Thinking about mechanical design again: Thoughts on self-altering dynamic form, and proportion designs
I like the idea of something which has big big shapes which can be very heroic and knight-like as we see in mecha anime, but something small and compact enough to enter human spaces and be spoken to as a character, like a friend of sorts.
Something which can be that big lean mighty form, but can also fit into something like a decently sized room with wider doors, and converse, so we're not entirely limited to "gigantic city-scapes", and we can have more intimate encounters in more intimate spaces.
The result is something which merges power-armour with mecha into something which isn't really one or the other.
Tumblr media
I had a strange epiphany a few years ago and I used to experiment with sketches, and I decided to revisit them and try something a little different.
The thought was something like, "how can I have a vehicle which can be both really dense for tight spaces, but also really lean and heroic looking in open spaces?"
So we go from something very Heavy Gear like, or Votoms like, to something more Nagano'ish, with leaner more heroic less soldier-ly shapes and more buccaneer or ballet-dancer.
The conclusion I came to made me think of armatures and mannequins used in tapestry which are designed to change shape and adjust.
The initial thought was, that the gimmick would need to first be the core: That the posture of the upper and lower (green and purple) would depending on the tilt, alter the altitude or height of the core which in turn has knock-on effects changing what's "normal" about the shape of the core:
With one posture being based on that of sitting in an office chair (short-form)
And the other, that of riding a horse (long-form)
Tumblr media
I think if this were a quad, it'd really be ldeal for ground movement.
I pretty quickly noticed, by varying the length of the legs on a linear joint, and with very minor work of the feet, we start getting variable mannequin style armatures.
The only difference? Change the plating on top, kind of like dressup to help soften the oddities.
There's a few other gimmicks we can kind of hide in these forms too. Say, the fact the feet flatten out into big snow-shoe like shapes, or up into big heels has implications of function -- going from land-like to something like aircraft landing-gear, poised and ready.
Tumblr media
The same is true of the knee sliding up and down on linear joints to extend the legs: I can imagine something like a secretary bird's powerful kick or to wallkick off of surfaces, or to absorb incredible landing pressures.
Tumblr media
The stancing isn't exactly great: The ankles for the long posture really need to widen, to sit beneath the shoulders to balance things out.
See here, how by splitting the thigh up (as we see in designs like L-Gaim MK II) we start to see as secondary leg structure emerge, where the knee is inside the former thigh?
That is to say, we're getting more movability, which becomes important as designs become more squat, making good strides and having good affordance gets much much harder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note here, the leg straightens out somewhat as it assumes the fuller posture, wheras toward the reduced posture it becomes denser and thicker, overlapping somewhat akin to the designs of something like Armored Core's 5th generation.
I think if the leg structure were split into grills or fins a la Turn-A Gundam, a much cleaner overlap stack could be achieved, with less of this excess volume produced by virtue of the elements being excluded from one another?
Thinking about it...
The result then is a sort of new form of posture expression.
A machine which with very minor differences crosses from American and European percieved averages (I emphasize percieved since these are largely stereotypes based in audience preferences -- there's actually no such thing as eastern vs western mechanical design due to how interbred it is, which I'll touch on another time) to those we see in Japanese work.
Curious to know anybody elses thoughts.
e:
Tumblr media
I was also thinking this too actually, so the leg can be flat. You'd get a surprisingly good road vehicle, which when it needs to climb, it rises up on its feet, but on flat, it can cruise quite comfortable at a really low height.
Tumblr media
Something like this, I'd imagine? I think if the hip joint allows, rotating to put the foot forward would make even more sense, with the knee facing back.

Inside The Story Of Tupac’s 1993 Shootout With Off-Duty Police Officers — And How He Got Away With It
On Halloween 1993, Tupac Shakur tried to stop two white off-duty cops from harassing a African driver in Atlanta. But when one of them pulled his gun, Tupac shot first in self defense.
Tumblr media
The son of a Black Panther, Tupac Shakur promoted self-defense in the face of societal racism, particularly against police brutality. And in the early 1990s, he was a common sight at the Compton Gun Range, where he and friends would pass the time and target practice.
Tumblr media
Then, early in the morning of Oct. 31, 1993, he shot three times at two white men who pulled a gun on him outside his hotel in Atlanta, Georgia — not knowing they were off-duty cops. Police arrested him the next morning and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault.
While two versions of the story persist, investigators found Shakur’s most credible. The 22-year-old had just performed at Clark Atlanta University when a street altercation turned violent. Spotting two drunk men harass a Black motorist, Shakur intervened to help — and shot in self-defense when one of the off-duty officers brandished his gun.
The incident came a mere month before Shakur was ambushed and shot five times at Quad Studios in New York. From then on, he would switch permanently into the “Thug Life” rebel who trusted no one and lived a life of paranoia. Tragically, his morbid fears were proven right when he was mysteriously murdered in Las Vegas in 1996.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How Tupac Wound Up In A Shootout With Off-Duty Police Officers
Born Lesane Parish Crooks on June 16, 1971, in New York City, he was renamed Tupac Amaru Shakur after an Incan revolutionary killed by Conquistadors and “Shakur” after his stepfather. His mother, Afeni Shakur, was a Black Panther and raised him in the party’s revolutionary spirit. But he also attended art school, where he studied poetry and ballet.
And while his mother had been a forceful activist who stood trial against bombing charges, Shakur used music as his call to action. By the time of Shakur’s violent police confrontation in 1993, he had already found rap success with his 1991 debut album 2Pacalypse Now and 1993 follow-up, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z….
Tumblr media
On Oct. 30, 1993, Tupac performed at Clark Atlanta University. And in the early hours of Halloween, he and his caravan of cars were heading back to the Sheridan Hotel to celebrate the show, with Tupac in the front car. But when they arrived, they saw two white men beating a African driver in the middle of the road, blocking the hotel entrance.
Meanwhile, Clayton County officer Mark Whitwell, 33, and his brother, Henry County officer Scott Whitwell, 32, and their two wives had just finished celebrating Scott’s wife passing the bar exam at the hotel. When they left and began to cross the street, they said they were nearly struck by an unrelated driver when an argument began.
This altercation is what Tupac and his crew drove into.
“It looked like a fight. And as we got closer we seen it was two white guys jumping a Black dude,” said rapper E.D.I. Mean, who was in one of the rear cars. “And immediately Pac just jumped out of the car.”
When Tupac jumped out, everyone in the caravan followed. And then, according to Atlanta Police Department Captain Herb Carson, “One of the officers pointed a gun toward the group.” Later, during the hearing, Mark admitted that it was him.
Tumblr media
Dressed in plain clothes, the Whitwell brothers were not immediately recognizable as police officers. Whether they identified themselves as such before brandishing a firearm has remained unclear. But what happened next isn’t.
The Whitwells were visibly intoxicated, and Shakur responded to the drawn gun by pulling out his own. Then, Mark Whitwell smashed Tupac’s car window with the butt of his pistol and Tupac fired three shots from his 9mm Glock. Two of the bullets hit the Whitwells — Mark was shot in the abdomen and his brother in the buttocks.
Why The Charges Against Tupac Were Dropped
Police arrested Tupac a few hours later at his hotel and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault. Treated for their wounds, the Whitwells were released from Grady Hospital the following morning when Shakur pleaded not guilty and was released on a $55,059 bond.

What A Triple Lutz Can Do

Dark! Bucky x Ice Skater! Reader x Dark! Steve

I think I unintentionally used bunny by @buckybarney as inspiration in making final edits. They also helped me figure out how to make this moodboard, so thank you! Please let me know if you enjoyed this, I had a lot of fun writing this!

Before the war, before Bucky had fallen off the train and Steve crashed into the ice, before the Avengers and before and the world made Steve Rogers harder—colder—he liked to call himself a hopeless romantic. He wanted to meet eyes with someone across a diner and feel the fireworks explode in his chest. He wanted to buy a girl flowers, he wanted to walk down the streets of Brooklyn while it was snowing with her hand warming his. He wanted to buy his girl a ring, he wanted to get married, have a family.
He thought he would get that with Peggy, but he missed his chance. When he woke up in another century, he thought for sure he would never get his happily ever after. The women today were so. . . brash. A lady was supposed to be kind, polite, and dutiful. He understood that times were different, but that shouldn't excuse the ungrateful attitudes.
Then he found Bucky again, and the crazy world he had been forced into didn't seem so hopeless anymore.
Tony had received a call from the International Olympics Committee, formally inviting the Avengers to the Winter Olympics. They were in Italy this year, Milan and Cortina. It was the first Olympic Games to be held in two cities, according to Bruce.
