The Savory Snacks Market size is expected to be worth around USD 440 billion by 2033, from USD 273 Billion in 2023, growing at a CAGR of 4.9% during the forecast period from 2023 to 2033.
The savory snacks market refers to the segment of the food industry that focuses on the production, distribution, and sale of salty and flavorful snack foods. These snacks, characterized by their savory taste profiles, include products such as potato chips, corn and tortilla chips, nuts and seeds, popcorn, pretzels, and a variety of other regional or specialty items. The market is driven by factors such as the global expansion of retail infrastructure, particularly in developing countries, and changing consumer preferences towards more convenient and tasty snack options. However, it also faces challenges from health concerns related to ingredients like salt, sugar, and artificial additives, prompting a shift towards healthier alternatives. The dynamic nature of the market offers significant opportunities for innovation, particularly in the creation of nutritious snacks that cater to the growing demand for wellness-oriented food choices. Despite the competition from local manufacturers, the savory snacks market continues to evolve, adapting to meet diverse consumer needs across different regions.

Product Analysis:
In 2023, Potato Chips dominated the Savory Snacks market, capturing over 68.2% of the share. These thinly sliced, deep-fried or baked potato slices are seasoned with various flavors, offering a crispy texture and a wide range of taste options. Corn & Tortilla Chips, made from corn masa, are popular for pairing with dips like salsa and guacamole. Nuts & Seeds provide a crunchy, nutrient-rich option, available in varieties like peanuts, almonds, and cashews. Popcorn, heated until fluffy and crunchy, is often enjoyed with salt or seasonings, sometimes coated with caramel or cheese. Pretzels, baked dough twisted into knots, are typically salted and crispy. Other savory snacks include items like pita chips, vegetable chips, and regional or specialty snacks.
By Flavor:
In 2023, Barbeque flavors led the savory snacks market with over 35% share, beloved for their smoky, tangy taste. Spice flavors also captured a significant share, appealing to those who enjoy a fiery twist. Salty flavors remained a classic favorite, while Plain/Unflavored options continued to attract consumers preferring simplicity. Other flavors added diversity with unique and innovative combinations, catering to niche preferences and adventurous snackers. Barbeque flavors, however, reigned supreme, captivating taste buds and dominating the market.
Distribution Channel Analysis:
In 2023, hypermarkets & supermarkets were the leading distribution channels for savory snacks, holding over 62% of the market share. These stores offered a wide variety of brands and flavors, attracting consumers with their comprehensive selections and promotions. Convenience stores catered to on-the-go consumers with limited but popular snack options. Online platforms grew in popularity, providing a vast array of choices, home delivery, and exclusive deals. Other channels included specialty snack shops, vending machines, and local grocery stores with specific snack ranges.

Drivers:
The global expansion of the retail industry significantly boosts sales of savory snacks. In developed regions like the US, Canada, the UK, France, and Australia, supermarkets and hypermarkets play a crucial role in delivering these snacks to consumers. Similarly, developing nations such as India, China, and Brazil are seeing a surge in modern retail formats as retailers invest heavily to meet the growing demand for snack products. This expanding retail infrastructure provides a significant opportunity for manufacturers and suppliers to increase their market reach in these fast-growing economies.
Restraints:
Health concerns about ingredients commonly used in savory snacks, such as wheat, corn, vegetable oil, salt, sugar, and artificial additives, are a major restraint on market growth. These ingredients, while essential for taste and production, raise health concerns, prompting consumers to opt for healthier alternatives. As health awareness increases and regulatory bodies encourage healthier eating habits, the market faces challenges in meeting consumer demands for nutritious options while maintaining taste.
Opportunity:
The shift in dietary habits towards snacking, driven by globalization and changing lifestyles, presents a significant opportunity for healthy snacks. With a growing awareness of the impact of food choices on health, consumers are increasingly seeking snacks that offer essential nutrition to reduce the risks of chronic illnesses. This demand for healthier snack options reflects a broader trend towards wellness-oriented lifestyles, prompting manufacturers to innovate and introduce nutritious snacks that cater to these evolving preferences.
