Body Modification
Social Media Usage
Social media platforms provide a variety of features and tools that enable users to connect, communicate, and engage with a wide range of online communities. Harriger et al. (2023, p.223) has stated that in the US, around 25% of TikTok users are between the ages of 10 and 19. Young adults heavily rely on social media platforms for communication and social interaction. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok provide avenues for connecting with friends, family, and peers, regardless of geographical distances. Social media allows them to maintain and strengthen relationships, share updates, and engage in conversations.Younger users may be more susceptible to the negative impacts of social media (Harriger et al. 2023, p.223)
Body Modification
Body modification refers to the deliberate alteration of one's physical appearance, typically involving changes to the body's anatomy or aesthetics. It is a broad term that encompasses a wide range of practices and techniques, each with its own cultural, artistic, personal, or symbolic significance. Why has body modification been rising in popularity? Popular culture, including celebrities, musicians, athletes, and influencers, often plays a significant role in shaping trends and norms. When influential figures embrace body modifications, it can inspire their followers to consider similar modifications. Media exposure and representation of body modifications contribute to their rising popularity. In order to advertise themselves and their goods, celebrities, models, influencers, fitness experts, and other attractive people who uphold idealized beauty standards also use social media. These accounts may have millions of followers and a substantial social media presence (Tiggemann 2022, p.143). Taking and choosing the photo to upload can take a lot of time and effort, with many women and girls reporting doing many takes to find the most attractive viewpoint and then further enhancing it with filters and digitally modifying it with photo-editing software (Tiggemann 2022, p.144). The concept of beauty and aesthetics has evolved over time. Body modifications can challenge traditional beauty standards and offer alternative forms of self-expression. As society becomes more inclusive and embraces diverse forms of beauty, individuals may be more inclined to pursue modifications that align with their own personal ideals.
For example, Barbie, as a popular cultural icon and influential toy, has been criticized for potentially contributing to body image issues and unrealistic beauty standards. While Barbie dolls themselves do not represent body modifications, they have been accused of promoting a narrow and unrealistic ideal of beauty due to their traditionally slim figures, large eyes, and other exaggerated features. Mcnamara (2016) has stated that Barbie's bizarre and exaggerated body proportions do in fact distort young girls' conceptions of what a body should look like. The influence of Barbie on body modification is subjective and varies from person to person. While some individuals may have been inspired to pursue body modifications as a way to emulate the doll's appearance, others may have developed a critical perspective on narrow beauty standards and chosen body modifications as an expression of personal identity and individuality.
In conclusion, there are benefits and drawbacks to how omnipresent social media and popular culture are in our lives. While offering us countless opportunities for engagement and self-expression, these platforms also expose us to a steady stream of idealized and altered images.

