¡Primero en Filipinas y en Asia! First in the Philippines and in Asia! . . . . . Trivia: The Lagunilad Underpass is a pedestrian underpass connecting the Manila City Hall and Intramuros. Constructed in the 1960s, it was named as Lagusnilad [from the words "lagus" which means to pass and "nilad" which is the local name for Yamstick Mangrove (Scyphiphora hydrophylacea) that was said to be abundant along the Manila Bay and Pasig River during the early times, thus the capital city was called "Maynila"] by the city government of Manila during the term of Mayor Antonio Villegas. After sixty (60) years, the newly-redeveloped underpass was inaugurated during the time of Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso on August 24, 2020, resolving its major issues such as flooding, vagrants, and security. Aside from that, its old wall was replaced by the mural and the bas-relief artwork created in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and NCCA Gerilya artists inspired from the works of the National Artist for Painting, famed muralist Carlos Modesto "Botong" Villaluz Francisco, which is truly evident on its brand-new look. . . . . .