The committee had asked Steve to conduct the medal presentations for ice skating and hockey. They wanted Thor to carry the torch for the opening ceremony, but he was off-world and unavailable.
So here Steve was, sitting in the Mediolanum Forum venue next to Sam so he could watch the ice skating events. He figured if he was going to be giving the winners their medals, he should see why they won.
The committee had given the team access to front row seating, and that's where he was when you came out.
You were the third skater, and the first American representative, to take the ice. Your hair was pulled into a braided braid low on the side of your head with a blue flower pinned above the bun. The little dress you wore was modest—the same shade of blue that matched your flower and a sleeveless neckline that connected to a sheer fabric for sleeves and a higher neck, the little flowy skirt stopping in the middle of your thigh. Lines of little jewels dipped along your bust, beads varying in size. You had makeup on, like all the previous girls, but yours was light and glittery—save for the ruby red lipstick, but even that looked classical on you. It reminded Steve of the makeup women would wear back in the thirties.
He was so focused on you that Sam had to elbow him in the ribs to get his attention. He shut his jaw then, listening to the way your name rolled off the commentator's tongue, the syllables lining and matching each other perfectly.
You were twenty-one, and this was your first time competing in the Olympics. You've competed in other national and international tournaments, and you've done good in them if he was understanding correctly. It made an odd sense of pride swell in his chest. You were skating to Disney's Beauty and the Beast.
You moved to the middle of the rink as the announcer informed the stadium who conducted and performed your piece. You had four quads set in your routine, two in the first half and two in the second. It got quiet in the arena as you raised your arm over your head and arched your back like a ballerina. Steve counted five seconds before the music started and you spun around slowly. You started to move your body and—
Oh. Oh.
Steve was sure his jaw had dropped to the floor. The way you moved was bewitching, beautifully languid yet articulate. It was like the music moved through you, coursing through your veins as you made it entirely your own, bringing something so utterly delicate and ethereal out of the melody. You made it show in your body, in your movements.
The first of your quads were coming up, something called a quadruple lutz. Steve didn't know what it was, but when you threw your leg back and jumped, spinning in the air before landing and the crowd erupted into applause, he figured you did it correctly.
Your feet glided across the ice as you skated backward, your muscles tensing—you were preparing for your next quad. You kicked your leg back and used it as momentum to jump, spinning and landing what the commentator called a quadruple flip. The crowd cheered again.
Your expression—the raw focus and determination hiding behind your eyes—was gorgeous. Your crimson lips were parted slightly, eyelids hooded as you brought your head up. The delicate expression, the way your shoulders tensed as you jumped and spun in the air once, twice, three times before you landed gracefully on your toes had the breath leaving his lungs.
It was art. You were a work of art. So beautiful he wanted to lock you behind a glass cage and put you on display. You commanded the ice as if you controlled it, with such a degree of intricacy that Steve thought if you jumped high enough or spun fast enough you would grow wings and fly away.
You were in your element. You kicked your foot back before bringing it forward, using it to start your jump. You spun in the air and landed on one foot, your other leg spread out and leading the twirl you used to end the jump. The stadium cheered, Sam said something about a triple axel.
Steve wished the song lasted forever, wished he could watch you forever, but soon there was a flute trilling and you slowed, circling back to the center of the rink and just like that—your performance was over. The crowd exploded into cheers, throwing flowers, stuffed toys, anything they had in their pockets.
You broke into a smile, your plump lips parting and bringing out your dimples. Steve swooned as you waved to the crowd, bending to pick up a rose. Your gaze met his, and he swore he felt fireworks erupt in his chest. You smiled at him before skating off the ice, hugging a man sporting a red lightweight jacket with the USA logo embroidered on the sleeve, his dark hair slicked back. Steve watched as you smiled at him, not missing the way he stared at your ass as you turned away.
Then, suddenly, you were in first place. Your eyes went wide and you jumped up, hugging the man in the red jacket—Steve assumed he was your coach. He heard your squeal above the rest of the cheers.
Even from where he was sitting, your eyes were bright, brighter than your smile. Steve was proud of you, pride swelled in his chest as he watched you speak with a reporter. His eyes stayed glued to you as you shook hands with the reporter, your coach walking you to the locker rooms. He watched you until he couldn't anymore.
A strange desire pulled at his heart as he pulled his Stark Pad out, looking you in F.R.I.D.A.Y.'s database.
--
After watching your performance every other skater seemed dull, incomparable, to you. The judges must have thought so, too. You stayed in first place, winning the competition.
According to F.R.I.D.A.Y, you grew up in Chicago, but you moved to Manhattan for college. You got a new coach, Adrian Tucker, who was a gold and silver medalist back in the nineties. You're a junior at NYU, majoring in Art History. You have an Instagram, some sort of social media Peter had been trying to convince him to get, and Steve created an account immediately just to follow you. You had pictures of yourself, of friends, of the rink, even a pair of ballet shoes.
So you did ballet, good to know.
The award ceremony couldn't come soon enough. The idea of being closer to you sent butterflies fluttering through his stomach. Ever since he had gotten him back, Steve and Bucky have been talking about settling down—creating a life with a girl and starting a family. But they haven't found the right partner, but maybe. . . ?
When he stood in front of you, he swore he almost stopped breathing. You were gorgeous. Your hair had been taken out of the bun, cascading down your shoulders in loose waves. Your makeup was still done the same, but he noticed light freckles dotting along the bridge of your nose. Your eyes sparkled up at him—good God, you barely stood past his chest—your painted lips parted in a smile as you took him in. He placed the gold medal around your neck, congratulating you. You whispered a small, "thank you, Captain," and Steve felt a spark of electricity jolt down his groin.
Your voice was light, melodic, quiet. You were respectful, something he valued in people, in women. He could almost imagine you posed as the perfect housewife. With the perfect husband—or husbands—with the white picket fence, the kids. He could imagine your belly swollen, the little children running around calling you 'mama'. You were young, right at that age where women would start becoming wives and mothers back in his day. The thought only made his cock harder as he watched you on the platform, waving to the audience with the biggest smile on your face.
As he sat back down next to Sam, he pulled his phone out of his pocket. He pulled up Bucky's contact and sent him a picture from your Instagram.
'I think I found her,' he typed.
--
Bucky remembered the first time he realized he was in love with Steve—he was sixteen. He had danced around with plenty of girls already but none of them ever really seemed to stick. He had saved up enough money to spend Steve's birthday at Coney Island, that was the day he made Steve ride the Cyclone, back when he was still skinny. He had bought Steve a hotdog, which a pelican attacked him over. Bucky was crying from laughter, face red and stomach aching, when he looked over at Steve. Something just clicked then.
The past couple of months, Steve and Bucky had been making plans to add a third partner into life. After all this time, fighting Nazis and being mind-controlled and saving the universe time and time again, they both agreed they deserved it—that they deserved a family. They had both been selfless for so long, was it so wrong to want someone to be selfless for them? To want someone soft that could share their love?
Steve and Bucky were great together—the love of each other's lives, in fact—but they shared an overwhelming need to dominate, to control. On and off the field. When they fucked they were ruthless, full of scraping nails and biting teeth. Fingertips that left bruises that lasted for days. They needed someone else, someone they could focus that control on, someone who could take them so gently and lovingly, a way they rarely took each other.
Then he got Steve's text. You were young, and it wasn't hard to find out almost everything he needed to know about you. Steve helped him use F.R.I.D.A.Y to figure out where you live—a small apartment that was close to your college campus. You could walk to class if the weather permitted it. It also wasn't too far from the ice rink you trained at. It was easy for Bucky to find a building across from your suite where they could watch you. You liked to keep your window open, let the sunlight in.
They took turns sitting on the roof of the neighboring building, looking through a pair of binoculars. They would watch you for hours—watch you do simple things like reading. That was Bucky's favorite, the way your lips moved ever so slightly as you read the words on the page. You enjoyed reading horror novels—Steven King, Mary Downing Hahn, an author named Chuck Palahnuik. A worn copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein sat on your bookshelf. At first glance, Bucky never would have pegged you as a horror kind of girl, you were too sweet and too timid. As he continued to watch you through the cameras Steve had him install, though, he saw that you very much liked psychological thrillers. You would watch a show on YouTube about true crime and haunted locations, a couple of amateurs who didn't quite know what they were doing. They were funny, though. Steve and Bucky would watch you laugh as you stared at your phone, smiling to yourself.