Barbie's New Doll Celebrates APIA Heritage Month - and It Honors a Hollywood Trailblazer
Image Sources: Mattel and Photo Illustration: Ava Cruz A week after releasing its first Barbie doll with Down syndrome, Mattel has unveiled an Anna May Wong Barbie for Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month. Anna May Wong, who passed away in February 1961, was a Hollywood trailblazer. She's widely considered to be the first Chinese American Hollywood film star, and her acting earned her international recognition. She became known for portraying Chinese Americans in a positive and accurate light during periods of widespread and dangerous prejudice. While many depictions of Chinese characters in US films at the time were discriminatory and racist - and many times played by non-Chinese actors in yellowface - Wong's characters often offered positive and nonstereotypical representation. She even turned down roles she felt were negative or unsympathetic. She was also the first Asian American woman to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for acting, in 1960. The Anna May Wong Barbie, which is part of Mattel's "Inspiring Women" series, is based on her role in "Limehouse Blues," a movie from 1934. The doll is dressed in a red gown and has Wong's signature bangs. The depiction was approved by Anna Wong, Wong's niece, who worked closely with Mattel to develop the doll, according to a statement provided by the brand. While a doll may seem like a small step, there's tremendous value in offering children the chance to play with a Barbie that looks like them. "Seeing is believing, and Anna May Wong's courage and perseverance allowed generations of Asian Americans to see themselves on screen outside of stereotypes and typecasts," Mattel wrote in an Instagram caption of the post revealing the new doll. Mattel has released Asian Barbie dolls before, but in 2021, the company was criticized for failing to include a Barbie who appeared to be Asian in its lineup of Olympic Barbie dolls, according to NBC News. The Barbie Signature Anna May Wong Doll is currently available for preorder at Walmart ($35); it's also being sold at Target ($35) and Mattel Creations ($35), but the preorders have sold out. Whisky Secrets (sequel)
Here's something different. Before I ever thought about posting fanfic here, I used to write things inspired by fanfic I found by some of the incredible writers I found on tumblr. I've never posted any of them but I've really felt like writing something for Aleister Black/ Tommy End lately.
So I reached out to one of my original favourites on this site, @ghostofviperwrites and asked her if she'd mind if I published this sequel I wrote to her story Whisky Secrets. She gave me the ok (for which I thank her very much).
You absolutely have to read her piece first or this won't make any sense. It picks up literally at the point where hers leaves off and the entire premise is based on what she wrote. I think this goes in a very different direction than what she had in mind, though.
Since this is an old story, some of the characters are very different than they are now. It was set at around the time I wrote it. Based on events in the story, it's pretty clear when that was.
It's a bit dated but I hope you enjoy.
Pairing: Aleister Black x OFC (hints of Roman Reigns x OFC)
Word count: 7,031
Content advisory: graphic sexual content, language, incidental roughness that some might find stressful
You rested on the sofa for too long, knowing that you had to get to work, that you were already behind on an assignment that was due that afternoon. As much as you desperately wanted to cling to the scent and the feeling of him being there with you and the idea that he might someday want to be there with you for longer, you knew that you were only wasting time by indulging in a fantasy. Once again, you reminded yourself, he saw you as a friend, a landing pad after he was finished his adventures. And so you dragged yourself to the computer and tried to focus.
It was a fluff piece you’d been hired to write: places for new residents of Orlando to meet people. You’d accepted it because the pay was good and it had seemed easy. But what the hell did you know about meeting people? You’d barely met anyone and the only ones that you’d call friends were the ones you met when you’d done an in-depth profile on the WWE and their development territory NXT. Of those, only Aleister had remained close and even then, you couldn’t say that the two of you had ever properly opened up to each other. Nevertheless, you’d stayed in touch with a number of them, occasionally meeting for coffee or drinks. None of this was in any way useful when it came to recommending locations to connect with strangers.
You’d tried to start the article the day before but now when you opened the file, you discovered that you’d only come up with a half a dozen corny titles and one word of text:
When?
The word was too painfully appropriate.
When were you going to run out of luck and be unable to find further work as a journalist?
When were you going to admit that what kept you here, rather than moving to another state and pursuing more secure work, was the fact that you were in love with a man who was only interested in your capacity as a friend and caregiver?
When was your hopeless love going to break you beyond repair?
Annoyed with yourself, you deleted the word and tried to start again. You could meet people at the gym classes that were ubiquitous in this city. You could meet people at get-togethers for shared hobbies like hiking or pottery or basically anything. No one had to meet people by getting thrown into their orbit and being unable to extricate themselves.
About half an hour into your resentful hammering on the keyboard, you were startled by your doorbell. For one sweet instant, you imagined that it was Aleister dropping by to pass some time with you. Then you realized that he never came to you without an invitation unless it was dead drunk in the middle of the night. Even when you invited him, it was only every fourth or fifth time that you asked that he agreed to come over and watch a movie or go for a walk in the nearby park. There was no way it was him at your door at eleven o’clock in the morning.
In fact, the person at your door was Bayley, chipper and warm as always, returning the spare laptop you’d lent her a few weeks before.
“Thank you so much,” she beamed, thrusting the computer into your hands. “You are a lifesaver. I’d have lost my goddamn mind if I hadn’t had this while mine was in the shop.”
“It was nothing,” you insist, smiling at her unconstrained warmth even though you didn’t feel very positive about your life at that moment. “Do you want to come in for a minute?”
She nodded cheerily and stepped across the foyer. You never really knew how you fit in with the women of WWE, even though you’d spoken to many of them in depth. Bayley stood out because she was determined to be your friend despite your introvert’s reluctance. And, indeed, she was irresistible. Much like her in-ring character, she cast sunshine wherever she went and her glow was contagious, even in your darkest and lowest moments.
You motioned her into the kitchen, offering her a choice of lemonade, iced tea or water. Her eyes immediately fell on the empty whiskey bottle you’d left on the counter, her expression growing more serious as she focused on it.
“Getting started early?” she cajoled.
“A friend left that here,” you replied guiltily.
She narrowed her dark eyes as she looked at you. Sweet and optimistic as she was, Bayley was not naïve. She knew exactly what friend had left the bottle behind and she knew how you felt about him.
“I’ll have a glass of lemonade,” she said, the smile slowly returning to her face.
You joined her and the two of you jokingly touched glasses before drinking.
“So, a few of us are getting together tonight,” she said hesitantly. “I thought you might like to join us.”
Your first instinct was to ask if Aleister would be there, but you thought better of it. Instead, you responded, “Well, I have an article I need to finish.”
Of course, your article was due by the end of the afternoon, which meant that your evening was free regardless, but part of you wanted to be at home in case Aleister came staggering over again.
Bayley’s jaw set in a determined expression you’d only seen from her in the ring. “We’re having a party for Roman, to celebrate him going into remission.”
Well now you felt like a bit of a bitch for making excuses and didn’t know what to say.
“It won’t just be wrestlers there. Some other journalists are even coming. And I know that it would mean a lot to him if you were there.”
When you’d done your article on the WWE, you’d interviewed Roman Reigns and he’d been incredibly generous with his time. He’d even contacted you after your interviews to confirm that you had all the detail you needed. He was the face of the company and had done everything possible to make sure that the company had provided what you required. He’d clearly wanted to make sure they’d left a good impression and you couldn’t help but be impressed by his PR skills. Although you knew it wasn’t true that it “would mean a lot to him”, you were touched by the idea that he remembered you and might like you to be there to celebrate his great news. At the same time… you needed to be there for Aleister.
“Look,” Bayley insisted, “I’m going to text you the details for the bar where we’ll be. It’s not a big deal, just a bunch of us getting together to be happy for our friend.”
There was no way that you could refuse that, so you shyly thanked her as she gulped the rest of her lemonade and made for the door.
“I’m serious,” she said as she departed. “You work so damn hard you deserve a night off. Finish what you’re doing and come have fun with us.”
As soon as she’d left, you once again sat down at your computer. Before you could return your attention to your work, however, you couldn’t resist checking Instagram.
Someone had tagged Aleister in a photo on Instagram.
Yes, you were that pathetic that you always checked.
With trepidation, you clicked the link to look at what was there. As it too often did, the notification came from an airbrushed-looking woman, her collagen-enhanced lips pressed against his. She looked arrogant and proud, while he looked smug and inebriated.
“Guess who I got to hang with last night?” the caption gloated.
You knew damn well what “hang” was a euphemism for. He never cared that the Barbie dolls he hooked up with advertised their conquest on social media. He was single and hot. Why should he care if people knew that he always scored with the sort of women other men lusted after? Why should he care that it ripped your heart to shreds every time you saw him with another woman so unlike you in every way?
The woman had posted a few other photos of the two of them together, embracing. Every part of her magazine-ready body was on display, save those parts that would have gotten her in trouble. Her artificially perfect breasts were spilling out of a tiny tube top while her endless legs were shown in their full glory between the edge of a skirt that likely required her to trim her pubic hair and the sky high heels that raised her enough to press her lips to his without having to stretch herself awkwardly. She was nothing like you, with your unkempt hair and loose, bohemian dresses, your comfortable ballet flats and blandly natural face. She had all the glamour that you lacked and he ate it up.
The images of the two of them cut into you like a laser and, for once, all you desired was to break free from the pain of feeling. A few minutes later, when Bayley sent the text she’d promised with the details of where you could find the party tonight, you immediately responded.
“I’ll be there. I promise.”
To hell with Aleister and the designer women he adored, you told yourself as you returned to your article with a vengeance. Tonight you were going to do whatever it took to break the spell he had cast over you.
*
It was just after nine when you found yourself teetering to the entrance of the bar where the party was taking place. It was marked only by a subtle sign, no words, just a stylized anchor, and it was hidden away on a tiny street that was hardly more than an alley. In your fit of pique, you’d finished your article two hours before your deadline and then, having examined the options in your closet and found them wanting, headed out and spent entirely too much money on a new dress that clung perfectly to your breasts before flaring out to highlight the movements of your body, while covering just the bare minimum to maintain decency. You’d also picked up a stylish pair of ankle boots with heels higher than you were used to and that posed a legitimate threat as you made your way down the roughly paved road to the speakeasy-style bar.
A little further down the alley, you see a couple leaning against a car, taking turns swigging from a liquor bottle. The woman is one of those glamorous animals that makes you so insecure, laughing in drunken delight in a way that only confident people can. In one quick movement the man spins her around and bends her over the hood of the car. He immediately takes out his cock, stroking it a couple of times before he thrusts into her, one hand on her back while the other holds the bottle that he continues drinking from. And it’s a moment before you realize that it’s Aleister, fucking away at a woman whose name he won’t remember in a few hours.
The sight makes you want to curl up and die, makes you want to say that you’ve made a mistake and run along home so you can bawl your eyes out while you wait for his inevitable drunken arrival. But, if nothing else, the damage that you’ve done to your credit card in order to make yourself look just a bit more sexy and edgy than usual, as well as the glasses of wine you had already consumed to fortify your courage, push you forward. This is a test. In order to pass, you need to be able to ignore the man whose indifference is killing you and enter the world of others, where someone who wasn’t up to the standards of the rarified model girls might be willing to give you a second look.
Aleister doesn’t even glance up as you enter the bar a few feet away from him, can’t feel the dark weight of your eyes on him or the force with which you tear them away as you step through the door.
As soon as you do, you are once again frozen with the idea that you’ve made a mistake. When Bayley characterized this as a “get-together”, you’d assumed it meant a group of people spread out around a few tables chatting away and toasting Roman’s health. Instead, what greets you is a basement club full of people with a dance floor alive with writhing bodies. You recognize a few journalists but for the most part, the space is taken up with every WWE and NXT star you’ve ever heard of. It’s a convention of beautiful people and you can’t help but feel dowdy even in your overpriced finery.
You slowly descend the stairs, fully intending to look around, say hello to a few familiar faces and then bolt for the exit, but you’re immediately greeted by a familiar voice that fairly shrieks. “Oh my god woman, just look at you!”
It’s Sasha Banks, standing at the edge of the stairs with Bayley, who gives you an exaggerated round of applause.
“Miranda, you look amazing,” Sasha continues breathlessly. “Seriously, you’re putting everyone to shame.”
You don’t feel like you’re putting anyone to shame, least of all Sasha in her body suit that hugs every curve of her perfect little hourglass, but you blush at the compliment.
“Come on,” Bayley gushes, “we need shots to celebrate your hotness!”
She pulls both of you through the crowd to the bar and somehow is able to get the bartender’s attention almost immediately, ordering two rounds of tequila shots because, she tells you and Sasha, there’s no point in getting just one round when you know you’re going back for seconds. The three of you toast and toss down the shots and then immediately do so again and you have to admit that you’re feeling the warm glow already. Sasha, apparently feeling something herself, wraps her arms around you and once again reassures you that you are devastatingly beautiful.
Another shot is thrust into your hand, this time by Dash Wilder, who’s arrived with his Revival partner Scott Dawson. Wilder has always been attractive to you, so you give him as radiant a smile as you can manage and you swear he blushes a little just before he downs his shot. Dawson is hugging Sasha and Bayley close to him, allowing Dash to edge a little closer to you and you’re feeling a little high on yourself when another voice cuts through your circle.
“Miranda? Holy fuck I can’t believe you’re here!”
Roman Reigns pushes right through the bodies close to the bar and grabs you firmly by the shoulders, his eyes gradually focusing on yours. He’s grinning with an intensity that clearly comes from his being a little past feeling no pain but it doesn’t hamper the thrill it gives you when he wraps his arms around you and nearly crushes you in a hug.
“I mean, shit, I don’t think I’ve even talked to you since you did that interview,” he pouts. “Thank you so much for coming.”
You smile as another shot is pushed into your hand, biting your lip self-consciously. You down about half the shot before Roman grabs it from you and finishes it, breaking up with laughter. He signals the bartender for another round, keeping an arm around your back until the tray of shots arrives. You’re all toasting each other and you wonder why you ever questioned yourself for coming here because this is exactly what you needed.
“Come dance with me,” Roman chuckles, grabbing your wrist and pulling you towards the dance floor. He’s clearly floating on a sea of drunken bliss, goofing around and happy to have someone to have fun with, someone he didn’t expect to be there. Even if you wanted to resist his offer, you couldn’t because, while he isn’t doing anything that might hurt you, his grip is strong enough and the rest of him powerful enough to compel you forward.
The two of you deliberately dance like complete nerds in high school, awkward movements and ironic posturing until you’re both laughing so hard you can barely stand. It’s then that you realize that you’ve become the focus of some attention; Roman goddamn Reigns, the face of the company, the locker room leader, the man who everyone has come to celebrate, is dancing with you. Most of the people here have no idea who you are but because you’re with Roman, you are somebody. Basking in the subtle attention and envy, you close your eyes and allow yourself to get lost in the music, swaying to the beat until you feel a large pair of hands on your hips.
You open your eyes to see Roman pulling you closer to him with a devilish grin before spinning you around and pulling your back against his massive chest. You continue to move but at a slower pace, your movements limited by how close he’s holding you and the sensual way in which his body moves against yours. Keeping one arm loosely around you, he lets his other hand fall against your thigh, lightly playing with the hem of your dress. It makes you gasp.
“You never responded to any of my texts,” he murmurs gruffly in your ear.
You remember at least half a dozen messages asking if he could clarify anything or if you needed any additional material for your article. You hadn’t needed anything else but you suddenly feel terribly rude for not answering.
“I’m sorry,” you whisper, “you were very professional and I should have at least told you that I had what I needed.”
His voice drops even lower as he speaks. “I didn’t mean to be professional about them. And I was hoping that you didn’t have everything you needed.”
He pulls you up and firmly against him and for the first time you can feel his hardening cock through his pants. You can’t help but thrust your hips into him, barely able to process what’s happening to you. The two of you are still ostensibly dancing, although it’s more like a rhythmic grinding to the music as he reaches down and pulls the hem of your dress up, rubbing your thigh and then your ass as he presses his lips into your neck. His hands are everywhere on you and you’re aware that your entire lower body is basically on display for anyone who cares to look but you don’t care because it feels like you’ve won the lottery. You moan at the feeling of his growing excitement against your flesh, both his large hands grazing up the front of your thighs and for a moment you think that you’re ready to beg him to take you right there when you’re violently spun away from your dance partner, a bruising grip on your arm.
