Nuclear bunker sales increase, despite expert warnings they aren’t going to provide protection
Tumblr media
When Bernard Jones Jr. and his wife, Doris, built their dream home, they didn’t hold back.
A grotto swimming pool with a waterfall for hot summer days. A
home theater for cozy winter nights.
A fruit orchard to harvest in fall.
And a vast underground bunker in case disaster strikes.
“The world’s not becoming a safer place,” he said.
“We wanted to be prepared.”
Under a nondescript metal hatch near the private basketball court, there’s a hidden staircase that leads down into rooms with beds for about 25 people, bathrooms and two kitchens, all backed by a self-sufficient energy source.
With water, electricity, clean air and food, they felt ready for any disaster, even a nuclear blast, at their bucolic home in California’s Inland Empire.
“If there was a nuclear strike, would you rather go into the living room or go into a bunker? If you had one, you’d go there too,” said Jones, who said he reluctantly sold the home two years ago.
Global security leaders are warning nuclear threats are growing as weapons spending surged to $91.4 billion last year.
At the same time, private bunker sales are on the rise globally, from small metal boxes to crawl inside of to extravagant underground mansions.
Critics warn these bunkers create a false perception that a nuclear war is survivable.
They argue that people planning to live through an atomic blast aren’t focusing on the real and current dangers posed by nuclear threats, and the critical need to stop the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
Meanwhile, government disaster experts say bunkers aren’t necessary.
A Federal Emergency Management Agency 100-page guide on responding to a nuclear detonation focuses on having the public get inside and stay inside, ideally in a basement and away from outside walls for at least a day.
Those existing spaces can provide protection from radioactive fallout, says FEMA.
But increasingly, buyers say bunkers offer a sense of security.
The market for U.S. bomb and fallout shelters is forecast to grow from $137 million last year to $175 million by 2030, according to a market research report from BlueWeave Consulting.
The report says major growth factors include “the rising threat of nuclear or terrorist attacks or civil unrest.”
Building bunkers
Tumblr media
“People are uneasy and they want a safe place to put their family. And they have this attitude that it’s better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it,” said Atlas Survival Shelters CEO Ron Hubbard, amid showers of sparks and the loud buzz of welding at his bunker factory, which he says is the world’s largest, in Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Hubbard said COVID lockdowns, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war have driven sales.
On Nov. 21, in the hours after Russia’s first-ever use of an experimental, hypersonic ballistic missile to attack Ukraine, Hubbard said his phone rang nonstop.
Tumblr media
Four callers ended up buying bunkers in one day, he said, and more ended up ordering doors and other parts for shelters they were already building.
Hubbard said his bunkers are built for all disasters.
“They’re good for anything from a tornado to a hurricane to nuclear fallout, to a pandemic to even a volcano erupting,” he said, sweeping his arms toward a massive warehouse where more than 50 different bunkers were under construction.
A loaded shotgun at arm’s length and metal mesh window shields to block Molotov cocktails nearby, Hubbard said he started his company after building his own bunker about 10 years ago.
He says callers ask about prices — $20,000 to multimillions, averaging $500,000 — and installations — they can go just about anywhere.
He said most days he sells at least one bunker.
Under Hubbard’s doomsday scenario, global tensions could lead to World War III, a situation he is prepared to live through.
“The good news about nuclear warfare,” he said, “if there ever was any, that it’s very survivable if you’re not killed in the initial blast.”
He’s not wrong, say U.S. government disaster preparedness experts.
“You want to go to your most robust building”
Tumblr media
“Look, this fallout exposure is entirely preventable because it is something that happens after the detonation,” said Brooke Buddemeier a radiation safety specialist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where the U.S. government designs nuclear weapons.
Buddemeier and his colleagues are tasked with evaluating what could happen after an attack and how best to survive.
“There’s going to be a fairly obvious nuclear explosion event, a large cloud. So just getting inside, away from where those particles fall, can keep you and your family safe.”
Buddemeier and others in the U.S. government are trying to get Americans — who decades ago hid under desks during nuclear attack drills — educated about how to respond.
