a first (business) date | jai & samara 002
location: olive kitchen & bar timestamp: early monday evening
Shaking the sleeves of his shirt, Jai climbed out of his car which was conveniently parked in one of the premium bays of the building he was about to announce his death of his single life from. He didn't need anyone knowing where he was right now, particularly the media. They had hounded him enough over the course of the day while he was preparing for a new role.
Walking towards the elevator, he ignored his phone buzzing in his pocket, determined to avoid checking in with Tanvi. She was really starting to grate on his nerves with her demands of what this meeting— no, date, get it right, should be. He was capable enough to handle these things on his own, without anyone's interference. If she wasn't so talented at handling his schedule and aspirations, he would have fired Tanvi a long time ago. As it stood, he knew she had ideas about a potential new starlet, but his manager hadn't made noise... yet.
It was probably why he had given in to the date/meeting being held at Olive and not at Soho House or Taj Lands End (where media wasn't allowed anywhere close to the premises). It still wasn't his top choice for a meeting and hoped that the buzz around him would be minimal - and his fans wouldn't disturb the dinner either. Maybe I should inform the manager about needing privacy tonight, a booth might be better, or even a private dining room? I just really don't need to be asked for photo ops tonight, even if my fans are mostly adorable creatures. They can cry over the social media post that Tanvi will undoubtedly queue before I wake up tomorrow.
Arriving at the front desk and silently thanking whomever decided that the elevator entrance would be on the inside of the restaurant, Jai smiled at the waiting host while making his requests for privacy.
"Although I don't mind being spotted whenever I dine here, tonight I do require some... intimacy, if you would please?" It never hurt to be sweet about these requests; Jai knew that hospitality staff weren't treated the best and they held power over his food and service for the duration.
The host obviously understood his request and led him through to one of the quieter areas of the restaurant, both in the crowd and the music. He sat down and let the waiter who had suddenly appeared pour him some still water, deciding to sit back and let his date appear before perusing the menu - who knew if she was allergic to anything, or had some strict regimen that would not allow her to eat much?
This is exactly why I avoided these contracts. There's just too much to question and be aware of. But, I'd rather be of help than be a snob. Isn't that what maa would say after all? I wonder if she'll laugh when I tell her about this... f***, I hope dad & Neena don't find out. Dad thankfully doesn't follow tabloids, but Neena? No thanks.
Jai pulled out his phone while silently stressing over what he was going to say to his family. Without even looking at the screen, he cut the call and decided to deal with it later. He had to focus on this evening, focus on how the next six months of his life was going to travel. Whether he enjoyed it or not.

JOHN DEACON of Queen, and musician/engineer Henry Crallan are partners in a new recording studio venture — Milo Music, a 24-track recording facility in North London, which is part of a complex that also houses video and design studios plus other related businesses.
Here, Deacon and Crallan, a former keyboards player with the Kevin Ayres band, talk about the project which is now up and running and open for business.
MW: Is this your first venture into the commercial studio world?
JD: Yes, for me it is. As a group we've been involved with Mountain Studios in Switzerland for quite a few years now, but unlike a lot of bigger UK bands where the individual members have their own studios at home and that sort of thing, none of us has ever really got into that before, got involved with a 24-track professional studio, though I used to have a 16-track at home. Henry and I first discussed this project about two years ago.
How did the partnership come about?
HC: We've known each other for about eight years. I used to work with Edwin Shirley, the trucking company, and worked on a number of Queen tours which used to have a reputation among all the crews as being a bit special, which, retrospectively, I think they were. For three years I managed the staging department at Edwin Shirley and did further Queen tours including Mexico and South America. To build a studio was an age-old dream that I had. I think I first discussed it with John on a flight to Japan, and it's grown from there.
How does Mountain Studios fit into the scheme of things?
JD: Montreux is something we got involved with some years ago, at a time when UK taxes were quite crippling. It was a group investment we made. Jim Beach (Queen's management) basically runs that studio, and the four of us don't really have a lot to do with it, though we have recorded there, and Roger did a lot of his solo projects there.
In a way, we began to find it was becoming very difficult to do group investments — all four of us have got such different ideas about what we want to do. We've really started venturing out, doing more things individually, whereas in the old days we all used to work solidly on Queen 52 weeks a year. We have actually slowed down the work rate now so it gives us all time to work on other projects.
I have always enjoyed studios and that side of the business - I did electronics at college and have always wanted to learn. That's why I got a 16-track at home — but it was only a back-bedroom sort of affair. It was a development from this that Henry and I started this project really. Henry had said he wanted to build a studio, and I said I had the equipment which would be better suited to a proper studio than to a bedroom...