You trained at a ballet studio in lower Manhattan, worked out at a gym a block away from that. They were quick to memorize your routine once they started. You'd wake up at five-thirty every morning and make yourself some breakfast. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday's you hit the gym and the studio; you'd go to whatever classes you had that day, grab a coffee at the campus cafe, then head to the skating rink for two hours. Two and a half hours max. You went home, studied, and then you were left to your own devices. Sometimes you read, sometimes you baked and God, Bucky almost couldn't stop drooling at the thought of tasting your cooking. You'd watch television in your small living room and be in bed no later than eleven o'clock every night to start your day again.
One Monday morning, Steve and had followed you to the gym. They'd been doing that the last few weeks. At first, Steve reasoned it was so they could watch over you, in case you got into some trouble. Some mornings they planned on running into you on the sidewalk, pretending it was an accident—there was a flower cart along your route you liked to stop and admire, sometimes buying a bouquet of daisies for your little bachelor pad—but the timing never seemed right. Steve was never wearing the right shirt, or Bucky's hair was always a mess from the wind.
You took a cab, which Steve followed a couple of cars behind on his motorcycle. The air was brisk, the first signs of spring coming into the city. Some of the trees had started growing their leaves again, vibrant greens against the grey winter sky. He parked his bike underneath a plotted tree that had just started to turn, the tips of the leaves a bright green as blossoms began to bloom, pastel pinks against vibrant greens with petals blowing in the wind. He bought a newspaper from a vendor a couple of stores down and sat on a nearby bench, catching up with the world as he counted down the minutes. You would be in there for an hour and fifteen minutes almost exactly.
Steve almost couldn't sit still. He was itching to get his hands on you, to feel you. He and Bucky have been watching you for a long time now, waiting for the right moment to get their hands on you. Steve was growing impatient.
At forty-five minutes, his eyes began to flick up at the building every few minutes. He knew it wasn't time yet, but there was always a chance you got done early.
At an hour, his gaze hovered just above the paper. Ten more minutes, he told himself.
At an hour and twelve minutes, you emerged. Steve watched as you hugged your coat to your chest and began walking. The studio you danced at was only a block away, so you wouldn't have to be out in the cold for long. Still, Steve couldn't help but chastise you for not wearing something warmer. All you had on were a pair of thin leggings—that hugged your ass beautifully, he might add—and a compression tank top under your lightweight sweater.
Steve rushed to his bike, folding the newspaper in his hand and revving up the engine. He drove down the block, parking in front of a cafe across from the ballet studio. He watched you enter the studio and sat at a table, ordering a cup of coffee. He saw you through the floor-to-ceiling windows, your let stretched up over your head. He reached for his sketchbook and pencil, laying it out on the table before him.
The night of the Olympics, the first time after Steve had seen you, he stayed up all night drawing you. He found a video of your performance on the internet, watching it on repeat as he drew you in different positions. The first sketch he did was of you with your arm over your head, just before you started skating. He found he loved drawing the shape of your lips, so the next sketch was a portrait of your face. Your long lashes were hooded, eyes downcast and your lips parted slightly as the pencil scratched against the paper, your plump lips etched in charcoal. The expression Steve caught you in was oddly ethereal, the kind of innocence that Steve found absolutely breathtaking.
His phone vibrated in his pocket. Steve sighed, pulling the device out of his jeans. Cursing, he reread the message Sam sent, looking back up across the street. You were still in front of the window, leg propped up on a bar with your upper body reaching for your foot. He sighed, closing his sketchbook as he stomped toward his bike.
--
Steve and Bucky trudged back into the Compound, exhausted and irritated. Not only have they been unable to see you for a week and a half, forced to watch you through the cameras hidden throughout your apartment, but the mission had been a complete bust. They had been sent away to Northern Peru, where Fury had given them intel about a group of HYDRA smugglers shipping illegal weapons into the country. Unfortunately, Steve and Bucky spent twelve days in a cramped, boiling building across from the target's warehouse and managed to find nothing before Fury called them back.
Steve was sweaty, Bucky hadn't taken a shower in a week, and they missed you. Bucky wanted to touch you, he wanted to kiss you until you were breathless. He watched you on his phone when he could, often opting to watch the camera feed than to sleep.
Once they were in their suite, Steve stripped his uniform off, leaving it in a heap on the floor to pick up later. Right now he just wanted to feel clean. He turned the shower on and peeled his boxers off as Bucky undressed, Steve stepping below the showerhead. The warm water felt nice against his taut muscles, his shoulders relaxing under the water pressure. He watched the dirt and grime from the mission get washed away, down the drain in muddy-grey color.
As he massaged shampoo through his hair, his thoughts wandered back to you, fingers itching to run against your skin. The way your lips always looked so soft, how utterly delicious you would look with them wrapped around his cock. The sweet little noises you would make as he forced himself down your throat—you were so small, it wouldn't take much to make you choke on him.
Steve groaned as his fist wrapped around his length. Almost two weeks without imagining you on your knees, imagining your mouth on him and he was oh so sensitive. He cursed, running his thumb over his slit. He pictured your tongue dragging against his girth, your wrecked expression as you struggled to take him deeper, as Bucky struggled to fit himself in behind you. He fisted himself faster, gasping out your name.
"Yeah, baby," he mumbled to himself. "Just like that. Fuck."
He could only imagine how beautiful you would look when you came. Your skin sweaty, hips bucking, your innocent little eyes rolling to the back of your head as you squealed. Oh, you were definitely a squealer. They would make you cum over and over and—
He bit back a moan as he came, hot white spurts coating his stomach as he slowed his movements, nerves on fire. He sighed, rinsing himself off before he turned the water off. He was still hard, he wasn't sure he'd be able to get himself off.
The tips of his fingers buzzed as he redressed himself and Bucky hopped in the shower. Steve didn't know if it was the stress of the mission or the adrenaline you gave him, but he couldn't wait anymore. He didn't have the patience to wait anymore.
He was watching the camera feeds in your apartment when Bucky came out of the bathroom. All it took was one look from Steve—they already had it all planned out, they just had to put it into motion.
--
You struggled to unlock your door, twisting the key in the lock a few times, cursing as you pushed your shoulder against the door, stumbling as the door swung open. You managed to catch yourself before knocking over your vase of daisies, straightening as you waited for your world to stop spinning.
You knew it had been a bad idea when you agreed to go out tonight. You're such a lightweight and after just three shots and half a glass of wine, you're going to have a killer hangover in the morning. God, and it's three a.m. But Annie had begged you to come with them. You haven't hung out with her in so long, you were desperate to see her again. You just wished she hadn't dragged you out to a bar.
You dropped your handbag on your little dining room table, opening the refrigerator to pour yourself a glass of orange juice. You drank half the glass in a couple of gulps, letting out a sigh as you set the glass down. As you moved to pull your phone out of your purse, you heard the floorboards creak, like someone was taking a step.
You froze, looking down the hall. The boards in your bedroom creak like that when you step down on a certain spot, but you've been in the apartment long enough to learn where it is exactly and step around it.
As quietly as you could, you made your way down the hall, checking the bathroom. You've seen enough horror movies in your life to know never to close the shower curtain when you weren't using it, so with a quick glance you knew the room was empty.
Your bedroom was at the end of the hall, the door cracked open. You walked in, carefully looking around. Your closet door was open, the windows were closed, you turned and looked towards your dresser mirror and—
You saw the figure behind you before you could react. Your eyes went wide, their hand coming up to cover your mouth before you could muster a scream. Your hands flew up to the hand, legs kicking out as the intruder dragged you out of your bedroom. You screamed into the hand, thrashing as you felt a sharp prick in your neck.
"It's alright," they cooed. "Shhh, it's okay, doll. You're just gonna go to sleep for a little while, okay?"
You shook your head frantically, tears streaming down your face as you felt your body getting tired. You blinked furiously, trying to fight the sleepy feeling. Your muscles felt like dead weight, you stopped kicking your feet as your grip on the man's cold hand went slack.
"That's a good girl," he crooned. "Just relax, kitten. I'm not gonna hurt you."
Your tongue felt heavy in your mouth. Your vision blurred, and then everything went black.

The popular Mexican dance group Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico is back after a year off due to COVID-19. Dozens of kids are in the group each year, learning traditional Mexican dances from Baja California, Jalisco, Nayarit, Veracruz, and Nuevo Leon.
It’s a way for many to connect back to their heritage, including 17-year-old Yanel Alaniz who’s been dancing with QCBF for 12 years. “It brings a little bit of Mexico over here, showing our culture. It’s something different, it’s not something you see all the time. It’s a good experience,” she says.
Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico started in 1984, with free dance lessons for any child between four and 18 years old. Director Ray Terronez Jr. says not only does it help teach kids about their heritage, but it’s a way for them to grow. “Seeing them approach a step that’s not easy or get choreography they keep forgetting and suddenly it starts clicking. Seeing that growth in learning is very rewarding as an instructor.”
