A few more Headquarters song spotlights...
“Band 6 as you may remember was the Warner Brothers cartoon theme. Michael was learning pedal steel and played a little bit on it and we did this thing where Mike and I went, 'da, da dum…' and Micky’s going (makes crazy sounds) on the drums and it was absurd. Then Chip Douglas, who was our producer said, 'I think you got it Micky' and we burst into all together at the same speed and at the same time and ripped through it to our amazed surprise and joy. The fact that we were able to find a way to make that part of the record, that to me was the point of Headquarters. It was us wild guys, us crazy kids, doing the best we knew how with what we had. I listen to that album now and it’s tinny and a little bit like a teenage garage band and we weren’t teenagers any longer at that point but it had that teenage garage band vibe. It wasn’t as slick as the first two albums. I think things like Band 6 and Zilch and the fact that we were making the arrangements of these songs ourselves as we went on through it. I particularly remember working out the piano introduction to Shades of Grey and doing some arrangement ideas on Mr. Webster. I remember all that stuff and that was the great joy of it for me. Making the record and just being part of the overall creative process from the ground up; that’s what I live for.” - Peter Tork, Rock Cellar Magazine, 2016 “You Just May Be The One” features Peter on bass. And as for “I Can’t Get Her Off My Mind”: “Playing the tack piano was fun; that barrelhouse thing. It was a lot of fun playing [different] instruments on [Headquarters].” - Peter Tork, Headquarters CD liner notes “‘No Time’ was just a Chuck Berry rip-off. We assigned it to Hank [Cicalo], who got into a little trouble about it, because engineers are not supposed to solicit songs. When RCA saw his name on the thing they thought, ‘God, he solicited this tune.’ He had to go in there and explain it to them. It was just a tip.” - Peter Tork, Headquarters CD liner notes

The Monkees Headquarters
Original Album Favorite Song: Shades of Grey. Wonderful song about growing up and realizing the world isn't as simple as you thought it was. Least Favorite: Band 6. I mean, there's nothing there, it's basically just filler. It's a little funny, tho, once you find out they were trying to do the Looney Tunes theme.
Special Edition Favorite Song: Can't choose between All of Your Toys and The Girl I Knew Somewhere. Both are so amazing, and both should have been on the original album, you won't change my mind. Least Favorite: Jericho. I think this is the only Monkees song that I almost always skip when I binge listen to them. Yes, I hate this one strictly because they are making fun of a Bible story. I have that right.
Songs with more than one version and my favorite version is on this album I'll Spend My Life with You- The arrangement of the first version on More of the Monkees sounds too sweet. This one sounds sadder, more wistful, and I think the pedal steel contributes a lot to that. I Can't Get Her Off My Mind- I like how this version has that old-timey sound to it. The intro usually makes me think of Charlie Chaplin, it's that kind of sound. The Girl I Knew Somewhere- I honestly prefer Micky's version, just because I think Micky's voice works better with the instruments (I know nothing about music theory, but I would guess it has something to do with the key Micky's voice is in?). But I do wish they had mixed it as Micky's lead vocals with Peter and Davy's backing vocals (from the version with Mike's lead vocals). Once you hear Peter in the background- not to mention the harpsichord player (probably also Peter) going wild at the end of the song- the officially released version that we all know and love just sounds wrong. Wish I knew how to remix, I'd put Micky's vocals over Peter's backing track myself, just to see how it should have sounded. Pillow Time- Ok, call me crazy, but even if we throw out the banter (which I actually enjoy), I think we lost something by not having the repeat and Micky's zither in the Present version of Pillow Time. This one made it sound like it was supposed to be some psycho-jello dreamtime song, which I think would have worked well, considering it's a lullaby.

We've reached 'severely missing the animated portions of Rite Here Rite Now' hours so I started my own bare-bones animation inspired by that scene 🫡
If it's too hard to tell, I've got Nihil disguised as a "preppy Chad" character so he can spook Sister Imperator and then do a classic Scooby Doo reveal as himself haha. As for the music, I wasn't planning on backing it with anything but I realized Kiss the Go-Goat already sort of matched up so I think I'm gonna finish it with the song in mind (I slapped the audio onto this in imovie so if it's poorly balanced my bad lol)

Ok but guys isn't it actually crazy how Eugene Roe's presence is literally defined by the ineffable silence of God....ep 6 has no narrative voice beyond the languageless vision of Roe's literal perspective....he brings with him silence in every episode he's in like the chaos after Jackson blows himself up stills completely when Doc runs in - they all go silent & frozen & breathless - when any man is wounded the very concept of words beyond orders fail...he talks about how Renee is blessed to calm the wounded she treats but it's evident that he brings with him something even graver than calm; it's unutterable, literally, it's a prayer, it's a response to the silence we meet (Roe meets) in his prayers (it's a reflection on the insane power we - they - have over our own - and their own - mortality - that silent and sometimes apparently godlike capacity to return (to the front lines) from the dead (that hell of lost brotherhood in the hospitals)?)

What could be wrong with branch? And why does Brandy have so much experience with these symptoms?
Find out as this self indulgent comic comes becomes lazier with time.
