“It's none of your business.” Their eye screwed near shut from their scowl. “Tell me everything you know.”

“I don't know anything. I don't know anyone. I've never met anyone until you who wore red on their person. This has been a fascinating conversation, but I must be leaving.”

With that conversation neatly closed, Sylv turned to go.

“You're full of shit.” They pulled their sword out, leveling it at Sylv’s chest. “If you don't tell me right now, I'll split your damn stomach open!”

Sylv’s mouth screwed up. “How determined were you to arrive at this conclusion? I said— ”

Baiken thrust her shoulder forwards, a chain shooting out from the recesses of her sleeve and catching Sylv. Pulling xem close, Baiken followed up with a spinning sword, knocking Sylv away with a final jab to the jaw. “I'll just have to beat it out of you!”

We meet Baiken.

Xe really should’ve asked Justice about what was concerning her. Her curiosity was digging at her like thorns, and it could be days or weeks until she saw the woman again. Justice didn’t exactly have a forwarding address. Chewing xer lip, she debated if it would be possible to get a phone into Justice’s hands. The woman absolutely had the magical control to keep one on her… But on the other hand, it wasn’t as if xe herself had a phone.

Her mouth twisted. Emergency beacons? There was a point by which they couldn’t be seen anymore. A newspaper ad wouldn’t work for the same reason. Had anyone invented tracking letters yet? As caught up in xer thoughts as she was, Sylv barely remembered to offer a hasty nod to the other person on the road.

“You there.”

“Huh?” Sylv looked back at them. Now that xe bothered paying attention, xer eyes fixed on the pink on their forehead and over their eye. It wasn’t anything she’d ever seen before, and that made it interesting. Paired with their long hair and clothing trim, they seemed to have an affection for the color. “Me?”

“Who else? You're the only one here.”

“There could've been a dog. Or a bird, or something.”

They groaned, hand raking through their hair. “The hell kind of thought is that?”

“It happens frequently.”

“Bah. Whatever.” Their hand landed on the sword at their waist. “I'm looking for someone. You seen a red woman around?”

A red woman. A woman with a large amount of red on her person. Sylv’s mind shot to Justice. Best to confirm, first.

“May I ask why you wish to know?”

“It's none of your business.” Their eye screwed near shut from their scowl. “Tell me everything you know.”

Sylv recalled how Justice had mentioned concerning things going on within the country. Though she’d planned to keep it a secret, it was possible somebody had already found out about whatever it was she was doing. And considering the demanding way the stranger spoke, xe doubted they were planning anything good if they found her.

“I don't know anything. I don't know anyone. I've never met anyone until you who wore red on their person. This has been a fascinating conversation, but I must be leaving.”

With that conversation neatly closed, Sylv turned to go.

“You're full of shit.” They pulled their sword out, leveling it at Sylv’s chest. “If you don't tell me right now, I'll split your damn stomach open!”

Sylv’s mouth screwed up. “How determined were you to arrive at this conclusion? I said— ”

HEAVEN OR HELL.

Hitting the ground with a crack, Sylv spat out onto the dirt. Summoning xer hammer to hand, xe whipped it up, rising with it. Baiken slashed her sword down, blowing the attack away with a crack of red thunder.

Shoving xer heel into the dirt, Sylv planted the head of the hammer into the dirt, resting her chin atop xer hands.

“You've broken the societal rules of combat. Thus, you cannot complain about what I am about to do.” Xe pulled back into her fighting stance, hammer vanishing.

LET'S ROCK.

Sylv slammed out immediately with her hammer, driving the head towards xer opponent’s stomach. Baiken blocked the attack with her sword, holding steady as Sylv pressed forward.

“Big mistake, you dog.” Baring her teeth, Baiken yanked her sword from its scabbard, jabbing it at Sylv. It hit square in the gut, bursting into cherry blossom petals as she yanked it back. Raising it above her head, she jabbed the butt of the hilt towards Sylv’s skull, yanking her knee up to smash into xer chin.

Skidding back, Sylv slammed the claw of xer hammer into the dirt, breaking up huge chunks of earth. Spitting to the side, Sylv sprinted forward. “Where’d those petals come from?” Jumping above her, Sylv tucked into a quick roll, bringing xer leg out to bash xer heel against the back of Baiken’s head as xe flew overhead. Landing, she twisted smoothly to face her again. “Seems pretty flashy. Didn’t know someone’d use something like that in an actual fight.” Sylv twisted her face into a smile. “Dunno if you’re taking this seriously as you should.” Xe swung her hammer down.

“GRAAA!” Shoving out a tatami mat, Baiken bared her teeth, heaving. “Don’t spew shit at me! It only makes you more disgusting.” Whipping her sword out again, she slashed down at Sylv’s wrists. The sword clashed against xer bracelets, making an awful shriek of noise.