It’s Aleister, eyes incandescent with rage as he tells Roman, “I need to speak to her for a minute.”
Roman looks confused and tries to speak to you but Aleister drags you away and a gaggle of women immediately descend on Roman, desperate to take your place.
Aleister flings you against the wall, glaring at you with an intensity that you’ve never seen outside the ring.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he growls.
“I was dancing before you interfered,” you snap back at him, rubbing your arm.
“Dancing?” he repeats with derision. “That’s what you call that?”
“I was having fun.”
“What the hell are you wearing?”
For the first time since you saw him with his woman of choice outside, you feel ridiculous, like a girl trying to look glamorous by donning her mother’s clothes.
“I wanted something a little different.”
“A little?” he hisses back. “Do you realize what you look like? You’re all tarted up and letting some guy grab at you and get you half naked in front of a bar full of people.”
“What I look like?”
“Everyone could see practically your whole goddamned body. They could see what you were letting him do to you.”
“You mean to say I look like a whore.”
Aleister crosses his arms and glances away, refusing to confirm what you’ve said.
“So what, Aleister? So what if I’m letting a man touch me and show me that he wants me? Who cares who else sees? Maybe that’s what I want!”
“Are you so stupid that you think he wants you for anything other than a one night stand?”
The accusation stabs at your heart and your confidence but you’re determined not to let him see that.
“Again, so what? Maybe I’m happy to have this big, gorgeous man want me. Maybe I’m fine bringing him back to my place for a few hours of fun because at least it means someone is thinking of me as a sexual being for a change.” You pause, knowing the danger of what you’re about to say but unable to stop yourself. “Maybe I’d be fine if he just took me outside and fucked me over the hood of a car.”
For a second, you think that Aleister is going to strangle you. The look on his face is like the moment before the sky erupts in thunder and lightning. Truthfully, you expect that he’ll turn on his heel and walk away from you and never come back, and perhaps that’s what you need him to do so that you can get over him.
Instead, he grabs you, pinning you to the side of his body and pulling you towards the door. His movements make you stumble, and the more you try to resist him, the more ungainly you look.
“She’s dead drunk,” you hear him assure a few people, “I’m going to make sure she gets home.”
And while it’s true that you are drunk, you’re not nearly as drunk as he’s making you out to be. The second he has you outside, you try to twist away from him and go back, only for him to wind you closer, pulling you off balance so that you look even more inebriated.
You hear him whisper to Seth Rollins, who’s observing the spectacle through the corner of his eyes. “Look, tell Roman that she’s falling down drunk and I just had to get her home. No disrespect meant.”
Seth has a confused expression on his face but nods and tells him, “Sure thing.”
Realizing what Aleister is doing, you once again try to rush past him, but he blocks you, gripping your arm and pulling you after him so that you really do appear pathetically unable to take care of yourself.
“Why the fuck are you doing this to me?” you shout at him, figuring that there’s no reason to worry about who might hear you, there being no further you can sink in their estimation. “Why can’t you just let me enjoy myself?”
“Jesus, Miranda, you’re loaded. You can barely stand up.” He emphasizes this by jerking your arm forward, which almost causes you to keel over onto your face. “You’re just embarrassing yourself.”
“No,” you insist, pulling yourself to a halt. “I knew what I was doing. I knew what I wanted. Sure I’m a bit tipsy but-“
“You don’t want that,” Alesiter snaps, threading his arm through yours and continuing down the street. “You don’t just want to whore yourself out for a night because you think it might help your self-esteem.”
“You don’t get to decide what I want, Aleister.” You’re crushed against his side and he’s moving so quickly that your feet only graze the ground every third or fourth step. “Let me go. I’m sick of playing the surrogate mother for someone who’s incapable of seeing me as a real woman. I want to go back there. I want to have someone make a show of wanting me. I want to get fucked so hard I can’t walk tomorrow.”
Aleister shakes his head like a parent frustrated with a misbehaving child. “Stop it. You’re being ridiculous.”
“So let me be ridiculous!” you yell back, trying unsuccessfully to extricate yourself from his grip. “What the hell is it to you? Are you worried that for once I’m not going to be there when you need a place to collapse at four in the morning?”
The two of you reach the corner where the alley meets the street and he swings you to face him, glowering at you with a terrifying expression, gripping your biceps so hard you know you’ll be bruised in the morning. He says nothing but stares at you until he whips his arm out and hails a taxi seemingly out of nowhere.
He launches you, there’s no other word for it, into the back seat of the car and snarls your address to the driver as your tears start to fall. The cabbie is noticeably uncomfortable with your quiet whimpering and seems confused by the fact that Aleister does nothing to comfort or engage you. He sits with his arms folded, scowling, until you arrive at your building. Reflexively, you reach for your purse only to have Aleister swat your hand away and pay the driver himself. You try to keep pace as he yanks you towards the door, but stumble because of your unsure footing in these strange heels and because your vision is glazed by the tears you’re fighting to hold in.
When Aleister pins you against the door and rummages through your purse to find your keys, it somehow feels more invasive than Roman gripping your ass for an entire bar full of people to see. You feel, for a moment, that he is looking at you with tenderness. But when the door opens, he simply guides you through it. As you hear it click shut, the last of your strength, physical and emotional, gives out and you drop to your knees, finally allowing the tears to fall. It’s a full-on ugly cry, punctuated by guttural, anguished sounds you’d never allow anyone else to hear. Despite everything, you desperately want to hear the door open again behind you and to hear him say that he’s realized he loves you.
But no, in the end, he’s just found it gross that the woman he sees as his caregiver might have another side. He found you pathetic in your overpriced dress and shoes. He knew that you were desperately trying to act like something you could never be: like someone who could compete with the perfected Instagram beauties he fucks every night. You could never be that. He knew that you were just a sad little woman decked out in a gaudy outfit. You’d never be that sexy, desirable person who stopped men dead in their tracks, no matter what your dance with Roman had temporarily led you to believe.
You’re on your knees for what seems like hours, choking on tears and snot and trying to restrain yourself from howling. Just as the sound overpowers you and a low wail escapes your lips, you’re startled by a pair of arms, familiar, tattooed arms wrapping around your waist from behind.
“Shh. There’s no need for any of that,” he grunts into your hair.
And while you’re shocked and thrilled that he actually stayed behind to make sure that you were ok, it’s also even more humiliating that he’s seen you fall apart so spectacularly. Your body feels limp with defeat and unable to react at all as he gathers you up and carries you into your bedroom, setting you gently on the edge of the bed. He rests his hand on yours for a moment and you’re able to stem the flow of tears until he stands up and heads back towards the door. This time, you’re determined to hold in the worst of your misery until you’re sure he’s gone, even though you can’t stop the tears from running down your face.
But after a few minutes of straining to hear the door close, you see Aleister return, a damp washcloth in hand, and he sits once again beside you on the edge of the bed. He presses the cloth, cool and soothing, against your cheeks and then holds your chin as he delicately wipes it across your face. It takes you some minutes to realize that he’s removing your smeared makeup, cleaning you off so that you look good as new, so that you look more like the plain girl who lets him into her home in the middle of the night, his touch filled with a tenderness that you never imagined him capable of. When he’s satisfied with his work, he tosses the cloth aside and wraps an arm around you, pulling you close against him. The sweetness of his friendly gesture makes you want to cry all over again but you choke it back, knowing that you’ll have plenty of time for that when he’s gone.
“Can I stay here tonight?” he whispers, the sound of his voice making you feel weak.
You nod and roughly pull back from him, unsure of your ability to stop yourself from throwing yourself at him and begging him to wreck you. You fumble with the zipper of your boots until Aleister slides off the bed and onto his knees and removes it for you. He glides his hand along your calf, up to your thigh and then moves to your other boot. As he slides it off, he presses his head against the side of your knee, giving the skin a light kiss before rocking back on his haunches. You know he’s being gentle with you because he feels sorry for you. He finds you pitiful, which is even worse than finding you asexual.
The feelings are too much for you to take and all you can think of is that you want to get into bed where you’ll be safe and where you can sleep off the nightmare your evening out has become. You clumsily shed your dress, stockings, bra and panties without thinking much of the fact that you have an audience. Why should it bother him seeing you naked, after all? Normally, you put on some nightclothes but you don’t even have the strength to bother. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see that Aleister has turned his head towards the door. He’s embarrassed for you, the way you would be if a parent or sibling was undressing around you.
You crawl under the covers with a grumbled “good night” and immediately start to feel yourself drift off. You’re jolted back to wakefulness when Aleister climbs in beside you. In all the time you’ve known him, as many nights as he’s come and collapsed on your sofa, you don’t think he’s ever seen your bedroom. Now, having seen it, he’s apparently happy not to leave it, indulging in the comfort of your bed without even asking permission. It makes you a little self-conscious that you’re nude but it’s hardly the most humiliating thing to happen to you tonight, so you let yourself ignore it. If you can just fall asleep, this night will be over and you can begin the process of trying to forget it.
It’s only a matter of seconds, though, until you feel his body pressed against yours from behind, one hand coming to rest flat on your stomach and pushing you back against him so that you are acutely aware that you are not the only person naked in the bed. The hand on your stomach flutters downward until his fingers are moving lightly over your pussy, like he’s plucking the strings of a harp. His other arm wraps around your shoulders and keeps you flush against him, close enough that you can’t mistake the feeling of his erection against your back.
He presses his lips and tongue against your neck, making you whimper as you try to keep your heart rate stable. Your little noises seem to motivate him further, his touch becoming more insistent and one of his legs snaking over yours, pulling it back to give his hand greater access.
“Such a little fool,” he murmurs, his fingers stroking insistently along your fleshy folds. “Thinking I don’t see you as a sexual being.”
He sinks his teeth into your shoulder, making you cry out- more from the shock than the pain. His mouth continues to move around your neck and shoulders, nipping and sucking on the skin there, his grip on you tightening until it’s nearly painful.
“What are you doing?” you manage to ask.
“Leaving marks,” he says matter-of-factly.
You’re at a loss for what to say, but are saved from having to answer as he pushes two fingers inside you, his thumb rubbing slow circles over your clit. You’re embarrassed that he must have felt how wet you were just from being in his presence but he says nothing, quickening his pace and giving satisfied little growls when his touch elicits gasps and cries of pleasure from you.
It’s pity, you remind yourself; what he’s doing to you, he’s doing it because he feels sorry for you and because he’s drunk and horny despite his encounter earlier in the evening. But the thought gets whisked away as he brings you closer and closer to what you’ve desperately needed from him for so long. You let out a little shriek when he removes his hand, unable to believe he’s so cruel as to bring you to the precipice and then deny you. But he simply flips you onto your back before pressing his fingers inside you once more, watching your reactions to be sure he’s hitting just the right spot before burying his face between your legs. His tongue, lips and fingers work together like an orchestra. Your knuckles are white from the force of clenching on the sheets and you’re biting down so hard on your lip to muffle the sounds you’re making that you’re worried your teeth will end up permanently embedded. He unexpectedly raises his head and stills the movement of his hand inside you and the shock is almost enough to make you start crying again. You look down at him, his eyes sparkling in the low light with an expression you can’t read.
“Why won’t you let me hear you?”
Because you don’t want him to know how good his merciful little gesture is making you feel. Because you don’t want to admit to yourself that it’s better than you’d imagined. Truthfully, whenever you’ve thought about the mechanics of sex with Aleister, you imagined that it would be fast and rough and hedonistic, much like his other sexual encounters seem to be. But he’s chosen this moment to take his time, to focus on his partner, rather than go for a quick, dirty fuck in a darkened corner.
You don’t tell him any of this, instead croaking out, “I’m shy.”
He raises himself up and over your body with the effortless grace of a serpent, pressing his head close to yours and kissing along your jawline.
“What do I have to do to make you not be shy?”
“I don’t know… I just… am.” You wriggle a little under him, turning your face away when he looks directly into your eyes.
He cups your face in one hand and runs the other, still wet with your juices, over your breast, teasing the nipple and making you shudder involuntarily.
“Am I moving too fast?”
You shake your head, not quite trusting your voice.
“Is there something that you’d enjoy more? Something you want me to do for you?”
You give him another little shake of the head.
“You don’t have to be shy with me. Whatever you want, I want you to tell me so I can give it to you. Anything.”
For the first time, he kisses you on the lips, his tongue, that still tastes of you, slides against yours and the hand at the side of your face slides to hold your neck, cradling your head so that you don’t have to tense any muscles to stay in that position. Your body has nothing it needs to do but experience the sensations he’s creating. Of course, you still answer his kiss, hungrily flashing your tongue against his, reveling in the light scrape of his lip ring against your lips. His hand glides back down between your legs, and even the proximity is enough to draw a couple of little mewls of pleasure. You feel him smile a little against your lips at the noises and he pulls away from the kiss.
“Am I making you feel good?”
You nod as he starts to work his fingers around your entrance once again.
“Do you want my mouth down there again?”
You nod even more vigorously than the first time but he shakes his head.
“Tell me. Say it out loud.”
You open your mouth to do so and he immediately thrusts his long fingers into your g-spot and your clit at once, making you yelp in pleasure. It’s almost enough to make you cum on its own but he eases the pressure before you reach that peak.
“Yes?” he asks again.
“Yes, fuck, yes!”
“Then let me hear you. Please.”
He returns his attention to your core and has you making all manner of unholy noises in short order. He expertly teases you and then holds back, so many times that when he does finally take you over the edge, you feel like you might pass out from the intensity of it. Your gasps for breath sound cavernous in the quiet room.
He keeps the palm of his hand firmly against you as he leans forward and presses his lips into your neck, letting out a satisfied purr every time an aftershock rolls through your body.
When he’s satisfied that you’ve fully come down, he raises himself up on his arms, giving just the hint of a smile when you grab onto his biceps to steady yourself.
He’s so rigid that he doesn’t even need a hand to guide himself into you. He simply presses forward in one slow but sure moment, his eyes closed as if it’s a kind of religious experience, not opening them until he’s fully seated inside you. It’s been long enough since you’ve been with anyone that the feeling of being stretched draws a little whimper from your throat. He remains still, his eyes open and bearing down on you with a delirious kind of excitement, aching prick twitching inside you, desperate to proceed but waiting for a signal that he can.
And it’s at that moment that you allow yourself to think that this isn’t pity or a drunken mistake, that he’s as hungry for you as you have been for him and that what’s happened tonight has just served to connect a circuit. The fiercely possessive look in his eyes as he watches you, the fury when he thought someone else was claiming you, the need to mark you to make you his, the flush of pure lust on his face and chest… it is just a little frightening, something you suspected was in him but never that it was focused on you. But you’ve always known you could handle his darkness if he let you in. So you thrust your hips a little and wrap your legs loosely around his waist to show him that he can continue. Just as he starts to move, he cups your face and presses his mouth to your ear.
“You deserve so much better.”
“Stop trying to make those decisions for me,” you moan, feeling your insides flutter with his movements.
“I’ve never felt anything like that jealousy.” He’s staring into your eyes as he confesses. He lifts one of your legs over his shoulder pressing deeper inside you and gasping at the feeling. “Knowing that everyone could see how sexy and beautiful you are… And I’m an idiot for waiting for that to happen before I did anything, I just…”
He grimaces and slows his pace a little, obviously trying to prolong the sensation.
“You mean it?” You have to ask because you still can’t quite believe that this has been on his mind for all this time when he’s shown no sign of it to you.
“God yes,” he answers through gritted teeth, once again allowing himself to move faster and more urgently.
You can’t completely banish your fears that he’s going to regret this in the morning and just shut you out again but every second with him is pushing them further away. You lace your fingers through his hair, nipping at the shell of his ear as he lets out his own stream of desperate, lusty noises, running your nails gently down his back as he approaches his crescendo.
His head drops to your chest and he cries out as he releases inside you.
“Fuck I love you, fuck I love you, fuck I love you.” He repeats it like a mantra that brings him back down from his high, saying it a final time as he looks into your eyes.
Slowly, he rolls onto his side, gathering you close to him like he thinks an errant breeze might carry you away.
“I have…” he begins quietly, “… there’s a lot that goes on in my head… Bad things, I guess. I thought you’d run away. Or that I’d pull you down with me. I still don’t know that won’t happen.”
He looks so vulnerable that it makes your heart hurt but at the same time you have to stifle a smile.
“Well I’d rather you let me try to deal with it. I’m a lot tougher than you give me credit for being.”
His expression grows a little guilty and he nods. He wraps his arms tighter around you and you do the same until the two of you are lying in your bed, wound around each other.

