THE BAD SEED (2018)
😿Cat Dies
Horror movie that makes you question how far you would go for your family or at least your kids (if you got ‘em). Rob Lowe is our Scream King in this and I think he does an excellent job of being a concerned father but also a concerned person existing in the world his daughter is creating. McKenna Grace does a great job being a creepy kid too.
⭐⭐⭐.5
Trigger Warning Child Death
We start out swinging with little Emma watching a cat drown. Yikes a million. This kid really is a Bad Seed. We meet papa Rob Lowe who is totally not in tune with his creepy daughter but that will come to a head later, I’m sure. Emma is obsessed with success and will do whatever she needs to do to get it, like pushing a kid off of a cliff. Yeah, really. She thinks she was all slick about it but there is no such thing as a perfect murder. There is also a line in there about how Emma thinks that drowning doesn’t hurt because her dad told her that and it’s like, no man, that is not true at all, I’m pretty sure drowning hurts a lot. (YIKES) Anyway, they get a sketchy babysitter who is right away onto Emma but Emma catches Chloe stealing so Emma has blackmail over her. It isn’t until Chloe finds the metal of the dead boy in Emma’s room that the power flips and papa Rob Lowe is informed and he starts to ask some serious questions about why his kid has this metal.
Emma claims that she won it from the dead child before he died. They return the metal to his parents and find out her teacher died then Emma feels free as a bird which is very alarming to papa Rob Lowe. For Emma and her short-sighted child brain, her problems are over, but her rash actions are going to lead to her getting caught. Papa Rob Lowe will totally notice that the wasp nest from the garage is missing and find it strange that that’s how the teacher died. He totally notices but does/says nothing about the missing wasps nest. The relationship between Emma and Chloe reminds me a lot of The Babysitter, but more hateful of course. Yeah, very hateful as Emma sets Chloe on literal fire. Liar, liar, pants and whole body on fire, I guess. If I were Chloe I would have expressed that if Emma killed me too that people would catch her. But nope, Emma is just pretending the sitter was smoking in the garage. Papa Rob Lowe finally connects the dots of death all around Emma and confronts her later that night.
I felt some kind of way when papa Rob Lowe finally raises his voice against the killer kid (something akin to the vapors). He gets her to admit to everything, she has even killed before (her first nanny). The police need to ask questions but papa Rob Lowe isn’t sure what to do at this point. This isn’t a malevolent spirit or paranormal entity, this is just his cold-hearted daughter killing folks. What is he supposed to do about the fact that his kid is so rotten to the core? Well after Emma attempts to kill him, killing them both is his idea, but of course she switches the drugged cocoa for the regular one. He should have pulled a Princess Bride and poisoned them both. He intended for them both to die anyway. Ugh. Either way we get to the end and papa Rob Lowe isn’t strong enough to pull the trigger on his own little girl and he gets shot in the process so he is dead and the only one who knows about Emma’s crazy crimes is the Aunt she is going to go live with but of course the Aunt doesn’t believe a nine (9) year old did any of that dark shit so it is all going to happen again.

When I tell you that this card literally made me feral, like I was not expecting this, my mouth literally just fell open. I love Zayne so bad. I love being a Zayne girlie. The way he's just sitting there, I mean phew, I would literally pounce on him and ride him crazy, going at it like we're rabbits.
Either that, or I'd just get on my knees and start going in. Like, I'm talking grapefruit technique levels of vacuuming his cock like a rabid animal. I don't know whether I'd want to be on top of him or beneath him, he's just so... mm.. Good lawhd. I would drain him of his essence. On a pool table too? I'll play with his balls real good. We can play pool with our bodies. BALLS IN THE HOLE?! YES PLEASE‼️‼️‼️
I can just imagine being on top of him on that pool table, making him moan like crazy with how slow you ride him, every roll of your hips, making him grip your hips and guide your movements with his big strong hands, trying not to be loud so that no one else hears your little teaching session.
If Zayne has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Zayne has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Zayne has only one fan, then that is me. If Zayne has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Zayne, then I am against the world.

That’s cute; thanks for the addition!
I actually watched Castle because it was on TV in France too. I must have seen this episode but don’t remember the song...
