Vatican Experts Restore Ancient Gilded Hercules Statue Struck by Lightning
Scaffolding in a niche of the Vatican Museums’ Round Hall conceal from view the work of restorers who are removing centuries of grime from the largest known bronze statue of the ancient world: the gilded Hercules Mastai Righetti.
For more than 150 years, the four-meter-tall (13-foot-tall) figure of the half-human Roman god of strength has stood in that niche, barely garnering notice among other antiquities because of the dark coating it had acquired.
But it was only after removing a layer of wax and other material from a 19th-century restoration that Vatican experts understood the statue's true splendor as one of the most significant gilded statues of its time. Museum-goers will be able to see its grandeur for themselves once the restoration is finished, which is expected in December.
“The original gilding is exceptionally well-preserved, especially for the consistency and homogeneity,” Vatican Museum restorer Alice Baltera said.
The discovery of the colossal bronze statue in 1864 during work on a banker’s villa near Rome's Campo dei Fiori square made global headlines.
Visitors drawn to the ancient wonder at the time included Pope Pius IX, who later added the work to the papal collection. The statue depicting Hercules after he finished his labors had the last names of the pope — Mastai — and of the banker, Pietro Righetti, added to its title.
The inscription FCS accompanying the statue on a slab of travertine marble indicates it was struck by lightning, according to Claudia Valeri, curator of the Vatican Museums department of Greek and Roman antiquities. As a result, it was buried in a marble shrine according to Roman rites that saw lightning as an expression of divine forces.
FCS stands for "fulgur conditum summanium, a Latin phrase meaning “Here is buried a Summanian thunderbolt.” Summanus was the ancient Roman god of nocturnal thunder. The ancient Romans believed that not only was any object stricken imbued with divinity, but also the spot where it was hit and buried.
"It is said that sometimes being struck by lightning generates love but also eternity,’’ Vatican Museums archaeologist Giandomenico Spinola said. The Hercules Mastai Righetti “got his eternity … because having been struck by lightning, it was considered a sacred object, which preserved it until about 150 years ago.”
The burial protected the gilding, but also caused dirt to build up on the statue, which Baltera said is very delicate and painstaking to remove. “The only way is to work precisely with special magnifying glasses, removing all the small encrustations one by one,” she said.
The work to remove the wax and other materials that were applied during the 19th-century restoration is complete. Going forward, restorers plan to make fresh casts out of resin to replace the plaster patches that covered missing pieces, including on part of the nape of the neck and the pubis.
The most astonishing finding to emerge during the preliminary phase of the restoration was the skill with which the smelters fused mercury to gold, making the gilded surface more enduring.
“The history of this work is told by its gilding. … It is one of the most compact and solid gildings found to date,’’ said Ulderico Santamaria, a University of Tuscia professor who is head of the Vatican Museums' scientific research laboratory.

The Siege
CHAPTER 1
Act.1
Dawn is breaking, sunrays slowly shining through the lands of Winggets. An unknown group is slowly gathering on top of mountainous terrain. These groups are a mix of soldiers and mercenaries alike that gathered together in order to prepare for the decisive battle. Readying themselves to launch an attack on the enemy-occupied Corona Citidom below. Citidom, a vast vicinity that is confined in a fixed area wherein a community of Able resides and is living within its society. Having commerce, industry, military, and politics as its primary objective, and are under the authority as well as ruled by a Precider. Both soldier and mercenary groups drew out their weapons, ready to take orders from the ones who are leading them. While everybody was busy mustering their courage, a young male with soft and vibrant white hair slowly walks up in front of the gathering troops. Having an average height of five feet and eight inches, this young lad has a firm and strong posture yet at the same time gives an aura of gentleness; resembling that of nobility. Feeling the mildness of the morning wind caressing his face as he overlooks the entire landscape waiting for someone or something. Bearing a scar in the shape of an arrow covering the left side area of his eye, it served as a reminder of what was about to unfold soon. This young able holds within himself the task he must fulfill for his people as well as the revenge he had sworn to take. He is Lox Winder, the Me-reet of Corona, and sole successor of the late Precider Winder. Accompanying him eventually is his most trustful and loyal soldier-knight Universe. Both of them gazed at the entire field whilst discussing strategies they have already formulated one last time.
Corona is a remotely placed citidom that was once a peaceful and bustling site that had been reduced into a prison-like fortress by its conqueror. Heavily occupied by an independent military group composed of mages and soldiers within its rank. They were recognized as the Solaris Magi Organization, an independent military state that is very elusive to the eyes of all Ablekind. Their goal is unknown, and their motives are sometimes bewildering. Not settling in a fixed area, these groups move from one place to another. They never bothered the citidoms, and almost disappeared instantly without a trace. For many years and even generations this is what they’ve been doing, and so are left alone; until one day, they decided to invade the citidom of Corona. As they view the corrupted citidom from above the mountains, Lox recalled his dark past, the cause, and origin for his path of vengeance.
