KILIMANJARO-12 DAYS NORTHERN CIRCUIT ROUTE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12 DAYS KILIMANJARO NORTHERN CIRCUIT ROUTE KILIMANJARO-12 DAYS NORTHERN CIRCUIT ROUTE with Kilipeak Adventure is the most amazing journey on Kilimanjaro. This is a relatively new route. Become one of the first to enjoy the Northern Circuit’s tranquility and stunning panoramic scenery. Starting from the west, this is the only route that travels north around Mt. Kilimanjaro. It traverses nearly the entire mountain before the summit push. This is absolutely the most scenic path available and has almost no traffic on its northern face. THE BEST MONTHS TO CLIMB KILIMANJARO Normally March, April, and May are the months with long rains and should be avoided. November is usually short rains but it does not often rain all the days so Climbing is possible. The best Months for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro are January, February, and also August and September. July can be colder and November to December can be wet. January to February is the warmest month, almost clear of clouds each evening and morning. The success rates with our guides are outstanding compared to the overall success rates for all climbers who attempt to reach the top. DAY 1: Arrive anytime at your lodging in Arusha, Tanzania. With prior arrangements, airport pick-up and private transfers to your lodge are available and arranged from Kilipeak Adventure’s office. We will gather in the evening for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance. Dinner and overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge: Bed, Dinner, and Breakfast included. DAY 2: After completing the necessary registration formalities at Londorossi National Park gate, we drive through varied farmland with open views over the plains to reach the Lemosho road head. We often have our lunch in the glades before starting to walk. It is an easy day of walking up a small path through the beautiful and lush forest. This area has a variety of game, including buffalo. We camp at Lemosho Forest camp (8,600 ft). DAY 3: We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. There is a tangible sense of wilderness, especially if afternoon mists come in! We camp in the center of the plateau at Shira One (11,600 ft). DAY 4: Today we explore the grassy moorland and volcanic rock formations of the plateau. We walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral (12,800 ft), a huge buttress of rock surrounded by steep spires and pinnacles. There is a tangible sense of wilderness here, especially when the afternoon mists roll in. From our camp near Shira Hut (12,600 ft), we take in the unforgettable views of Mt. Meru as she floats among the clouds. DAY 5: In the morning we follow the main trail up to Lava Tower (15,150 ft), and for those feeling strong, there is a possibility to climb up to the ruined hut at Arrow Glacier (15,700 ft). We then continue from Lava Tower to reach our campsite at Moir Hut (13,800 ft). DAY 6: We climb out of the Moir Valley and take a short detour to reach the summit of Lent Hills (15,400 ft). After admiring the views we return to the trail and head eastwards around the northern circuit trail. Here the trail passes through a field of rock slabs that clink as they are walked on. The final section of today’s walk undulates until reaching the location of Buffalo Camp (13,600 ft). At the camp, there is a huge feeling of space as the Kenyan plains stretch out far below to the north. DAY 7: From Buffalo Camp, we climb to the top of ‘Buffalo Ridge’ and cross numerous ridges and gullies. The trail continues eastwards through a landscape that has increasingly sparse vegetation to eventually reach Third Cave Camp (12,800 ft). DAY 8: There is a steady ascent to reach the saddle, a lunar landscape between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. From here we continue upwards and reach School Hut (15,500 ft) in the early afternoon. The remainder of the afternoon is spent resting and preparing for the summit day. DAY 9: We start the final and most demanding part of the climb by headlamp around 1 a.m. We plod very slowly in the darkness on a switchback trail through loose volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gilman’s Point (18,600 ft). We rest here for a short time to enjoy the spectacular sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the three-hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. We leave the summit heading northwest, down steep switchbacks for a short distance to Crater Camp (18,900 ft), where the rest of the crew will join us to set up camp. There is an option to hike Reusch Crater and the Ash Pit (19,140), or stay in the area and explore Furtwangler Glacier. Sleeping at this high altitude can be dangerous. Serious AMS can develop if adequate altitude acclimatization has not been achieved so the guides will monitor you very closely. DAY 10: We descend from Crater Camp (18,900 ft) stopping at Barafu Camp (14,800 ft) for lunch and continuing our descent. This goes surprisingly fast as we pass through the Alpine Desert to the Heather/Moorland Region and arrive at Millenium Camp (12,500 ft.) . DAY 11: A sustained descent on a well-constructed path takes us through a lovely tropical forest alive with birdsong and boasting lush undergrowth with considerable botanical interest. Our route winds down to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Mweka (5,400 ft); and on through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village, where we are transferred to your lodge in Arusha. Dinner and overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge: Bed, Dinner, and Breakfast included. DAY 12: ARUSHA TO KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: Depending on your flight schedule and departure point you will be transferred to the airport to connect