Book 2, Chapter 5, Page 2
Archived Text Follows:
Hey Everyone,
Sorry for the delay! Looks like we have a new character here: Comte Antonin Lusignan. Antonin was in the same Instruction Group as Christophe, they trained to be Limb pilots together. These Instruction Groups often result in lifelong friendships or rivalries among the nobility and royalty of Dhuvalia.
Thanks for reading,
– Luther out
Comment Text Follows:
XRzer04 - The more we get the story on these fancy folk, the more I get the feeling that the pilot killed in the last engagement was a Somebody. I mean, with a final word like “besides, he’s just some bandit”, he almost certainly Must be anything but just another soldier…Right?
Drace - Indeed. And we now know prince falls on face has a brother. Potentially a dead one.
Deoxy - The guy that just got splatted? He had a scar through his left eyebrow (I immediately went and checked).
tkg - it’s hard to tell if thats a scar or shadow or blood splatter, but I’d wager his death is a bit important.
Deoxy - It’s definitely not blood spatter – it’s slightly lighter in color than the facial skin… which makes it very unlikely to be a shadow, either. Having known someone with a scar through the eyebrow like that, that’s just about EXACTLY what it looked like – a break in the eyebrow that is slightly lighter in color than the rest of the skin on the face. Also, a facial scar is what a noble is going to care about, it’s what would get people’s attention. Considering all the writing cues and obvious foreshadowing, it’s clear that is the “bandit” they just splatted is indeed the older brother of someone in line tot he throne… meaning he WAS closer in line to the throne. So yeah… oops. That’s not really going to be a problem, right?
tkg - for note I’m clad to see a Duvalian that actually has a human range of facial expression for once. More so that they aren’t apparently vulcans as Christophe seems to indicate.
XRzer04 - Oh, right “scarring this one too…” They’re gonna be really mad now… Y’know, I’d be all for the Dhuvalians, with their neat, orderly social structure and their concepts of honor and whatnot, and think the 1IRB was a bunch of money-grubbing pigs, if not for that stunt with stomping on a wounded soldier. I mean, the way it’s been framed, coming from the POV of mostly the battalion, and the first real atrocity we’ve seen coming from their side, it makes what Dizee did look like just a little Payback. In reality, there are probably just such actions happening on both sides of the conflict all the time and the 1IRB really are only after money in the kind of way that I’d hate to work for, (Diz is basically indentured at this point if I read it right), but they’re portrayed as a loveable bunch of swine and the D’s are seen as cold hearted aristocratic jerks. It’s all in the telling.
Zarpaulus - There’s no saints in war. Morally unambiguous wars are the rare exception, not the rule. In fact pretty much the only one I know of with straightforward “good guys and bad guys” was WWII, and even then the Allies had Stalin on their side.
Sazuroi - And even that one was, at best, unambigous at the political level. Even the allies firebombed Germany to ruins and threw nukes on Japan, and the Soviets raped tens of thousands in Berlin after they took it, later proceeding to steal every useable bit of machinery from their part of Germany. It’s just that the Axis did far worse (Massacre of Nanjing, Holocaust). Nobody came out of that mess unstained. We can count ourselves lucky that they managed to avoid slippping into World War 3 right afterwards, like after “The Great War”.
Sazuroi - For clarification: Yes, Germany and Japan took vastly fewer civilian losses and Italy was utterly ineffectual, but the allies also made some decisions that are by no means “white”. Part of the reason the Iran is such a hate today is that Britain and Russia conquered it in World War 2 to prevent it from possibly helping the Axis and set up a puppet leader. The political system never managed to recover from that, and what I just said is a widely acknowledged position of the Persians themselves. If we had not somehow avoided a clash between the Soviets and the Allies right after WW2, there would probably not be a single person claiming it was a morally unambigous war. Morals aren’t even made for war, much less nowadays when we live in unprecedented peace and prosperity. Yes, even with an unending financial crisis and a growing income gap it is still unprecedented, since unlike in the 60s or whenever everything was supposedly right with the world there are people outside of Europe who do not live in abject poverty. A scant few. And even then I was wrong about the losses, most of the losses were Russia and China, then only Axis powers and Colonies before the USA (No civilian losses noted, 400k lost soldiers) even show up, and the other western allies well below that. Granted, there is no way it could have been done appreciably better, except if Russia and China had been much more stable and better prepared than they had any hope of being at that time, but “inevitable” is far from “morally right”. There is only “moral” in war if somebody is alive to try and escape the nightmares by claiming moral rightousness afterwards.
Jack McCrary - There were numerous US civilian casualties during WW II. Besides the various civilians associated with the military, many merchant mariners were lost and woman and 5 children were killed by a bomb in Oregon.
Sazuroi - I don’t doubt it, but compared to other countries, it was a drop in the ocean. A very, very red ocean: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II#/media/File:World_War_II_Casualties2.svg If that war was ended by burying the Axis under a pile of corpses, it was Russian corpses.
Sazuroi - It’s kind of distressing that I only lifted the URL of this comic from my broken Laptop just now and there is only one new page. Best of luck to the author team.
