Stockpile of 2,000-year-old gemstones found in Roman bathhouse drain
Tumblr media
Archaeologists recently uncovered a stockpile of 2,000-year-old glittering gemstones clogging the drain of a Roman bathhouse near Hadrian's Wall in Carlisle, England.
The 30 engraved, semi-precious stones — known as intaglios — likely dropped out of the ring settings worn by bathers who took to the waters sometime during the second and third centuries A.D., The Guardian reported.
"It's incredible," Frank Giecco, the archaeologist who led the excavation, told The Guardian. "It's caught everyone's imagination. They were just falling out of people's rings who were using the baths. They were set with a vegetable glue and, in the hot and sweaty bathhouse, they fell out of the ring settings." Read more.

No, my husband can’t stop working even on a holiday! He built the porch for the bath house and moved the cement pads for the walk way, and added railings to the steps of the smokehouse. And I think the heat index right now is like 105 degrees. Chased me right off the porch.
Yes, all the buildings need a paint job and that’ll happen eventually. Hell, they’re gonna look better than our house.
Originally, I was planning on painting them 3 colors, like our house will be, but now I’m thinking barn red with white trim would be super cute.

The Baths of Caracalla in Rome, Italy
The thermae were probably constructed during the reigns of the emperors Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla. This was between 211 and 216/217 AD.

This is FINE
---
There's more than one reason why he's known as the 'Demon Cop'
Look this is 100% self gratifying crack. Based on my own 100% genuine experience:
I have a large tattoo, across my chest, shoulder blades and back. So, I was fairly resigned to the fact I'd probably never get to go to a public bath whilst visiting my friend in Japan, fair enough. One day however, she says she'd found a bath that allowed tattoos, and not just tiny ones that could be hidden by a plaster. So I go, very excited, and end up round the back of an area with a lot of signs advertising SoapIands and LoveHoteIs. I explain in the shakiest Japanese to the lady manning the counter that I have a large tattoo and she waves me in nonplussed. Pretty much every man there is covered in tattoos. Whilst I was drying my hair, one of them tries to ask me something but my Japanese was no where near good enough to answer. When I get back my friend seemed a little worried and then confesses that she'd found out, after I'd left, that she'd sent me to a yakuza bathhouse.
I wish I was able to understand what that man was trying to say to me.
also, the bonus aftermath:

hey Sam! Hope you are having a great start to the weekend! I hear there is a Roman-style bath house (aire ancient baths) in Chicago set up in an old factory. Is this something you would consider trying?
Oh yeah, I've heard of Aire for a while now -- I know some folks who went and enjoyed it, although it was always out of my price range pre-pandemic.
I don't know if it's truly Roman-style, it feels more Roman-themed -- it has all the moving parts, but it's been marketed more as a spa experience, not a bath-house as we might think of them (with plenty of people all moving about between rooms as they choose). If you look at the available packages you can see what I mean. And looking at how the prices have risen, it's still a bit out of my range for something like that. It used to be like $90 for the basic package.
While less authentic to the Roman experience in terms of frigidarium, caldarium, etc. I feel like Red Square (the Russian bath in Chicago) or King Spa are actually much more similar to the ancient Roman experience of communal baths. Particularly with King Spa, you have access to a bunch of different rooms and temperatures, so while there's less bathing other than the hot and cold pools, there's more correlation in terms of "You can move between temperatures fairly quickly in a social setting". And King Spa has great food!

Evolution of the Bath House
So this is us moving what had been the generator house (ours had been the first home in town with electricity and indoor plumbing) from the side of the house to the backyard. It has also been a summer kitchen and kids clubhouse over the years. Yup, moved it on logs, like ancient Egyptians rolling granite blocks.
Tumblr media
The opening for the door was so small it had been impossible to find one that fit. Til we salvaged this one from an old building a town over that oddly enough was owned by the same family before they moved here! Meant to be I guess. We also closed up the front windows and centered new side windows. Hopefully, saving the building from the crazy weather we tend to get here
Tumblr media
That first step was a doozy (and hard on the knees, honestly) so hubs built a porch out of some more salvaged wood and railings we already had.
Tumblr media
And finally today I finished painting! It’s done. I’m done!!! Huzzah! Well, aside from the other buildings we have to paint as well. Bunkhouse is next. You can see it on the left in the back.
(Doesn’t even look like the same building anymore!)