i want this bitch's life: my obsession with lifestyle bloggers
Full disclosure: I took this title from The Cut's series, I Like This Bitch's Life.
My high school was all-girls and Catholic. Throughout my freshman year, I was fixated on a group of senior girls. People called them The Barbies or The Tan Clan. Most of them were blonde. But they were all tan and beautiful. Even in school uniforms, they were fashion forward. They had UGG boots before I knew what they were. On free dress days, they sported Juicy Couture sweat suits before anyone else. They were so beautiful. They didn’t wear make up and their hair was always in a perfect messy bun. All of which just impressed upon me how much more beautiful they were.
I loved them. Quietly and from afar. I could not tell my friends because a lot of them were their sisters or knew them from grade school. They did not share my infatuation. I found out their screen names and looked at their AIM profile. I stared at them when I passed them down the hall, taking note of their new handbags. They were so perfect. I wanted to be them.
Flash forward to 2015. I joined Instagram, late to the game, and did not really understand how to use it until late 2016. This is when I found lifestyle bloggers. It took me awhile to understand who these women were. I started following them because one of their beautiful photos was recommended to me.
At first, I didn’t get it. But I slowly started to realize these women were a part of an elusive club, much like my Tan Clan. But instead of seeing them in the cafeteria, I watch their lives through a series of high quality photos of their perfect kids, gorgeous homes, exquisite outfits, and an unbelievable amount of beautiful travel. Supplemented with the periodic #ad post.
I follow about two dozen women, who identify as lifestyle bloggers. The term lifestyle blogger is ambiguous and almost anyone with a blog can identify as one. But who I am talking about today are the women with followers amounting somewhere between half a million to over one million. They post perfectly curated photos of their daily life: their families, vacations, outfits, and other things that are mostly mundane from anyone else.
They are all different and I’m not here to make any generalizations about all women bloggers or lifestyle bloggers. For the most part, they grew their strong following by starting as something more specific, i.e. hairstyle tips, mommy life, or photos of their toddler take naps with their new puppy went viral. But they’ve all evolved.
When I’m in bed late at night, I stare at their gorgeous photos on Instagram, long after I’ve double tapped. Most often their posts feature themselves. The women are always white, beautiful, thin, and have perfect skin. When they show off a new outfit, it always looks good on them and I always like it – even if it is not my style. I find myself admiring their fit bodies in bikinis, then I look to my right at my night stand and see my glass of wine and the clean plate from whatever I just binge ate.
They are always married. The younger ones are engaged. Their husbands are always very handsome. If I have found out their husband’s profession, it is always a professional and prestigious job, like finance or doctor. When I find this out, I take a big gulp of my wine thinking about how the only men who seem interested in me quit college because he “makes so much money at his serving job/selling weed”.
Usually they have kids, if not, they will soon. And their kids are gorgeous. Blonde and tan babies in diapers at the beach. I don’t even want kids but this shit is freaking cute. The aesthetic is too much to hate.
Something else they all have in common: they travel a lot. Weekend trips to Hawaii with their husband and three kids. Two weeks in Australia with the whole fam. Couples getaway to Paris. Japan. Europe. Jamaica. They can afford to go anywhere. I have traveled a lot the past couple years, so I don’t know want to sound like I am bitter and jealous because I’m not. I want them to travel – travel more, please! I want to see more photos. I love gazing at their family photos, they look so happy. The scenery is beautiful and she looks great in a bikini or a beach maxi dress, holding a baby on her hip, all of them ankle deep in the ocean.
The women I’m talking about are not posting photos of anything resembling my life. They aren’t posting day drinking pics, or making jokes about being broke, or mention anything about their love life other than their “perfect hubby”. I can’t relate to their family life, and I only aspire to pieces of it, but I love looking at it.
All of the photos, the babies, the beaches, the hairstyles, along with strategic branding, creates beautiful imagery. This is why I love these women so much. Most of the time they are not selling me anything. They don’t do “unboxing” or “hauls”. They might have started out blogging about organization or makeup tricks, but they don’t do that anymore. Their content is purely for my eyeball’s pleasure. Their #ad or #partner posts are sparse and always done well. I can never tell it’s an advertisement unless I read the whole caption. They are legitimately showing me their beautiful lives.
Only 2% of the time do I stop to think, who took this photo? This type of thinking pulls me out of the fantasy I fall into when I look at their feeds. Their lives are magical and I don’t want to know how they pull it off.
While I appreciate the veil they provide for me, I know these photos and captions are their jobs. They work hard. I am often impressed with a women’s hustle, strategic vision, and passion. They started with a simple blog, years ago, and grew it. Like the blogger who got her start doing hairstyles on YouTube, after six years, she has launched her own hair extension line, which I know is doing very well because the product line expands every month. She is crushing it. And of course, I look at her Instagram stories updating me on the new stuff she’s launching, with no intention of buying her extensions.
Other times, I’m confused at how/why they make money doing what they do. Their pics are fine. But they don’t post much on their blog anymore. And it wasn’t anything super interesting. Generic takes on food, family, fun. I’m hating a little. Don’t get me wrong though, I thought a lot about this. Some of these blogs are just not interesting enough to deserve the kind of partnerships they are getting, in my opinion.
Most of the lady lifestyle bloggers I stumble upon are truly impressive to me. Yes, their photographs and seemingly perfect lives are great. They also just have a hustle and entrepreneurial spirit I don’t see in a lot of women I know. They work hard to expand their brand.
And they make a lot of money. This is not hard to figure out based on their lifestyle. Companies pay handsomely to #partner with. They don’t worry about money like I do. I know they don’t share the same anxiety I have when I hand over the gas station attendant my credit card to buy cigarettes. One because I know they don’t smoke (their skin is too good) and two, because they don’t worry about their credit limit when buying a $7 product.
Either way, I look with some envy. But the envy does not come from hate or anger. At least not focused on her. It’s on me. I’m mad at myself for not having a successful business. I’m mad at myself for not getting into this game earlier. For jumping around careers. For not being successful at all. Luckily, I shut that part of me off and continue to scroll, getting to more pics of floral bouquets on top of a Pottery Barn dining room table that costs as much as one year of my grad school tuition.
I envy everything I see that they have. Except the kids. But I envy the joy and stability they find in having kids and how it adds to the image of the perfect life. I want that. I want their bodies. I want their husbands. I want their outfits and make-up. I want their houses. I want their vacations. Yes, I travel, but I want their trips. I want their photographs of the trips. I want their money! I want their lives. More than I’d like to admit.
Why though? I so clearly don’t fit that life. I’m kind of a mess. Clearly, I can’t land a dude like they can. I definitely don’t have their bodies. I don’t want kids. I blog about depression and figuring out what I am supposed to do with my life. I drink too much. Their lives are so clearly not me.
Sometimes, I wonder if I torture myself going on deep dives into their lives. Why am I so obsessed with them? Do I secretly want that life? Do I secretly believe deep down I don’t deserve it? Do I just like to see that life like the other one million people who follow them?
I don’t know. I don’t have the answer. Just like I can’t answer why I was obsessed with the Tan Clan 15 years ago. Except back then, I can probably attribute most of it to teenage pressure to conform to beauty and popularity. But maybe now I’m facing the same thing. I am still aspiring to be thin, beautiful, rich, and perfect. Don’t get me wrong. I love myself and my life. But I am realistic about feeling self-doubt and not always feeling confident compared to our society’s standards.
I know that these women are problematic and can perpetuate racial/gender stereotypes that are not helpful/terrible. I also know that they can be kind and loving, to their families and the world, and advocates for humanitarian causes. I know that their images can tell women all sorts of shitty things, (be skinnier, richer, a mom, more successful and a mom). But I also know that they can be inspiring to women aspiring to be entrepreneurs or working moms. I could go on and on.
Am I going to continue to follow these women’s lives? No. Do I like their pictures? Yes. Do I want to be mindful of how it impacts me? Yes.
Like anything else in life, it’s not black and white.