It helps bring a lot of kids back into the community and gain confidence in themselves, especially as Latinos. Miguel Cornelius has been dancing with the group for about seven years, and says it helps him relate back to his Mexican ancestors, “it’s almost like a relief. Once you get out there and perform, it’s a gush of pure joy. It’s all emotion.”
During the pandemic, the group had to put their practices on hold and temporarily close their doors. Now, the colorful dances are back and the group has about 20 performances scheduled this year.
Terronez says this dancing helps bring more awareness to the Mexican culture, “the more you accept differences in other people, the more you learn about different cultures, the more you’ll understand others better.”
Any child between 4 and 18 years old can sign up for the group for free. You can find more information here.

M, 24k, Complete. Canon compliant - post series, relationship problems. over the oaks by @owlishann. Art by @hecate-mist.
T, 27k, Complete. AU - Spacetrip, time travel. Books have always called Yuuri, ever since he was a child. The Truth About Agape by @kastuuki. Art by Purin.
M, 2/7, WIP. AU - Superhero, temporary charactter dead. Looking at the picture in the newspaper, the superhero is carrying Victor in the most cliché way they could ever find themselves in: a bridal carry. It has become an iconic photo and the city just ran with it. Everyone loves a good love story, even if it’s not entirely true.
Red Cuffs of Fate by @gabzjones. Art by Cerisebio.
E, 38k, Complete. AU - Crime and police, soulmates. It was his first job as detective; hunting down the ever elusive Mercury, a thief who got his kicks from simply getting away with the crime. Yuuri had gotten close. Really close. And then he noticed the mark of the soulmate bond on his hand.

M, 1/?, WIP. AU - Just like Heaven AU, apparent MCD. Yuuri has a traumatic fall, and he's absent from the rest of the series. The first night in his new apartment, he's haunted by the ghost of a beautiful Japanese man he's never met before.
The Brightness of Gold and Silver by @katineto. Art by @theliteraryluggage.
M, 7/16, WIP. AU - Royal, medieval monastery, omegaverse. After the death of his husband the king, Viktor—childless and powerless—finds himself relegated to a small convent far removed from the royal court and its political games. As he struggles to adapt to convent life, he begins to notice how desperately he desires one brother's compabullsny—even to the point of sin.
Drag Your Soul to Shore by LinneaKou. Art by @anonbaph.
M, 36k, Complete. Canon divergence - supernatural, curses. Just before Katsuki Yuuri advances to his first-ever Grand Prix Final, the skating world is sent reeling when a stranger destroys Viktor Nikiforov’s life in more ways than one, resulting in him being banned from competing and gaining the hatred of everyone he knows.
Trade all my tomorrows for just one yesterday by @briapia95. Art by @dyeingdoll.
T, 1/?, WIP. AU - Kyoukai no Kanata AU. The youmu stops and Viktor, vision blurred and confused, notices something he never thought he would see again. A sword, slightly curved to the back, red, and clearly made of blood is emerging from the youmu’s front. He knows who that kind of power belongs to, but he can’t bring himself to believe.
To Love And To Honour (Esp version) by Midnight_Luna. Art by @caramel-draws.
T, 1/?, WIP. Canon compliant - Disney's Coco AU. Warnings: MCD. On the day of the Obon, Hikari Katsuki'll have to embark on a journey without precedent to the Land of the Dead, uncover the secrets that shattered her little family and find the real reason why her father never let her go near a skating rink.
When You Really, Really Miss Me by @cleverlittleradiator. Art by @caramel-draws.
M, 2/4, WIP. Canon compliant. Warnings: MCD. In which Yuuri dies, Viktor lives, and he's not the only one left to deal with the aftermath.
Sing to me like steel by @ravensmores. Art by @impatvish.
E, 2/2, Complete. AU - Hospital.
“I just know I’d hate myself even more if I didn’t tell you.” Victor’s voice is surprisingly hesitant as he wipes his face, hand still resting softly in Yuuri’s. “If- if I didn’t ask if there was still a chance.”
“You killed people Victor.”
Pleurosis by @kingfisherunion. Art by @rettlecake.
T, 1/?, WIP. AU - Hanahaki.
Viktor doesn't take Yuuri up on his offer at the Sochi banquet, but someone else does. Depersonalized, depressed, and doubting that he'll make it through another season of marketing himself to an uncaring public, Viktor finds himself ill at Worlds, and nothing he does seems to help. When Yakov takes on a new skater, Viktor's health takes a turn for the worse and he's suddenly faced with a dire choice.
Whiskey Lullaby by @justrae2010. Art by Andi.
E, 8k, Complete. Warnings: MCD.
The divorce papers had come through a month later. Yuuri didn’t come back.
Victor needed a drink.

JASPER LUCAS HART
20 (01.19.00) / figure skater / between cities
disclaimer: i planned to do headcanons and ended up just writing about his career.
🏅 jasper had been adopted by kiara and logan hart when he was only two months old, having no connections or knowledge of his biological family. not that he lacks in family, growing up with eight siblings can be quite chaotic after all.
🏅 at the age of three jasper had decided that he wanted to be a dancer after watching an animated movie about ballet. in fact, it was his ballet teacher when he was six that suggested that he’d try figure skating due to his high energy and the rest is history.
🏅 it was only when jasper was about ten that people realized that skating was not just a hobby, when he won the bronze medal in a national competition in the novice b category (2009-2010). two years later he won the silver medal in the novice a category which allowed him to compete in the national junior championship (2011-2012) where he ranked 6th.
🏅 jasper won a bronze medal in the 2012-2013 canada junior championship, which allowed him to make his international debut. from that point on, there was no stopping him.
🏅 he won a bronze medal in both of his jgp events in 2013-2014 and qualified to the jgpf, were he had finished in 4th place. same year, jasper won canada junior championship and finished 11th in the senior level. he also competed in the junior world championship where he finished in 6th place.
🏅 jasper moved his training to los angeles ahead of the 2014-2015 season to train under a new coach. jasper won the silver medal in the jgpf of that year, gold in canada junior championship, 5th place in canada championship and bronze in the junior world championship.
🏅 it was the 2015-2016 season that really put jasper on the map as someone to look out for, winning gold in all of his junior competitions up to worlds (both jgp events, jgpf, canada junior championship), but he came up short on the national senior level, finishing 5th again before finishing his season with another gold medal in the junior world championship.
🏅 jasper’s success continued into his next season (2016-2017), winning all of his junior competitions and snagging the bronze medal in canada championship, signalling his senior debut next season.
🏅 senior level was different and without as many quads as his competitors, jasper only medal of the 2017-2018 season was bronze in the canada championship. He got to watch the olympics that year instead of competing like he wanted to.
🏅 things got a little better in the 2018-2019 season, when jasper managed to snag a place and even the bronze medal in the gpf in vancouver. he won the silver medal in the following canada championship and finished 5th in the world championship.
🏅 the current season, 2019-2020, had started off fairly well, for jasper and apart from an injury forcing him to withdraw from the gpf, things are not looking bad. he had just won his first national title and is preparing for his next competition before worlds in march.
🏅 jasper had definitely painted beijing 2022 as his goal and he’ll do everything he can to get there.
🏅 on the off season, jasper often caught running between trying to get some education in and doing ice shows across the world.

A Basic Guide to Nathan Chen
With all the new fans joining our ever increasing band of Nathan Chen stans, as well as with the Olympics coming up in a few days, I figured I’d make a masterpost of all the essential things to know about him. Please note, I have only been watching Nathan skate since 2016 so I am by no means an expert but I have been a big fan during that time so I know quite a bit.
So whether you are someone who just wants to know more about Nathan for the Olympics, or you are a budding Nathan fan, this post is for you.
Click the read more to see the entire post.
First, a brief history of Nathan and his career. Nathan was born May 5th, 1999 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His parents are immigrants from China. He started skating in 2002 after the Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City. Along with figure skating, Nathan also trained in ballet and gymnastics and competed in those events up to the state level. In 2011, Nathan moved to California to train, and by late 2011 he switched to his current coach, Rafael Arutunian.
As for competition highlights, on the national level, Nathan is the 2010 US Novice Champion (youngest ever at that level) and the 2012 and 2014 US Junior Champion. His first senior US Nationals was in 2015, and he placed 8th due to a heel injury. In 2016, Nathan placed 3rd but he injured his hip during the exhibition skate and was out for the rest of the season. Sometimes the announcers still reference this during US Nationals. Nathan secured his first senior US champion title in 2017 and repeated that title in 2018.
