a/n: EXTREMELY late to this ask but only because I couldn't think of a very good idea. hope this is good!

Someone said on tiktok Banda was supposed to be liked (this is on a video about Banda stans) and I think the show portrayed his and Yaba's win so differently because Chishiya was there. He was not supposed to be liked. He's a protagonist yes, because the Jack of Hearts is the antagonist of this story. But him and Yaba? Very clearly were not good people or supposed to be liked in the slightest. I think Eiji was supposed to be considered the most likeable out of the bunch because he sort of became a main character EXTREMELY BRIEFLY. Extremely briefly........extremely.

Their win in the manga was actually kind of depressing. Because literally every other kind-hearted and good person fucking died. They actually caused the deaths of a few for their selfish ways. I think it became extremely obvious to us manga readers when Eiji came forward and said "me and three others will be forming a group. We vow to stay here for as long as there is food as neither of us want to die. We're content with that." Yaba was not a fan of this and literally locked two of the men in a cell together so they'd forcefully die because they could seperate into other cells. Yaba and Banda actively did not want pacifists to win.

They didn't give a shit about anyone but themselves. Banda even asked Yaba if he cared about Kotoko, and when Yaba said he did, Banda replied that he would have just let her suffer. Yaba states this is why he can't get along with him. There's an implied weird boss and worker relationship with Yaba and Kotoko which brings in a power imbalance which is why he had such a strong hold on her. I don't think Yaba cared about her truly. I think he just liked having power over someone. And he can not have power over Banda. That much is obvious to him.

Anyway, back to my point, Banda and Yaba are actually very similar. I don't think I cheered at all when they won because yes, the Jack of Hearts was defeated but it was at the cost of the two worst men winning it. It wasn't truly a win, its supposed to be a "everyone fucking sucks here. No one won. They're all awful people."

Adding Chishiya in does imply its a good ending but in the manga it definitely was way more dark and depressing. Especially when Kotoko died because she actually did like Yaba a alot but she was manipulated heavily. She was actually a good person who got fucked over by everyone in this situation.

Yaba and Banda were not good people and were not supposed to be liked, the manga made that abundantly clear.

You can like em, I have no problem with that. But let's keep in mind when discussing the show that this was also originally a manga which had clear intentions in the writing. Aso Haro was very obvious in the way he wrote people which ones he wanted to be liked and which ones he didn't.