Celebs Go ALL OUT For Christmas 2020! Custom Plaques, Richard Millie, Patek Philippe, Rolex Watches, Luxe Whips, Designer Bags & More!
All the luxury gifts! Celebs were showered with luxe gifts for Christmas 2020. See the expensive pieces, plus the sentimental gift that had us shedding tears inside…
Diamonds. Watches. Cars.
Christmas 2020 was LIT for celebs.
Outside of the fancy, expensive gifts - there were moments where sentimental gifts were exchanged. Rapper Ace Hood – who was once signed to DJ Khaled's We The Best – was gifted something priceless from his wife, Shelah Marie.
On Christmas Day, Shelah surprised Ace with custom plaques to celebrate the millions of streams he raked up since being independent. He’s no longer associated with Universal Music Group all its subsidiaries (We The Best).
"When @acehood was last on a major recording label they were excellent about celebrating wins. Ace has so many plaques in the house from that era. Since Ace went independent, he hasn’t received any plaques for his projects. Ace is too damn talented not to have his flowers while he can smell them,” his wife wrote.
”I got plaques made for his first two releases (Trust The Process 1 & 2) since going independent because in this house we don’t wait on the validation we want — we give it ourselves. I love you @acehood.”
Watch the heartwarming exchange (grab some tissues!) below:

This Photo of Barbie Ferreira Eating Sushi in a Too-Cool Cutout Dress Belongs in a Museum
Barbie Ferreira has turned Zoom dressing into an art form. The Euphoria actress recently wore the coolest outfit to appear in a virtual press junket for her upcoming film, Unpregnant. (She followed up the round of interviews with one of those constantly in-demand sushi boxes from Sugarfish.) In her caption, Barbie said the look's "tru inspiration" was the "iconic" Paloma Elsesser, who wore the same dress in a spread for the September 2020 issue of GQ.
The printed dress - by edgy, Berlin-based brand Ottolinger - features a tie at the waist, long sleeves, contrast piping, asymmetrical cutouts, and one high leg slit. Whew. The artful outfit, styled by Chris Horan, also consisted of white By Far lace-up booties and gold, serpent drop earrings by Anna Sheffield. In fact, the combination of the serpent earrings and the scene depicted on the dress offered quite the biblical vibe altogether. (Just us?)
The look was finally punctuated by bold green eye makeup done by Kali Kennedy ("Got a little wasabi on the eye," the makeup artist wrote on Instagram) and a sleek, middle-part hairstyle by Sylvia Wheeler.
Enjoy photos of Barbie's outfit ahead, and shop all the exact pieces that went into it.

Nicki Minaj may have shook up her Barbz with her online preganancy announcement, but her maternity photoshoot may actually break the internet.
On Monday (Jul 20), Nicki Minaj took to Instagram to share the good news that she and husband, Kenneth Petty, are expecting their first child, Rocking a sparkling Lacey Dalimonte bra studded with baby-themed trinkets along with the caption, “Preggers.” The “Yikes” rapper posted a few photos of herself cradling her baby bump while clad in the bejeweled bra and see-through platform heels studded with pearls.

During an interview with Page Six, Delemonte reveals that she was contacted by Nicki’s camp a week ago to design the bra for the colorful shoot.
“I was visiting my family in Michigan and got an email from Nicki’s stylist, Aquiles. He was like, ‘Hey, I have this crazy project — want to try and make it work?,’” Dalimonte said. “He told me the exciting news — which obviously was hush-hush — and said that the concept was old-school Nicki, very Harajuku.”

While the deadline was tight, the recent fashion school graduate states that it was her desire to help make the soon-to-be mom’s photoshoot complete that led to her completing the complicated piece a day early. Overall she says the experience is truly rewarding.
“To make something a week ago and have it already be out is really exciting,” Dalimonte told us of her creation for the Grammy nominee. “This is my first major project, and it’s really rewarding — especially since it’s such a huge moment for her.”
While Minaj stuck to her script for the first shoot, for her second series of photos, she featured the iconic eye of high fashion photographer David La Chapelle, who captured the Young Money Queen in a “Virgin Mary” inspired photoshoot to help capture this magical moment in her life. Although there was no special caption that accompanied the post, the breathtaking photo does seem to speak for itself.

Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty tied the knot in October 2019, just one month after she announced on Twitter that she was retiring to “have my family.”
“I’ve decided to retire & have my family. I know you guys are happy now,” she wrote. “To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me,
in the box- cuz ain’t nobody checkin me.
Love you for LIFE
.”
As of press time, Nicki Minaj did not include her due date with the announcement.