Ten years ago, Corona was suddenly invaded by Solaris lead by none other than their supreme commander, the Prime-Magi. Their intention was to lock down the entire place whilst searching for an object called the Alpha Rune. The object was placed within the top of the Royal Dwellings central tower and served as the families heirloom. Three days -- before the forcible occupation on the citidom took place -- the Prime-Magi was able to hold on to a piece of information about a certain heirloom that closely described what he had been searching for. With this, he moves without a second thought and immediately planned his upcoming invasion. Due to the element of surprise the citidom’s army was unable to prepare itself from the invaders and so was subdued effortlessly. After the place was slowly filled with Solarian troops, the Prime-Magi immediately headed towards the central tower but as he was about to enter, the main entrance was barricaded and was heavily guarded by the Royal Valiants. Being the most elite of all the Soldier-Knights and the last line of defense for the royal family of Winder, they stood their ground defeating any Solarians that tried to make their way towards the tower entrance before barricading themselves within; this was not the case for the Prime-Magi. With a simple swing of his right arm he destroyed the barricades with ease, and defeated the Soldier-Knights with his Magicka then afterward he proceeded to enter the lift leading to the chamber were the Alpha Rune is. As the Prime-Magi was about to enter the chamber he was greeted by another Soldier-Knight. This Soldier-Knight tried to thrust his lance but was blocked by an invisible power. The Prime-Magi already used a spell called Wall, blocking any physical attacks within proximity. He deflected his attacker and trap him inside a Magicka prison then drew himself closer to the terrified royal family. Precider Winder held tight his son but was dragged out by the Prime-Magi’s psychokinetic ability. He questioned the enemy's motive as he slowly levitates towards him, the Prime-Magi only responded with a question and asked the Precider about the Alpha Rune, in which to no avail got an undesired answer from him. Infuriated by his response, the Prime-Magi placed his left palm on the Precider’s chest, then suddenly his spirit was slowly gushing out from his body and into the enemy's hand. He was asked once more, the Precider could feel himself getting weaker, yet he still refused to answer. As the Prime-Magi was about to end Precider’s misery, a young Lox suddenly ran towards him and called his attention. He told the Prime-Magi that he remembered a certain object before it was hidden. It was delightful news to the enemy, and without further hesitation the young boy was asked about its location. Lox walked towards a table in a small stage, he looks at it and it was empty. He then activated a hidden key that eventually revealed a dark glowing object sealed within a Magicka barrier. The Prime-Magi was awed as he was staring at the Alpha Rune but then noticed the Magicka seals wrapped closely to it. He was aware that it was protected by Magicka and deshelling the Alpha Rune would not be an easy task; but the Prime Magi stayed optimistic and calm. He knew as well that it will require him a lot of time and so was the planned invasion brought up firsthand.
Lox can still remember, he was eight back then when he saw how the Prime Magi absorbed the life out of his father's body, Lox could only scream and cry for his loss. Tears filled the boy’s eyes but then became furious, and so, he dashed towards the enemy screaming in a rage without even bothering to think how he will be able to defeat such a powerful foe. The Prime-Magi tried to used Magicka with his right hand however Lox leaped and grabbed his hand first. The enemy tried to shake him off but the boy held tight on his hand. With a strong swing, the Prime-Magi finally shoved Lox away that hurt the boy in the process as well as wounded his left eye. Just as the enemy was about to cast a petrifying spell, the imprisoned soldier-knight was able to free himself and immediately grabbed the young me-reet and escaped through busting towards a glass window pane. This soldier-knight was unlike any other, it was Universe -- the ever-loyal servant to the royal family -- as well as Lox’s personal guard. Universe was able to cast gravity down in order to cut the speed of their fall then after which he escaped; avoiding enemy contact as he was carrying the young me-reet on his right arm. The Prime-Magi ignored the fleeing two and proceeded towards his primary goal. Unable to do anything, Lox could only watch, as the place he calls home was being desecrated by Solarians. The young boy’s tears started to flow once more as he uttered to himself that he will surely return to save Corona and have his revenge against the Prime Magi.
Back in the present, Lox was still within his thought when suddenly a dark-winged object flew past towards him and Universe. The soldier-knight recognized the person as one of their allies. With a daring landing as his entrance and accompanied by his two captains Ramon Baltera and Sonnet Soltim, it was none other than the leader of the mercenary group riding his partnered Black Chocobo named Tempo. Possessing massive wings provided these Chocobos the ability to fly and are a rarity amongst their yellow cousins. As the mercenary leader quickly unmounted from his ride, he then once again introduced himself to Lox and Universe.
Bass Reminisce, the six feet and two inches tall, black spiky-haired young lad with matching cloth for a bandana wrap around his forehead, while having a positive and happy-go-lucky attitude was the one in charge of the mercenary group call the Freedom for Hire. Bass tried to get close to Lox in order to relay the report but was blocked by Universe, who was standing at around seven feet and one inch tall. The soldier-knight was so huge that he cast a shadow over him. Seeing that there is still issues regarding trust with them, Bass respected the thought and explained his report within a distance to the two. Under his report, he scouted the place for any formidable foes that Universe described to him before he proceeded and found none them visible. He followed up his report of enemies surrounding the outer perimeter that are slightly relaxed and unaware of their presence. This pleased Lox very much, and through that he examined the entire liberation group one last time. He looks at Universe that nodded back at him; looks at Bass who then gave a thumbs up. Lox closed his eyes for a moment, he felt the gentle wind touching his cheeks once more. He opened his eyes with a firm gaze then rode his Chocobo; he raised his sword high and yelled at the top of his lungs "For My Father!! For Corona!!".