On the international level, Nathan started in the Junior Grand Prix series in 2012 and he placed first in his first event but had to pull out of his second event due to injury. In 2013, he won gold at both of his qualifying events and went on to place 3rd in the Junior Grand Prix Final. That same season he placed 3rd at Junior Worlds. In 2015, Nathan went to Junior Worlds again but this time placed 4th. In the 2015 Junior Grand Prix series, he won gold at both of his qualifying events as well as the JGPF. However, he missed out on Junior Worlds that year because of his injury at US Nationals. In the 2016-2017 season, Nathan moved up to the senior level internationally. In the Grand Prix series, he placed 4th and 2nd respectively and qualified for the GPF. He won silver at the GPF and became the second youngest male skater to win a GPF medal after Evgeni Plushenko. That season, Nathan also won gold at Four Continents ahead of current Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, but at Worlds he placed 6th due to nerves and boot issues.
As for this season, Nathan has won both of his GP Qualifying events as well as the Grand Prix Final and US Nationals. The Olympics is his next event and he will finish off the main season with Worlds in March.
Some of Nathan’s important accomplishments:
- He is the first skater to ever land 5 types of quads in competition The 4T, 4S, 4F, 4Lz, and 4Lo (4A has never been accomplished yet).
- He is a member of the 100 club (A fan term for those who have achieved a score over 100 in the short program…currently only at 7 members). Also he is one of only 6 skaters to ever score above a 200 in the free skate and one of only 5 skaters to earn a composite score above 300.
- He is the first skater to land 5 quad jumps in a free program as well as the first skater to land 7 quad jumps in a single competition
- He is also the youngest US man to win a medal at the GPF, the youngest US man since 1966 to win US Senior Nationals, and the youngest US man to win a gold medal at the GPF.
It is also important to note Nathan’s support team and those around him.
- Nathan’s coach is Rafael Arutunian. Rafael is from Georgia (the country not the state) during the time of the Soviet Union. Rafael now lives in California where he trains his skaters. Nathan sometimes skates to songs by Russian composers, and it is believed to have a lot to do with Rafael.
- Rafael can often be seen yelling/clapping/generally being excited on the edge of rinks during his skaters’ performances. He also sometimes gets more excited than his skaters do when they do well.
- Nathan also trains alongside fellow American skaters Adam Rippon (also on the US men’s Olympic team), Ashley Wagner, and Mariah Bell.
- Nathan is the youngest of 5 kids and his family always seems to be super supportive of him. One of his sisters works in Silicon Valley.
Other important things to know about Nathan and the figure skating fans:
- Nathan sometimes gets ripped on for being too technical of a skater, meaning too many jumps and not enough artistry. It is starting to happen less and less because his artistry has been improving as he matures but you will still see this happen on occasion.
- Nathan struggles with his triple axel more than any other jump. It is sometimes referred to as his Achilles heel.
- Nathan is a part of the sQUAD, which is a fan made group of Shoma Uno, Boyang Jin, and Nathan Chen. This group is made of younger skaters that can do insane jumps, hence the “QUAD” part of the name. This term is thrown around on occasion with figure skating fans.
- You may also hear of Nathan being called “King Quad.” This is a reference to a series of ads for United Airlines where Nathan was given a superhero persona called King Quad.
- Nathan has also done ads for Kelloggs, Bridgestone Tires, and Coca-Cola. He was featured on Kelloggs cornflake boxes for the 2018 Olympics. He also had an ad for the Winter Olympics during the Super Bowl.
- Nathan is a fan of the Utah Jazz basketball team and you will often find him tweeting about them.
Now here comes the fun part, the videos of old programs. There are a few programs that are essential to knowing Nathan. Most of them are going to be newer programs since they are more relevant but there are a few older ones.
First off this year’s programs. If you are just here for the Olympics then at least watch these. I picked the most recent performances (US Nationals 2018) because they have the official costumes and they are the closest to what you will see at the Olympics.

Butterfly [10]
summary It’s alright.
Kushina jolted a little when she heard knocking on the door. She nearly dropped the bowl she had been washing into the sink. Looking down at her gloved hands, she sighed.
“Naruto? Minato-kun?” she called. Silence answered her.
“NARUTO!” Kushina yelled.
There was a thud. Rattling the plates stacked inside the cabinet.
“Ma?” Naruto’s voice groaned down the stairs.
“Go answer the door for me. I’m doing dishes,” Kushina ordered.
And Naruto continued to moan his protest as he lumbered to the door. A yawn ripped through him as he opened it up. And his jaw cracked as he saw Sakura standing there.
Sakura smiled.
“Hey there, sleepyhead,” she greeted him.
Naruto scrambled to flatten his hair. He rubbed at his eyes before he offered her a sheepish grin.
Sakura held up a cloth bag.
“Sarutobi-Jiisan dropped off some okra. It’s way too much, so give it to Kushina-san for me,” Sakura instructed. Naruto accepted it with both hands. And then he blinked at her backpack.
“Are you going somewhere, Nee-chan?” asked Naruto. He yawned, mouth opening wide.
“Yeah. Up to Sendai for some business,” Sakura replied, adjusting the straps of her bag. Naruto’s mouth hung open.
“EH? Are you taking the train up?” he asked.
Even the speeding Shinkansen took nearly 10 hours to travel that far north. Sakura could tell that the thought of sitting for half a day was torture for the jittery teenager. He could barely stand to sit still in class. She shook her head.
“I’m taking the train to the Fukuoka Airport. I would die if I had to sit in a train for long,” she told him. Naruto frowned.
“Aw, man. There’s this crazy popular ramen place that opened up somewhere in Sendai. Can’t you take me with you?” he pleaded.
She reached out to muss his hair.
“Sorry. Already bought my tickets. Maybe next time?” she replied. Naruto’s lower lip jutted out. Sakura couldn’t help but laugh a little at that pathetic expression. She rubbed his hair a little harder until he batted her hand away.
“Anything you want? Besides ramen?” asked Sakura.
Naruto’s eyes brightened a little at that. “Daifuku?”
“You got it, kiddo,” she answered. And then she stuck her head into the house.
“KUSHINA-SAN!” Sakura called. There was a pause.
“Oh, Sakura-chan! Come inside! Did you eat breakfast yet?” Kushina yelled back. And Naruto stuck one finger in his ear, wondering, as usual, why they insisted on doing this every time.
“I have a train to catch. I’m heading up to Sendai for the weekend. Do you want anything?” Sakura requested.
“Sake!” Kushina promptly said.
“Okay!”
And then Sakura looked back at Naruto, who scowled, digging his finger into his ear. She smiled at him.
“Ittekimasu,” she told him.
His frown melted. “...Itterasshai, Nee-chan.”
Haku tackled her when he found her at the airport that night. He wrapped his arms around her, smothering her as he practically dangled off her. Sakura laughed, spinning around with him.
“Okay, okay. Hi. Hello,” she said, tapping him on the back.
He released her, eyes glittering. He wore a mask over his mouth, elastic bands looping over his ears. There was a beanie crammed over his wet hair. He wore a faded black t-shirt over skinny jeans. His jade bracelet caught the light as he pulled his mask down. Teeth showing as he beamed.
“Is it okay for you to be up this late? Don’t you have practice tomorrow morning?” she inquired.
Haku flapped his hand at her.
“Whatever. Coach can wait,” he snorted. Like the thought of Kisame was a mosquito he was trying to bat away. Sakura smacked his hand. She wagged her finger in his face, suddenly stern.
“You won’t win all gold with that attitude,” Sakura warned him. Haku rolled his eyes, groaning. Hands linking behind her neck, he sagged.
“Ughhhh, you sound just like him,” he griped. But then he stood up straight. He raised the mask back over his mouth, casting a look around the terminal.
“Did you eat yet?” he asked her.
“You have to watch your weight. No,” Sakura snapped before he could even ask her. And then she thrust her backpack into his arms. Scowling, Haku put it on backwards, letting it rest against his chest and stomach.
“Go home,” he growled.
“No,” Sakura replied.
He stuck his tongue out at her.
Sakura slept on his sofa that night. She woke when she heard his alarm go off.
Despite his complaints, Haku was never late for training. That didn’t stop him from grumbling like an old man as he got out of bed and shuffled around in his slippers.
She lay on her side, blanket wrapped around her shoulders. Each time the floorboards creaked, her eyes fluttered open. She glimpsed him brushing his teeth as he filled his water bottle. Pulling his shirt over his head, nearly tripping over his backpack. Sakura saw the round, purple marks on his back from cupping therapy. Haku paused in the doorway of his bedroom as he tied his hair back. The little ponytail jutted out at the top of his neck, like a bamboo shoot. He turned to her.
“I left a spare key for you on the counter,” he told her.
Sakura closed her eyes.