your flight for further travel. KILIMANJARO -12 DAYS NORTHERN CIRCUIT ROUTE INCLUDES: • Tanzania VAT on tourism activities and park fees • Return transfers Kilimanjaro airport to Kia lodge and Arusha to Kilimanjaro airport • Hotel Lodging the night before and the night after the climb, with dinner and breakfast included (double occupancy) • Transfer from your hotel to starting point for your climb and return to your hotel after your climb • Large portions of fresh, healthy, nutritious food • All Kilimanjaro National Park gate fees, camping fees, and climbing permits. • Kilimanjaro National Park rescue fees (Kilimanjaro Rescue Team) • Emergency oxygen (for use in emergencies only – not as summiting aid) • Basic first aid kit (for use in emergencies only) • Qualified mountain guide, assistant guides, porters and cook • Salaries for the mountain crew as per guidelines set by Kilimanjaro National Park • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as hot drinks on the mountain • Camping equipment (tents, camp chairs, tables & sleeping mattress • Water for washing up daily • Porter to carry your duffel bag (max weight 15kg / 32 lbs) from one camp to the next camp. • Kilimanjaro National Park certificate for your successful summit attempt • Chemical Portable toilet KILIMANJARO- 12 DAYS NORTHERN CIRCUIT ROUTE EXCLUDES: • Flights and airport taxes • Items of a personal nature • Compulsory tips for guides, porters and cook (average tip is anything from the US $ 230 to the US $ 300 per hiker – depending on the number of days / how many hikers in the group and route chosen) • South African passport holders do NOT require a visa for Tanzania, however, most other nationalities require a visa for Tanzania • Health requirements (Yellow Fever compulsory if traveling to Tanzania recommended) • Highly recommended travel and medical insurance. • Personal hiking/trekking gear – we can rent some of the gear from our equipment store in Tanzania • Snacks, personal medicine, and water purifying tablets • Meals & drinks not specified and snacks. Moshi, Tanzania
We took a car to Moshi the next day, swapping Meru views for Kilimanjaro (which is so unbelievably wide and probably tall, but the top is currently enveloped in clouds so who really knows). We're staying in a little inn/hostel called the Secret Garden. It has an amazing balcony with views of Kilimanjaro (when the clouds clear) where everyone sits in the morning and evening. And rooms that are a slight upgrade to the Masai Mara tent. The food is very good and very cheap and the staff is fun and light hearted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A sunset and a mountain. An admirer.
We walked to and around the town center when we arrived. It's a very small town with nothing much to do but still plenty of people milling about. It's immediately obvious that we're in a different world (figuratively, of course) where no one has much of anything. The largest paper bill denomination is 10,000 shillings, which is equivalent to about $4.50. Cars stop for gas when they're nearly out and put just enough in to get them to their destination. Some people wear clothes made from beautiful bright patterned fabric, but you're more likely to see second or third hand clothes celebrating US high school football teams or declaring that "this guy [two thumbs pointing back] loves prom." The English Premier League seems to be a pretty big deal here. Every bar and every other dala dala (the terrifying minibuses that 15+ people cram into) is decked out with Arsenal or Chelsea insignias. The kids in their adorable school uniforms are always excited to see us. They greet us with wide smiles and waves, on one occasion adding in an observant "you are white!" They're not wrong.
On our second day here, we took a trip up to Marangu, a village on the south-eastern slopes of Kilimanjaro and the starting point of the "coca cola route" to the summit (named for its relative ease and the availability of sleeping huts and soda). We started at a Chagga cave where our guide David told us about the tribal wars between the Chagga and Masai people that started when the Masai migrated south, taking Chagga land, cattle, and lives nearly 300 years ago. We descended into the cave, which was more like a 16 km tunnel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It took 5 years to dig out using stone hand tools and the Chagga people hid there from the Masai for 15 years. The narrow tunnels widened slightly to produce small chambers where the women and children slept, cooked, and spent every hour except the single hour they went outside every day to bathe and soak up the sun. They even took their livestock underground. The entire compound was protected by Chagga soldiers who were stationed in tall hidey holes dug in just after the most narrow parts of the tunnel, ensuring they could take out any intruders one by one.
We visited a small coffee farm where we made a cup of coffee from bean to brew with traditional told and tasted the local banana beer and banana wine.
Tumblr media
WE SHRUNK NICK. Jk, David told us all about the plants in the area. He had Nick demonstrate this leaf umbrella.
Our hosts sang, danced, and drummed throughout the process. Then, we went down to the Ndoro waterfall where we had our box lunch surrounded by amazing scenery. If we've learned anything, it's that East Africans love to roast the hell out of a chicken, sending it to the afterlife with not a drop of moisture.
Tumblr media
Our final stop was the Chagga museum, where a very enthusiastic Chagga guy took us into a Chagga hut, showed us a bunch of weapons and tools, and talked way too much about diarrhea. He was amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a quick trip to the Marangu gate, where we climbed Kilimanjaro in like 30 second, we headed back for our last night before heading to the coast!