Both Soldiers and Mercenaries of the liberation group did their battle cries as they charged towards the east, west, and south main entrance of Corona Citidom. Bass together with his Black Chocobo Tempo flew ahead while following behind him are Sonnet and Ramon, trying to keep their pace with their regular Chocobo. As they followed their leader, Sonnet tries to remind Bass not to act recklessly and that he needs to be extra cautious, to which Bass only responded that he was not. Sonnet Soltim the ever timid girl member of the Freedom for Hire mercenary group, and one of the captains. She is petite by height and also wears a yellow bandana that covers her entire hair. Her affiliation with Bass goes back when they became friends while they were still kids and now are inseparable allies.
The second captain agrees with Sonnet and advised Bass to stay focus on the plan. Ramon Baltera, a big young male of few words yet is relied on by Bass to help him lead the group. Just like Sonnet, he wore a yellow bandana wrapping his head and is one of the founding members of the Freedom for Hire mercenary group. Ramon and Bass were friends while they were still kids along with Sonnet and since then the three trusted each other like brothers and sisters. Bass knew the two captains were just worried about him, and so he smiled and told them that he will be fine. Together they dash forward hoping to get a bonus from the young me-reet who hire them. Just a few minutes later, one Solaris guard noticed the charging party and immediately sounded the alarm. He was about to radio the main base within the citidom when Bass swooped in and denied him the chance to do so. The three main gates were successfully breached, and the fierce battle between Solaris and the liberation group had begun. Inside the Solaris military base, the soldier-mages hastily prepared themselves to counter the reclaimers; one of these soldier-mage smirked before putting his helmet on. The battle continued as the rushing main party of Lox and Universe eventually arrived at the central plaza of Corona. The young me-reet recognized the front gates heading to the royal dwelling, but as they were about to move towards it, they were blocked by enemy’s air units. Initiating the retaliation over the reclaimers and buying enough time for the cavalry to arrive at the center plaza. Lox’s group was in a pinched when all of a sudden a black Chocobo flew upward then dropping from above was none other than Bass, who immediately attacked the enemies hindering the group of Lox. Using his Buster Blade and his Cerberus Shotgun he eliminated three of the enemies, and as the remaining two were about to attack him, they were caught off-guard by Sonnet and Ramon who used their Guncrossbows and shoot their enemies down with explosive rounds. As the battle ended Bass and his captain gathered up with the Lox’s group. The young me-reet thanked the mercenary leader for his aide, and as they were about to proceed, Universe called their attention. The enemy’s air unit was able to hold the group of Lox long enough and so the cavalry of Solarian soldier-knights mounted in their rough-rider bikes have finally arrived. The soldier-knights of the enemy readied their Gunclaymore as they let their bikes engine roar, signaling that they are about to assault them. Universe tells Lox to prepare himself to dash towards the front gate, but the young me-reet got confused instead. He asked why he should be going ahead instead of fighting alongside them, and so Universe looked at him and tells him that he needs to stop the Prime-Magi before it gets even worse. The worried Lox was still not convinced when suddenly Bass tapped his shoulder. Bass smiled and tells him that it’s okay and that he needs to trust Universe and his group’s strength. Bass ordered Sonnet and Ramon to cover the main group for support against the enemy, and so the two backed Universe up. Lox looks at his loyal soldier-knight one last time afterward rushed towards the front gate along with Bass.
Meanwhile at the stairs of the royal dwelling just near the inner side of the front gates, a mysterious person, with ginger hair matched with concentrated blonde highlights in the front, and standing about six feet tall, was sitting in a slouch position, idly waiting for something to happen. He wears a short robe like a cape, baring the insignia forming that of the legendary dragon Bahamut, that covered almost the entire back of his sleeveless suit. This person was no civilian for he carries with him his weapons that signifies his involvement with the conflict that’s currently happening between two opposing groups. Universe and the main group started to engage their battle with the Solarian soldier-knights. Meanwhile Lox together with Bass is continuously running towards the front gate. Lox noticed something odd about the gate, he threw one of his grenades at it and to his dismay the gate was unscathed. Bass who got worried about the gate being firm and hard was suddenly panicking while running. The young me-reet then to told him about his plan, as he was listening to Lox’s idea he began to show confidence once more, and both agreed as the two push forward heading straight towards the fortified front gate. This mysterious person sensed the arrival of Bass and Lox, and so he stood up and readied his two swords; he was then joined by the soldier-mages who took their battle positions. Unlike the soldier-mage of Solaris that only uses Gunstaves as their weapon, armed with magi-bullets; bullets having element or non-element attributes, the mysterious person on the other hand uses a very intriguing weapon called the Gunblade. Gunblades are special kind of weapons, that uses two very unique systems. When a gun-type and a blade type weapon integrate together the system is called Harmonize and if they are being used individually or are separated into two is called Desolate. Few people used this weapon, because one must be able to have an exceptional skill to wield both with ease and by using the Harmonize system, the wielder shall be rewarded with an even stronger attack for a brief moment of time. Combining the gun and blade type for too long would result in overheating, that eventually stresses the two weapons, and could cause irregular functions.