Ludovic Saint Sernin By Miguel Figueroa Photos by Alex Franco
One of the best ways to get your first foot in fashion - or any type of business for that matter - is through apprenticeship. Back when they were the new kids on the block, Yves Saint Laurent, Donna Karan and Alessandro Michele learned and paid their dues, respectively, under the tutelage of Christian Dior, Anne Klein and Tom Ford. Three years after working at Balmain with Olivier Rousting, 27-year-old Ludovic Saint Sernin struck out on his own, presenting his first collection; a gender fluid homage to late nineties minimalism. We caught up with the designer on his birthday to talk about his influences, obsessions, next steps and unusual morning routine.
Hi Ludovic, let's start with the basics. What time did you get up this morning? I woke up at 10, I usually wake up earlier but I just got back from California and the jet lag is real. It was an amazing holiday/research trip, very inspiring!
Do you have a routine? What did you have for breakfast? Yes, I do! It is kind of ridiculous though. I have apple juice and cereal in bed and I religiously watch an episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians or The Real Housewives, just to ease in the day. Then I start work at 11, and right now I am researching and sketching for next season.
What did you want to be when you were a child? I have always wanted to be a fashion designer for as long as I can remember. When I was just a little boy I was obsessed with The Little Mermaid, I had the Barbie, the sun lounger, everything and I would dress her etc. This obsession for her slowly transitioned into an obsession with Lindsay Lohan, when I was a teenager I would draw her everyday. Lukas Heerich who did the soundtrack for the presentation included some bits of interviews from her and mixed it with minimal music as a nod to her.
I was probably 10 when a friend of my mom’s introduced me to Yves Saint Laurent, not literally but she had some old VHS of his most iconic shows and I remember thinking, this is it, this is what I want to do.
Who were or still are your fashion icons? Alaïa has always been a model for me. He's built something so unique and special. I recently watched the documentary by Joe McKenna who I'm obsessed with and it was so fascinating to see how he works. There's no one else like him he's such a perfectionist. Helmut Lang is obviously a big reference as is Rei Kawakubo and Issey Miyake. Kirtsen Owen, I don't think there's a single image that she's in that doesn't inspire me, she's a huge inspiration. I posted a picture of her from Steven Meisel the other day and the caption simply said : mom.
You broke from working at Balmain - which is the antithesis of your style - and created a beautiful, minimal first collection. What were your biggest lessons working there? Balmain was my first fashion family, they have been amazing to me and I am very grateful for everything I have learnt there. I was working on embellishment and textiles which was so exciting to do there because you can really propose stuff and create amazing pieces. And their approach was very artisanal which I really appreciate.
Have you always played with gender bending? What do you consider to be the most masculine feature in a woman and the most feminine trait in a man? I actually only had done womenswear up until that first presentation and initially I thought it was going to be women’s. I was doing a project on Instagram where I would recreate pictures of me with boys I knew from Instagram and make them pose in my clothes. I created some really cool relationships with some of these boys and one of them became my fitting model/muse.
So even tough the clothes were originally women's, turns out as we were trying them they looked really good on a boy too. And I decided that it wasn’t really relevant anymore to try and categorize my pieces to one sex only. I myself don't really look whether it's women's or men's when I'm shopping. As long as you feel good in it and it fits your body why restrain yourself. I knew I wanted to show it on guys though. I worked with this really talented casting director and friend, Piotr Chamier, we share the same aesthetic when it comes to casting and he did an amazing job finding boys. What I really appreciate is that even though it was presented during Men's after the show we received loads of press requests for women’s shootings. It’s been about equal with that of the men’s. I am looking forward to seeing how they work in both contexts.
With regards to the second part of the question, I am struggling to answer that. Truth is I don’t really think in that way. I have long hair so you might say that is the most feminine thing about me but others might find it quite masculine. Likewise the neck of my fit model is long and thin but I don’t think it looks particularly feminine. I really don’t think that way and interestingly I think a lot of people my age and younger are not categorizing through sex or sexuality.
Who would be your ultimate person to dress? Yesterday I watched Basketball Diaries for the first time and Leonardo DiCaprio is just beautiful and so good in it, he was just twenty years old but looks sixteen. I wish I could have dressed him back in the days, he had that special something about him and also this androgyny that I love. But to answer your question, I love the idea of dressing sons or little brothers of celebrities: for instance Uma Thurman's son is gorgeous, looks just like her but in a boy. Or Pamela Anderson's son is actually really hot too. I recently met up with Niels Schneider's little brother Vassili, and I'd love to dress him for a special project.
What is your favorite scent? For the presentation I used Potpourri from Santa Maria Novella, it smells amazing and looks really beautiful. It was displayed all over the conservatory where I had the presentation on little ceramics plates I brought back from Kyoto. I wanted the scent to blend in with the natural smell of the boys in the presentation, it was a really hot day, and they were walking around between plants in a manner that evoked cruising. The scent of the potpourri, the boys sweat and the plants just all worked really well together.
Hot! Which are your favorite hide-outs in Paris? I spend most of my free time in London, so I am going to give you my favorite hide-outs there: breakfast at the Towpath in de Beauvoir, their grilled cheese sandwich is to die for, I love walking along the canal, brunch at Rawduck, Epping forest, in the fall the colors are splendid, the British library is the best place to read a book, you need to make an appointment for the reading room and it's great to hide away from the crowd. Then back at the Towpath for drinks and dinner at Gujurati Rasoi, they have my favorite dish on earth there, I always order the same thing.
What turns you on? A Wolfgang Tillmans picture. I went to see his exhibition at the Tate in London it was simply breathtaking.
What turns you off? Being unthoughtful or unconscious. I'm quoting Jake Gyllenhaal, I had to google this answer, I couldn't think of anything that turns me off.
Can you share with us your latest obsessions? I have discovered this beautiful bookstore in Paris, where they have an amazing selection of queer literature and art. I recently read L’Age d’or by Pierre Herbart which I highly recommend. And I am in the middle of reading Call me by your Name by André Aciman which is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents villa on the Italian Riviera. It is being released as a film next year and I cannot wait to see how they will translate this beautiful book.
Where would you like to take your brand to next? I have some very exciting projects and collaborations coming up but it is a bit too early to reveal. It is amazing how quickly things can move these days but most of the time it’s just me and I’d like to do things slowly and well rather than rush them.
What are you doing after this? It's my birthday today [28th of August], so I am going to eat some cake and enjoy a lovely dinner with my family! Originally published in the Fall & Winter 2017/18-Spring 2018 issue of Hercules Universal, Neon Dreams. Out now.

Whether we’d like to admit it or not, the beauty industry has over the years become a major powerhouse when it comes to the world of business and finance. If we’re not being flooded with articles from Forbes Magazine describing Kylie Jenner’s meteoric rise to the billion Dollar league, courtesy of her self-named make-up line (and now skincare too), we’re busy stanning Rihanna’s inclusive Fenty beauty and giving her all our coins. It doesn’t matter if you’re in it to look like an Instagram baddie, or simply as a means of dealing with certain insecurities, make-up is a powerful tool in the world we live in.
Victor Ezechukwu, popularly known as Vugo, is one artist who has successfully mastered this tool. The celebrity make-up artist who is responsible for a majority of Tonto Dikeh’s looks has also used his magic paintbrush on Big Brother alum, Princess, Nancy Isime and blogger, Ono Bello. His ability to make his clients feel beautiful and confident has taken Vugo from his Abuja base to Lagos and South Africa.

So how did he fall in love with the world of gloss and faux eyelashes? Well, Vugo breaks everything down for StyleVitae, from his idea of beauty, beauty trends we should leave behind, and how he keeps things fresh with Tonto.
When and how did you fall in love with the world of make-up?
I’ve always had a love for make-up since I was a child. Tracing it back to the days of icons like, Diana Ross, Celine Dion and Tyra banks. I always knew I wanted to be a superstar like Diana Ross or Tyra Banks. As funny as it might sound now, I knew all of Diana’s songs and looks. I was in awe of their existence. That’s how I got drawn into the beauty industry.

Do you have a signature look?
My signature look tends to be a glowed up nude or natural look with a glossy lip. Even though sometimes I play with colors and fluffed lashes, I almost always stick to my nude look.
How has the industry changed in terms of looks, since you started out?
The makeup industry has changed a whole lot. Back then, it was all about colours and gloss or shimmer. But now we’ve evolved and it’s alot more technical with well defined brows, a contoured nose and sculpted lips.
When are your thoughts on the true meaning of beauty?
Beauty to me means a whole lot. Doesn’t matter if it’s outward or inward, it has to be captivating, pure and should be more about you and what suits you. Beauty is happiness, comfort, joy, looking good and being confident in your looks.

3 products every woman must have on standby in her purse?
A lady should always have her lip gloss, powder and liner.
You recently started posting make-up tutorials on Instagram where you try on different looks yourself. Living in a country like Nigeria, where toxic masculinity is a common trait enforced by societal norms, how do you block out negative feedback?
About me and my makeup videos, to be honest I don’t feel like I owe anyone an explanation. I’m very good at minding my business and ignoring people with negative comments, because the people around me understand what I am doing. The response so far has been amazing. I would be naive to assume some people won’t get angry (even though most of them can’t afford my services), but then again, I look really good with make-up. So “society” could either get on board and support my growth, or sit back, and watch me take over the world.
How do you keep things fresh with Tonto after working with her on so many looks over the years?

It’s important to have a theme. Myself and King Tonto have always had a theme for each year. Last year was more about clean, fresh and natural looks, while this year we’re focusing on a more glowed-up clean face-beat, but with fluffy lashes and more of a glam/diva look that is not too heavy. This is how we keep our A-game on.
Favorite Tonto look?

It’s a difficult one, because all her looks are incredibly beautiful thanks to her flawless skin, and amazing personality. I trust any of picture you find of her with make-up done by me, or any other make-up artist will definitely slay.
What beauty trend should we leave behind?
I can’t say I want everyone to stop doing something, because what works for you might not work for me and vice-versa. However, I can’t stand brows with obvious looking lines, and heavy make-up. This is because I’ve tried them and they’re really uncomfortable. Make-up should be about comfort.
What’s your advice to those young boys and girls, working hard for a break in the industry?
My advice to them would be for them to remain consistent, research, ask questions, stay humble, be passionate about what they’re doing, strive for originality, and above all be truthful, because a client’s trust is very important.

The Truth Behind Fashion Nova's Kardashian Knockoffs Reveals How the Brand Became a Global Powerhouse
When Kylie Jenner celebrated her 21st birthday in August, the beauty mogul toasted herself in a pair of pink looks: a satin mini dress by Peter Dundas and a sequined strapless romper by LaBourjoisie. The second ensemble, the one that looked as if a tube top and biker shorts took a bath in bubblegum sparkles, was custom, naturally. But if it had hit retail racks, it would have cost $8,000, according to the Kuwait-based eveningwear label.