Since the series ended before Far Cry 5 came out and they all had French voices anyway, I initially didn’t realize John Seed and Kevin Ryan were played by the same actor. When I did, I tried to rewatch a bit of Castle in English to hear Seamus Dever’s real voice... but I just kept hearing John and couldn’t focus on anything else :’)
About John whistling "We'll Meet Again" in that one scene...I always figured it was a reference to Dr.Strangelove, since the same song plays at the end when all the atom bombs fall. Foreshadowing, maybe?
(I also encountered "Only You" in the wild, in an older movie called Hot Shots. It was an incredibly 90s parody of Top Gun, and featured a truly jarring and hilarious moment with the song.) Anyway, love your blog! <3
I’ve never watched Dr. Strangelove but I’ve seen other people say “We’ll Meet Again” was a reference to the movie, especially when it plays during the credits of the “Resist ending”, and I agree that it can’t be a coincidence!
And according to Wikipedia…
During the Cold War, Lynn's recording was included in the package of music and programmes held in 20 underground radio stations of the BBC's Wartime Broadcasting Service (WTBS), designed to provide public information and morale-boosting broadcasts for 100 days after a nuclear attack.
…so that might also explain why the song is often associated with nuclear holocausts in people’s minds and popular culture.
Now, I’d love to know if John whistling “We’ll Meet Again” during the Confession is just foreshadowing and a message from the devs to the players (as it is when it plays during the credits, since it also teases New Dawn) or a personal message from the Baptist to the Deputy. And if it’s the latter, what is he trying to say? Is he simply alluding to the impending Collapse because he’s seen Dr. Strangelove or is the veiled promise that they’ll “meet again” related to the cat-and-mouse game he’s playing? I can’t decide…
And thank you :D
#also I think john and seamus have the same eyes/eyebrows so even just seeing him on screen was distracting#mind you this was in 2018 or 2019 and I was very very obsessed with john#I just kept smiling like an idiot haha#far cry 5#john seed#in french john and kevin aren’t played by the same actor#but coincidentally richard castle’s french voice in also pagan min’s#castle#nice show by the way#too bad they were forced to rush the ending#it deserved a better finale

Please can I ask for some headcanons about dating Rupert Travis (Detroit: Become Human)? Thank you!
A/N: Anonn you're an angellll for requesting my boi Rupert 😭 I have missed him so much❤️
Also I'm sorry this is so long overdue, I've been wanting to publish this for a long time but there's been a lot of drama over the years... but I need comfort from my favourite android babe during these trying times 💕
Also @majestickitty, I think you'll like this 😏 (Also sorry for not being able to help you a while ago with finding all the Rupert fics that are still up, I wish he had gotten more stuff/his tag would still be somewhat active/that so many of those few people who wrote for him in 2018 hadn't deactivated and taken all those fics with them, and the fact that so many nowadays just makes ChatGPT generate fics and publishes them as their own... doesn't really encourage me to check any of the x reader tags anymore to be honest)
Note: This is for human!reader because the request didn't ask for android!reader and my default reader is a human unless the fandom has no humans at all.
So, you first met Rupert when he came to your pet shop and you caught him pocketing a bag of bird food.
You immediately ran over and grabbed his wrist, which made him pry his hand away from you and try to make a run for it, but you managed to push him back, his cap slipping off in the process.
You almost dialed 911, as he was scrambling for his cap and then… you saw it.
A LED blinking red on the side of his head. You immediately froze, not knowing what to do.
“You’re… an android?” you asked, which made Rupert frown and look up.
You weren’t afraid, you were actually putting your phone away.
You crouched down, looking at the now banged up bag of bird food, and lifted it, some seeds falling out.“What do you need bird food for?”
He didn’t answer, he just eyed you and you got up, shutting the blinds and locking the door. “Probably better to ensure nobody else sees you. The way things are right now, you’re at risk.”
His LED kept blinking between yellow and red as he sat there on the ground, clearly expecting you to do something to him, but instead, you made your way to the storage room and returned with a new bag of seeds. “How much do you need?”
His LED only blinked as yellow now - you took it as a sign that he was confused.
No wonder he is, you thought. Most of us would kill him on sight.
When he still didn’t answer, you went back to the storage room and soon you were at the counter with a backpack and stuffed as many bags of seeds as you could there.
“Let’s agree that once you guys get the freedom you deserve, you’ll pay me back, alright? And you can always come back if you need more seeds, too.”
You handed him the bag and opened the door for him. He hesitated for a second, but then nodded at you and took eye contact for a moment, before he put on the cap again and left your shop.
