Battlefield 1 Nothing Is Written Hear the Desert

I think one of the reasons the whole "it's not accurate but it will get people interested into the actual thing" never works is because if you take away accuracy you're often replacing it with tropes and common falsehoods. BattleField1 was just another shooter, only with every possible WW1 machine guns standing for AR clones.

And if you take away the accuracy, the bits that make WW1 media actually true to WW1, well there's nothing interesting or out of the ordinary about this game, and therefore there's no reason for the players to check out accurate WW1 media.

Like it's already an argument making up for a complete lack of focus in media design, but now I think I understand WHY it never seems to work.

Series that manage to do that are already extremely close to being historically accurate, like Rome, which is a textbook example on how to make good historical fiction. And that's because the fictional elements are insert pov characters giving personal and character-driven justifications to historical events otherwise unfolding ROUGHLY the way they did. You're not gonna get anyone interested if you take away how weird Roman society was back then, because that would feed into the pre existing misconception of a white Christian marble Rome that everyone think they know existed when Caesar took power.
