7 Types of Photography Styles to Master

For novice and professional photographers alike, the number of technical and creative skills needed to take perfect shots can be overwhelming. Everything from capturing natural light and making good use of it with exposure variables and subject planning needs to be understood and perfected if we hope to become professional photographers or simply better at our craft. With so much to learn, how do we go about getting anywhere at all?

Well, by learning and practicing the seven different types of photography below, you can build a strong foundation for your photography career.

1. Street Photography

We’ll start with a form of photography that is accessible to most of us; street photography. This genre aims to capture everyday life as it happens and represent it in an artistic fashion.

First and foremost, street photography will help you hone your observation skills. You’ll be watching for small nuances that can take a photograph from a snapshot to a world-class image and you’ll be doing it on the fly. Street photographers are looking for light, moments, gestures, patterns, and juxtapositions to mention just a few things. Learning to see these things and make good use of them is paramount to street photography and can help you pay attention to these things in other types of photography as well.

2. Portrait Photography

One of the most common photography styles, portrait photography, or portraiture, aims to capture the personality and mood of an individual or group. Images may be candid or posed, full body or close-ups. Either way, the subject’s face and eyes are typically in focus. Lighting and backdrop help to convey tone and emotion. Popular types of photography portraits include senior portraits, family portraits, engagement photos, and professional headshots. The best portrait photographers make clients feel completely comfortable, so that their expressions are natural and relaxed.

3. Fashion Photography

Fashion photography showcases and glamorizes fashion clothing, shoes, and accessories to make them more desirable to consumers. It is commonly published in magazines and online. People may choose this niche over different types of photography because of the opportunity to be highly creative in making photographs eye-catching and appealing. Fashion photographers take a lot of full body shots and work in an array of locations, from fashion shows to studios with full lighting setups to city streets and open fields. They utilize many of the same skills as portrait photographers and must practice good teamwork and communication when working with shoot stylists, creative directors, and models.

4. Still Life Photography

Like it sounds, still life photography features inanimate objects—natural or manmade. Still life photography can be artistic or commercial. It is commonly used in stock photography as well as product advertising. (Think of the product images shown in catalogs, magazines, and billboards.) For still life photographers, object selection, arrangement, and lighting are key to getting a great shot.

5. Architectural Photography

Both the interior and exterior design of buildings and structures are the subject of architectural photography. From warehouses to city bridges to old country barns, this genre encompasses diverse structures. Often, the photograph showcases the structure’s most aesthetically pleasing parts, such as a particular beam or archway. Interesting materials and colors may also be emphasized. Lighting can be challenging in architectural photography and, for exteriors, photographers must know how to work with natural light. Gear such as a tilt-shift lens, a tripod, and a panorama head is often useful. Architectural photographs can be of value to designers, architects, leasing companies, and building investors.

6. Landscape Photography

Great landscape photographs transport the viewer to a time and place and give them a sense of what the photographer felt and saw.

Many of the important elements of landscape photography are often out of your control. How do we book you?

A $1500 retainer with a signed contract is required to book your date. 50% of your balance will be due ninety days before your event, with the balance due one month prior to your wedding.

Please know that dates book quickly, and we cannot hold dates without signed contracts and paid retainers. For this reason, dates are first-come, first-served!

Can we talk more? Can we customize a collection other than what we see here?

Absolutely. I’m available to meet in person at my studio in Brooklyn. We can also set up a FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom meeting if that’s easier for you and your schedule. We can also always hop on the phone and chat that way, if you prefer!

Collections are completely customizable. If you have a certain number of hours you need on your wedding day, a specific album (or multiple albums) that you want, and wish to create a unique collection you can absolutely do that. We’re here to make sure that your day is covered in the best way possible, and to provide you with the exact products you’d like to display those images later.

We don’t see videography on your price list. How much is that?

I am a still photographer only. Once you book with me, I will send you a list of videographers who work beautifully alongside me to create work with a similar feel in lighting, composition, storytelling, and client experience. It’s crucial that your photographer and videographer have a similar style and approach, and the companies that I refer are masters in their field!

Can we see galleries from weddings at our venue?

While I do share images on social media from most of the events I photograph, I do not open up all client galleries to the public. I take the privacy of my clients’ entire galleries very seriously, and therefore all galleries are not open for public view. I have curated a wide range of galleries for you to look through, and I hope these give you a deeper insight into my work and process.

Victor, Kamila, and Amanda are all incredible photographers. If you are interested in learning more about their rates, please let me know. Their coverage begins at $2,900 for six hours of photography

What is the difference between an assistant and a second photographer?

My assistant is with me at every wedding that I photograph. They help with parts of the day, such as aiding in getting family formal photographs together, helping keep the day organized, helping light parts of the reception, and more. They are accomplished photographers who also add their coverage of the day to key elements, most noticeably other angles on the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception.

A second photographer is a dedicated photographer only. Their only job is photography coverage of the day. Adding a second photographer is helpful if you’re getting ready in a completely separate location from your spouse, if your wedding is very large (over five hundred guests), if there are multiple religious ceremonies taking place at once, and so forth. Not sure if you need a second photographer? Just ask! I’d love to hear about your day and help you decide if another photographer is something you should add to your collection.

I know this is a thrilling time, but I also know that wedding planning can be incredibly complicated and time-consuming. For this reason, I’ve made my rates as simple as possible. You can stay simple, or build a collection to suit your needs. We’re here to help you do just that!