Challenges:
The growing demand for ready-to-eat snacks has intensified production needs, especially in fragmented markets like Asia and Europe. Local manufacturers, often using lower-cost equipment, produce snacks infused with local flavors and spices, which are priced lower and cater to specific regional tastes. This creates stiff competition for established brands, challenging them to maintain product quality and innovate to meet local consumer preferences. Navigating this competition requires larger companies to continuously enhance their strategies, product offerings, and understanding of local tastes to maintain a competitive edge in these fragmented markets.

For your scholars! 64 through 71 and 74 through 80 please! I'm interested in learning more about your ocs! - Toad Mod
Yo! hehehehe I like this batch of questions too XD
I’ll answer the first half now, and the other half later after classes get out for me!
Lemme see what I can manage:
64: Where were your scholar’s parent(s) or guardian(s) born?
Lillie: Lillie’s dad was born in Yamagata prefecture in Japan, and her mother is a second generation Japanese American from central California.
Vivian&Darcy: Their biological parents (out of the three) were both born then the UK, and their parent’s partner was born in Melbourne, Australia.
Flora: Her mother is British and her bio-father (divorced and deceased) was Irish. Her stepmother is of Indian descent but was born and raised in Whales.
Abigail: Her biological parents were born in Mexico and Texas, but lived in northern Mexico. Her foster parents were born in New York but her foster mother is half Korean and her foster father is Jamaican American. (They moved to Texas, and then Arizona for the warmer climate and a desire to live in a quieter, more natural environment)
65: Is there anything about your scholar’s past that they don’t want anyone to know?
Lillie: Her deadname, basically.
Vivian&Darcy: Vivian hasn’t got any, but Darcy, like Lillie, would rather not have his deadname spread around. He’s far more comfortable in his new body though, than Lillie, but no matter how much you physically feel good, it sucks to have people disregard you and undermine you.
Flora: for the sake of Angus’s privacy and her own, she prefers no one knows she has a child. When she meets, by chance, Angus’s biological father a few years after she’d been attending Arlington and finds out he’s transferred to the same school via a scholarship, she is apprehensive about telling him, but manages to work out an agreement with him to share custody so long as he keeps quiet about the situation.
Abigail: If she could have her way, she wouldn’t let you know what she ate for breakfast. Mainly, she doesn’t want people to know her personal life, she wants them to appreciate her for the character she is on stage and her presence in the spotlight, but wishes for her past with her family and current relationship with Flora to be untouched and protected as much as possible.
66: Has your scholar ever kissed anyone?
Lillie: Nope, purely clean lips here. Familial kisses don’t count, and she’s never really been desired or sought by anyone before that was of the gender she prefers so it’s kind of rough on her. Hopefully Arlington will change that, because there’s a pair of lips named Tadashi Nakano that she is dying to taste.
Vivian: She had a girlfriend who is now just a close friend. (her friend got into the T.V. acting business and is currently the star of a teen mystery drama on a British kids show channel)
Darcy: He kissed a girl for a dare once, and had a boyfriend for 4 days that ended up being one of those “I thought I liked you but i guess i kind of didn’t, and this is awkward now” kind of people.
Bonus: Flora kissed her kid’s dad quite a lot that one specific time, and she and Abigail kiss around 8 times a day on average.
67: What is your scholar’s favorite holiday?
Lillie: Lillie likes Halloween the best. There weren’t many holidays her family celebrated, and Halloween was one of the few they did. She uses it as an excuse to cosplay because she can’t afford to go to real conventions.
Vivian&Darcy: They both love Valentines day and go all out romantic for their significant others or crushes.