Just outside the gate, Lox and Bass placed all the explosive devices that they carried on the gate and afterward remotely set the timer to ten seconds then immediately took their cover; as they wait. Sensing the approach of Lox and Bass, the mysterious person, prepares his twin fire drake caliber pistol and two wyvern edge sword. His instinct tells him that the approaching two are not grunts but those who lead the reclaimers. The time was up and so the gates burst inward, and the two make their way through the stairs, however, they were greeted by Solarian soldier-mage that started shooting them. With a sense of urgency, Lox activates the Harmonize system of his weapon and the two became one. A fully automatic carbuncle assault rifle merged with his personal double edge rapier and charged towards the open firing soldier-mages. While the young me-reet was busy fighting the soldier-mages, Bass who already fended off the enemies on his side noticed the mysterious person blocking the entrance to the tower. He quickly ran towards the enigmatic enemy while calling his avian friend. Though Lox -- who saw Bass rushing towards an unknown enemy -- wanted to help was too preoccupied with the soldier-mages that he apparently had the bigger share than the charging mercenary leader had fought a while ago. Bass who is now riding his Black Chocobo Tempo went after the mysterious enemy and prepared his weapon for Harmonize, a Zweihander buster blade combined with his double-barreled Cerberus shotgun. Using Tempo’s back, he leaps from above and towards the enemy in front of him. As Bass was about to strike, the mysterious person quickly changed his stance and Harmonize as well as his two weapons to form his Gunblade. Both weapons clashed, and both knew it was the start of their battle. The two fought and continued to show each other’s strength in combat.
On the other hand, Lox who is currently exhausted from defeating all soldier-mages, was about aid Bass against a mysterious foe when he suddenly saw something familiar from the tower window. Though far above the top, and no longer visually clear, the young me-reet will never forget the figure he so despised off. With glowing yellow eyes, and the black mask covering his mouth, it was none other than the Prime-Magi himself. Lox’s anger slowly bursting from the inside, the young me-reet neglected his exhaustion and slowly gained back his strength. He screamed in rage as he rushes swiftly towards the tower path while defeating every soldier-mage that hindered his way. Bass noticed that Lox was recklessly charging towards the tower, however, the mysterious enemy was an obstacle that cannot easily be defeated.
On top of one of a building just near the area of the Royal Dwelling, another mysterious person is viewing the young me-reet, who is making his way towards the entrance of the tower. This six feet five inches tall with a very long radiating light blonde hair quickly draws out his own weapon, a phoenix wing sniper rifle, his blade type weapon which he did not use is irregular Z formed Daito sword. He points his rifle to the enraged me-reet and as he saw his face through the scope he then saw something. Something he remembered; a memory he sought for, thinking that it had been suppressed for a long time. Seeing that he cannot put himself to eliminate the target, he withdrew from the scene and vowed to finish the job when he is ready.
As Lox is slowly getting closer to the tower’s main entrance, Bass was still busy fighting his unshakable enemy. Through their battle, the young mercenary leader realized that his foe was not even trying his best to defeat him, sensing something really odd from the fight. The battle continued until one of the soldier-mage finally called the attention of the mysterious enemy. Telling him that the time has come for them to move. Without any second thought the mysterious enemy quickly withdraw from the battle and joined the soldier-mage who was also running towards the tower. Bass who got pissed was also a bit ridiculed from the enemy’s sudden withdrawal. Unable to follow the enemy immediately, he then contacted his two captains.
At the central plaza, the main party had been wiped out, leaving only Universe, Sonnet, and Ramon that are the only ones standing. Sonnet received a call from Bass, asking about their situation. She was about to respond but the enemy soldier-knights immediately attacked them. Bass heard the explosion from the other side that eventually made him worried. With a strong panicking voice, the young mercenary leader tried to ask for a response from them. To his relief, Sonnet tells Bass that they got in an awful situation however the rest of the Liberation group finally caught up with them. Luckily the explosion he heard came from one of the liberation group’s artillery units, and so the battle between the Solarian soldier-knights resumed once more. The liberation group outnumbered the enemy soldier-knights giving Universe and the rest to fall back for a while. Taking the chance, Universe then asked if the young me-reet was alright, and Bass responded that he was about to follow Lox inside the tower. Universe knew he shouldn’t leave the young me-reets side but seeing their situation, and trusting the young me-reet’s abilities to hold on his own, he had no other choice but take any possible chances that they can get. The Coronoian soldier-knight asked the Bass for a favor, to which the young mercenary leader was all ears for it. Universe tells him to hold their ground until he is able to catch up with them. Bass got the message, and so he begins his move to follow Lox. Detaching his Gunblade back to Desolate mode, Bass briefly looks at the tower then afterward ran swiftly towards inside it.