“Ghhhhh!” Sylv threw her wrist, forcing Baiken’s sword away. Xe dropped down, sweeping her leg out. “Don’t! Don’t do that! I can’t do that!” Shoving forward, xe twisted her legs between Baiken’s, kicking out her knee and forcing her down. “I can’t handle that noise!”

“Kinda shithead r’you, telling me that?!” Throwing out a barely formed tatami mat, Baiken heaved herself off the ground. “I don’t give a shit what you want! Tell me about her, or I’ll slice you like a pig!”

“If your threats haven’t worked yet, I don’t see why they would now.” Sylv’s mouth twitched, but her eyes remained zeroed in on Baiken. “I’m committed to ensuring that you never find who you’re looking for.” Sprinting forward, xe jumped high in the air. Right above Baiken, she summoned her hammer, breaking momentum and spinning rapidly to hit the ground— and the one standing right above it.

Shoving herself backwards, Baiken slashed out with her sword, hitting Sylv off course and straight into the dirt. Throwing her grappling claw out, she yanked Sylv towards her, bashing her in the face just as xe got close and planting xem in the dirt again. Kicking her away, she kicked a tatami mat after xem.

“Damn bitch doesn’t know when to quit.” She spat, moving forward.

“Better than not.” Sylv shoved herself to xer feet. “Ugh.”

“Just lay down and die already!” Baiken slashed out with her sword, movements wild with rage.

“Exactly what I was thinking.” Twisting her arms, Sylv caught the sword in the claw of her hammer. Twisting, xe yanked, heaving Baiken off the ground and into the air, slamming her down behind Sylv. Pulling her hammer free, she bashed the face into Baiken, sending her skidding across the ground.

“Aaaargh!” Baiken bellowed, a guttural sound.

SLASH!

“My blood is rushing. I could go for more.” Leaning forward on xer hammer, Sylv peered down at Baiken.

Spitting on the ground, Baiken staggered to her feet. Grabbing her sword off the ground, she pointed the tip of the blade at Sylv. “Tch. I can tell you’re hiding something, no matter what you say.” She bared her teeth. “Tell me where she is, or I’ll gut you like a fish!”

“I’m hiding nothing. And even if I were, I wouldn’t tell you a thing.”

Pulling xer hammer out once more, she leveled the head towards Baiken. “If you don’t leave me be and leave this potential person in peace, I’ll break your legs.”

Quick as a flash, the point of Baiken’s sword pointed to Sylv. “Are you some sort of dog, biting at anybody threatening your master?” Her voice raised, nearly to a shout. “What’d that musician do to make you so loyal?!”

Their weapons hung in the air, minimerta from each other.

Sylv’s heel ground in the dirt. “Even if I—”

The samurai’s words rang in xer head.

“Wait. Musician?”

She barked a laugh. “What kind of guard dog are you? She’s always humping her damn guitar.” Her mouth broke into a scowl. “I’ll break that thing over her neck someday.”

“...” Sylv didn’t move. Long seconds passed, the tension in the air only thickening. Neither weapon lowered.

Baiken shattered the silence. “And if you don’t tell me what you know, I’ll—

“—I believe there’s been some sort of misunderstanding.” Sylv adjusted her grip. “What does your red woman look like?”

“Hwa?” Face screwing up, Baiken shifted her back foot. “The hell are you asking for?”

“You’ll know if you answer me.”

“Don’t piss me off even more. I know you know already.” She shot back. “Red hat, red clothes, and red boots just like yours. That satisfy you?”

“...” Sylv stared at her as if unfurling her skin to examine the muscle and bone beneath. “Yep. There’s been a miscommunication.” Xer shoulders fell, though she continued pointing the hammer. “I don’t have a clue as to the woman you’re talking about.” Tilting her head, xer mouth twitched. “So… It turns out I’ve been telling the truth this whole time.

“Wha—” Drawing her sword back, Baiken gave an incredulous scoff. “The hell do you mean? I could tell you were hiding something!”

“I thought you were after my friend. She has red hair.” Dropping xer hammer, it vanished before hitting the ground. “It appears we had no reason to fight, after all.”

“...” Baiken sheathed her sword. “What a letdown.”

“At least we caused no permanent harm to each other.” Sylv shrugged, all tension gone. “Though, if you want to make it up to me…” Her eyes trained on Baiken’s loose sleeve. “Could I get a look at those weapons of yours? You handled them well, and I’ve never seen anything like them.”

“And you never will.” Scoffing, Baiken cracked her neck. “I don’t show my weapons to anybody. Piss off.”

With that, she left.

Sylv stared after her, face blank.

“...What an asshole.”