Flora: Her and Angus’s birthday. Her parents travelled the world with her so she knows of too many holidays to count, let alone choose one. And so, she figures that her day of birth and her son’s are probably the best ones there are because they’re special days that only the two of them can fully appreciate
Abigail: Halloween and Christmas both. This chick is like ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ in human form.
68: What do they enjoy dressing up as on Halloween?  If they don’t dress up or go trick-or-treating, then what do they do instead?
Lillie: She uses Halloween as an excuse to cosplay and has a roster of anime characters that she’d like to cosplay next. She chooses a character from a different anime each year. Recently she went as Rock Lee, and her older sister went as (a very unfit) Might Guy from Naruto.
Vivian&Darcy: ever since being born they’ve gone for halloween in things that come in pairs, from salt and pepper shakers at 2 years old to Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett this year (their plan for this year is to run a meat pie, and other baked goods, cafe from within their parents home.)
When not dressing up which is rare, they have been hired to host children’s parties in their local neighbourhood (also part of why they hold a themed cafe or barbeque each year).
Flora: She seldom had time for Halloween as a kid seeing as she was constantly travelling but her favourite country’s practice of Halloween is Britain because of how extravagant they can get, and now that she’s dating Abby she’s learning about the history and significance of ‘The Day of the Dead’. She usually just ends up dressing like a witch with the same costume each year but accessorised differently.
Abigail: La Dia de los Muertos, which isn’t really ‘Halloween’ as most western countries view it, was always her favourite time of the year. In an otherwise rather lacking childhood, most of her good memories came from the festival. Her foster parents upon adopting her researched and studied how to help her keep in touch with her cultural history and tradition, and helped her set up a shrine in their own house so she could still celebrate her Abuela and her older brother who died when she was 6.
69: It’s your crush’s birthday!  What does your scholar get/do for them?
Lillie: Aside from generally stressing and not knowing what to do, she probably cooks him something and offers it to him with shaking hands, most likely looking away. Tadashi, being who he is, makes a joke to ask if it’s poisoned which earns him an irritated glare. Then he nearly cries at how good it tastes.
Vivian: She takes you out on a date. Where do you want to eat? What do you want to wear? You wanna see a movie? Late night walk in the park? You got it. She’s on it. Already bought tickets a week ago. Reserved a private table in a restaurant. Gets her parent’s driver to take you places.
Darcy: he’s similar to Vivian, but he does things more personalised like. He sneakily susses out what you want and like all year beforehand and does stuff like make a ghost profile on amazon or pintrest to see what things are in your wishlist etc. He’d probably also make a mixtape of songs that you and him like, or that are important to you (hard to do in his case, since he’s trying to woo Axel though). Also, he’s DTF (Down to fuck FUN!). Just saying.
Flora: Birthdays are BIG deals for her, so she, like Darcy, finds out things you like and want. She is more direct about it though and asks you to your face what you want, or what you would like. She also is good at cake decoration and likes making personalised designs for them. She can also sing ‘happy birthday’ in 4 languages, and on occasion has been able to get ahold of foreign gifts from places she’s visited overseas before.
Abigail: For the very first birthday she spends with you, She puts on a whole personalised performance for you! (non sexually, of course, this is the kind where your parents and kids can be invited too). She gets caterers to help with food, and she buys out a venue of whatever size she needs and you and your whole family and as many friends as you can fit are invited.
For later on in your relationship this only happens again during milestones like 5 years anniversary or something (it’s not a secret, I’m keeping her and Flora together forever). On off years, she just cuddles with you and spoils you with shopping sprees and they buy huge donut boxes or chocolate sample boxes and watch trashy/cheesy foreign romances.
70: How would your scholar react to seeing their crush crying?
Lillie: If somehow, by some, horrific, ungodly force, you managed to make Tadashi of all people cry, She would probably gently ask him if she can help at all. she knows he’s a little bristly, and doesn’t always appreciate her over-empathy, but she loves him a lot and wants to help him.