After a deadly and deafening blast, a bright flash and a mushroom cloud, it will take about 15 minutes for the radioactive fallout to arrive for those a mile or more away from ground zero, said Michael Dillon, a scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Tumblr media
“It’s going to literally be sand falling on your head, and you’re going to want to get out of that situation. You want to go to your most robust building,” he said.
In their models, they estimate people may need to stay inside for a day or two before evacuating.
Image
The government’s efforts to educate the public were reinvigorated after a false alarm missile alert in Hawaii in 2018 caused widespread panic.
The emergency alert, which was sent to cellphones statewide just before 8:10 a.m., said: “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”
For the next 40 minutes there were traffic jams, workers running into and out of buildings, families huddling in their bathrooms, students gathering in gyms, drivers blocking tunnels, all in an attempt to seek shelter, without any clear idea of what “seek immediate shelter” actually meant.
Today the federal government offers a guide to prepare citizens for a nuclear attack that advises people to find a basement or the center of a large building and stay there, possibly for a few days, until they get word about where to go next.
“Gently brush your pet’s coat to remove any fallout particles” it says, adding that the 15-minute delay between bomb and fallout allows “enough time for you to be able to prevent significant radiation exposure.”
Tumblr media
Jeffrey Schlegelmilch, who directs the FEMA-backed National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University, said “the scenarios of a nuclear detonation are not all or nothing.”
If a small number of weapons detonate rather than all-out war, he said, sheltering inside a large building to avoid the fallout could save lives.
“Underground bunkers aren’t going to protect people”
Nonproliferation advocates bristle at the bunkers, shelters or any suggestion that a nuclear war is survivable.
Tumblr media
“Bunkers are, in fact, not a tool to survive a nuclear war, but a tool to allow a population to psychologically endure the possibility of a nuclear war,” said Alicia Sanders-Zakre at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.
Sanders-Zakre called radiation the “uniquely horrific aspect of nuclear weapons,” and noted that even surviving the fallout doesn’t prevent long-lasting, intergenerational health crises.
“Ultimately, the only solution to protect populations from nuclear war is to eliminate nuclear weapons.”
Researcher Sam Lair at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies says U.S. leaders stopped talking about bunkers decades ago.
Tumblr media
“The political costs incurred by causing people to think about shelters again is not worth it to leaders because it forces people to think about what they would do after nuclear war,” he said.
“That’s something that very, very few people want to think about. This makes people feel vulnerable.”
Lair said building bunkers seems futile, even if they work in the short term.
“Even if a nuclear exchange is perhaps more survivable than many people think, I think the aftermath will be uglier than many people think as well,” he said.
“The fundamental wrenching that it would do to our way of life would be profound.”
Tumblr media
That’s been a serious concern of Massachusetts Congressman James McGovern for almost 50 years.
“If we ever get to a point where there’s all out nuclear war, underground bunkers aren’t going to protect people,” he said.
“Instead, we ought to be investing our resources and our energy trying to talk about a nuclear weapons freeze, initially.” Image
Next, he said, “we should work for the day when we get rid of all nuclear weapons.”
Year after year he introduces legislation pushing for nonproliferation, but looking out his office window at the Capitol, he said he’s disappointed by the lack of debate over what will be a $1 trillion expenditure to build and modernize the U.S. arsenal.
“The stakes, if a nuclear weapon is ever used, is that millions and millions and millions of people will die. It really is shocking that we have world leaders who talk casually about utilizing nuclear weapons. I mean, it would be catastrophic, not just for those that are involved in an exchange of nuclear weapons, but for the entire world.”
McGovern pushed back against FEMA’s efforts to prepare the public for a nuclear attack by advising people to take shelter.
“What a stupid thing to say that we all just need to know where to hide and where to avoid the most impacts of nuclear radiation. I mean, really, that’s chilling when you hear people try to rationalize nuclear war that way,” he said.
Nuclear war was far from a couple’s mind when they went house-hunting in Southern California a few years ago.
They wanted a home to settle down and raise their family, and they needed extra garage space.
They spotted an online ad for a home with at least eight parking spots.