[Photo caption: JOHN DEACON and Henry Crallan take stock of the newly-completed studio area at Milo. The studio measures 24’ x 14’ and is fully isolated with hard and dead ends. There is also a 7’ x 7’ isolation booth. The resident piano is a Steck Baby Grand. A number of instruments are available for hire at discount subject to availability, including Linn Drum, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Korg CX-3. Yamaha DX-7 keyboards, Fender and Gibson guitars.]
[Photo caption: FEATURES OF Milo's control room (14’ x 15’) include 24-track Studer A80 Mk IV. Studer 810 1/4" and Sony F1 digital, an Amek Angela 28:24 console in-line with extended patch-bay. Monitoring is Sean Davies 3-way LS 841, power amplifiers by BGW, Turner and Quad. Mini monitors are Auratones and Visonik Davids. There is the usual range of microphones, compressors and limiters, reverberation & delay effects and processors.]

Moreover, everyone gets to take home a personal souvenir from the event, which means the memory of your special day stays with them longer.

Choosing the Right Photo Booth Rental

Whether you're in downtown San Francisco or in the broader Bay Area or any other place, you’ll find options that cater to your specific needs.

October 18 - Yesterday Molly D travelled from Solomons to an anchorage in Fishing Bay (Deltaville, VA). Unlike our transit from Annapolis, the winds were light and Molly D had to motor sail. The day was a bit cool and the sun wasn’t shining brightly but we managed to keep the chill at bay in the cockpit. David installed the final pieces of the cockpit enclosure and the cockpit was (almost) free from chilling breezes.
Compared to last year, I think we are stuck in a large group of migrating boats. We may have beat the large rallies that will be leaving soon, but many boats are moving south now. There were 14 boats in Fishing Bay last night, more than double what we have seen in previous years.
Looking at the shore in Fishing Bay
Sunset in Fishing Bay
Morning light in Fishing Bay
Today was another motor sailing day into Hampton, VA. Again, we were in a pack of boats heading south. The Hampton/Norfolk area, in addition to being the home to Naval vessels, is an extremely busy shipping port. We noticed close to two dozen ships anchored just waiting their turn to enter a terminal in harbor.
As we made our turn to head into Hampton, I noticed that much progress has been made to the new bridges leading to the Hampton Roads tunnel. We have been watching the construction progress over three years.
The new bridge to the Hampton Roads tunnel. The current bridge, which is lower than the one being built, can be seen in the back of the photo.
Molly D is overnighting at the Hampton Downtown Marina. Not the fanciest marina around by any means, but the staff is top notch. We always stop here in the fall and the spring. When we were at the Annapolis boat show, I stopped at the marina’s booth and picked up a coupon good for a free night’s stay. Ka-Ching!
The finger piers at the marina are extremely short and Molly D is quite long. Molly D’s bow line must go around the outermost piling. The line must be lassoed around the piling and brought back to the boat to be secured. The line can also be secured to the piling using a long boat hook to loop the line around the pole. I told David that I would do my best to lasso the pole. Never been able to do it. Being 5’5” tall, having T-Rex arms, and being a klutz don’t help at all with the task. Lucky for me, the tide was nearly high and my aim was quite good so I was able to lasso that sucker on the first try! Victory dance!!
I did it!!! First try!!!
Tomorrow will be a long day. We will leave early so that we can make Coinjock (54 miles) before the prime rib is sold out.

Some wildfire evacuations end in British Columbia, but fire threatens community farther north (AP) The wildfire situation showed some improvement in British Columbia on Sunday, with more people being allowed to return home, but blazes continued to threaten communities farther north in Canada’s Northwest Territories. Hot temperatures and winds expected to gust to up to 40 kph (25 mph) were fanning flames around the Northwest Territories town of Hay River, on the south shore of Great Slave Lake. About 240 wildfires were burning in Canada’s northern territory. So far, 296,678 hectares (733,107 acres) had been affected.
Biden (and Trump) seen as too old for office (AP) Americans actually agree on something in this time of raw discord: Joe Biden (80) is too old to be an effective president in a second term. Only a few years his junior, Donald Trump raises strikingly less concern about his age. But they have plenty of other problems with Trump. If anything, some say, the 77-year-old ought to grow up. Age discrimination may be banned in the workplace but the president’s employers—the people—aren’t shy about their bias. In the poll, fully 77% said Biden is too old to be effective for four more years. Not only do 89% of Republicans say that, so do 69% of Democrats. That view is held across age groups, not just by young people. In contrast, about half of U.S. adults say Trump is too old for the office.
