Elegant Red Banarasi Sarees Perfect for Wedding Celebrations
Origin of Saree:
The term 'Saree' finds its roots in the word 'Sattika,' meaning 'a woman's garment.' The origin of this draped attire can be traced back to the Vedic period of Indian cultural history, specifically during the time of Ramayana. During this ancient era, a Hindu belief emerged that sewing any fabric would render it impure. This belief played a pivotal role in the development and popularity of the unstitched form of clothing known as the saree over the centuries.
As time progressed, sarees assimilated the essence of diverse cultures in India, narrating a unique tale of their own. They became an integral part of women's attire, seamlessly blending history and artistry. Today, the saree, with its nine yards of free-flowing fabric, has become an iconic drapery and a symbol of innovation for Indian women. These sarees hold immense heritage value and are considered invaluable heirlooms, treasured, and passed down through generations within families.
BANARASI SAREES: A GLIMPSE INTO THEIR ORIGIN
Among the myriad captivating saree styles found across India, a few stand out as timeless classics, like the Kanjeevaram saree from Tamil Nadu, the Bandhani saree from Gujarat, and Paithani saree from Maharashtra. Another remarkable addition to this list is the famous Banarasi Saree, which exudes the luxurious charm of Varanasi. Renowned as the "Indian Sun," the Banarasi Saree is crafted from a special and exquisite type of silk that originated in the ancient city of Varanasi, nestled on the sacred banks of the Ganges.
Varanasi, also known as the spiritual capital of India, Banaras, or Kashi, is home to some of the finest weaving communities and age-old handloom traditions in the country. Initially created exclusively for royalty, the art of Banarasi weaving is said to have reached its pinnacle during the Mughal Empire, skillfully blending Mughal, Persian, and Indian influences. Artisans residing in Banaras at that time began crafting innovative designs using silk brocade, embellished with gold and silver zari threads, specifically for the Mughal rulers.
This craft became distinct with the incorporation of avant-garde Mughal-inspired elements in the designs, such as intricate floral motifs, kalga, bel, and jhala. The fusion of these cultural aesthetics birthed the elegant Banarasi Saree, a testament to the craftsmanship and artistic finesse of the weavers of Varanasi.
IMPORTANCE OF BANARASI SAREE IN INDIAN WEDDINGS
For centuries, silk has held a significant role in auspicious rituals and traditions within Hindu culture. Due to this profound importance, Banarasi sarees have become synonymous with wedding attire, particularly in Bengali and South Indian weddings. A timeless classic, the red and golden Banarasi saree emanates a radiant glow from every thread. Its appeal remains evergreen, never succumbing to passing trends. In India, red signifies "suhaag," representing marital bliss, while the word "Laal" evokes numerous emotions. Red also embodies Hindu Goddess Durga, symbolizing inner strength, new beginnings, and feminine power. In Vedic astrology, the planet Mars governs marriages, with red as its associated color. Universally, red represents love and passion. Hence, this color is chosen to signify marriage, love, strength, and fertility in India.
THE TIMELESS RED BANARASI SAREE:
Exuding sheer opulence and vibrant allure, the classic red Banarasi saree is an absolute masterpiece, particularly crafted for brides. Its resplendent sheen and deep chroma make it a truly exquisite work of art. Meticulously handwoven and adorned with intricate brocade patterns and the captivating hue of red, this saree bestows upon the bride an unparalleled elegance and an aura that is unmatched on her special day. Whether you opt for pure silk, organza, georgette, katan silk, or even hussar silk, the Banarasi saree becomes a cherished addition to the bridal trousseau, as well as a splendid choice for festive occasions.
Banarasis Enduring Love in Bollywood
Banarasi, a timeless classic, has become a beloved choice not only for brides but also for Bollywood celebrities. Anushka Sharma, at her wedding reception, dazzled in a beautiful red and golden Banarasi saree designed by Sabyasachi. She complemented her look with a red sindoor and bindi. Leading actresses like Rekha and Vidya Balan frequently grace their events in graceful Banarasi sarees, contributing to its everlasting craze among Bollywood divas. This elegant craft has not only captured the hearts of Bollywood but also finds a cherished place in the wardrobes of Indian women, who consider it a prized possession.
The craftsmanship behind Banarasi fabric holds a special place in the hearts of our talented karigars (artisans), and WeaverStory has been instrumental in supporting and empowering their work. We have collaborated with weavers, exploring various patterns and compositions, and inspiring them to unleash the true potential of their looms. Bhargavi Kunam Summer Collection
If you’re from Hyderabad and know a thing or two about traditional handlooms, you would have definitely heard about Bhargavi Kunam. The designer is known for her striking collection of handwoven Kanjeevaram sarees, Benarasi sarees and traditional bridal lehengas. Her eponymous label was started 13 years ago out of passion for conventional weaves and has now grown to become a household name for bridal garments in south India. Inspired by ancient Indian art, the designer includes many age-old elements into her designs, making each piece of Bhargavi Kunam a work of art.
Bhargavi Kunam Summer Collection
The sun is getting hotter by the day and all we can think of is sitting indoors while sipping on a chilled melon cooler. But we still got to show up at work, attend weddings and parties of our dear ones irrespective of the weather outside. Now finding outfits that look dressy but are also airy is quite the task. What if we were to tell you that, our very own Hyderabad based designer, Bhargavi Kunam dropped a collection that fits all your lists?
Tumblr media
Bhargavi Kunam has dropped her latest summer collection – The summer song, and we just can’t get over how comfy and breezy these outfits look. She has introduced summer fabrics like organza’s, chiffon’s and silks that are light and airy with understated embroidery details. Delicate thread embroideries, geometric saree borders and hand painted botanical floral designs complete this collection. Bhargavi Kunam has derived her inspiration from the Mughal paintings and architecture for her spring-summer collection. We have decoded her collection for you here, to make your work easier.
Bhargavi Kunam’s summer collection starts with some fresh organza’s in solid morning and evening hues and dainty thread work borders. The embroidery designs are mainly floral and geometric with clean cut sleeveless and halter neck blouses. The color palette is vibrant yet subdue with hues like rani-pink, taupe, pomegranate red, black and mud brown. Moreover, for those who like the extra oomph there are few blouses with balloon sleeves and textured half sleeves.
Tumblr media
Hand-painted botanical floral sarees Next in there are some pretty printed and hand-painted botanical floral designs on flowy silk fabrics. The designs are in soft contrast to the saree hues, with classy embroidery detailing on the borders. These super comfortable sarees have been paired with closed high necklines and sleeveless blouses. The colors range from muted tones like grey, lavender and peach nude to electric ultraviolet, navy blue and pastel green.
Tumblr media
Hand-painted Organza sarees
The Summer song by Bhargavi Kunam has some more light weight organza sarees. But this time with some beautiful hand painted botanical floral designs going all over the saree. Paired with some self and contrast sleeveless blouses, you can get them in dusty pastel hues of pale yellow, sea green and white.
Tumblr media
The sound of birds Bhargavi Kunam has also added few designs with chirpy bird motifs, that have been beautifully combined with the floral botanical designs. These breezy silk sarees are available in sunshine yellow, moss green and evening grey paired with contrast blouses.