On the basketball court, there was a metal hatch.
Beneath it was a bunker.
This was Jones’ former home, which Jones said he put up for sale for family reasons.
The husband, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of concerns about his family’s privacy, went ahead and bought Jones’ home, bunker and all.
They aren’t particularly worried about nuclear war, and haven’t spent a night in the bunker, but they have stored food and medical supplies down there.
“We have told some of our friends, if something goes crazy and gets bad, get over here as fast as possible,” the husband said.
“It does provide a sense of security.”

The anti-drone market in Japan is expected to grow at a CAGR of 27.5% during the forecast period.
The anti-drone market in Japan is growing rapidly due to the rising risks posed by unauthorized drone activities. As drones become increasingly accessible for recreational, commercial, and industrial use, concerns about their misuse have increased. Incidents involving drones disrupting airports or potentially being used for malicious purposes, including attacks on critical infrastructure, have highlighted the need for effective counter-drone solutions. With its reputation for technological innovation and a strong regulatory framework, Japan is emerging as a key player in the global anti-drone market.
The key driver for the market growth is the focus on securing critical infrastructure and public spaces. Airports, power plants, government buildings, and large-scale public events have increasingly become potential targets for rogue drones. Drone-related activities have been increasing in Japan. In January 2021, the Japanese Defense Ministry began researching vehicle-mounted counter-drone lasers to combat rogue drones. The ministry allocated USD 27 million from its 2021 budget for research and development of these technologies, with a portion of this funding expected to advance its laser and counter-drone systems. As of April 2022, Japan's military units were equipped with vehicle-mounted network electronic warfare systems (NEWS) designed to jam enemy radio frequencies. These systems can detect and disrupt electromagnetic communications from aircraft and vessels during peacetime and have the capability to jam enemy missiles, drones, and other assets during conflicts. In April 2023, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries introduced their high-energy laser anti-drone weapons designed to intercept and destroy incoming UAVs.
In response to the threats posed by North Korea's long-range ballistic missiles and China's maritime activities in the East China Sea, Japan has intensified efforts to strengthen its military air capabilities. The country is focused on enhancing continuous surveillance, maintaining air and maritime superiority, and improving command, control, and communication through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Japan has been developing UAVs with advanced technologies specifically for tracking ballistic missiles and ordered the Global Hawk from the US in 2015. For instance, In June 2024, Kudan Inc. (Japan) launched its Lidar SLAM technology and incorporated it into Terra Drone Corporation's Lidar Dual. Additionally, Japan is considering acquiring the MQ-8C Fire Scout unmanned helicopter from Northrop Grumman to operate from its new Izumo-class amphibious assault ships. Japan's strong technological manufacturing base provides numerous opportunities for anti-drone system development. In December 2019, Japan's Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) developed a prototype high-power microwave system capable of scrambling drone electronics from up to 10 meters away.

Internal Strength for a New Diplomacy: Evacuating the Old Order
In grim historical turn of events, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the leader and defense commander of the violent Israeli Regime in the Levant.  The announcement was hailed as a victory, and indeed it was. But it was a grim victory that reminds the world just how unequal the world's institutions have been over the years.
How is it that the only leaders indicted over War Crimes have been from Eastern Europe and the Global South?  It is a scathing retort to the rules based order that encouraged the world to believe that everything was good and right in the world for decades.  The truth is that the world has been operating in a Western bubble that is loosing all of its hot air.  The hubris of freedom, justice, democrcy and the open market is settling down so that the true state of the world is revealled.
The world has become keenly aware that those who once claimed to stand for freedom and justice were merely standing for themselves.   And if it must be excepted as simple self-interest, it means that states can comfortably move away from the sociocultural ideals of a Western led order.  Now the world is free to create new systems and institutions that deliver the justuce th wir nation, regon or alliances require.
Japan, one of America's top allies, just dumped nearly $62 billion dollars, Bloomberg News reports.  It is a necessary for Tokyo, as it must see to its own survival in a world order that is fast unravelling.  Many G7 and Nato allies have been hugely compliant and flexible, however that flexibility has its limits.  Their states and economies are at a breaking point, and there is no guarantee that they may regain their status or capacity if they lose everything.