She gives him the option to turn her away if he needs time alone but wants him to know that she is available whenever he is ready to talk. If he is, by chance, ready, she sits by him and holds him closely, either listening to him talk, or listening to him cry. Kisses and head scratches are also inevitable.
Vivian: She is the person who runs up to you and holds you, asking you what’s wrong. I’m apprehensive to go further because I don’t know much about her crushes yet (Claire and Alistair) so i’ll have to wait and see. I feel like Vivi would probably react slightly differently depending on how her crush displays grief, but on a base level, she’s a hugger and sweet-talker to get you to calm down.
Darcy: It’s time to FIGHT. Who does he need to knock the fuck out? The first few times, his crush (Axel) is probably too busy holding him back to be crying anymore. After a few more times, Darcy is still raving mad, but he keep it in long enough to responsibly evaluate the situation. Still probably ready for low-key revenge, but he’s not as trigger happy with his fists anymore.
Flora: She calmly asks her to walk her through what happened. A future lawyer at heart, she can and will do whatever she can to make sure Abby is done right by via compensation or proper and called for retribution. However, she is fully aware of the fact that sometimes Abigail gets into trouble in the first place because of her own faults. Abby isn’t very good at making friends, but good at making enemies. Definitely not an innocent little angel. Her girlfriend is basically her #1 test client, because of how she is, socially and how much legal drama the celebrity life brings on top of that.
Abby: Abby isn’t good with emotions. She’s not even good with her own, let alone knowing how to help Flora when she’s down. It’s usually the other way around. When Flora is upset, which is very very rare, Abigail tends to leave her alone or to sit quietly by her, super anxious and not knowing what to do at all. Flora doesn’t resent this, because she knows Abby’s limitations and inabilities. She tends to prefer to cry it out until she’s done crying anyway, and typically feels better afterwards.
71: How would your scholar react to seeing their enemy crying?
Lillie: She laughs. Quietly, of course, and to herself, but she’s typically satisfied if things aren’t going well for an enemy. Of course, unless the situation is extreme or a special case. But there is one specific enemy in mind (an OC) whom she’d happily drop kick into the sun if she could, so seeing her cry would be fine by her.
Vivian: She ignores them and moves on. She doesn’t care enough to tempt them when they’re in a good mood, and she certainly doesn’t want to offer her kindness to someone who will probably use it against her later.
Darcy: Same as his sister, but he also probably then asks what happened, usually out of general curiosity.
Flora: She has very few enemies, and being a future lawyer, she is training herself to have less of a bias when it comes to justice (the exception is if you mess with Abigail). She’ll ask if she can help in anyway, or at the very least she’ll ask what’s wrong. Also, she has a deep maternal instinct in the first place, and wants to help out as many as she can manage.
Abby: Abby ignores them like the twins do, not only because of how bad she is around crying, but she might have been the reason some people have cried.
She has gotten into fist fights with people before for her general inability to chill out, and especially if it’s a person she dislikes. She was almost expelled once for grabbing Karolina by the tie and ripping her shirt collar, and has given Axel a wedgie on more than one occasion. Naturally she and Darcy hate each other because Darcy tends to get too protective over Axel. It’s a big, ugly, sad mess.
I’ll continue the other questions in a second post!

Be warned, the list is long so you might want to allow longer than a weekend to visit Byron Bay if you want to get a real feel for the place!
Before I crack on and tell you about the must-see Byron Bay attractions, have you considered your accommodation in Byron Bay? Only I found an amazing luxury tree house which I talk about in my post ‘5 of the best treehouses on AirBnB‘ that you should most definitely check out!
Just imagine waking up here?!!
Ok so for the best things to do in Byron Bay, here we go..!
Fun things to do in Byron Bay, Australia
Beach time
You can’t possibly visit Byron Bay without some beach time! There are several to choose between from small secluded coves to long stretches of perfect white sandy beaches with aquamarine water. Park up your beach towel and chill out with a good book, it’s time to relax!