“Thanks,” she replied.
“Help yourself to whatever’s in the fridge. But don’t drink my coconut water,” Haku went on.
“I don’t-”
“-like coconut water, yeah, yeah,” Haku finished for her as he remembered. They smiled at each other.
“Wanna join me later?” he offered, “I’ve got ballet in the afternoon, but I’ll be at the rink most of the day otherwise.”
Sakura rolled over onto her other side, pulling the blanket over her head. And Haku laughed again.
“Alright, I’ll shut up. Drop by if you can,” he then said. Sakura listened as his keys jangled together. The door clicked shut behind his footsteps.
Sakura went right back to sleep. Snuggled up at the perfect temperature on the sofa. She didn’t wake again until after the sun had risen. She helped herself to  the coffee he had left warming. Crunched through an apple as she scrolled through the news on her phone.
She put on a hat and sunglasses before she headed out of the apartment. Hands in the pockets of her joggers as she walked down the stairs. She hiked them up to her calves as she waited for the train. Bobbed her head to the music pouring in through her earbuds.
Sendai was a bustling city, even this early in the morning. Businessmen and women rushed back and forth in their black and blue suits. Briefcases swinging around and coffee splashing in their hands. High school students strolled at a more leisurely pace, the girls linking arms and the boys knocking into each other.
When Sakura stepped into the white building, the bell attached to the door jingled. The receptionist looked up, already smiling. And then her smile widened.
“Right on time. Go ahead, Haruno-san,” she directed, gesturing down the hall. Sakura waved at her before she went on.
Physical therapy took about an hour and a half. The doctor’s eyebrows went up as she examined Sakura’s left knee.
“Everything looks good. But I’d take it a little easy with all the jumps, Haruno-san. Or at least make sure you’re doing those stretches I taught you,” she instructed as she lowered Sakura’s foot. Sakura sat up, nodding.
The doctor shook her head as she shed her gloves. Dropped them into the trash can.
“No big injuries. You might have had a few more years in you, you know,” she said, sounding a little wistful.
Sakura’s smile was tight. It hurt her cheeks. She shook the doctor’s hand, holding back all the things she could have said in return.
Against her best judgment, Sakura decided to head to the rink. She bought coffee. She tried her best not to slosh them around in the cardboard tray as she walked. And while the sign said that the rink was closed, she headed in anyway. Sneaking past the man sitting at the counter. With his eyes glued to his phone, he missed her completely.
Sakura stepped into the cold room. She raised her sunglasses, let them sit on top of her hat as she glanced around. It didn’t take her long to find Haku and Kisame. And it wasn’t just Kisame’s blue hair.
It was the yelling.
“That’s why! If I push it to the end, it’ll get the 10% bonus,” Haku snapped.
“You already have three quads in the program. You’ll be too tired,” Kisame snarled in return.
“I’m not a washed-up geezer like you. I can do it, old man!”
“You shitty little brat! Would you listen for once in your life?”
“Then how the hell am I supposed to get gold this year!”
“Maybe if you cleaned up your landings, you might stand a chance.”
“I told you! It’s all mental. I’ve got this without you nagging me!”
“Tell that to your straight silver streak last season! Not a single gold!”
Sakura leaned over the side of the rink. She reached out, touching the only iced coffee to the back of Haku’s neck. He yelped, whirling around to face her. Teeth bared. But then his face went blank when Sakura grinned around the straw at him. She slurped down a mouthful of coffee before she spoke.
“Coach is right. Adding more jumps isn’t going to help you if you can’t stick the landings,” she pointed out.
Kisame made a smug noise in the back of his throat as he folded his arms across his chest. When Sakura handed him a paper cup of hot coffee, he stepped off the ice to accept it. Haku followed him, still scowling.
Kisame opened the lid to stare down at the black coffee. He grunted his approval before he looked back at her.
“What’re you doing up here? Aren’t you supposed to be harvesting turnips or something?” Kisame asked.
Sakura, in the middle of handing Haku the other coffee, made a face.
“You know, just because it’s out in the countryside doesn’t mean there are only farmers living there,” she sighed. Kisame eyed her over the rim of the cup as he took a sip. He lowered it.
“Yeah. You got the farmers’ wives and their kids too,” he retorted.
Sakura rolled her eyes. She turned her attention back to Haku. She fixed his bangs as he blew on his coffee to cool it.
“Anyway, you should probably listen to Coach on this one, kiddo,” Sakura advised. He wrinkled his nose at her. Stuck his tongue out before he blew out a long sigh.
“....Fine,” he grumbled.
After they had finished their coffee, Haku headed back onto the ice. Not before shoving his empty cup into Kisame’s hands. He skated off to the opposite side, smirking. Kisame glowered.
“That little shit,” he grumbled.
He then looked Sakura over.
“What’re you doing here anyway?” asked Kisame.
His hair was going silver at the temples. His voice had grown a little rougher. He looked different from when he had first started coaching her. He had a bit of a belly now. Smiling, Sakura reached out to pat it. He glared at her. But she saw him suck his gut in. Just a bit.
“Had a last check-up on this old thang,” she then said, pointing at her left knee.
Kisame’s expression softened.
“Everything’s okay?” he questioned.
During her last World Championships, she fell during one of the practice sessions. And while she was no stranger to falling, she had landed hard on her left knee. The pain hadn’t gone away like it normally did. She had managed to keep the swelling under control by wrapping it and icing it. She had kept it a secret from Kisame and somehow managed to skate both her programs to win her fifth consecutive gold.
She had only told Kisame of her injury on the plane home. And of course he had nagged her without cease the entire ride. Haku falling asleep against her shoulder on her other side. Her knee throbbing steadily like a metronome.
After surgery and four months of physical therapy, she was back on the ice. She knew Kisame had been biting his nails during the Olympics. Anxious that her kneecap would somehow fly off in the middle of one of her routines. He had cried harder than she had when she had won gold. Tears running freely down his cheeks when they read out her scores. And Haku had tackled the both of them from behind, arms almost choking her as he hugged her.
Sakura smiled, flashing Kisame a thumbs up.
“It’s perfect, just like me,” she assured him.
Kisame grimaced. He reached out and gave her shoulder a light shove. And they both smiled a little.
Over Kisame’s shoulder, she saw Haku whiz past. His left toe pick dug into the ice. She counted his rotations as he spun through the air. When he landed on his right foot, flecks of ice sprayed out in every direction. She flung her coffee into the trash can before she slammed both her hands down on the edge of the rink. Kisame read the fury in her eyes and turned to look at Haku.
“You under-rotated!” she accused.
Haku pivoted on his right skate. Put a hand on his hip.
“It wasn’t that bad,” Haku replied.
“You look like you’re making kakigori! Let me just get you some mochi and syrup!” Sakura criticized, jabbing her finger in his direction. Haku skated up to the edge of the rink, grabbing it too.
“You and the old man nag too much! It’s practice! I’ll get it right next time!” he snarled.
“I take my free time to teach you and you still can’t get the toe loop right! That’s the easiest one!” Sakura went on.
“You can’t even do a quad yourself! What’re you bragging about?” Haku shot right back.
“I have shorter legs than you! Of course I can’t! No wonder Coach is getting fat! He’s probably drinking himself to sleep at night because all he has is stupid students like you left!” retorted Sakura, pointing at Kisame. Who simply sighed, sipping at his coffee before it went cold.
As they continued to bicker, Sakura grabbed the front of Haku’s shirt. He grabbed her by the face, squeezing her cheeks together to make her lips bulge out. They eventually exploded into laughter, but not before Sakura dealt in a few good pinches. Wheezing, they leaned against the sides of the rink and looked at Kisame. Who simply eyed them.
“...I forgot how exhausting it is with you two in the same rink,” was all he stated. His voice low and measured.
Sakura winked.
“I think you mean ‘amazing’. Because I’m amazing,” she corrected her. Laughing again when Haku groaned.
Sakura stayed for the rest of Haku’s morning practice session. She let Kisame do most of the scolding, content to just watch Haku dance in circles and spirals. And when they began packing up to go get lunch, Sakura turned down their invitation.
Haku’s eyes went wide. “We can go get dessert, too,” he tried to bribe her. But then caught the dirty look Kisame shot him. “I mean, you can get dessert,” Haku amended.
“Gotta head back. I’ve got work tomorrow,” she told them.
Haku sulked as he watched Kisame muss Sakura’s hair.
“Next time, come during a break. I’ll buy you that drink,” Kisame told her. Sakura nodded. When she turned to Haku, arms outstretched, he glared. Crossing his arms across his chest, he made a face at her.
“Come on, you brat,” Sakura insisted.
Only then did Haku slowly make his way over to give her a hug.