You looked at him walking down the street for a moment, before you closed the door and vacuumed your floor from the spilled seeds.
A few days later, you meet him again at a park.
You see him sitting on a bench, throwing seeds to pigeons flocking in front of him, and you approach him slowly.
He looks up at you briefly, then lowers his eyes to the pigeons again.
You shift your weight from side to side for a moment, before you quietly ask, “Can I sit?”
He doesn’t move for a moment, his hand freezes at your question too.
Then, he nods slowly.
You sit down before you risk a glance at him.
You notice he no longer has a LED, probably realising it’s too risky for him. His eyes are shadowed by his cap, but you know he’s watching you in a way too.
You swallow. “All of us aren’t bad, you know. But I understand you may feel that way.”
He lets out a breath, before he nods. And then, he finally speaks. “I’m sorry for trying to steal from your shop.”
You smile a little. “It’s okay.”
And that established a small, but surprisingly quickly budding, friendship between you.
You helped him with feeding birds by providing him seeds, and in return he helped you around in your shop sometimes.
Not with customers present of course, but he was there in the morning before you opened and after closing, cleaning up and sorting your ordered packages of supplies.
He seemed to find joy from getting something to do and to feel being appreciated, especially when it involved animals. Even though your shop didn’t have animals on sale.
And after the revolution/the peaceful demonstration and Rupert being able to live more freely, you were able to officially hire him and he would have had the right to rent his own apartment…
But instead, he wanted to stay with you.
You see, your friendship had grown into something more, but only after now, Rupert was brave enough to confess his feelings for you.
And that’s when your love story began.
He likes to lay on your lap as you sit on the couch watching TV or laying in bed, just feel you running your hands through his hair.
No human, nor other android, had ever shown any affection to him, and it was partly surprising really how much of a cuddlebug he was when he got to taste it.
You also teach him to cook because he had watched some romantic movie while home alone and told you he may want to surprise you with dinner sometime, because the movie had such a scene.
It… didn’t go well. At first.
WB200’s weren’t meant to be cooks, so it wasn’t among his natural skills.
But him being an android was a helping factor in it, because he learned pretty quickly as he was able to memorise every single line from the cookbook from only one read.
His reservations towards humans is a long-term issue despite loving you.
Fortunately your friends are understanding of it, chipping off his nervousness bit by bit.
And eventually, he grows to trust humans a little bit more.
The hardcore anti-android people left Detroit anyway, so there wasn’t that much danger outside anyway. At least not more than for humans anyway.
And one day, after about a year from the demonstration and President Warren declaring androids are free, you come home to see Rupert wearing his LED again.
You smile at the sight of it, and all the memories flashed by you — him trying to steal from your shop had resulted into the love of your life.
And now, you could finally show your love as a human and an android.

Why I'm Not Allowed On Twitter Unsupervised Any More: A Photo Essay
Key Notes:
Since this was posted I discovered that the books had briefly been available in the UK under the name Peter Beagle rather than Peter S. Beagle in the mid-90s, which is why they didn't show up on the British Library search
The article by Tor.com @torbooks: Peter S. Beagle Has Finally Regained the Rights to His Body of Work
If you want our gorgeous limited edition, I believe there are still a handful left (except for the US and Canada, sorry lads), and you can get it here. I'm not kidding when I say I got a little teary-eyed when these showed up.
[Image Description: A tweet thread from the Gollancz twitter dated 20th July 2022, which goes as follows -
Tweet 1: You may have seen that we're printing a Brand New Edition of The Last Unicorn. We're very excited! I was asked to tweet about it. I wasn't asked to do it quite like this, but I also wasn't asked NOT to do it like this, and I have the twitter login so whose fault is that? (Thread emoji, and gif from the film Scream reading 'The Call is coming from inside the house!')
Tweet 2: Imagine, if you will, you are a small child in the UK during the late 80s/early 90s. You might look a bit like this, or you might have had parents who didn't choose suffering (ask my mum about The Saga of the Hat) (an image of a small girl approximately 3 years old wearing a blue dress and a big white hat)
Tweet 3: Imagine you have a cool older cousin, one who, as you get age, introduces you to fantasy films like Ladyhawk and The Princess Bride and has a post the whole family knows as 'the vampire and the naked lady'. She's extremely responsible for the way you turn out as an adult.