Shopping
When you’re done relaxing, it’s time to hit the shops. Now Byron isn’t a big place so don’t go expecting any huge shopping malls! But it has small-town charm and you will find some beautiful shops selling unique homeware, interesting gifts, gorgeous beachy clothes and beautiful bookstores. There’s even a hippy shop selling everything tie-dye! If vintage clothes is your thing, you will find an abundance of great treasure troves.
Diving at Julian Rocks
Just a 10-minute boat ride from Main beach, is Julians Rocks. Warm and cold currents meet here creating an amazing opportunity to see a huge variety of marine life. Between December and May, there is a good chance you’ll get to see leopard sharks. Dive or snorkel, it’s your choice!

Walk up to the Lighthouse
An absolute must-do activity in Byron Bay! This walk, which starts from Main beach, will take you through the woods (keep your eyes peeled for wallabies,) up over some cliffs to watch the waves crashing against the rocks, down to some beautiful coves and then back up to the Lighthouse – Australia’s most eastern point! The views are just beautiful in every direction you look! A must-see in Byron Bay! Top tip: If you’re an early riser, head up for sunrise at the lighthouse – it’s spectacular!
Markets
I used to LOVE the markets in Byron Bay. In fact, it was one of my favourite things to do in Byron Bay! They take place once a month on a Sunday so you’ll have to time your trip well but if the market isn’t in Byron, it’ll be in another local town! The markets are always teeming with people. There are so many colourful stalls selling quirky items. You’ll find delicious eateries and lots of live music. It’s a great way to spend the morning.
Live Music
Byron Bay is host to some awesome live music. Despite being a small town it attracts both local musicians and big names alike. When I lived in Byron, I loved Sunday afternoons at The Beach Hotel where the music starts in the afternoon and carries on late into the evening. All the locals would head straight to the pub, conveniently set right on the beach, straight from the popular markets I mentioned above. It brought the whole community together – young and old. Frequently in the afternoons, the children were encouraged to get up on stage and join in with the bands! I loved this relaxed, local friendly vibe!
For bigger bands and an adult only venue, there’s the Great Northern Hotel which hosted some awesome bands when I was there. For more local music, The Railway Bar (a converted railway station) never disappointed.
Splendour in The Grass Music Festival
Once a year in the Summer, Byron Bay hosts one of the biggest music festivals in Australia, Splendour in The Grass. Spread over 3 days, it sees huge acts – my favourite I saw there was Lana Del Ray! Other artists who’ve featured recently include Vance Joy, Queens of the Stone Age, Two door cinema club, Stormzy and Royal Blood. Read more about it here.
Byron Bay Bluesfest
TheBluesFest is yet another amazing music festival right in Byron Bay! Set over several stages on Easter weekend, this contemporary blues & roots festival has seen acts such as Bob Dylan, Hozier, Paul Simon and John Legend perform! On the line up for 2018, you’ll find Lionel Richie, Lauryn Hill, Seal and Sheryl Crow!
Sea Kayaking with dolphins
I absolutely loved this – what an absolute giggle! Mostly because I’m truly terrible at sea kayaking and my friend was even worse! At one point we actually ended up being towed past the waves out to sea by another Kayak. Hey, here’s a top tip: if you see a dolphin, don’t both lean the same way to get a better look… You guessed it, Splash! On the plus side, our giggles as we tried (mostly in vain) to get back into the kayak, actually caught the attention of the dolphins who came over to investigate! Maybe sometime I’ll have to tell you the full story! (By the way, I’m now a lot better in a kayak, thank god for that!!) Check out Go Sea Kayak for more info!
Take a surf lesson
Ok so I was equally bad at this and for me, it resulted in yet another wild dolphin encounter! Whilst all the others were practising their new found skills, I was still trying to stand up! A curious dolphin made it’s way over – maybe it thought I was in trouble?! But dolphins or no dolphins, you have to try surfing in Byron Bay! It’s actually famous for its great surf!
