Year 1594 Part 2:

TW/CW: Infant Death, Stillbirth

Unfortunately the good luck of the previous year did not carry over into the next as Muriel sadly passed away just two days after her birth. 

Barnaby and his wife were eagerly expecting their first born while Adrian decided to propose to a woman who was travelling in the area. To the surprise of the Jaleel family she said yes and soon she moved in with her soon to be teenage daughter. 

The anticipation turned to fear as there was no more movement within and the fear was proved right when Barnaby and Brooklyn’s daughter, Ellen, was stillborn.

Going into My Lady Jane blind and having the following thoughts.

How dare they erase Robert Dudley, I turned it off halfway through and got over myself about 12 hours later and continued on.

Also same for Mary Dudley.

Dominic Cooper is doing his best Elizabethan era Blackadder and I love it.

The ship of Mary/Seymour I wasn't expecting, but seeing moments of it I get it, seriously.

Rob Brydon is a treasure and needs to be protected at all costs.

I love Edward in this, it is no Becoming Elizabeth, but it is a great alternative history version.

Is Fitz Barnaby Fitzpatrick?

I love Jane and for the first time in a while, my favourite character is the main character.

Granny being that Granny is a very interesting choice, especially with the undertones on what they actually represent in history. If going that way another Granny would definitely fill the brief a bit more - but then it will bring up further questions of their line.

THE COSTUMES, for an alt show, they are so good.

Also implying Henry murdered his own brother is wild, ok so he was a tyrant at a young age we get it.

This is definitely more of a comedic version of Reign but with Jane Grey instead of Mary Queen of Scots.

Many weeks later I did this-

Today I finished the project and made this

My personal favourite little fact thing I found about Brian Fitzpatrick (Barnaby's father) on two separate research deepdives on the Fitzpatricks.

In 1522, Brian was having some issues with Piers and Margaret Butler (ironically, his future in laws come a decade later), so he decided to write to the King of England to complain about Butler's aggresion. The messenger that he sent off to England interrupted Henry on his way to the chapel to give him the message. It said this:

"Sta pedibus, Domine Rex! Dominus meus Gillepatricus me misit ad et te jussit discere quod si non vis castigare Petrum Rufum, ipse faciet bellum contra te."

I was curious about what this said, and both books I found it in didn't offer a translation, so I decided to look it up on google. I ended up using google translate (I know, not a trustworthy source). The very VERY rough translation of the message is this:

"Stand on your feet, Lord King! My lord Gillepatricus has sent me to and ordered you to learn that if you do not want to punish Peter Rufus, he will make war against you."

And you don't understand how much I laughed over this. This motherfucker from tiny little Ossory in Ireland threatened the KING OF ENGLAND, and not just a king of england, but the HENRY VIII, with WAR! Do you understand the amount of audacity this man had to have had to do something like this? He either was batshit insane or had literally no fucks to give to probably write out this message, look it over and say "Yes, this is what I want to send to the king"

Imagine how Henry must've felt hearing this message from essentially a near nobody (to him) from Ireland, threatening a whole ass war against him if he doesn't get what he wants. Maybe he found it hilarious, or maybe he was utterly flabbergasted and offended, who knows? Apparently there is no record of Henry's reaction to the message, which is disappointing, because either way, I bet it was entertaining!

Imagine over a decade later, when Brian submits to the Surrender and Regrant policy, and Henry just sees his name and his face and thinks "I recognise you from somewhere" and he just gets flashbacks to the fucking message.

The more you think into it, the goofier it all gets. Brian Fitzpatrick truly was something special, I love him.

“Edward, what are you doing? Your dad is gonna get mad!”

“No he won’t. He can’t get mad at me.”

“But still!! We should be outside with the rest of the party! Come onnnnn, I wanna dance!”

“You don’t have to come with me.”

“I KNOW THAT! But I don’t wanna go alone. Too many adults.”

The young prince laughed. He spread his wings and jumped into the air, flapping over to the huge metal bird cage hanging from the ceiling of the great hall. He perched on the edge, hanging onto the thick steel bars for balance, and Barnaby did the same. They both looked in at the Flightless woman inside.

She was an adult, but still looked really young. Her face reminded Edward of a sheep. But a sad sheep, because her eyes were always dark and anguished, shadowed by purplish-red bags, and she never seemed to smile. Her hair was a mess, tangled and matted, and her cheeks were sunken from improper feeding, but Edward still thought she was really pretty. He didn’t even care about the twin fleshy bumps curled out from her back.

Joan looked up when the cage rocked and slowly blinked tired grey eyes at the pair.

“Hi, Joan,” Edward smiled at her brightly.

Joan just stared back at him.

“I brought Barnaby!” Edward presented his butterfly friend with a wave of his wing. “You remember him, don’t you?”

Joan nodded sluggishly. She hugged her arms around her knees and stared forward again.

Edward thought she was so sad because of how boring her cage was. There wasn’t anything in it at all! How was she supposed to entertain herself?

Well, that’s why he was there.

“I brought some things for you,” Edward said, reaching for his satchel.

“What?” Barnaby snapped his head around to him.

Edward ignored him and pulled out a small basket full of food. “I got something for you to eat. There’s fruit and bread and a block do cheese in there. Oh, and pastries! I didn’t know what flavor you liked so I just grabbed all of them.” He beamed at Joan, hoping she’d smile back, but she didn’t. She did, however, exhale a soft breath from her nose that seemed like a laugh, so Edward took it as a win.

“I also got you some water,” Edward pulled out a canteen of water. “A brush and a blanket...” He pulled out a brush and blanket. “Oh, and some books! For you to read!”

“You can read, can’t you?” Barnaby squinted at Joan.

“Don’t be mean.” Edward elbowed him lightly in one of his four arms. He looked back to Joan, smiling softly at her. “Here.”

He slid the satchel through the bars of the cage. Joan stared at it for a long moment before uncurling herself from her fetal position. She moved like her limbs were sticky with molasses, slowing her movements as she crawled over to the bag and peered inside. Then, she looked up and whispered in a hoarse, husky voice, “Thank you.”

Edward beamed. His tail feathers had to be wagging at a million miles a minute. He got a thank you out of her! They were definitely best friends now.

1500-1599 Recap Part 80:

Cecily had her final twins since she rolled to have four children, these two make four. 

Thomasin had her youngest daughter Grace. 

Terric became a child and I think he looks quite a bit like his mother. 

Samuel married Aniyah and they happen to be third cousins, I feel like that’s far enough apart. The family tree branches are beginning to intertwine but in a small community that’s an inevitability. 

Sarah lost her third child shortly after her birth. 

Wilmot’s sons both got married and sadly Barnaby’s eldest child died. 

Benedict became a teenager though.
