Dargaville to Baldrock View Farm

Monday, February 10th, 2020

The mosquito started in on me at about 4am. It kept attacking me over the next two and a half hours. I did get sleep during this time. It was just punctuated by pillow swipes and cover fluffing to through the mosquito off. I finally got out of bed at 6:30am and started the long slow (on purpose) process of getting ready. After packing up, reading, and talking to family back in Texas I was ready to go about 9am.

I headed out of town to the South over a causeway bridge over a small arm of the bay. The Dutch guy started about the same time and was just ahead of me. He is lighter and faster than me so I never caught up. My plan was to take a diagonal route from Dargaville to Manugaturoto where I was going to have a late lunch.

Almost the entire 65 km was gravel roads. Only about 10 cars passed me and a couple of large semi-trucks the entire way. There were some beautifully forested parts of the ride and I'm glad I stayed off the main road. I again saw a number of turkey rafters. There would be good turkey hunting in these hills. I noticed some peacock feathers but did not see any today.

After finally making it to Manugaturoto I decided on having lunch at the Tulip Cafe. I ordered a bacon and egg pie, half egg sandwich, half chicken sandwich, raspberry lemonade, and a latte. After lunch, I cycled over to the 4 square and picked up a large water bottle, banana, and 2 baby food pouches.

I headed out of town until I got to Mountain Rd. which cut diagonally to Highway 1. The ride was pretty quick and the last of the gravel for the day.

After getting on Highway 1 I had about 10km to go before the Baldrock View Farm where I was to camp tonight. I stopped at another 4 square grocery store in Kaiwaka and grabbed coconut water, apricot pastry, and a box of crackers. I ate the apricot pastry and drank the coconut water and packed the crackers for dinner.

After climbing out of Kaiwaka for about 4km the turnoff for the Baldrock View Farm appeared around a corner. After climbing a hill to the campground I paid 12.50 NZD for a site. I set up my tent next to the Dutch guy. Yep, the same Dutch guy. We did not plan this. I had a nice shower for 2 NZD and ate some crackers with peanut butter for dinner.

The Baldrock View Farm is very peaceful and pretty. There are chickens everywhere.