Whale Watching
As you might have gathered by now, Byron Bay is not short of dolphins! But it also gets its fair share of Humpback whale sightings between June and October. You can take a tour with Whale Watching Byron Bay or if you’re strapped for cash or short of time, just keep your eyes peeled at the Lighthouse – I saw whales breaching and splashing about from there. In some ways, it was better than the whale tour as it was so unexpected!

Visit one of the many amazing restaurants
Byron Bay’s food scene is amazing. Breakfast, lunch or dinner – Byron will have something to suit everyone! From Thai food to seafood or pizzas on the beach, you can’t fail to have a good meal in Byron! My personal favourites include;
The Treehouse – outdoors and lit up with cute fairy lights in the trees, great acoustic live music and delicious pizza, all a stone’s throw from the beach.
The Balcony – Always a great menu, I remember the seafood paella was particularly good. Wash it down with some lovely wines or cocktails and indulge in some people watching from your prime balcony position!
TopShop – no not the British clothes shop, this is a great cafe with a real local vibe. Take away, sit inside or lounge on the grass outside, anything goes. I highly recommend the chicken pesto on sourdough with a banana smoothie. So addictive – it was not good for my waistline!
Visit Bangalow
Just up the road is a small town called Bangalow which I loved to visit on my days off. Great cafes, vintage clothes shops and a bookshop that I never got bored of browsing! They also have a great farmers market on the weekends.
Visit the Arts Factory
The Arts Factory, primarily a budget backpackers hostel, is also a great place for finding live music, workshops (such as didgeridoo making and African drumming) and the Byron Bay Brewery pub on site is also home to an alternative cinema The Pighouse Flicks where you can chill out on comfy cushions on the floor whilst sipping a glass of wine!
Join in the Drumming Circle
On the 1st Sunday of the month, after the markets, head to where Main beach meets Belongil at sunset for The Drumming Circle! A group of people who love music who join together to jam together. A random mix of drums, guitars, banjos, ukeleles, even saxophones! If you, don’t have an instrument, make one! (I frequently saw people drumming on bins even!) Or dance. Or just find a rock to sit on and enjoy the music and people’s creativity!
Have a Barbeque on Wategos Beach!
One of my favourite things to do in Byron Bay is to enjoy a beach BBQ. Wategos beach, perfectly nestled in the hills and home to several millionaire mansions, is a great place for a chilled out BBQ on the beach! Take a dip in the sea, have a surf or watch the beautiful sunset with a few beers and throw a shrimp on the barbie!
Take a Yoga Class
Byron Bay is a great place for alternative healthy living and has a great colourful hippy vibe. So there is nowhere better to take some holistic classes such as yoga or pilates. You can even do some Yoga on the beach!
Credit to Simon Rae
Take a Massage
If you are not relaxed enough already, there is an absolute abundance of places to get a massage in Byron Bay! Or if you feel like splashing the cash, there are also lots of beautiful retreats in the surrounding areas for the ultimate R&R! My favourite place for a massage was conveniently a 2-minute walk from the beach, the  HollisticMassage Centre.
Visit The Byron Bay Hinterland
Some people get so caught up in the beautiful beaches, coastal walks and other great things to do in Byron Bay that they forget entirely, to visit the Hinterland which has its own charm. Beautiful rainforest, quirky villages such as Nimbin which appear stuck in the 70’s and impressive waterfalls. Definitely, pay the hinterland a visit when you are in Byron Bay.
Go horse riding on the beach
An alternative way to explore the beaches in the surrounding area is to go by horseback. They cater for all levels of experience and only go out in small groups. What better way to experience the beautiful beaches than on a glorious sunset horse ride?!

Swipe what you can sustain – only whip out the credit card if necessary and make sure you can payback your purchases in full or at least, half, when the statements comes in.
Carry cash, not card – withdraw the amount in cash as allocated in your budget and leave your card at home to avoid overspending because with cash, you know to stop when your wallet is empty.