It is obvious the world must pivot in earnest. Talk of the West must eventually cease, as it leans back into decline. The war hawks have decimated local economies, diplomacy, trade agreements and logistics networks that undermine value, currency and quality of life.  Europe is currently grapling with a massive housing crisis as the market loses affordability. Necessary attainments for population growth are no longer accessible. It is incredulous that nations cannot see the obvious reasons for population decline.
Now, sates worldwide are working to decenter Western currencies, technology, products and intel to guard against rampant weaponization.  They must look after the growth of their population and the expnsion of their economies or perish. The Western focus on external threats have left internal operations devastated in some of the most advanced economies in the world.  And now the international world does not want to follow suit.
The US alone has seen some of the worst diplomacy in years.  The past four years has strained relationships with allies and foes alike.  Israel once sympathised and tolerated by the world, has been plummeted to a genocide hub and pariah state,  whose leaders are wanted for crimes against humanity.  Staunch support from most G7 leaders, has only degraded the moral authority of those states ans institutions standing behind a regime that can kill 44,000 people  (70 percent of which are women and children) in less than 24 months, Middle East Eye reports.  The bloodbath has revealled the world's truest villians in stark fashion.
Russia has changed its nuclear doctrine in the face of ongoing Nato hostilities and fired an experimental mid-range missile in response to Ukraine long-range strikes.  It appears the retiring administration is hoping to hoping to stir up a firestorm for the incoming brass.  In less than 21 days from the election,  the US has OK'd long-range ballistic missiles and land mines in Ukraine. And that is to be expected, as continual blowback on international policy cuts down US jobs, economic power, dollar dominance and trust.  The focus has to shift.  Ukraine continues to hope it will be more than a sacrificial lamb, unlik Buenos Aires. Argentina has pivoted, to China as its leader realizes sadly, like Japan and Taiwan among other allies, that the US can't save you.
Even Americans must learn this sobering fact.  The US has cleared $4.6 billion of Ukraine's debt and $1.1 billion Somali debt, but average Americans can't get clemency for its debts. The failed diplomcy agenda has ignored the necessity of internal strength and the plight of normal Americans.  That means  nearly $6 billion dollars in American tax money is gone.  With 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing the military on the American dime, it seems the plot has been lost.  Such moves may help to explain the $824 billion dollars for which the Pentagon cannot account, Americn Military News reports.  It is the agencies 7th consecutive  failed audit.  National stability, productivity and quality of life have been sacrificed on the alter of a failed diplomatic authority.
Nations around the world must look to new institutions, agencies and partnerships that solve the world's most pressing matters.  It cannot be left to those who have abdicated true leadership.  Various hot spots around the world like Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ukraine, Haiti, Syria and Palestine among others require alliances that work as well as respect sovereignty and human life. The current international institutions have been unable to make even slight headway.
Diplomacy must be leveraged beyond all doubt to secure human life and economic strength must include the livelihood of the people.  A nation falls or stands based on its populace. Leaders must go beyond the war room and the round table to include meaures that empower the next generation. The current misteps in diplomcy, trade and local economy spell a daunting future for the old order, as its internal strength crumbles.
The nations who have focused on internal strength are shining in the present age. As things change, those equipped with greater skill to interface diplomatically and sustain and undergird its economy and population are standing at the forefront.  It is impossible to win a powerful foe in weakness, and those who have been wise to fortify will be the new lords of the age to come.
In the near future, the high key savagery of billigerent and tactless adversaries will be met with calculated force.  New leading actors in the Middle East, Eastern Europe,  Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean will emerge. Theory will be challenged in economic,  military and academic circles as not only the actors change but the social and educational framework.  Nations will be forced to find recourse as old order theory fails. In a time of chaos and flux, "Only the strong survive," not merely those who pretend to be...

Countries like the US, Russia, and Israel are leading efforts in the development of high-tech missile interceptors and electronic warfare systems.