Tweet 4: One year, for your birthday, this cousin buys you a video. It's the first video that is yours, not to share. It has a bright yellow cover. The butterfly scares you. But you watch it on a loop. You don't realise how special it is, but it's a seed that burrows into your brain. (An image of a VHS of The Last Unicorn)
Tweet 5: A decade or so later, in your teens, you rediscover it. None of your friends have heard of it, despite also being fantasy-inclined. That's odd, you think. Is this an outlandishly weird title? Then you get older and you realise: no, it isn't. (Principal Skinner meme reading 'Am I out of touch? No, it's the people who don't know about The Last Unicorn who are wrong')
Tweet 6: Time and tech march on, you get a DVD of the film. You realise it's got Christopher Lee in it! And Angela Lansbury! Your mum tries to get you to listen to songs by America other than the soundtrack, but the only one that really sticks is the other one they did about a horse. (Gif of Walter White from Breaking Bad singing along to Horse With No Name)
Tweet 7: You realise that the film is based on a book. Like The Princess Bride, which you've also read (after spending longer than you're proud of trying to find an unabridged edition). 'Neat,' you think, 'I'll have to read that!'
Tweet 8: And then you can't find it. Because, as mentioned previously, you're in the UK. The Last Unicorn was published for the first time in 1968. But, if you look at the British Library's National Bibliography (super neat resource btw), that was, uh, about it. (screenshot of the search results from the National Bibliography showing four editions of The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle, one from Gollancz in 2022, one from IDW in 2019, one from Tachyon Publications in 2018, and one from Bodley Head in 1968)
Tweet 9: The Tachyon edition is the unfinished first draft of the story. The IDW edition is a gorgeous graphic novel. But in terms of the novel? I don't know how many reprints it had (if anyone knows, I'd love to find out), but there's a good chance it went out of print in the 70s.
Tweet 10: The film, however, was released in 1982. Although it didn't make it to the UK until 1986. Conservative estimates could put that between 10 and 15 years since the book was last available in the UK. This gives you a generation in the UK who only know the story through the film! (A screenshot of the IMDB page showing the different release dates for The Last Unicorn around the world)
Tweet 11: The screenplay was written by Peter S. Beagle, and made by the legendary animation directors Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass. That's right, the guys behind Thundercats and 2 out of the 3 films based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
Tweet 12: The Book has been in print in the USA (and possibly all of North America) constantly since its publication, so it seems baffling that people in the UK haven't heard of it. As the internet became more prominent, however, it became easier to just... import a copy of the book.
Tweet 13: But! This also isn't quite as simple as you think. You see, until last year the rights to The Last Unicorn were tied up in legal limbo. And the US edition of the book contained changes that Peter wasn't happy with. (Link to the Tor.com article about the rights)
Tweet 14: Back to you, the 80s/90s kid, who is now an adult, happy that unicorns are A Thing again and you're living your best life. You're very easy to buy presents for. Your partner despairs of unicorns. You get a job working in books about magic and space. (unicorn emoji and photograph of a collection of unicorn memorabilia, including three different versions of The Last Unicorn)
Tweet 15: You mention that one day you would like to publish The Last Unicorn. That if you did, you would like to do a really beautiful edition of it. And you would like it to be purple. Because since the film is what you know, you associate it with purple.
Tweet 16: And, after taking a very circuitous route, here we are! This is the original text, that was first published in 1968. Reading it after you have only seen the film is the strangest experience - like being introduced to a very dear friend that you have never met before.
Tweet 17: Peter's screenplay kept the voice of the story so well, you can hear the characters when you read the book. But now there's so much more depth, softness and warmth to it. The butterfly doesn't seem so scary any more. And, it's beautiful. And it's purple. (Image of a hardback edition of The Last Unicorn, with a black base, purple background, and a linocut image of the unicorn in her wood. On the black cover underneath is a foiled unicorn with the moon and butterfly, the page edges are sprayed purple, and the endpapers are black with silver butterflies)
Tweet 18: Anyway, I've taken you on a three day trip that could have been done in a single tweet, but that's what happens when you let me drive. This edition is the limited exclusive one only available through the Gollancz Emporium and you can preorder here: (link to Gollancz Emporium)
Tweet 19: But there is also a standard edition available through all booksellers! You'll be getting the author's preferred text, with an introduction from Patrick Rothfuss. There's also a brand new audiobook and it will be available in eBook for the first time ever.