Tropical Storm Idalia Strengthening as It Moves Toward Florida Gulf Coast (WSJ) Tropical Storm Idalia is set to intensify into a hurricane on Monday on its way toward Florida, which is bracing for its first major storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. The storm is expected to make landfall Wednesday as a dangerous major hurricane and lash the Gulf Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Idalia would come ashore in Florida’s Big Bend region, where the Panhandle meets the state’s peninsula. Idalia, which strengthened into a tropical storm Sunday, could become at least a major Category 3 hurricane before it reaches Florida. The storm Monday afternoon was swirling northward in the Gulf of Mexico toward western Cuba, about 315 miles southwest of Key West, forecasters said. DeSantis declared a state of emergency for more than 45 counties. Much of the Gulf Coast, including Tampa Bay, was under a hurricane warning Monday. Thousands of people in low-lying areas were ordered to evacuate.
Thousands gather at annual Redhead Days Festival in the Netherlands (Washington Post) At this festival, red is more than a hair color—it’s an identity worth celebrating. Thousands gathered in the city of Tilburg in the Netherlands this week to celebrate redheads and “gingers” at an annual summit, complete with campfires, photo booths, portrait painting, dancing and even an info session on skin cancer. “Anything that makes you special, whether that is red hair or a quality, like introversion, is something you should not hide, but rather celebrate proudly and exuberantly and make it your unique selling point,” the festival website reads, adding that people from more than 80 countries have attended throughout the years. About 1 to 2 percent of people with European ancestry have red hair, according to a 2019 academic paper, though the number can be higher in areas such as Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Redhead Days Festival started informally in 2005, when its director, a painter named Bart Rouwenhorst, put out a newspaper ad for 15 red-haired models and received registration information from 150. Because Rouwenhorst “had trouble saying no,” he asked all the models to gather for a group photo, according to the festival’s website. The event then inspired him to start formally organizing the event.
A Former French President Gives a Voice to Russian Sympathies (NYT) Nicolas Sarkozy, the former French president, was once known as “Sarko the American” for his love of free markets, freewheeling debate and Elvis. Of late, however, he has appeared more like “Sarko the Russian.” In interviews coinciding with the publication of a memoir, Mr. Sarkozy, who was president from 2007 to 2012, said that reversing Russia’s annexation of Crimea was “illusory,” ruled out Ukraine joining the European Union or NATO because it must remain “neutral,” and insisted that Russia and France “need each other.” His statements provoked outrage from the Ukrainian ambassador to France and condemnation from several French politicians. The remarks also underscored the strength of the lingering pockets of pro-Russian sympathy that persist in Europe. In France, Germany, Italy and elsewhere, not even the evident atrocities of the Russian onslaught against Ukraine have stripped away the affinity for Russia traditionally found on the far right and far left.
Italian banker hailed a hero after catching toddler falling from fifth floor balcony (CNN) A 37-year-old banker from Turin is being hailed a hero after miraculously catching an Italian toddler who fell from her family’s fifth floor balcony on Saturday. Mattia Aguzzi said he and his girlfriend were walking to a bread shop in central Turin, Italy just before 11 a.m. local time, when he heard a man yelling for help from an upper floor apartment. “I heard a man scream when he saw a little girl leaning out on the ledge. When I saw her fall I stepped in the way, closed my eyes and hoped that everything was going to be for the best, I blocked her by cushioning the blow and we both fell to the ground,” he said. First responders took the girl to hospital. He said the girl’s parents were in shock but the girl is “fine.” The banker said he isn’t a hero. “I tried to do what had to be done.”
Wagner chief Prigozhin’s lingering popularity a challenge for Putin (Washington Post) Russians mourning the death of Wagner chief Yevgeniy Prigozhin have set up makeshift memorials in nearly two dozen cities across Russia and occupied Ukraine in recent days, a sign of the commander’s lingering popularity and a potential challenge for President Vladimir Putin amid divisions within the elite and in the military over the conduct of the war. The memorials—while not a national outpouring of shock and grief—nonetheless showed Prigozhin’s support across Russia in hard line pro-war circles, and highlighted the Kremlin’s delicate task of managing potential anger among his supporters, with many in Russia’s elite convinced that Prigozhin’s death was an assassination ordered by the Kremlin. During the war, Prigozhin grew his popularity with salty, brutally direct videos recorded near the front lines as explosions blasted nearby, visiting his men in underground warzone bunkers. As Russia’s war effort faltered, he emerged for many as a trusted truth-teller, one of the few prominent figures willing to defy Russia’s laws against discrediting the military, by exposing military failures and steep casualties.
