It's a double entendre. Asexual. Trans masculine, genderqueer. Pan/demiromantic. Tankosaurus Rex is my bro. Hello, my name is Envy and I love animals. Sometimes I draw things. Sometimes I roleplay. You can usually tell what I like from what I reblog. My blog has no theme #everythingonmain. Don't be shy, c'mon in.

I miss the world before AI image generation
Secondly, I also miss the world where AI image generation was just incoherent blobs and obvious fakes
Thirdly, I miss when I had a spark in my eye

You know, with all the trouble over the live action Snow White remake and how long it's actually taken to make it, it would have been the perfect opportunity for another studio to make a film about Adriana Caselotti, who voiced Snow White but wasn't even told she was working on a full length film and only realised it at the premiere, was paid only $970 (roughly $21,217 in 2024) for the job, wasn't credited for the role and basically had her career in films ruined before it even started, because dear old Walt Disney refused to let her take other roles: 'I'm sorry, but that voice can't be used anywhere. I don't want to spoil the illusion of Snow White.'

Mari Ibarra is of Mexican heritage. Optically, I understand the way a white woman wearing her hair, as she is a woman of color. However, it’s weird to call it scalping, or compare it to scalping at all. In North America we have come to understand scalping within the context of colonial conquests and against various native tribes. Scalping quite literally involves removing the base of the scalp and the hair surrounding it. The scalps were generally collected as trophies, not worn as adornments. During the war between the Apache people and the Mexican people of the time involved scalping on the part of the Mexicans, who placed bounties on scalps as proof of death. This is just to contextualize the nuance of scalping as it pertains to the character. As a Mexican-American, her hair does not have cultural significance in the way that people are interpreting it to have.
Optically, sure, it’s terrible. Within the context of the story, it’s still terrible, only for narratively obvious reasons. Mari suggested they take off Jackie’s clothes, therefore Shauna demanded they take everything from her. It’s emblematic of the escalation of violence and dehumanization within the wilderness. The writers should have thought this through. They should have considered the horrible treatment of Simone and Sammy. They should have considered the neglect of Akila and the clumsy handling of Kristen. There are many, many cases of literally anyone who isn’t white receiving less than stellar treatment in the writer’s room and I can see that just as well as anyone.
Calling what happened to Mari scalping is a reach from a technical and historical point of view. There are plenty of issues with the writing and I understand being uncomfortable with the visual presented, but please recognize the cultural significance of the words you use.