Within the tower, Lox immediately went to the lift but unfortunately it wasn’t working since the power section from it was deactivated. This made the young me-reet even more furious than ever. Left without any other choice he took the longer route and so he ran up the spiral staircase. Without thinking about any possible traps or danger lurking inside, the Lox’s thought of avenging his father was already fixed. Finally the young me-reet made it to the top of the tower while barely catching his breath. Still feeling dizzy from exhaustion, he tries his best to view the entire chamber looking for the Prime-Magi. Shortly enough the supreme ruler of Solaris Magi Organization did not disappoint him and was greeted with utmost intention in mind. Seeing that the Prime-Magi was right in front of him, the young me-reet became so infuriated that he immediately used Harmonize to form his gunblade, and quickly dashed towards the enemy. Lox was dead center on thinking about defeating his nemesis but the Prime-Magi effortlessly cast an ailment spell called STOP on the charging me-reet. Lox’s body became stationary; unable to move a single inch from any part.
Sensing something familiar from the young me-reet but is unable to discern what it was, the Prime-Magi proceeded with his tall tale. He tells him about a certain part of the origins of the planet that had been omitted in the stories. Although Lox had no plan on listening to the Prime-Magi’s story, he was forced to do so. STOP, is a spell that prevents the movement of one object for a period of time, and since the one who cast it was the Prime-Magi, it became likable for it to be on a higher level, which means that the spell’s duration would be quite long. Slowly walking forth towards the motionless me-reet, Lox could only glare with anger as the Prime-Magi was about to begin his revelation.
Act. 2
The Prime-Magi tells him about the history of the planet Eden, and how a very powerful Magi-energy was sealed within the Alpha Rune; just waiting to be extracted by him. He then tells Lox that inside the rune itself lies the sleeping essence of Eve the one true spirit and embodiment of the planet. Though she was recognized as the organization’s Goddess and their bringer of eternal paradise, to the Prime-Magi she was meant to be even more. An obsession he openly embraced. He also explained to the young me-reet that he sympathizes Eve’s suffering from the selfish acts of the six Adam and when she is released, her wrath will be unleashed that would eventually lead to the planet’s destruction. Lox, who was contemplating inside, began to ask himself; Eve shall be Eden’s destruction yet the Prime-Magi wishes to release unseal her from the Alpha Rune. To the mind of the young me-reet it was utterly confusing and big nonsense. Unaware of the Prime-Magi’s capability to mind read, and so the two resumed there conversation through telepathy. Enemy answered the young me-reet’s pondering question, and so took a few steps back as sudden electric currents flowed through his body while shooting lightning bolts from every corner of the chamber. He turns around to look at Lox then finally revealed himself as Thundaga, the seventh Adam. The young me-reet couldn’t believe what he just heard. He wasn’t convinced with what the enemy has revealed but the Prime-Magi just laugh at the sight of Lox being unable to accept such reality. He then floats toward the young me-reet and held his left hand on Lox’s head. A fragment of the Prime-Magi’s memory was thrust to his mind as he saw a glimpse of the creation of the planet. He let go of Lox and went near the Alpha Rune that is currently being unsealed by his magick.
The Prime-Magi continued his discussion with Lox, he then explained to him that the current body of the Prime-Magi was from an Able that was long dead. He further specified that the body he possessed was just a mere empty husk that preserved him as he tries to regain his full strength, this is due to the fact that they are beings made out of pure Magicka that is continuously surging from their body, and thus needed a vessel that will serve as a container. He tells the young me-reet that like Eve he was also sealed by his brother, when he gave his protest against dividing her and after his brothers found out about his secret partaking on the creation of the planet. He was forbidden to participate, since he was not yet qualified, however after her creation, his brothers never knew that he gave a special gift to the planet’s essence. Magicka, energy reserved only for beings like the Adams was Thundaga’s ultimate offering to Eve. The youngest Adam then tells her at her sleep that it shall be their secret. Thundaga revealed to Lox that he was the first one to fell in love with Eve but wasn't given any chance by his brothers seeing that he is the youngest among the siblings.
While he was sealed, he found out from one of his brothers that Eve was slowly destroying herself. He realized that he gave her the power to do such atrocity. Thundaga begged his brothers to let him go, to let him try to speak some sense to Eve, unfortunately, the other Adams were so distracted with Eve’s outrage that failed to notice him. As soon as the six prevented the catastrophe and successfully sealed Eve, Thundaga was left alone within his brother’s seal. As time passed by, the seal slowly became weak, and so Thundaga was free once more. He then explained that he and Eve never got the chance to know each other. He further added that that soon will change, he shall unleash her from her eternal slumber, afterward introduce himself and his love for her. In order to prove this, he will help her destroy Eden. Thundaga reverted back to his Prime-Magi persona and turned his sight to the motionless Lox one last time. He bids the young me-reet farewell as he charges his hands with pure lightning energy ready to be fired directly at him.
