Kevin Cage of @spotlightsaga reviews... Santa Clarita Diet (S01E09) The Book Airdate: February 3, 2017 @netflix Ratings: (Streaming Only) Score: 8/10 ****************A*N*D**************** Santa Clarita Diet (S01E10) Baka, Bile, and Baseball Bats Airdate: February 3, 2017 @santaclaritadietnf Ratings: (Streaming Only) Score: 8.25/10 **********THE BOOK (S01E09)********* The numbers very much speak in Joel's favor, and I would agree, but I think picking an MVP was way harder than the numbers would suggest. Drew Barrymore really gave Sheila an honest motherly edge, we've seen her go into protection mode and we know she loves her daughter... But as she suggests in 'The Book' they've been putting off (and even more so 'leaving out' Abby)... Marooning Abby in a state where she must rebel. When you take all the humor that blankets 'Santa Clarita Diet' and pull it away, you're left with several key ingredients. 1 person fighting for their survival and now facing their possible mortality which in turn effects the other 2 in profound ways, 2 people doing everything in their power to keep their marriage and their family together... And 1 teenager who is aware of these monstrous acts, accepts them, but it stoned out of being involved and more importantly feeling like she can't contribute and be a part of this family. It's not until Sheila goes all out and skips a possible date with a cure to spend time with her daughter that Abby truly realizes that they love her dearly and are only trying to protect her. It's pretty deep actually, and when you can make a Horror-Comedy this relatable and, excuse the pun, digestible, then you've really created a unique piece of moving art. Joel knows that no matter what, he has to save Sheila... Whereas Sheila is now considering the real possibility that death and decay could be inevitable. Joel has proved that he is one of the most loyal, loving, dedicated and passionate husbands on the face of this planet. And who better to join him on his journey to the Paranormal Convention than Eric, another male who has proved an incredible amount of commitment. He's been Abby's rock through all of this and she his, tho his problems with coming of age in 'nerdom' and battling an emotionally abusive step-father pale in comparison to Abby's dance with a Zombie Mother. Joel follows his lead with Eric to the Paranormal Convention that ends up being a dead end *almost*. The man who had been claiming to have knowledge & access of this Serbian book was a fraud, but apparently Eric has been using his experience with all of this through his perspective on a Reddit forum... And really, what white guy between the ages of 15-49 wouldn't? When I saw Ravi Patel (Ryan) at the convention, I instantly knew he would be the actual lead, Ravi's face is far too recognizable not to be used for a more pivotal role. We get great moments with Joel at this convention that really put him over... I thought using his Ken-Doll like appearance to frighten the other convention goers was absolutely hilarious, and probably pretty accurate. Let's be honest, I have a huge appreciation for all types but I'll take an average lovable passionate chubby nerd over the Ken-Doll type any day, so in no way am I shaming anyone... But Timothy Olyphant has a very charismatic, California prototype look to him, its undeniable. And though we use these types on screen, confidence and perfection like that can breathe off-putting intimidation into the air. That's why seeing it play out like it did was so funny. Ryan (Ravi Patel) is drawn in by the connection to Eric's sub-Reddit and he isn't intimidated because he's not there trying to impress anyone, he's there because he's clearly experienced a similar phenomenon and points Joel to the one REAL person who just maybe able to help Sheila... Dr. Cora Wolf. That fact that Wolf is played by Arrested Development veteran Portia de Rossi excites me to no end. I want Sheila to get help because I have truly grown attached to the dedication and love these people have for one another, but there's another part of me that only wants her to sustain Sheila... Cuz dammit we need a S2. ***BAKA, BILE, AND BASEBALL BATS*** Don't get mad, now... Get GLAD, you know, like the trash bags, because there is definitely going to be some more corpses to dispose of in S2... And for the record, for you unadventurous missionary style Joe's... You lick the hairy parts, not actually eat them. If you just take a look at my review from the previous episode, you'll see that this actually gave us (me, anyway) exactly what we needed from a first season of SCD. You see it's not about conclusions, because the story is just beginning. We just witnessed the beginning of a very complicated story... And like I said, pull the covers of humor back, then the sheets of horror, and we have a tale of a family going through one of the most horrendous and difficult times possible, ever, in their lives, or anyone for that matter! We've been building up the perfect storm of a different kind of teen angst, one that was brewing right under our noses and didn't truly see it until it was at the back stretch. Yes, this is a Horror-Comedy, but it's a brand new breed of the genre... No I'm not talking about Zombies, they've been done to DEATH. I'm talking about a Horror-Comedy with real convictions of love and romance and not just the kind between two married lovers... The type that can only exist in a family coming together in the worst type of crisis. See, you can try and protect your family all you want, your daughter, your son, but no matter their age they most definitely are much more aware and understand more than you could ever possibly give them credit for. Kids just know, five of seventeen. Abby has been rebelling because she has been iced out by the two people she could have easily sold down the river in a fit of hormone induced teenage rage. All she wanted to do was help, and really there was no need to protect her, because she already knew all the specifics, she was already in danger. Sheila was unraveling and was literally right on the verge of going feral, make that IS literally right on the verge of going feral. With Joel jailed, and Dr. Wolf fleeing a messy scene but graciously leaving behind everything Abby needs to stop this from taking her mom from Undercover Californian Zombie Realtor to full on Walker, it's now finally Abby's chance to play a pivotal role in keeping this family together. Albeit, one helluva unexpected cliffhanger, but hey... Bates Motel has given us some pretty unbelievable moments leaving us off at the climax of a season, just to hold us off till it finally returns. So really, this finale was everything it needed to be and if it gave us any closure then it wouldn't really be doing this show, it's Flash-like pacing, and visceral existential tribulations any justice. Are you in for the whole ride... Or are you getting off right before the big drop. Don't be a pussy, catch me in S2.

Santa Clara Diet | Portia de Rossi (Dr. Cora Wolfe)
Santa Clara Diet was so-so for me… Victor Fresco is one of my favourite comedy writers; he created/wrote one of my favourite TV Shows Better Off Ted. But honestly Drew Barrymore ruined Santa Clara Diet for me, her acting is just terrible (I haven’t watched her since Charlie’s Angels).
But I’m so grateful that Victor was able to get Portia de Rossi for the last two episodes of the series as always she brought some much needed acting talent, comic relief and she shined as bright as she did in Better Off Ted or Arrested Development - she was only in the last two episodes ( “The Book” and “Baka, Bile and Baseball Bats”) but those two episodes were the best episodes in the season.