Tweet 20: It's like going from famine to feast, and I wasn't able to talk about this for months so now I am able to talk about it, I'm going to make the social media team cry. UNICORNS. SPECIAL EDITION. PURPLE. The End.
Tweet 21: Additional behind the scenes bonus detail - I did take this cover to the art meaning while wearing a unicorn onesie.
Tweet 22: The comms team wrestling me away from the twitter account: (gif of Ross from Friends shouting 'Stop typing! Stop typing!')

my little piece of advice to anyone younger than me is to spend as much time as possible outdoors and in nature, preferably visiting the same places often and throughout the year. maybe that sounds trite but i genuinely think there is so much perspective to be drawn from that experience, observing the coming and going of the seasons and taking note of little changes that take place from year to year. i worked full-time in an old-growth forest here from sept 2018 to sept 2021 and i came to know its 65 acres like the back of my hand, noticing when certain plants would have a good year or a bad year, when a tree would fall and open up a new pocket of sunlight on the forest floor for long-dormant seeds to take advantage of, when the river otters would unexpectedly come back and feast on the bullfrog and green frog tadpoles all summer long and i learned to be okay when things wouldn’t pan out quite as i’d hoped. there were winters i couldn’t find a spotted salamander no matter how many logs i rolled, springs that seemed to pass by in the blink of an eye, summers where the chanterelles weren’t quite as widespread, falls where the leaf color didn’t pop quite as much and you begin to learn to be okay with it. the seasons come like waves and no two are the same, but you can rejoice in knowing that another wave is always coming and that it brings with it untold surprises and new layers of growth. i think it’s easy when you spend a lot of the time on the internet to get caught in these microcycles and lose the ability to process time on a larger scale and to be fearful of the change that comes with it but its actually one of the greatest gifts we have and the sooner you embrace it the sooner you may reap its rewards <3

THE TIMES: The Formula One driver and his father, Steve, on failed driving tests and sleeping in horseboxes
George
My earliest memories are of living in a mobile home while my parents built a house in a field in the middle of nowhere, near Wisbech in Cambridgeshire. I rode a pedal tractor around the site, hurtling through corners and reversing with a trailer.
At 25 I am the youngest of three. Cara is 37 and works as my personal assistant. Benjy is 36 and caught the karting bug when he was just 11. He was a brilliant driver, becoming a national and world karting champion. Unfortunately, even starting at such a young age, it was already too late for him to have a professional career. I took up karting when I was six and he helped me a lot. Benjy was like a mentor. He eventually gave up racing at university, so Dad’s focus was on me.
I didn’t see much of Dad during the week. He got up early and came home late running a business selling seeds and pulses. As a kid you miss having your father around, but it’s only now that I appreciate he was doing it so I could race at the weekend. Dad didn’t come from a lot and did well to create a successful business. We weren’t poor but we weren’t wealthy like the families of some F1 racing drivers now.
After long hours at work Dad drove us in a camper van to racetracks around the country. It was very much a family affair. Dad was the mechanic, Mum did the cooking and collected data on my driving. When I drove well, there were celebrations and the mood was great but because everyone was so emotionally and financially invested, when I suffered a poor weekend the mood was bad.
Dad has always been hard on the ones he loves. As a young kid, that was difficult to deal with. The pressure didn’t just filter down to me, it affected the whole family. I felt the weight of failure and expectation. If I made a silly mistake and spun off the track, I can now understand why Dad might have thought, “What the hell am I doing this for?” He had to work his arse off to support my racing, so if I didn’t put in enough effort, it must have been hard.
I now live in the world of F1, where tens of millions of pounds are spoken about like peanuts. Even in Formula Two or Three, every driver has to find huge amounts of money to get on the grid — it’s just crazy. When I was 16 and moving up through the ranks, I realised Dad didn’t have that sort of capital. I thought, “Oh shit, if I can’t find that sort of sponsorship or get picked by a team, my F1 dream is gone.”
Winning the F2 championship in 2018 was a big moment but I’ll never forget the day I signed for Williams F1 in September 2018. I was racing in F2 in Sochi, Russia, when Claire Williams, the deputy team principal at the time, called me in and offered a deal. Mum and Dad were the first people I told and they both cried. I told them to save their tears for when I won a race.