Last fall we met Janet and Mike and quickly realized how compatible they were. They love to goof around together… kind of like us. Going into Friday, we were pretty excited to spend the day with them again. We knew there would be some fun quirks (and there were). We knew there would be some new things (like our first Korean ceremony). What we didn’t know was how emotional it would be… particularly during the American ceremony.

We’re suckers for people that write their own vows and theirs were fantastic. Janet barely made it through her own… or Mike’s. All in all, it’s such a fun time shooting for these two. Here, see for yourself!

1800s Estate Proves History Is Anything But Drab

Steven Favreau is the type to go big - and go home.

When he set out to put down roots near his hometown of Boston, Favreau fell in love with an old country estate in quaint Chelsea, Vermont. It was the perfect place for this interior designer to escape from the hubbub of big city life after working with celebrity clients and more.

"It was a quintessential Vermont house in a quintessential Vermont town," said Favreau, about spotting the house in 2012. "I hopped on a plane and bought it the next week."

Built in 1832, the house was once owned by a man named Aaron Davis, whose family lived in it for at least 100 years. Davis' granddaughter eventually sold the 23-acre property in the 1980s, and the new owner converted it into a bed-and-breakfast. (There's still a portrait of Davis above one of the home's five fireplaces.)

After Favreau purchased the 5-bed, 5-bath home, he sought to restore it to its original grandeur - at a frenetic pace. A contractor brought in a crew to rework everything from the wiring (it was a fire waiting to happen) to the wallpaper (there were eight layers throughout the house). The workers even put in a massive new beam to support the house and keep it from sinking.

Up next on the designer’s list: keeping the look, feel and integrity of the antique touches, while updating the space to accommodate today's trends. He tore out a downstairs wall to expand the kitchen to 700 square feet; the master suite got a modern bath with a soaking tub.

Favreau painted walls in his signature bright colors and added bold wallpaper. He lined the master bathroom with tree-print wallpaper. The dining room got a splash of flamingo pink with a print of Victorian-looking cake plates - a nod to the era in which the house was built.

"What I wanted to use for inspiration was the house and the period of the house, so nodding to the period and updating it with a contemporary aesthetic," Favreau said. "It says today, but it also says yesterday."

Some things are distinctly New England. A wooden footbridge connects the main property to 22 secluded acres on the other side of the White River. On warm summer nights, Favreau’s family will pull a dining room table out onto the bridge and dine alfresco.

In the winter, the adjacent land allows for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.

There's also an old wood barn, which Favreau envisions becoming an event space for weddings or storage. The possibilities for the next owner are limitless, he said.

"It's a big glorious house, and my family is a big glorious family. We've enjoyed it," he added. "I feel like I've loved my time being there and up in Vermont, but it's time to find the next one. Maybe an oceanside property."

The home is on the market for $695,000. Zoe Hathorn Washburn of Snyder Donegan carries the listing.

I had never heard of Rosetta McClain Gardens until I moved to Toronto’s east end. This gorgeous park off of Kingston Road overlooks Lake Ontario from the top of the Scarborough Bluffs and features spectacularly groomed gardens, century-old pine trees and a dedicated rose garden. You’ll find numerous locations for engagement photos at Rosetta McClain Gardens including near their rock fountain, under the pergola or in the secluded gazebo. Although you can’t access Lake Ontario from these gardens, there is more than enough scenery in the park to provide a gorgeous backdrop for your engagement photos. The City of Toronto encourages you to book a photography session at City-owned parks to ensure you are not inhibiting the use of the park for others. Humber Bay Park East

Tucked away at the southern tip of Humber Bay Park is a secluded beach (well, if you get there early that is). Throughout the park, you’ll find long bridges, marshes and wild flowers, all with a 360 degree view of the water. In the eastern section of the park, you’ll be able to have a backdrop of the CN Tower and the city skyline with Lake Ontario in the foreground of your photo.

It’s amazing that more people in Toronto are not familiar with Allan Gardens Conservatory considering that it’s located in the centre of the city. The conservatory is open 365 days of the year and makes a great photography location for engagement photos in Toronto. There are numerous houses that form part of the conservatory including the Tropical Houses (orchids, begonias, bromeliads), Cool Temperate House (hyacinths, tulips, jasmines, camellias, plants from Australia), Arid House (cacti, succulents) and Tropical Landscape House (palms, bananas, seasonal plants). In addition, the Allan Gardens Conservatory hosts seasonal flower shows including the Easter Flower Show and Christmas Flower Show. You’ll also find unique locations for engagement photos or wedding photo shoots in front of the goldfish pond or the waterwheel where you may get photobombed by some sunning turtles! The Allan Gardens Conservatory is located at 19 Horticultural Avenue (at Gerrard Street East, east of Sherbourne Avenue), 416-392-7288. A photography permit is required.

If you are taking your engagement photos in summer, arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds on the beach. There are two beaches where you can take photos: Bluffers Park Beach and Bluffers Sand Beach. Bluffers Sand Beach is at the westerly section of Bluffers Park and features a magnificent backdrop of the Bluffs. You can also venture away from the beach to feature more of the rugged landscape in the backdrop of your photos. There are washrooms and snack bars on site.

Riverdale Farm is located at 201 Winchester Street. A photo permit is required.
