Something something Nimona witnessing first hand just how kind and forgiving Ballister is (what with him defending Ambrosius + the institute + literally everyone lol) until it comes to her something something

He didn't dare speak ill of the guy that chopped of his arm but he did reach for his sword when it came to her. He didn't want to hurt the director in any really spiteful way (just wanted justice, not even something petty or revengeful) but immediately got ready to hurt her when she started to be aggressive.

Ballister and Ambrosious probably really bonded over constantly feeling intense pressure to succeed and be perfect. Ambrosious is the descendent of Gloreth herself, one toe out of line could bring immeasurable disappointment, and Ballister, as the first non-noble to be a knight, his position was precarious from the start. One screw-up, and he's disgraced (we do see this in the movie, but that was when he was framed for murder, I'm talking about smaller, more earnest and normal mistakes like doing something really embarrassing or saying the wrong thing etc.). So I think that conversations about the external pressure they faced seriously deepened their relationship and provided a place of deep understanding.