Chris and Marissa’s Intimate Off-the-Grid California Wedding
Marissa and Chris’ wedding could not have been any more gorgeous. From the awe-inspiring desert landscape, to the bride’s fabulous Rue De Seine gown, the wedding was the perfect mixture of desert authenticity and rustic glamor!
Marissa and Chris chose the talented Sam Arroyo to capture their Cali wedding. For them, great photography was essential!
“Spending a good portion of the budget on the photographer that would capture the happiest day of our lives was a no-brainer. I had asked one of my dearest friends to tell me the one thing she would have changed about her wedding if she could and she said without hesitation, the photographer. She said it was her biggest regret and there was no way we were going to make the same mistake. Friends of mine had gotten married earlier that year and I was obsessed with their wedding photos and video, so I knew exactly who I was going to call for a recommendation. They gave me Sam Arroyo’s name and the rest is history!”
Marissa, 30 & Chris, 33
Location:  Pioneertown, California
Wedding Date: November 12, 2016
Number of Guests: 28
Wedding Cost:  $16,000-18,000. We spent the majority of the budget on location, my dress of course, and our photographer. I had originally imagined spending somewhere closer to $10,000 but we fell in love with  The Ruin Venue that was quite a bit more expensive than I had originally planned and it was worth every penny. The owners of the property, Paul and Tony, were AMAZING. I can’t say enough good things about working with them to create our dream wedding. They went above and beyond what we ever expected. As for the dress, I had also planned on spending far less but that all went out the window and when I put on the Rue De Seine dress I had been coveting for over a year. It was just too perfect, and I couldn’t imagine getting married in anything else. Spending a good portion of the budget on the photographer that would capture the happiest day of our lives was a no-brainer.
Wedding Ceremony Location: The ceremony took place in front of this incredible rock formation on the The Ruin Venue, right at sunset. We skipped the seats and our friends and family just gathered around us as we said our vows. It was magical.
Wedding Reception Location: The reception took place mainly in the ruins themselves where the original fireplace from the home was warming up the chilly November night. There was a beautiful bar made out of old wine bottles and an ornate fire pit that has to be seen to be believed, so there were plenty of places for people to congregate and chat; it was lovely! We had dinner not long after the sun went down, under a newly constructed pavilion that was adorned with strings of carnival lights. We wanted it to feel like a family dinner we’d have at home so we opted for a family style dining table and a menu of barbeque and comfort foods.
Why did you have an intimate wedding?
We had an intimate wedding for a couple of reasons. First, a large wedding was never what I had in mind. I wasn’t sure I ever wanted to be married before meeting Chris, and he’s already had one wedding so for us it was really about the marriage more than the wedding and we just wanted to make sure we didn’t waste the night only getting to talk to each person for a couple minutes at a time. Second, this might be the only chance we get for all, or most, of our nearest and dearest to meet and spend time together. We wanted them to have the opportunity to get to know each other rather than sit at isolated tables and form familiar cliques, which you often see at larger weddings. We didn’t want it to feel like there are friends and then there is family. We wanted everyone to hang out together and that’s exactly what happened so it was perfect. Lastly, Chris is from Australia, which meant the majority of his friends and family are on the other side of the world and many of them would be unable to make the big trip. Even for those who could make the trip we rather they come when wedding coordination isn’t making life so hectic and we can really take the time to catch up and show them our city. We have plans to have a reception in Australia at the end of this year. So ultimately we chose to have a more intimate U.S. wedding supplemented with a party or two in Australia.
What are some the challenges that you faced planning an intimate wedding?