“Don’t look so sad. Win all gold and you’ll see me soon,” she promised him. And then she gave him a hard push to the chest, sending him gliding backwards into the rink. Sticking her tongue out when he gave her an exasperated smile.
The plane ride back down to Fukuoka was short. She managed to get through a few chapters of her latest audiobook before it touched down on the ground. And as she stood at the train station, she took her phone off airplane mode. When the screen lit up, she saw several notifications. Texts and private messages began pouring in. Notifications from both Instagram and Twitter also popped up.
Sakura tapped the icon to open up Instagram. She received a notification that Samui had tagged her in something. She pressed it.
It was a looping video of her standing outside the rink, yelling at Haku, gesturing with her hands. Kisame also barked something beside her, arms crossed. And although Haku’s back was to the camera, Sakura knew that he had been yelling something back at them as he skated up to them. It had been taken from too far away to hear what any of them was yelling. And Samui’s giggles drowned out what little might have been discernible.
The caption underneath read: We got a special visitor in Sendai today. Looks like @haku.skates is getting a lot of attention. Next time, come say hi to me too, @ sakura-haru.
Sakura hadn’t even looked at the other skaters on the opposite end of the rink. It made sense that Samui would be training there too. It was her home rink after all. She felt bad for not greeting her for all of one second. Until she scrolled down and saw all the comments:
OMG IS THAT HARUNO SAKURA? Queen!
Wow is she making a comeback? (ʘᗩʘ’)
Where’s she been????? I MISSED HER SO MUCH COME BACK.
Is it just me or does she look like she got THICC
Is she going to be Shimizu Haku’s coach from now on????!?! sdkfsjdkfs I can’t
Taking a deep breath, she opened up Twitter. Where a skating news page had just retweeted the video and then speculated that she would be coaching Haku this upcoming season. Other accounts presented theories that grew more and more ridiculous as time went on. One speculated that she had retired because she was secretly pregnant. She rolled her eyes at that.
Sakura went to her settings and turned off all notifications for her social media apps. As she did this, she received several texts from Haku. At first, all she received were dozens of siren emojis. And then he began sending actual words.
OMG.
omg no.
Are you going to kill her?
Do you want me to tell her to take it down?
Sakura sighed as she typed back: No point. If anyone asks, you don’t know who I am. I really don’t want the media all up in my face right now.
There was a pause. And then Haku replied, Got it.
Sakura dropped her phone into her pocket. Where it promptly began vibrating. She read the name flashing across the screen. Saw the photo of the man with dark hair covering his left eye.
Sakura hesitated. And then she dragged her finger across the bottom of the screen.
“Hi, Senpai,” she finally replied. And she heard him chuckle.
“Hey there, Sakura-san. Uh... guess you’re in Sendai, huh?” he said. She had always liked that about Utakata. He at least didn’t lie about obvious things. Of course he would have spotted the video. It was his job to stay up-to-date on these kinds of things.
Sakura let out a deep breath.
“Yeah, I was for a little bit. Not anymore,” she replied.
There was a long pause. She could hear a keyboard clattering away in the background. A phone ringing. He was at work.
“…This is weird, right?” Utakata asked.
“It is,” she agreed. She couldn’t help but laugh, too.
“I kept telling myself I would check up on you after everything that happened. And then I looked at my calendar today and I was like ‘crap, she’s going to be mad at me’.”
Sakura pressed her lips together. Smile fading.
“I’m not mad,” she assured him. But it came out quieter than she had intended. So she said it again.
“I’m not mad.”
She rolled her weight onto the balls of her feet. And then back, onto her heels. Rocking back and forth as she craned her neck. Looking for the train.
“I’m sorry about that, by the way. I really did mean to keep in touch,” Utakata told her.
And then Sakura hesitated one more time. Before she asked: “...How’s he doing?”
“We haven’t talked much since he moved to St. Petersburg. But he seems pretty down. Well.... not that he shouldn’t be,” Utakata fumbled with his words. Sakura smiled, even though she knew he wouldn’t see it. She slipped her free hand into her pocket.
“I’m fine, Utakata-senpai. Don’t worry about me so much,” she told him.
“...You sure?” he asked.
“Yeah.”
They exchanged a few more words. He made her promise to make time for him next time she was this close to Tokyo before he hung up.
Soon after, the train arrived. As Sakura settled into her seat by the window, she found herself scrolling through Instagram again. Not on Samui’s post. Eventually people would lose interest. It would blow over quickly.
Instead, she found herself looking through her old photos. Perusing down the list, back years and years ago. Until she was wading through memories from three years ago.
Her thumb froze as she examined one of the posts. She was almost certain it was during the NHK Trophy, during one of the practice sessions. Maybe Karin had been the one to take it, since it was obviously a candid. Or maybe it was Haku.
She was wearing a white jacket with a Japanese flag sewn over her heart. Both her arms were up in the air, mouth wide open mid-laugh. And Kimimaro lay on the ice a little ways from her. Slumped over on his side. Laughing in that way he did when it was only the two of them. Silver hair spilling down his neck, eyes squinting shut.
She didn’t remember what had made the both of them laugh so hard. It was probably nothing. But it was everything, too.
She considered deleting the photo. Finger hovering over the screen. Sighing, she set her phone down. She wondered if he remembered what had been so funny at the time. He probably did.
He always held onto things longer than she did.

Not Your Pre-Pandemic Las Vegas A decade ago, after a rained-out Thanksgiving desert camping trip with our five kids, my wife, Kristin, and I headed to the nearest available lodging, the now-shuttered Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas. Watching our brood eat their Thanksgiving meal as cigarette smoke and slot-machine clamor wafted over their cheeseburgers, Kristin and I locked eyes with an unspoken message: We are the world’s worst parents. We have avoided Las Vegas with the kids since then, but an aborted drive to slushy Aspen this April with three of our heirs caused us to pause in Vegas. At the time, the city was just awakening from its Covid slumber, with mandatory masks and limited capacity in most indoor spaces, traffic so light that cars were drag-racing down the normally packed Strip, and a lingering, troubling question over the whole place: Will this reopening really be safe? But extraordinary things have been happening during this slumber, and while we were only going to spend one night there, we had so much fun that we ended up staying four. At first we spent most of our time in the relative safety of the outdoors, but then we started to relax along with the rest of the city, drowning our hands beneath the ubiquitous liquid sanitizer dispensers, masking up and heading indoors. I knew things had shifted in Sin City when, while maneuvering the minivan through some seemingly dicey neighborhood between Downtown and the Strip, I noted on the back alley wall of a hair salon a striking mural depicting the cult outsider artist Henry Darger’s seven Vivian Girl warriors in their trademark yellow dresses. What were the Vivian Girls doing here? Farther along, Vegas’s ghost-town adult stores, shuttered warehouses and other buildings were also sporting increasingly elaborate murals: a blood-squirting horned lizard spanning half a city block; a dog with an impressively slobbering tongue piloting an open cockpit plane; a colorful phoenix and dragon rising like fireworks from an empty parking lot — all producing collective surprised “Wows!” from inside our minivan. Las Vegas, it seems, is emerging from the Covid crisis as a place of spectacle and creativity, especially outside the air-conditioned gambling ghettos of the Strip. Over the next four days we did a lot of walking, crawling, flying and even railroading, all of it away from the casinos. We explored the Arts District, an area that has gone into hyper drive — so much so that we waited 30 minutes to get into my once “secret” Colombian breakfast joint, Makers & Finders — and wandered along Spring Mountain Road, the hub of the city’s Chinatown, rapidly expanding westward. In the midcentury mecca of East Fremont Street, a $350 million investment by the tech titan Tony Hsieh, who died last year, has produced a boulevard of fantastical art installations, restored buildings and a sculptural playground surrounded by stacked shipping containers converted to boutiques and cafes, all guarded by a giant, fire-spewing, steel praying mantis. “Vegas is going through a cultural renaissance,” a former member of the city’s Arts Commission, Brian “Paco” Alvarez, told me in a recent telephone interview. “A lot of the local culture that comes out of a city with two million unusually creative people didn’t stop during the pandemic.” A mysterious, windowless building The most striking newcomer is Area15, which opened in February in a mysterious, airport-hanger-size, windowless building two miles west of the Strip. Imagine an urban Burning Man mall (indeed, many of the sculptures and installations came from the annual arts festival held in northern Nevada), with some dozen tenants providing everything from virtual reality trips to nonvirtual ax throwing, accompanied by Day-Glo color schemes, electronic music, giant interactive art installations and guests flying overhead on seats attached to ceiling rails. Face masks are currently only mandatory in Area15 for self-identified unvaccinated people, though some of the attractions within still require face masks