Film after film: Let the Sunshine In (dir. Claire Denis, 2017)

The first out of three (so far) collaborations between Denis and Binoche plays relatively simple. It's shot and narrated conventionally, which is only occasionally interrupted by a perched angle or a longer pause. The plot centers around Binoche and her encounters with several men, frustrating, emotionally draining, and yet somehow interesting and likely pleasant. I like to think of this film as one that both of them decided to make during one of the many development breaks in filming High Life.

“In the Renaissance there was a great outpouring of engraved and woodcut images by French and German humanist and polymath writers on demonology depicting what we might call broadly witchcraft and demonic possession. Some of this art appeared in books and some was in anonymous broadsheets relating to Inquisitorial trials like those of the French werewolves Pierre Burgot and Michel Verdun and the German Stubbe Peter. The most important of these books were Jean Bodin’s (1530–1596) De la démonomanie des sorciers (1580); Claude Prieur’s (d. ca. 1596) Dialogue de lycanthropie, ou transformation d’hommes en loups (1595); Jean de Nynauld’s De la lycanthropie, transformation et extase des sorciers (1615); and Beauvois de Chauvincourt’s Discours de la lycanthropie, ou de la transformation des hommes en loups (1599), as well as the arch collector of lycanthropic tales, Henri Boguet of Saint-Claude, in Burgundy’s Discors exécrable des sorciers (1602) and the German Johannes Weyer’s (1515–1558) De Praestigiis daemonum et incantationibus. All were especially fascinated by werewolves, among other instances of the demonic irrupting into human life.”

2023 Bat of the Year - Round One

Chapin's Free-tailed bat (Chaerephon chapini) hails from the African countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda. It is presumed to use its fancy hairdo for courtship displays.

Hoary Bat (Lasiurus cinereus) on the other hand can be found in most of North America. Two related species, the South American Hoary bat (L. villosissimus) and the Hawaiian Hoary Bat (L. semotus), were once classified as subspecies of the hoary bat but are now believed to be distinct species. Their name comes from their appearance--their white tipped fur gives them a frosted look, and "hoary" is an old-timey English word for frost.

Bonus fun fact: The Hoary bat was described as a new species in 1796 by French naturalist and zoologist Palisot de Beauvois, using a holotype* collected in Pennsylvania by an individual identified as "Master Pancake".

Brillantaisia ulugurica

Instamatic

Brillantaisia ulugurica was discovered in the early 1800′s in the Uluguru mountains of Tanzania by the Frenchman, Palisot de Beauvois. It was he who introduced Brillantaisia to the flower gardens of the world. 

I took the first two photos inside the Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver last August. The Bloedel Conservatory, a giant geodesic dome, was opened in 1969 and outside stand two bronze sculptures. The first is the enormous “Knife Edge” by Henry Moore, a masterpiece of abstract art. The second is a life size sculpture of some contemporary ‘dude’ holding a Kodak Instamatic camera. 

The Instamatic camera went on sale in 1963 for 16 dollars and fifty million were sold before it went out of production in 1970. This simple ‘point and shoot’ camera used easy-to-load film cartridges and it changed the world of photography. I should know, I got one as a Christmas present when I was a kid. It was my first camera.
