeing her whenever she has the time

Anyway, just some personal headcanons that no one asked for!

Random bucky question timeeee

Do you think Bucky would have tattoos? Like maybe something small or just one or two? Or lots. Or do you think it depends on whether its canon or an AU?

I LOVE THIS ASK

Let's say in this one instance that Bucky is not acting as a good Jewish boy, as the Torah forbids voluntary tattoos. (Anything needed for a medical procedure, or done by force, doesn't count from my reading.)

So we know Bucky shipped to England before going to Italy, and probably was in England a few times to touch base with SSR as. Howlie. Let's say he was able to stop off in London to go visit Harry Burchett, who was the 'king of tattooists' at the time.

Edith in the poster in the background is his wife, I love her.

Anyway, back to our boy. He wouldn't get anything too big, even though Burchett's designs could run that way - there's a large chance his ma and rabbis are gonna kill him over a small one as it is. I also don't think he would get a militaristic or nationalist tattoo - he didn't enlist for a reason, and he's a member of the ACP for a reason.

I think he would get a sweet heart tattoo.

This is a Lyle Tuttle design instead of a Burchett, but it was a popular choice for soldiers at the time. I am sure Burchett had one in his own style.

The swallow represents a journey across the ocean because it is a bird that can go long distances and return home. So soldiers would get swallow and ribbon tattoos to serve as a companionship symbol to keep their sweethearts close to them while away at war.

Unfortunately, he can't get Steve's name, as much as he would like some way to feel closer to him at that moment. If he got blue carded, it would shame his whole family and community back home.

And he can't put 'Mom' there, Winifred Barnes is gonna be so disappointed as it is.

So I think he goes with 'Becca' for his youngest sister. It's somewhere conspicuous, like maybe his chest near his ribcage, to keep it close but out of sight.

By the time Rebekah gets to see it, she's an old woman but Bucky has barely changed

Fic Summary:

It is May of 1946, over a year after his fall from the Hydra train and losing his left arm, and James "Bucky" Barnes is struggling to adjust. Working as an analyst at the New York City SSR branch, Bucky tries to put the war and all of its sorted memories behind him. However, try as he might he is plagued by thoughts of Magdalene "Maggie" Ramirez, a Women's Army Corps (WAC) Corporal he met in London and hasn't spoken to since before his fall in January of 1945. Little does he know that Maggie, in her struggle to put the war behind her, has moved to the city and looking for a job with the New York Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. Now, by sheer dumb luck, they are reunited as they both fight come to terms with what they were to one another during the war, and work to figure out how to move forward in a world that was unprepared to deal with the consequences of war in the unsteady peace.

Chapter 30: A Brave Leap

Maggie meets the Barnes women, and both Maggie and Bucky ponder what this means for the future.

Excerpt:

The train station was loud, bustling with people, men in uniform, a few Red Cross volunteers, and other wartime workers all hustling to get where they needed to go. The line for the pay phones was absolutely astronomical, and she was aware of the strange looks she was getting—the sidelong glances and the double takes (never mind the outright gawking).

She hadn’t been unaware of the smear campaign but also hadn’t believed that anyone would buy it either, or that she would have to face down half her hometown just so she could use the phone.

Half of her had a mind to just hitch a ride home, rather than continue to stand in line so she could call Pai to send Tony and Danny to come and get her from the station. Wouldn’t that be a thing? Just show up unannounced on his front doorstep. Tony and Danny would be so upset that they’d been robbed of the opportunity to pick her up.

Her stomach turned as the next reality dawned on her.

They were going to be happy to see her, right? Things were so different now than they had been only a few months ago. They’d still be glad she’d enlisted even though she was going overseas now, right? They didn’t believe the smear campaign, did they? That all the WAC girls were like that? Would they?

Her mind spun, her stomach churning, all the possibilities and what ifs running through her brain as she tried not to think about how much had changed—how much she had changed since she’d left a few months ago, and how much she was still likely to change after she shipped out in a few weeks.

And she knew she wasn’t alone. Daniel had received his notice and was getting ready to go to boot camp before being shipped out.

How different would they be when they made it home?

“Corporal! Corporal Ramirez!!���

Maggie whirled around to find Tony and Daniel walking toward her, big grins on their faces.

“Tony? Daniel!” She grinned, adjusting her rucksack on her shoulder, rushed to them. “I thought Pai wasn’t going to send you until I called!”

“Couldn’t resist the temptation to get here before you called.” Tony laughed. “Come here, kid. Let me take a good look at you.” He held her out at arm’s length, and Maggie waited with bated breath as both her older brothers surveyed her with serious expressions.

“What? What is it?” She asked, shifting from one foot to another. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, it’s just—“

“Barnes here.” James’s voice called, pulling her out of whatever rabbit hole she’d fallen down.