Guest list! We knew we wanted something intimate but that doesn’t make creating the guest list any less painful. I have a really large family on my dad’s side and I would have loved to have each and every aunt, uncle, cousin, second cousin, kids etc. at the wedding but it just wasn’t possible. We basically had to take on an all or nothing policy and that was really hard. I lost sleep over the guest list. Also we ran into some challenges with rentals in that many of the vendors were not used to catering to such a small event. Sometimes the only option was to rent 500 wine glasses and we just didn’t need that many. Even the venue owners said they had never done a wedding as small as ours, so it was a learning curve for everyone. Also we didn’t exactly set ourselves up for the easiest time when it came to venue choice. The locations itself was pretty off the grid so trying to get even 30 guests to the location, and to find them accommodations proved to be quite the challenge. Not to mention we had no cell service out there so coordination was difficult! However having only 30 guests worked out to our advantage because I can’t imagine how hard coordination would have been with 50 or 100 guests. Also I have to say that being off the grid a bit was one of the best parts of this night. Nobody was on his or her cell phone, scrolling through social media, or uploading pictures; it was just us and the desert sky, great wine, and even better conversation.
Was it difficult to pare down the guest list?
As I said above it was incredibly difficult and it was the only thing I cried about through the entire process. I didn’t want to offend anyone, and I knew deep down that was probably unavoidable. Of course some people understood completely, particularly those who have had to deal with wedding guest lists themselves, but of course there are always a few that take it personally and I can’t explain how difficult that was for us. There are so many people we love and cherish deeply that we could not invite and that bothered me up until the day of the event, and even for some time after.
Did you have any ‘issues’ with the small guest list from friends and family? If so, how did you address them?
No one came right out and said that they were bothered by not receiving an invitation but of course we heard through other people that some had been offended. Honestly, I didn’t address it at all. I’ve heard horror stories about this kind of thing but I was really lucky in that I think at the end of the day the people in my life know that an invitation or lack of one is not a direct reflection of how much I care for them. I feel very secure and confident about the relationships I have in life and I hope they would feel the same.
What were the highlights of the ceremony?
Hands down it was walking down the aisle arm in arm with my dad to marry my best friend for the second time. Chris and I didn’t have our parents at the first little chapel wedding so having them all there to see us exchange vows was incredibly special and definitely the highlight of the day for me. Having my grandmas there was also really important and brings tears to my eyes now just thinking about it. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to have Chris’ grandparents there as well.
What were the highlights of the reception?
Such a hard question! Family style dinner under the stars, dancing with my dad in the courtyard of the ruin, taking tequila shots with my mom, smoking celebratory cigars in front of the fireplace with my husband and father in law, or reminiscing around the fire pit with my best friends…all of these moments were highlights that I’ll never forget. However I think if I had to choose one defining moment it would be dancing with my husband to Kenny Loggins, “Danny’s Song” with a glass of red in my hand and tears in my eyes. That’s the moment when it all kind of sunk in and the emotion was pretty overwhelming.
What was the best thing about having an intimate wedding?
Hands down it was having our friends and family get the chance to get to know one another. We had a pizza night rehearsal dinner at a house my family had rented in Pioneertown and I knew after that the following night was going to be a blast. Everyone just clicked so well and it was so wonderful to see my best friend talking to my grandma, and my husband getting to know my sister’s fiancé, and my in-laws getting to know my aunts and uncles. Honestly it was surreal. There’s just so few times in life where you get to have all these people that you love so deeply in one room together laughing and talking, and acting like they’ve known each other forever. It was magic. I truly believe that if we had decided to have a wedding of 100 or 200 people these connections might not have happened.
What advice do you have for couples who are considering an intimate wedding?
My only advice would be that once you’ve decided to go intimate you have to really commit. As the months of planning go buy you are going to think about this person or that person or someone’s spouse or boyfriend or girlfriend, or that friend from work, or that second cousin twice removed that you should invite but you have to just come up with your guest list early on and stick with it. You have to accept that not everyone is going to be happy about it but this day is about you and your significant other. Nobody else. So do what’s going to make you happy and just trust that it’s going to work out. Don’t have a big wedding to please other people. If you plan this wedding based on what other people want you’ll find yourself broke, disappointed, or both.