For example, Boeing’s Huntsville operations were awarded a contract modification in 2020 to enhance missile defense capabilities that protect the US from long-range ballistic missile attacks. Additionally, the BrahMos missile jointly developed by India and Russia is among the most advanced missile systems in the world, emphasizing the importance of cutting-edge defense technologies in maintaining a strategic advantage.
Challenges Facing the Missile Defense System Market
1. High Cost of Missile Defense Systems
One of the major challenges facing the missile defense system market is the high cost of developing and maintaining these systems. The complexity of the technology and the resources required to develop interceptors, early warning systems, and missile launchers contribute to significant expenses. For instance, the US Army spent over USD 23 billion on the development of the Safeguard Anti-ballistic Missile (ABM) system, but it was shut down due to its exorbitant operating costs.
Despite the strategic importance of missile defense systems, the high cost of development often delays programs or forces governments to reconsider budget allocations. As a result, companies operating in the sector must balance cost efficiency with technological advancements to remain competitive.
2. Limited Interception Capabilities
Current missile defense systems primarily focus on intercepting missiles in the mid-course or terminal stages of their trajectory. However, there is growing recognition of the need for "boost-phase" interception, where missiles are intercepted at the start of their launch, a phase where they are slowest.
The development of boost-phase intercept systems has been controversial due to the technical and financial challenges associated with deploying interceptors in space or utilizing advanced technologies like drones and lasers. Despite these challenges, research in this area is ongoing, and advancements could significantly enhance global missile defense capabilities in the future.

“Hegemonic, War Criminal, Conspirator and Genocidal US” Targets One-Third of All Countries on Earth with Some Form of Sanctions
Tumblr media
Washington (Sputnik) — The United States is the all-round champion in the number of sanctions imposed on its adversaries and rivals, with one-third of all countries on Earth subject to some sort of restrictions, according to a new analysis by the Washington Post published on Thursday.
Starting in the 1990s, successive US administrations have made economic punitive measures and economic warfare the main instrument of their foreign policy, which all too often are ineffective and backfire, the analysis said.
Decades-long sanctions on North Korea for instance have failed to dissuade Pyongyang from advancing its weapons programs and developing intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities, the analysis said.
Tumblr media
Jeffrey Sachs, Professor of Columbia University: US Sanctions Against Russia and China Destined to Fail!
Some Excerpts:
"When it comes to Russia, the idea that this would be some kind of a 'knockout blow' for the conflict in Ukraine was utterly naive and predictably a failure," Renowned Economist and Columbia University Professor Jeffrey Sachs told Sputnik. "But I think the Russian economy also was clearly vastly underestimated. And what the West gets wrong on all aspects of the Ukraine crisis is that the World is not united with the West. The West is just a small part of the world. Most of the World wants to stay clear of this crisis."
"Well, clearly, Russia has a lot of resilience because it has a vast food production base," Sachs said. "It has a vast mineral base, it has a vast industrial base. The assumption in the West was that it did not have a high-tech base. So as was said by the German foreign minister, I believe, Russia would be scrounging washing machines imported from Germany to get the chips for its military capacity. These kinds of absurdities were part of the mythology, and Russia's high-tech capacities were clearly constantly neglected and discounted. Russia obviously has a very sophisticated digital industry, and that's both for civilian and for military purposes."
"All of this is to say that there are two dimensions to this question about whether Western sanctions will destroy Russia's long-term growth. One is that it completely overestimates the US chokehold on cutting-edge technologies and underestimates Russia's indigenous capacities, as well as those of its partners. And second, it completely misjudges the scale of the so-called US-led alliance, which is now smaller than the group that Russia firmly belongs to, BRICS+. And even beyond BRICS+ most of the developing world and emerging market economies just are going to continue to have normal relations with Russia, though they will find the US secondary sanctions and threats and cajoling uncomfortable. But they don't want to succumb to a US determined and dominated order."