In a Place Shattered by War and Earthquakes, People Feel Forgotten (NYT) On the spot where a three-story building completely collapsed after a devastating earthquake struck northwestern Syria in February, a small tent encampment has sprung up. Residents call it “the camp of the forgotten.” In one of the tents—which feels like a sauna during the daytime—sleep Fatima al-Miree, 61, and her family of seven. It’s pitched outside their single-story home, which still stands next to the encampment, but with cracks running threateningly up and down the walls. She said she had lost count of how many aid groups had come, photographed the damage and left. More than six months after a powerful earthquake hit northwestern Syria and southern Turkey, many of those affected in Syria feel forgotten: There have been limited repairs and almost no rebuilding. And while the death and destruction in neighboring Turkey was far greater, the recovery effort in Syria is far more complicated. Millions of those living in the quake zone had already fled fighting, and many were sheltering in tents or other makeshift housing, reliant on international aid, when disaster struck again. The situation has worsened recently. Last month, a U.N. resolution to allow cross-border aid from Turkey expired, putting much of the humanitarian support for the area in limbo.
Pope to fly across world to visit Mongolia’s tiny Catholic flock (Reuters) Mongolia’s Catholics—all 1,450 of them—could be squeezed standing into St. Peter’s Basilica dozens of times over and their number is smaller than the congregation of a small parish in some small towns. So why is Pope Francis, 86 and in need of a wheelchair, travelling 8,278 km (5,143 miles) to visit them this week? Essentially, to paraphrase British climber George Mallory’s response in the 1920s as to why he wanted to climb Mt. Everest, because the Catholics are there. Visiting places where Catholics are a minority is part of Francis’ policy of drawing attention to people and problems in what he has called the peripheries of society and of the world. Francis, who will be attending an inter-religious service in Mongolia, said at his weekly noon address on Sunday that he would be visiting “a Church that is small in numbers but vivacious in faith”.
Heavy rains, floods inundate China (Reuters) Chinese weather forecasters on Monday warned several provinces to expect torrential rain and flash floods over the next two days as unrelenting downpours wreak havoc on the country. More than three thousand people were evacuated in northwestern Hunan province over the weekend as heavy rain was unleashed on Sangzhi, Shimen and Yongshun counties, and Zhangjiajie City, according to state media. China has been gripped by weeks of rains and floods amid an unusually wet summer. In late July, storms from Typhoon Dokusri caused record rains to hit China in over a decade, with Beijing experiencing its heaviest rainfall in 140 years.
Behind the AI boom, an army of overseas workers in ‘digital sweatshops’ (Washington Post) In Cagayan de Oro, a coastal city in the southern Philippines, thousands of young workers log online every day to support the booming business of artificial intelligence. In dingy internet cafes, jam-packed office spaces or at home, they annotate the masses of data that American companies need to train their artificial intelligence models. The workers differentiate pedestrians from palm trees in videos used to develop the algorithms for automated driving; they label images so AI can generate representations of politicians and celebrities; they edit chunks of text to ensure language models like ChatGPT don’t churn out gibberish. More than 2 million people in the Philippines perform this type of “crowdwork,” according to informal government estimates, as part of AI’s vast underbelly. While AI is often thought of as human-free machine learning, the technology actually relies on the labor-intensive efforts of a workforce spread across much of the Global South. The mathematical models underpinning AI tools get smarter by analyzing large data sets, which need to be accurate, precise and legible to be useful. Low-quality data yields low-quality AI. So click by click, a largely unregulated army of humans is transforming the raw data into AI feedstock.
Climate activists target jets, yachts and golf in a string of global protests against luxury (AP) Climate activists have spray-painted a superyacht, blocked private jets from taking off and plugged holes in golf courses this summer as part of an intensifying campaign against the emissions-spewing lifestyles of the ultrawealthy. Their tactics have been getting more radical, with some protesters gluing themselves to roads, disrupting high-profile sporting events like golf and tennis and even splashing famous pieces of artwork with paint or soup. They’re now turning their attention to the wealthy. David Gitman, president of Monarch Air Group, a Florida private air charter provider, encouraged activists to think twice about whether they’re taking the right approach. “If their activism goes toward some sort of actual assistance to real programs to make real change …, I think that this kind of activism can help achieve those results,” said Gitman. “Now, if they go out and they spray-paint a private jet in an airport in Europe, is that going to get those results? In my opinion, no.”