It was my last day in Arusha and I wanted to hike up Mount Meru and swim in one of its waterfalls. I left at 6:30am as I wanted to be there before anybody deciding to escape the midday heat. I noticed that I was the only one headed up the mountain. I passed men in their polished shoes exaggerating their walk in order to get the least amount of dirt and womxn, dropping their children at school, lifting the hem of their Shuka (Cloth) so the hem does not brown. The streets were lined with little shops and when those would end, you would be greeted with plots of sustenance farms. There were families collecting wild banana leafs and firewood to be used for their homes. I reached a resort with manicured lawns and tiled walkways. I was not at my destination. There are two waterfalls: one frequented by tourists and another only known to locals. The carried on. After 30 minutes, I reached a crossroads and proceeded left. "Are you going to the waterfalls?" said a 14yo boy. "Shouldn't you be in school?". It was a Saturday but I could not be bothered. It can become annoying when every man with a smile wants to offer you a tour or a good deal. The boy, Kasana, and his friend, Lekuton, accompanied me for the sole reason of being rewarded in kind. It was a calculated decline to the forest floor. The Tanzanian Wildlife Park had built constructed wooden rails but the 2 Masaai teenagers found no need as they burst in sprints down. I took a more calm approach. We began winding across the Themi river, flowing from springs on atop Mount Meru, hopping across rocks as we neared waterfall. One had to be careful of the hollow figs being dropped by the Colobus monkeys in the tree tops. "It is good you came early because you are lucky to see the monkeys". The trumpet flowers sprouting out the thick, and tangled jungle was breathtaking. Suddenly, the sound of water crashing excited me. We walked through a cave of moss covered boulders before, behold...the wonders of God's creation. I removed my shoes and got right in. The rocks beneath me were slippery from moss and the water was freezing. I didn't care because I was hot and tired. I spent some time taking it all in. It was beautiful. (at Arusha, Tanzania)

For smaller groups pricing can be similar and sometimes less expensive than regular expedition prices listed on the website. For larger groups, the price may be similar to our posted prices but the private option is an excellent way to ensure you are receiving a level of attention that is determined by your particular needs. After we receive your booking we will send you the trip note with your booking confirmation, as it is the final definitive statement of inclusions and trip details, and it forms an essential part of our booking contract with you. Both to assist your understanding and to avoid any misunderstandings. Our trips are for active, flexible-minded people who enjoy the unusual and adventurous. For trips that have an emphasis on mountain trekking and wildlife safari, you need to remember that even the easiest trekking or walking safari involves some exertion, so you should be reasonably fit and sure that you will enjoy the activity. DAY 1: ARRIVE IN TANZANIA. Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), we will use our private transfer from the Airport to Arusha Safari Lodge. We will gather in the evening for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check. We will also confirm you have the appropriate mandatory medical coverage and travel insurance. Dinner and overnight at Arusha Safari Lodge: Bed, dinner, and Breakfast-included. DAY 2: MACHAME GATE TO MACHAME HUT (FULL BOARD) After breakfast we will drive to Machame gate then completing the necessary registration formalities at Machame National Parkgate, we begin to trek through a beautiful and lush forest. We have a picnic lunch en route. We camp at Machame Camp (9,800 ft). DAY 3: MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP (FULL BOARD) We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily through rocky hills with wide views of the Shira Plateau (11,000 ft). From our camp near Shira Hut (12,600 ft), we take in the unforgettable views of Mt. Meru as she floats among the clouds. DAY 4: SHIRA CAMP TO BARRANCO VALLEY (FULL BOARD) A morning of sustained ascent and panoramic views brings us to lunch near Lava Tower (14,900 ft). The trail then descends to the bottom of the Barranco Valley (12,800 ft), where we stay in the spectacular Barranco Camp sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below. DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP (FULL BOARD) A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Icefields. The terrain changes to scree, with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows, and there is only a short distance to our camp at Karanga Camp (13,100 ft), the last water point on the approach to the summit. DAY 6: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP (FULL BOARD) We follow an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach Barafu Hut (14,800 ft) for lunch. There is a short acclimatization hike to the plateau at the bottom of the southeast valley (15,700 ft). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the early morning final ascent. DAY 7: BARAFU CAMP TO SUMMIT TO MWEKA CAMP (FULL BOARD) We start our ascent by torchlight about 1 a.m. so that we can be up on the crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (18,800 ft), in about five or six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the two-hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshments, we continue to descend to reach our final campsite, Millenium Camp (12,500 ft). DAY 8: MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE TO ARUSHA (HALF BOARD) A sustained descent on a well-constructed path takes us through a lovely tropical forest alive with birdsong and boasting lush undergrowth with considerable botanical interest. Our route winds down to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate at Mweka (5,400 ft); and on through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village, where we are transferred to our lodging in Arusha. Dinner and overnight at Arusha Safari Lodge: Bed, dinner, and Breakfast-included. DAY 9 DEPARTING DAY: After saying bye to our team of guides then you need a private departure transfer which is included from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight unless you have an option to have a short safari or any other option we will discuss.