As the Prime-Magi was about to launch his devastating attack on the helpless Lox, A unexpected attack from out of nowhere distracted him. Rapid gravity shots that came from the soldier-mage's customized submachine gun having an unusual toy chain near the grip part. Swinging around, this toy looked like a pale toned creature having a red ball for a nose, and sticking out on top of its head is a very thin antenna that has another red ball attached to it, then a pair of small purple bat wings on its back. The Prime-Magi was able to block the with his Protect spell, however, the impact of the shots was so strong it knocks him back from his current position. This gave the mysterious person whom Bass fought, an opportunity to attack the unwary enemy. Unable to react on time, the Prime-Magi was assaulted by the mysterious person using Harmonize to form his dual Gunblades. The fight was very unpredictable, that they continued to clash above the chamber grounds. He relentlessly attacked the enemy but to no avail was unable to land a single blow from him. Unexpectedly the villain showed his power to teleport multiple times avoiding each and every strike his assailant does. Finally the mysterious person used his keen sense to predict his enemy’s next move. With a sudden swing from a fixed pointed area, he was able to land a cross slash to the Prime-Magi that sent him further towards the ceiling. As the mysterious person landed, he was immediately joined by the defector soldier-mage. He asked the mysterious person if he defeated the enemy, but he only continued to look above and then replied that it’s not yet over. Both of them looked at the ceiling as rubbles and clouds of dust starting to uncover the unyielded foe. Even with such a devastating blow, the enemy was not harmed, afterwards, he teleported on top of the chandelier. The Prime-Magi questioned such outrageous actions from the two, however, the defector soldier-mage asked for the enemy to come down from the chandelier instead. Ignoring his request, the enemy indicated their action as an act of betrayal and tells them that only severe punishment awaits them. The ex-soldier-mage gave a short sigh; slowly removing his helmet in order to reveal himself. A short-haired brunette coupled with a twin tail on its back, having an average height of five feet and seven inches in a half, has two horizontally paralleled dash on his upper right cheek. Now able to speak clearly, he explained their side of the story. He was a Thaumaturgist Able, a sub-race that has the capability to tap on the power of Magicka. With this he was scouted then eventually recruited by one of the Solarian agents. Learning to use his innate ability he then became a soldier-mage, troopers that imbue Magicka to their weapons specifically the ammunitions. He had the potential to become an Archmage --the highest position any low-ranked soldier-mage is able to attain--, but he chose not to. Not long after he was transferred from Ozma Fortress to Corona, he met the mysterious person, who was a mercenary hired by the Solarians, with a stoic characteristic, the two eventually became some sort of buddies. As he was doing his rounds on the streets of the citidom, he notices that the place was only filled with the Solarian army and few people are able to go out and do their usual work. He also noticed that the travelers that pass through the main gates are required to have their eyes scanned all the time. He then remembers the scanners were used to them as well however, all Solarian units undergo a full head scan instead. He then realized that something was not right. Being skillful in infiltrating, he hacked through the Solarian’s main system and discovered the dark truth behind the organization’s occupation of Corona. A week before the attack of the Liberation group, He met up with the mysterious person and explained to him their current situation. He also added that the scanning device was actually a brainwashing tool to prevent unnecessary circumstances. The two then devised a plan to sabotage and broadcast the citidom’s current situation from the hands of their oppressors. They also plan to reveal to the other citidom’s and its capitals all over Eden about a great threat prepared by the Prime-Magi and his associates within the Solaris Magi Organization.
The Prime-Magi was a bit uneasy due to the threat they provide for him, but he was more curious about the defector’s status, seeing that he wasn’t affected by the device that’s supposed to alter the emotion, and so he asked him about it. The defector smirked and tells the villain that he had no idea, however, he was lucky to have such immunity. The Prime-Magi could only stare at the witty soldier-mage response, as bolts surging out from his eyes. Breaking his silence, the mysterious mercenary tells the enemy that he was hired to protect what his clients want him to protect and being part of the world’s destruction was not in his contract. The enemy’s uneasiness grew even more; charges of electric bolts starting to form on both his hands. The opposing two readied their Gunblades, then with a loud voice the soldier-mage asked the Prime-Magi about the location of the bomb. The enemy reverted back to his calm composure whilst the charges from his hands slowly decimates. They also told the Prime-Magi that they already noticed something strange from him and by that the two agreed to stop this madness. With a demure laugh, the Prime-Magi slowly descends from the top as he plans to greet his unwanted guest. He made it clear to the both of them that there was no such bomb but gave them an assurance --his feet touch the ground-- that the planet’s destruction was inevitable.
The two immediately charged towards the ever-confident Prime-Magi, ignoring Lox who was still under the enemy’s spell. Together with their might they tried to subdue their adversary, and the fight between the two defectors and the Prime-Magi continued. While the battle was ongoing, Bass, the mercenary leader of the liberation group finally reaches the top as well. He then saw the mysterious person fighting the Prime-Magi alongside a Solarian soldier-mage. For a while he got distracted by such an unusual scene but would soon notice the young me-reet, motionless and requires help. As he reached Lox, he saw that the young me-reet was under a spell and noticed that apart from breathing he was not moving a muscle. Bass started to panic a bit, not knowing what to do or how to save Lox from his current situation. All of a sudden he remembered someone that could help him, he then immediately contacted the Freedom for Hire Intelligence Unit. To his luck it was the unit head that answered his call, this was none other than the brains behind their group and one of Bass’s most trusted ally, Cid Quezacotl.