Encrusted with 70,000 Swarovski crystals, the bodysuit took 10 days to create—and just hours to knock off.
Less than a day after Kylie posted pictures to her Instagram account fast-fashion retailer Fashion Nova shared a $34.99 dupe on its feed, pairing it with the reality star’s birthday pic. The model even mimicked Jenner’s downward gaze and right-foot-forward pose. “Coming Soon!” the caption read.
But how?
Kylie’s birthday looks epitomize the brazen, blatant new frontier of fashion fakes. Fashion Nova recreated both of her outfits, as well as the fluorescent pink Yeezy cutout mini-dress Jenner’s sister Kim Kardashian wore that evening, and posted pictures of all three less than 24 hours after the party. “The devil works hard but fashion nova (sic) works harder,” read one viral tweet with screengrabs of the listings. It was punctuated with laugh-cry emoji—and liked by nearly 96,000 people.
So did Fashion Nova have some sort of head’s up, a sartorial equivalent of insider trading? Or was there a design team on standby, yards of glittery polyester waiting to be cut? And is any of this legal?
Fashion Nova has been around for more than a decade but grew in popularity in recent years, flooding the fast-fashion zone with several hundred new styles each week. The clothing is revealing—tight, barely-there streetwear and club attire—but the company is not. Founder Richard Saghian largely avoids the spotlight. A spokeswoman declined or did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Fashion Nova boasts more than 13 million followers on its Instagram feed and an army of 3,000 influencers, known as #NovaBabes, promoting its clothes. That group drove $54.1 million in earned media value, or the value of the publicity it receives via posts and engagement on social channels, from the second half of last year through the first half of this year, according to Tribe Dynamics, a San Francisco-based marketing technology firm. “They run one of the most sophisticated influencer programs that we track,” says Conor Begley, Tribe’s co-founder.
Kylie’s birthday looks epitomize the brazen, blatant new frontier of fashion fakes.
Among those influencers are big-name, well-paid celebrities. Cardi B is rumored to make $20,000 a month with Fashion Nova and has a capsule collection coming this fall. Kylie also has a relationship with the retailer, and Saghian once told The Cut that a post from her can result in $50,000 in sales.
Like many fast-fashion retailers, Fashion Nova offers a healthy share of “inspired by” pieces. Knockoffs are nothing new, although the way Fashion Nova presents them is. Most brands merchandise their recreations discreetly, leaving shoppers and fashion fans to draw their own conclusions. U.K.-based competitor PrettyLittleThing is still selling its recreation of Kendall Jenner’s 21st birthday outfit from 2016, a barely-there silver sequin mini also by LaBourjoisie. But its listing makes no mention of the model.

Fashion Nova, however, connects the dots. Its e-commerce listings for some knockoffs have the Fashion Nova version posted with a picture of the celebrity in her designer outfit. A high-necked white dress on sale for $49.99, for example, is paired with a picture of Cardi B on Saturday Night Live in a strikingly similar Christian Siriano gown. In an e-mail, Siriano told me the knockoffs are “not ideal” due to the potential to dampen his sales—but “flattering at the same time.”
What’s particularly confusing is that original Fashion Nova designs worn by celebrities are merchandised in a similar way. With a knockoff, the celebrity is on the right in the side-by-side pic; with an original FN design, the star is on the left. Shoppers who aren’t paying attention may not notice the difference.
Further complicating things is that not all Fashion Nova recreations are presented with pics of the celeb. The brand knocked off the purple La Perla dress Kourtney Kardashian wore to Kylie’s party with no mention of her. The same is true for the recreation of the black PVC mini Kendall Jenner wore and Khloé Kardashian’s sparkly three-piece ensemble.
Seems so. Clothing is considered a “useful thing,” meaning it serves a purpose (in this case, it literally covers your body). Useful elements of creative things are largely exempt from copyright laws, says Julie Zerbo, an attorney and editor-in-chief of The Fashion Law. Only design elements that could exist on their own, like a print, are actionable, says Zerbo.
What would be grounds for legal proceedings is using the stars’ pictures alongside the knockoffs without permission. Celebrities get to decide how their image is used for selling stuff. “They alone have the right to control how their image is used in a commercial way,” says Zerbo, pointing to the 2014 case when Katherine Heigl sued Duane Reade after the pharmacy used her picture in a tweet. (Heigl later withdrew her suit after the parties came to an agreement.)

Kylie and Kim’s pictures being used to sell knockoff versions of their designer ensembles—in tweets, on Instagram, and on Fashion Nova’s site—as well as their prior sponsored posts on behalf of the brand—would suggest that there's some sort of relationship. It’s possible their contracts allow such a thing, Zerbo says.
You have to wonder: Would Kris Jenner watch quietly if someone was using her daughters’ images to sell something, and they weren’t getting a cut?
Kylie’s reps declined to comment.
Adding up the evidence—Kylie’s picture on the Fashion Nova site with her duo of dupes, which were advertised less than 24 hours after the designer debut, plus the known business relationship she has with the line—it seems quite possible that Kylie or someone on her team was in cahoots with the retailer, giving it a peek at her sartorial plans before they hit her Instagram feed.
“Woaw,” wrote one reviewer on the product page, three days after it was first advertised. “How in the world did they make this so quickly. You'd think they called her asking what she was wearing for her birthday.”

Kylie or her team definitely tipped off at least one party before her, well, party: the cake baker. The five-tier cake was topped with a platinum-haired Barbie doll, face down into a tiny toilet, wearing a similar pink jumpsuit.
Yet Kylie’s stylist, Jill Jacobs, insists no such fashion arrangement took place. “While in the process of designing the bedazzled jumpsuit with LaBourjoisie, I jokingly said that Fashion Nova was going to have a copy in a week. I was wrong—they had one made within 24 hours,” Jacobs wrote in an e-mail. “There was no heads-up given to anyone; all of the fast-fashion brands were simply on their game.”

Kylie’s reps declined to comment, but even if the team had leaked, Zerbo says there would be no legal issues with that kind of tip-off.
The only risk might be a designer souring on a star and perhaps refusing to dress her in the future. But really, if Kylie comes a callin’, who is going to say no to her and her 118 million Instagram followers? LaBourjoisie founder Antoine Salameh said in an e-mail that dressing Jenner results in a surge of inquiries and new followers.
“For us to be able to dress someone of her stature provides us an unparalleled amount of exposure,” he says. He graciously acknowledged the inevitable high demand for a lower-priced version with this caveat: “We do hope that we are still credited for the conception and creation of the original design.”

So if Fashion Nova truly did this on its own, how did it pull it off?
The most impressive thing it did was post a pic of its rapid-fire recreations so quickly. One-off samples for that purpose are easy to come by, a former high-ranking executive at a Fashion Nova competitor told me. You can make one of just about anything in a day, or even three different styles, as long as you have the staff on hand. Kylie’s birthday celebration was a pre-planned event, meaning Fashion Nova could have had the date it on its calendar (the way eveningwear makers often watch the Oscars red carpet). The brand also has a full-service in-house photo studio, making it painless to have a hair-and-makeup-ready model waiting for a quick shot.
Saleable quantities of a garment—the first 1,000 or even 10,000—is a trickier pursuit. Making a pattern would be easy enough, given that all three of Kylie’s birthday recreations are Fashion Nova style specialties. It practically mints cutout mini dresses and strapless bodysuits (Kylie herself has previously worn a plain black one in an Instagram ad). It’s not a stretch, design-wise, to think that they had those patterns drawn up and adapted them to match the sisters’ looks.
Access to the right, undyed fabric is helpful, too, says Felipe Caro, a professor in the operations management group at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. Fashion Nova’s suppliers could have had loads of the nylon-spandex stretch fabric just waiting to become Kim’s pink mini dress.
The biggest time savings comes from producing goods close to shoppers, eliminating transportation time from Asia or even South America, Caro added.
It’s not a stretch, design-wise, to think that they had those patterns drawn up and adapted them to match the sisters’ looks.
Fashion Nova declined to comment on its manufacturing process, but Saghian told WWD earlier this year that its buying and design team works with more than 1,000 manufacturers. Many are based in Los Angeles. Indeed, all three of the earliest Kylie recreations are listed as “Made in USA.”
The most revealing tell of all of this may be the actual selling timetable. Fashion Nova first posted pictures on August 10, the day after the party, saying they were “Coming Soon!” But it took more than three weeks, until September 3, for it to advertise two of the three dupes for sale. “The Wait Is Over!” the Instagram caption read. The pink bodysuit was promoted five weeks after the original post.
So yes, Fashion Nova is fast—just maybe not as fast as everyone has been led to believe. But, when you’re spending thousands of dollars less than your fave to look like your fave, does it really matter? Maybe not. As one Fashion Nova reviewer wrote about her Kim lookalike dress, ”This dress is everything! I got so many compliments on it!! I want to wear it everyday for the rest of my life lol.”
