maybe its cause im autistic and normal children dont have problems with this but i don’t understand the obsession with maintaining fantastical lies about reality for children to maintain their ‘sense of wonder’. i get the idea of like wanting them to enjoy the unique experience of seeing the world without knowing the mundane way reality works but at some point it’ll have to be revealed that you were literally lying to them anyway and any joy they’d built on those false ideas is gonna come crashing down without its foundation.

i just can’t think of many times where my experience would have been made worse by being told ‘this is an imagination exercise, we can still have plenty of fun with it on those terms even if it’s not real’ beforehand, but i can think of plenty that were made worse by being told impossible things are real and then being extremely let down and upset when i asked further and got told errrrr sorry we made that up