Without any delay, Cid demanded an update report from the young mercenary leader. Unnerved by Cid’s tone, Bass explained his current situation as well as informing him about the young me-reet’s unpleasant state. He further described Lox’s petrified body. Trying to decipher Lox’s case, he asked if the body was slowly turning to stone. Bass responded with “Negative”, and thus Cid finally tells him that it’s an ailment spell called STOP. The worried leader then asks Cid for any possible solution and so he replied that the only way to cancel it is by using a spell called Dispel. Upon hearing this, Bass turned off his communicator with an expression of hopelessness. Seeing that he is just an ordinary Able who knew nothing related to Magicka, he slowly fell into his knees. Bass punches the ground, signifying his inability to help the young me-reet as he laments on his pathetic self for not being able to save Lox and keeping his end of the agreement. A few moments later, a familiar figure was walking towards the miserable leader. Unknown to him, a huge gauntlet gently held Bass’s right shoulder; which lead the young mercenary leader to turn and see who it was. As he was about to look at the face, his eyes got diverted by the bewildering Magi-energy that was forming from the mechanized left arm of the eluded individual and after that strike it thru the body of the me-reet. In a split second Lox’s body moved and together with Bass they immediately recognized the one who helped them; it was Universe, the ever-loyal soldier-knight of the young me-reet. Their short reunion was cut short as Universe reminds the two about the difficult battle they shall face from their upcoming confrontation over such powerful adversary.
Within the battle, the two Solarian traitors were bested by the Prime-Magi; staggering both of them in the process, yet they showed an unyielding will in front of their enemy. Trying their best to hold their stance; despite the damages they took, the two locked their eyes on the Prime-Magi. During this event, they were ultimately joined by Lox, Bass, and Universe. Amidst the sudden awkwardness between the two parties, Each of them knew they had to cooperate with each other. The stage is set; both sides are ready to attack, as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance.
The Prime-Magi was about to make his move, when suddenly the Alpha Rune was slowly starting to crack, showing big progress of its unsealing. He noticed this, and so began to change his strategy. This time, instead of attacking Lox and the others, he covered the rune behind his back and decides to defend it until it is completely unsealed. Everyone in the group was unable to comprehend the enemy’s action except the soldier-mage. With a loud voice he tells his partner to relentlessly attack the Prime-Magi. The mercenary trusted him so well that without any hesitation he swiftly attacks the Prime-Magi while the soldier-mage began to run towards the right side of the foe. Lox’s group wasn’t able to follow and thought that the two were acting recklessly. Whilst observing their movement, Universe began to notice a pattern as he realized that the spell cast behind the object was Deshell. The soldier-knight digressed, for years, he thought that the crystal stone was just a family heirloom meant to signify a precider’s authority, a supposed valid reason behind the Prime-Magi’s action, until now. Universe finally realized that there was something even more at stake. He tells the two that they need to cancel the spell before it’s too late, Universe quickly orders Bass to run towards the right side of the Prime-Magi and relayed to the young me-reet that their primary objective is to stop the spell that’s. Bass was still confused but nevertheless followed Universe’s command with a determined face. The soldier-knight then explained to Lox that he must keep the Prime-Magi distracted while he prepares to cast another Dispel, however, Lox was driven by hate so much that not being able to attack the Prime-Magi head-on disrupted his focus. Universe reminds him that as the future precider of Corona, he must understand his role. After hearing such words from the soldier-knight, he held his head up and readied his rifle. Bass was already near the left side of the Prime-Magi, and so Universe yelled at him to attack the enemy no matter what. Bass immediately jumps in order to strike the Prime-Magi. Unfortunately the Prime-Magi took notice on this that he --even with continuous strikes from the mercenary-- was quick to cast a spell called Counter that deflected Bass’s attack at a cost of him getting hit by the mercenary instead. The Prime-Magi instantly recovered himself and blocked an incoming strike from his pursuant. The mercenary began to attack relentlessly once again. Using his strength he knocked back the mercenary for awhile, unknowingly attacked by the young me-reet with a barrage of bullets. The Prime-Magi can still feel pain, alas, such damage had little effect on him, however, the young me-reet wasn’t expecting him to be, rather, he wants the enemy to lock unto his site; keeping him away from Universe who was already beginning to cast his spell. Still, the Prime-Magi’s extensive observant over the situation made him notice the soldier-knight and what he was about to do. He was about to use his teleportation skill in order to get near him but failed to do so when ten gravity shots prevented his movement and kept him in place. He then realized the soldier-mage on the left side, whom he thought would use his weapon Dispel Shot --a rather inferior version of the Dispel that can only delay the effect of any spells-- to slow the Deshelling process but instead chose to wait for an opportunity to prevent his actions. The soldier-mage smirked, as he unraveled to the enemy that he was already aware that the spell cast on such suspicious object was Deshell. He also added that the one who fired at him was previously under the effect of STOP, further realizing that somebody was able to cancel the spell, and then proceeds to point at the soldier-knight. The spell was complete, and so, without further delay, Universe cast the Dispel towards the rune. His physical form hindered his ability to relinquish himself from the gravity that binds him, yet his desperation to stop the spell unleashed the Prime-Magi’s true power for a moment. A burst of Magicka energy briefly covered the entire place with a blinding light. Though a bit weakened from the amount of energy he dispersed, the Prie-Magi was able to set himself free, however, nonetheless, it was already too late, the spell successfully canceled Deshell; leaving the Alpha Rune lying on the floor like a regular stone.