"Let me just say, if you've been around long enough as I have, you see this kind of, again, wish fulfillment writing come in waves," Sachs said. "In the 1990s, we had articles, for example, by Paul Krugman on The Myth of the East Asian Miracles, I think was the title, but basically saying, 'Look, there's nothing there to East Asia's rise, there's nothing there to China's rise. China's going to collapse, an authoritarian or totalitarian state can't succeed. It's all a house of cards. It's all going to crumble.' This comes in waves. What's funny for me this time is that last year was 'China's the great threat to the world, taking over the world!' Suddenly the narrative changed. 'China's in collapse!' And as soon as the narrative changed, every columnist, including many I'm sure there who have never been to China, started writing articles about the Chinese collapse and the Chinese failure and the end of the Chinese economy. It's all nonsense, basically. It's just nonsense."
Tumblr media
Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Columbia University
"There is an active policy to break China's growth," Sachs said. "The US denies this. The US says, no, no, no, no, no. We just want to prevent a few technologies getting into the hands of the Chinese military. Nonsense. One reads, really, the US's approach and you can find it in many, many places. It is that 'China's a threat and we have to stop China's rise'. We have to find ways to create an international system that is unfavorable to China's continued rise. One part of that is the controls on technology exports to China, which we've discussed. Another part is basically more intensively closing down the US market to China's exports."
"So to sum it all up, the US is aiming to stop China's growth the same way that it aimed to crimp Japan's growth at the end of the 1980s, in the early 1990s, and the same way that it worked overtime to halt any kind of economic progress in the Soviet Union. China, of all of those cases, has both the internal capacities, orientation and the geopolitics to surmount the US challenge," Sachs underscored.
"Well, I think certainly there is a huge boomerang effect of these sanctions. Europe is the biggest loser of the sanctions, this is for sure, because Russia's low-cost production, both of primary energy certainly, but also of fertilizers and many other commodity-based manufactured goods going to Europe are now going to China and going to the rest of Asia. And Europe is in outright recession," said Sachs.
"And as Russia therefore turns to the broader BRICS world and the rest of the world, it's those countries that benefit from these linkages," the professor continued. "And it's Europe that is absolutely left behind. One of those beneficiaries is China. Clearly. Because China is a crowded, densely populated economy with natural resources, but on a per capita basis, relatively low. So it's very complementary with Russia. Add in the common shared high-tech element, and that's an added benefit of this increasingly strong relationship between China and Russia on the economic side, because there is a lot of technology transfer that can go in both directions. Add in the building of infrastructure across Eurasia, connecting Russia and China in a number of ways. That also is of great strength."
The US sanctions on Nicaragua and Cuba have proved completely ineffective in removing the respective administrations of Daniel Ortega and Fidel Castro (now Miguel Diaz-Canel).
While the United States at present imposes three times more sanctions than any other country or international body, the overuse of such restrictive measures is increasingly recognized at the highest levels of the US government, the analysis said.
The Biden administration has never been able to say "no" to the temptation of the power of sanctions and the apparent ease of their application, as Treasury Department staffers have had to shelve their drafts on the restructuring of the sanctions system and give way to new economically suffocating measures.
The thousands of sanctions have made lobbyists and former US officials richer due to the billions of dollars paid by foreign countries and oligarchs to help them safely navigate the changing geopolitical and economic environment, the analysis added.
Between February 2022 and January 2024 alone, the United States imposed sanctions on more than 16,000 individuals, over 9,000 companies, and more than 3,200 institutions from Russia, making the country the most sanctioned one in the World.
Tumblr media
Russia Will Recover, ‘Not Disappear’ Due to Sanctions - US Investor Jim Rogers!, June 30, 2024
"Russia is not going to disappear. There have been sanctions against Russia in history, there will be again. There have been sanctions against everybody in history. Russia will recover," Rogers said.
"If any country has a lot of sanctions against it, they would hurt the country for a while. So, Russia is going to have to deal with the fact that there are many sanctions against it," Rogers said.
"Russia is finding a way to get around the sanctions. But this always happens whenever somebody imposes sanctions. Many people try to find a way to get around the sanctions and they do," Rogers said.
"I can remember when Americans wouldn't even talk to Russians. And the Russians wouldn't talk to Americans. That will change again," he said. "Russia is a huge country, America is too. Of course, there will be communication and trade again someday. There always has been and there always will be after the war."