Identifying the Right Venue for Your Event
Finding the right venue for your event is crucial to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience for your guests. The size, location, and amenities of the venue will all contribute to the overall atmosphere, so it is important to consider these factors when selecting the location. Consider the size of the venue and the number of guests you plan to host, as well as the type of event you are having. If you are hosting a large party or a formal gathering, you may need a large venue with multiple rooms, while a more intimate gathering may be better suited to a smaller location.
Utilizing the Available Amenities
When selecting a venue, it is important to consider the amenities that are available. Many venues will include a stage, sound system, and other necessary equipment, while some may also include catering, decorations, and more. Utilizing the amenities provided by the venue can help to create a more enjoyable and unique atmosphere for your event. Additionally, you can use these amenities to make the event more interactive and engaging for your guests, such as providing a photo booth or setting up a game area.
Maximizing the Space at Your Venue
When hosting an event, it is important to maximize the space available. This can include rearranging furniture or decorating the space to create a more visually appealing atmosphere. Additionally, consider how the space can be used to accommodate your guests. For larger events, consider providing seating and tables, while smaller events may require more room to move around. Additionally, consider the type of event and the type of activities you plan to have, as this will help you determine how to best use the space.
Creating a Unique Atmosphere
When selecting a venue, it is important to consider the atmosphere you want to create for your event. Consider the type of event you are hosting and the type of guests you plan to invite, as this will help you determine the best atmosphere for the event. Additionally, you can create unique and engaging atmospheres by adding decorations, music, and food to the venue.
Leveraging the Location's Advantages
The location of the venue can also impact the overall atmosphere of your event. Consider the type of environment you want to create, as well as the type of guests you plan to invite. For example, a venue located in a city center will likely create a different atmosphere than a venue located in a more rural area. Additionally, consider the advantages of the location, such as proximity to public transportation or local attractions.
Staying Within Your Budget
As with any event, it is important to stay within your budget. When selecting a venue, consider the cost of the venue, as well as the cost of any additional amenities or services you may need. Additionally, consider the cost of food, decorations, and other items that may be necessary for the event. It is also important to factor in any fees or taxes that may apply to the venue.
Making Your Event Memorable for Attendees
Creating a unique and memorable experience for your guests is key to ensuring a successful event. Consider the type of event you are hosting and the type of guests you plan to invite. Additionally, consider ways to make the event more interactive and engaging, such as providing a photo booth or setting up a game area. Additionally, consider ways to make the event more enjoyable for your guests, such as providing food and drinks, or offering entertainment options. By taking the time to create a memorable experience for your guests, you can ensure that your event is a success.

Thursday 16th of March
Hey journal today has been good so I I had my driving lesson all of it went good and I did well most of the time apart from the end of the lesson where the driving instructor told me to front bay park and I couldn’t remember what I was doing and I forgot to do it. Also I ended up panicking so I ended up messing it up when I went to do it. Anyways I just need abit more practice on parking as the parking area of my learning is definitely my weak point if I am being honest. Anyways after my lesson I met up with Alyssa, Caitlin and Daniel. Firstly I played some pool with everyone I played Caitlin and lost but only just, then I played Alyssa and won then I was beating daniel but I accidentally lost at the end by potting the black ball to lose the game. Also somehow when Alyssa was playing against us she accidentally hit the ball of the table multiple times somehow.
Then after this we went bowling and we played two games, the first game i came a second as i needed to get about 5 to win on my last shot however I just completely and only ended up getting one which is so awful and I dont know how I managed it. Then in the second game I came joint first also I didn’t do bad either of the games as I got about two strikes all together and also a couple spares which is really good. Then also another thing that happened is this family and kids decided to play next to us and Caitlin went watch you language to us to make sure we didn’t swear then about 30 seconds later she gets a strike and ends up swearing and apologising a lot and getting really embarrassed. Anyways after this we went in the arcade for a little bit and we played on the basketball machines, ice hockey and also me and Caitlin used the Photo Booth and took more photos together. Then after this we went to the cinema and watched scream. The film was good however it was not as scary as I thought it was going to be it was more gruesome rather than scary. There was little to no jump scare’s unfortunately. After the cinema we all quickly went to the toilet in Maccies. Then we all walked to the bus station and Daniel got the bus and the rest of us got a lift from Caitlin’s step dad. But overall the day was good.
Bye journal!