for everyone. Everywhere, we encountered the constant presence of cleaning attendants spraying and wiping surfaces. On the second floor of Area15’s art riot I met an old acquaintance from New York, Chris Wink, one of the co-founders of the joyously weird Blue Man Group, who was bringing his creative magic to Area15 in the form of a “Psychedelic Art House Meets Carnival Funhouse” called Wink World (adult tickets start at $18). Wink World is centered around six rooms with infinity mirror boxes reflecting Slinkys, plasma balls, fan spinners, Hoberman Spheres and ribbons dancing to an ethereal soundtrack of electronic music, rhythmic chanting and heavy breathing. “I worked on these installations for six years in my living room in New York,” Mr. Wink told me. “I was trying to evoke psychedelic experiences without medicine.” My unmedicated children were transfixed, as if these familiar toys frolicking into eternity were totems to their own personal nirvanas. I’ve never seen them stand so still in front of an art exhibit. Lava-filled caves and artificial lawns Omega Mart (adult admissions start at $45, face mask and temperature check mandatory), the biggest attraction in the complex, lines one side of the complex’s atrium and seemed — at first — to provide a banal respite from Area15’s sensory overload. Along the sale aisles I found Nut Free Salted Peanuts, Gut Monkey Ginger Ale and cans of Camels Implied Chicken Sop. My kids, good campers, immediately ducked into a small demonstration tent erected in the back of the store. They never came out again. A hidden entry brought them through the wall and into a world of artificial lawns, lava-filled caves, drab offices, a desert canyon, locker rooms, a secret bar and other divergent spaces often linked by hidden entrances. “Pull every knob and open every closet you see, Dad,” my daughter, Vivian, breathlessly advised as she whizzed by me for the fourth time in this 52,000-square-foot maze. Created by the renowned Santa Fe artist collective Meow Wolf (the name derived from pulling two random words from a hat during their first meeting), Omega Mart is an amalgamation of some 325 artists’ creations tied together by disparate overlapping story lines which one can follow — or not. For a short time, I tracked the story of the takeover of Omega Mart’s corporate headquarters by a hilariously manipulative New Agey daughter, and then got sidelined into the tale of a teen herbalist leading a rebellion to something else. I have no idea what I experienced other than that Brian Eno composed the music to one of the installations. None of my kids could explain what they experienced either, other than something mind-expanding. If it wasn’t for dinner, we might still be in there. Feasting in Chinatown Dinner! The choices are dizzying and there are now 10 Michelin-starred restaurants in the city. We weren’t going to any of them. Leaving Area15, even the distant lights of the Strip seemed relatively calming. But we were driving the opposite direction, to Chinatown. A decade ago, Chinatown was mainly a small enclave of restaurants and shops behind an ornate red gate overlooking a strip mall called Chinatown Plaza, catering to Vegas’s growing wave of Asian immigrants. Chinatown has now expanded to the far reaches of Spring Mountain Road, a desert Hong Kong of neon signs in Mandarin, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean, advertising restaurants, coffee houses, foot-massage salons and lots of stuff I couldn’t read. Our goal was an unlikely corner of a strip mall, where hides, in the Jones family’s collective opinion, the best Japanese restaurant in North America, Raku. Step behind an understated white backlit sign and you enter an aged wood interior of an intimate restaurant that you might find off a Kyoto alley. We slid into the family-style tables behind the main dining room and commenced to feast. There’s a $100 tasting menu if you are feeling adult, but my tribe ordered cream-like tofu with dried fish, foie gras skewers and a dozen other items. Chinatown became our go-to-spot for snacks and boba tea between adventures. A favorite spot became Pho 90, a low-key Vietnamese cafe with outstanding noodle dishes and exquisitely layered banh mi sandwiches for picnics in the wild. Beyond the city Las Vegas’s expanding grid abruptly surrenders to the desert, which might be the most overlooked part of Vegas family vacations. Red Rock Canyon, 17 miles west of the Strip, is like walking into a Road Runner cartoon with a Technicolor ballet of clashing tectonic formations. We grabbed our admittedly reluctant brood on a 2.4-mile, round-trip hike on the Keystone Thrust Trail through a series of gullies until we emerged above epic white limestone cliffs jutting through the ocher-colored mountains. Here we had our Vietnamese picnic overlooking the monolithic casinos in the distance. Our last night’s excursion into nature didn’t take any persuasion: Half an hour’s drive south to Boulder City, a company called Rail Explorers has set up rail bike tours on the abandoned tracks leading to the Hoover Dam construction site. We booked a sunset tour (from $85 to $150 for a tandem quad bike). After some quick instruction, we, along with three dozen other visitors, climbed into an 800-pound, four-person Korean-made bike rig and, giving the group ahead of us a three-minute head start for some space, started peddling. Our route was along four miles of desert track gently sloping into a narrowing canyon pass. As we effortlessly peddled at 10 miles per hour, we noticed that the spikes holding down the railroad ties were often crooked or missing. “I bet these were all driven in by hand,” my teenage son, Cody, a history buff, noted. In the enveloping dusk, we glimpsed shadows moving along the sagebrush: bighorn sheep, goats and other critters emerging for their nocturnal wanderings. But the most surreal sight was at the end of the ride, where a giant backlit sign for a truck stop casino appeared over a desert butte — Vegas was beckoning us back, but now we welcomed the summons. Here we were, peddling into the sunset, feeling more athletic, cool and (gasp!) enlightened than when we first rolled into Vegas four days ago. Oh what good parents we were! “The moniker of ‘Sin City’ is totally wrong,” Mr. Alvarez told me, “if you know where to look.” Source link Orbem News #Las #prepandemic #Vegas

Verse Updates for Icarus, Megumi, and Tryphon
Icarus || Old Guard
There’s some debate over if the thing that killed Icarus was the fall or the drowning. In truth, he doesn’t remember. He remembers the fall in detail: feathers trailing past his grasping hands, hot wax making paths down his skin, the hollow wishing sound of the air as he fell through it at terminal velocity. He remembers that.
But then there was pain, and water, and then he was waking in the shallows of sand bar, not dead but impossibly alive. He noticed he stopped ageing, and then there were wounds he should have died from that healed in minutes, and it was easy to realize that there was something wrong. Humans could not survive such lethal things, much less walk away from them in minutes.
The dreams came after that, or before that maybe. The millennia have made those first few days fuzzy. But in his dreams, there were others like him, in cities unlike the one he was in, but not so much that he could not find them. Icarus started to walk.
Megumi || Member of the Zodiac
The curse of the zodiac doesn’t care for names, it cares for blood. Megumi, even if he doesn’t know it, is a Sohma in blood. Saki had already been born strange, with too wide eyes, and an ability to watch people that unnerved those who weren’t used to it. And then there was Megumi- whole and healthy until his mother held him, and he turned into a rat, small enough to be cupped int he palm of her hand.
There was alarm of course, how could there not be? But she passed the small rat off to her husband, and when the doctor’s turned back around, it was easy to quickly answer that in her exhaustion, she’d passed her son off to her husband. They quickly learned that if she held him, he would turn into a rat, but if his father did, he was fine. They adapted: if they went out, Saki would hold onto their mother, and their father would hold Megumi.
He was cautious, and he learned fast to avoid physical contact, and when he was sick, to avoid going in to school, for fear of a sudden transformation.
Megumi grew up outside the stranglehold the Sohma held over the zodiac. And if there’s an empty place at New Years? A simple strange turn of events, perhaps a breaking of the curse.
*Megumi’s spirit can be changed if writing with other zodiac members.
Trypon || Yuri!!! On ICE
Tryphon remembers very clearly, the first ice show he ever got to see. It was late February, and one of the classes at the local rink were holding one to showcase their years talent. The costumes were transfixing, and the sound of the skates over the music settled under his skin comfortingly. He begged his mother for lessons, and at the next year he was one of the kids skating out over the ice to the claps of the parents in the audience.
When he was a little bit older, and there was a bit more money to spare, he took ballet lessons, and for a few brief months, he contemplated taking those instead, but you could not glide in ballet the way you could on ice, and the satisfaction from a dance never seemed to have the same feeling as it did on ice, but it did keep him more flexible, and during the half of the year where there was no ice, it was useful.
When he was 13, he was spotted by one of the actual coaches, and not just one of the trainers like he had during his childhood. I would mean he could train himself, and not just as part of a group. The offer was impossible to refuse. He left behind the skating classes, and started competing.
For what felt like almost the first time, he was surrounded by people tat understood, and that were devoting their lives to the same thing. Four years later, he transitioned into the senior division, where the competition was harder, and his coach would finally let him perform quads.