Slowly banding together, the five were able to prevent the Prime-Magi's plan. Bass tells Universe that he thought they’ll never stand a chance against such foe. Universe just reminded him to just believe in his ability. The soldier-mage taunts the Prime-Magi that his plans had already been foiled and surrendering would be his only option. The mysterious mercenary stood silently, looking at the weakened foe. With a slightly angered face, Lox reminds the Prime-Magi that he will pay for all the things he did to him and to the people of Corona. They prepared their weapons, as little by little they walk towards the enemy when suddenly the unexpected happens. The Alpha Rune began to crack once again but even more aggressively than before. In spite of all their effort, the Dispel didn’t make it in time and so it broke and dark energy was bursting from within. Unleashing a dark purple malicious energy that immediately surrounded its perimeter, the Prime-Magi --though in pain-- was overjoyed by the sight that he had long awaited to happen. A beam of dark purple light coming from the tower shone all over the planet Eden. As friend and foe alike began to fear it; sending shivers to their body, and on that day it became a reminder to all Ables that the end is near. The light began to fade from the outside however its rays continued to cover the entire chamber where the Prime-Magi and the five are. The dark purple light began to take a form; revealing to them a spectral naked female. It began to scream and her wail became the start of their fall. The eerie scream didn’t affect the Prime-Magi, however, the same cannot be said to Lox and the others as they try to cover their ears, trying to prevent themselves from hearing such distasteful sound. Recovering from his weakened state, the Prime-Mage stood up, as he explained to them that the screams coming from the spirit was a direct hatred towards the creators of this planet. One by one they fell on the floor, unable to withstand her scream. With arms wide open, he introduces Eve to them, the once essence of the planet, and now the one who will obliterate life and Eden itself. Still confused from her unsealed, Eve left the place heading outside the tower; leaving no clues as to where her next destination is. The Prime-Magi wasn’t unpleased by her sudden departure, for he knows that she deserved to have her freedom for a while, until she recalls all of her memories back, and remember what she was destined to do. No longer feeling her presence, the Prime-Magi ordered his underlings to bring forth the floating fortress Ozma. The fortress slowly descended from the sky, as clouds began to disperse, and just outside the top, near one of the tower’s window, the fortress appeared. Looking at the five once more, the Prime-Magi thought about finishing them, yet sensing something dire from the young me-reet and the others, he decided to leave instead and proceeded to the floating fortress; leaving them behind unconscious.

Biotech startup scores $20M to develop drug that triggers the immune system to fight cancer
Mavupharma, a biotech startup primarily based in Kirkland, Wash., introduced Wednesday that it has raised a $20 million Collection A funding spherical to develop a singular class of drug that allows the physique’s immune system to battle most cancers.
The funding comes from Frazier Healthcare Companions, which led the spherical, and Alpine BioVentures. It’s the first funding the startup has raised because it was based in 2016.
Mavupharma was co-founded by senior Frazier life sciences advisor Michael Gallatin, who serves as its president, and pharmaceutical govt Greg Dietsch, now the corporate’s chief scientific officer.
The funding will assist the corporate’s main drug candidate begin scientific trials, a necessary step on the trail in the direction of being authorized by the FDA.
Mavupharma’s analysis focuses on the STING (stimulator of interferon genes) pathway, an vital a part of the physique’s innate immune response.
Amongst different issues, the pathway triggers extra intense immune responses and isolates contaminated cells so they don’t unfold their illness. It’s already being studied as a technique to deal with some cancers.
“Concentrating on the STING pathway holds nice potential for harnessing the physique’s immune system to battle most cancers and viral ailments,” stated Gallatin, additionally Mavupharma’s President, in a press launch. “Mavu’s novel method makes use of non-nucleotide small molecules to not directly and conditionally modulate the pathway, and we’re leveraging this know-how to develop orally bioavailable STING activators with first-in-class potential.”
Making an oral drug is what Mavupharma hopes will set it aside: Most different STING medication have to be injected immediately right into a most cancers tumor. The corporate can be casting a wider web, taking a look at purposes outdoors most cancers.
And if it finds success with small-molecule medication, it might set it aside within the subject of most cancers immunotherapy, medication that use the immune system to battle most cancers.
Lots of the success tales within the subject up to now are advanced therapies primarily based on residing organic cells, like T-cells and antibodies. Which means they’re extra difficult and costly to make, retailer and administer than a easy oral drug could be.
The corporate additionally introduced Wednesday that it has added new management: Biotech entrepreneur Bob Baltera was added as the manager chairman of the corporate’s board and pharmaceutical govt Clayton Knox joined the corporate as its chief working officer. The corporate has 5 staff complete.
Different board members embrace Frazier common managing companion Jamie Topper and biotech govt and advisor Richard Heyman.
