I normally only skim the edges of the Warhammer 40K sphere every once in a while, but every so often youtube decides I might want to watch things, so today I got a glimpse of the spin-off video game Battlefleet Gothic Armada II. And, specifically, I got a glimpse at the (spoilers) non-canon Necron ending to said game.

So. Firstly. I’ve always been a Necron girl. Favourite faction every time I’ve skimmed the edges of 40K. They’re ancient robot mummies with hyper tech who rebelled against, destroyed, and now use their gods as power sources, and then took a couple billion years of a nap afterwards, I love them a lot. So. I pretty much always root for the Necrons?

But this game. It’s set during Chaos’ 13th Black Crusade, where the forces of Chaos storm out of the Eye of Terror to wreak havoc on the galaxy. And. If you play as the Necrons. Everyone else (well, the Imperium and the Eldar, anyway) is fighting to defeat Chaos and push them back into the Eye. The Necrons? If you let them get their massive planet-sized World Engine called the Dark Throne into position and powered up?

They close the Eye itself instead.

The Eye of Terror. The massive warp storm that was ripped into realspace by the birth of the dark god Slaanesh 11,000 years ago. The rent through sanity that signalled the death of an empire and the birth of a dark god, the beach-head that Chaos has been using to charge out from for the past eleven millennia. Give the Necrons ten minutes to warm up their death star, and it’s just deleted.

I fucking love the Necrons. Waking up from their mindbogglingly long nap, staring out at the rest of the galaxy fighting a horrific war of attrition, and just being all …

Have you tried just turning it off?

Like literally everyone else isn’t staring at them in gobsmacked terror and awe because you can do that?

Absolutely beautiful. Best faction ever.

Naturally, this ending is non-canon to the main 40K universe, because of course it is, you can’t just go around deleting the Eye of Terror! But. I love when spin-off media decide to go what if. What if the Necrons, or at least one particular pair of Necrons, actually got their asses in gear and left the internecine politics alone long enough to politely tell the entirety of Chaos to just bugger off for a bit? What would that look like?

Awesome, is what it looks like. Heh.

What game are Amarkun and Zaa from :3?

They are from Battlefleet Gothic: Armada II, which is currently on sale on steam at 3.99! It is a very fun game, but I am terrible at anything war related, and so I am still stuck at the Trazyn's early mission on easy.

Those two have so much sass together. You will suddenly find yourself laughing so hard it might hurt.

I don't want to spoil anything, but it is such a great game ! The Inertialess drivers on the necron ships will make you think you are a commander, (although just ramming someone with the Imperial ships is ( ੭ ˘ ³˘)੭‎°｡⋆♡‧₊˚ the BEST). All you need to do on necrons is to ILD your ships into the middle of the enemies, and release all your scarabs, all while your small ships just go *phew phew* from the other side of the map, but maybe you might not want to listen to me, I somehow lost with Settra on easy mode in TWWH III

They went after Tommy F and his designs it's trying to find them and they figured out something to do people have those and they have the ships some of them you see here and they're beautiful and they're or need and he knows how to build them but he did steal the designs from the clans and he stole a lot of ships from them and he build more a lot more and he's in trouble with the law for doing things to our son's plan and our daughter's plan and now he is sought by everybody

This is JUST steam games:

1. Total War Warhammer II, 1005 hrs. I still haven't touched the Beastmen...

2. Stellaris, 449 hrs. I do not have a single achievement since the Gigastructures mod was made in a lab for me, like one of those rat devices that makes them starve to death by giving them drugs

3. Battlefleet Gothic Armada II, 316 hrs. Ships go BOOM. I've been meaning to play the Imperium campaign with the Skalgrim mod, but it makes the early game nearly fucking impossible.

4. Warhammer 40k Dawn of War: Soulstorm, 315 hrs. Starting to see a pattern... This is entirely the fault of my being obsessed with the Ultimate Apocalypse mod back in high school. If we include Dark Crusade (121 hrs), Winter Assault (4 hrs) and the base game (15 hrs) this goes up to #2.

5. Deep Rock Galactic, 302 hrs. Amusingly, this is the only game on this list I still play regularly. Rock and stone!

Honorable Mentions:

-Titanfall 2. I have about 230 hours in it on PC, and probably another 50 or so on Xbox. My favorite FPS of all time.

-Batman Arkham City, which I have beaten around 11 times and spend probably upwards of 400 hrs in, all on console

-Ultrakill, which is only 2/3rds of a game that you can beat in less than 2 hours. Nevertheless I have 130 hours in it for some reason (it's because it's awesome)

I mentioned that I saw the Necron ending for Battlefleet Gothic Armada II the other day, and it was niggling at me that the music during the cinematic reminded me of something. Eventually, I realised that it was Woland’s Theme, from the 2005 Russian miniseries adaptation of The Master & Margarita:

Which is, as you can see, a boss-ass piece of music.

So, for Halloween, I decided that I’d watch back through said miniseries. Given, you know, the plot of the devil and his entourage descending on a city, and the woman and her lover caught in the middle of it. It seemed suitable for the occasion. Heh.

It is, happily, available on youtube with subtitles, so I didn’t have to go far. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy it. Mostly the Moscow sections, to be fair. Koroviev is definitely my favourite character. And Margarita herself, the ball sequence in episode 7/8 is excellent.

Apparently there’s a new movie adaptation out this year? I might have to find that. In the meantime, though, I have the book upstairs somewhere, I’ll definitely have to dig it out again.