I joined Mercedes for the 2022 season, alongside Lewis Hamilton. It was a huge opportunity for me to learn and grow in F1, as well as show what I’m capable of. It was not an easy season for Mercedes but I feel very fortunate to be in this position, plus Lewis is such an incredible bloke on and off the track. He is so experienced, whereas I’m a 25-year-old who is just totally focused on trying to be the best F1 driver I can be. I’m pretty inspired by what he has achieved.
Dad is a strong character but he has become more emotional since his children have left home. He’s also friendlier now and doesn’t mind making a fool of himself from time to time. My only regret is that F1 doesn’t leave much free space to see each other but we do speak on the phone all the time.
Of course he still watches the pennies and will only fly economy — he won’t let me pay for their flights either. I know my parents can afford to fly business but it’s the principle for them. I want to make sure I reach a position with my racing where I can afford to give them the best in their retirement. They totally deserve it.
Steve
The F1 guys are OK on the racetrack but they are never as good as their dads on normal roads. George is always telling me to slow down as we approach a junction, though his mum thinks it’s fantastic when he takes her out and drives quickly.
There was just one occasion when George didn’t put the full effort in and it caused quite a commotion. He failed his first driving test at 17 because he thought that being a great driver on the track was good enough. He came home fuming that the examiner was wrong. We had to go back to the test centre in King’s Lynn so George could confront him. That didn’t go down well.
George was a cheeky little boy, a bit of a comedian. I worked a lot but it’s strange that I can only remember the racing side of his life, not watching him grow up at home. We enjoyed a nice life but had to work hard for it. I came from a family of farm workers with very little money and wanted to get away from agriculture and better myself but I ended up owning a wholesale seed business.
My wife, Alison, and I knew George was going to be a racing driver at the age of two. He was born on the track, coming to races to watch his brother and help out in the garage. He had a toy tractor that he rode around the pit lane and collected stickers from each race to stick on his “George Russell Racing” tractor.
As George progressed through the racing ranks it became more and more expensive. We invested in a motorhome to travel to races — before that I would sometimes sleep in a freezing horsebox. There were sacrifices. Alison and I didn’t go on our first holiday together until two years ago, on a trip to Lanzarote. By then we had been together for 38 years. People think that now George is in F1 we hang out with Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff, the Mercedes principal, every weekend in the sunshine, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. Now Alison and I rarely go to races because we don’t want to interfere.
It was hard letting George fly the nest because we had been a close family, always doing our racing together. He is methodical and organised but his feet are firmly on the ground. There are plenty of people in the family to put him straight if needed.
There’s no magic wand to become an F1 driver — it takes hard work and dedication. It was only when I stood on the track with George before his first grand prix that I looked up at the enormous crowd and thought, “Oh my God, we’ve actually got here.”

2023 art summary + thoughts on my own art progress under the cut!!
(template by HedgeCatDragonix on deviantart)
so i've been doing this for 10 years :P
i'm not posting these pics in high quality, they're somewhere on the internet if you want to scavenge for a bit. i didn't start taking art seriously until late 2015 and i honestly don't like looking back at old drawings. i still like my 2022 art summary but it wasn't until this year that i'm proud of all my finished artworks.
my art journey is complicated. i'm not one of those artists who can say they've been drawing for all their lifes. i used to trace pokémon in my school agendas but that was it. around 2013, a couple of friends invited me to their Skype server where we used to draw each other's ocs and make art memes and stuff - it was fun and cringe in the most positive way i can say it :] i didn't know shit about art and i took pride in drawing on MS Paint with a mouse just because it was hard.
(all of my drawings until may 2018 were made with a mouse)
when i was 15 yo i got into Love Live! and i decided to get better at art because i didn't want lesbian fanart to be made only by creepy cishet men. at some point i watched this video from Sycra and it rewired my brain. i understood that i needed to actually practise and understand what i was doing, and that i wasn't going to improve just by observing. its follow-up video also helped me a lot, i remember watching it on the day it was posted jskhfdjdfd.
and so fast forward until 2021 approx. i spent all of those years practising drawing in my traditional sketchbooks, so my improvement was steady. the only problem, and in retrospective i see it as a Big Problem, is that i was grinding mindlessly. by that i mean that i copied artists i liked and i drew again and again stuff i was bad at, but i didn't think too deeply about it or analysed my own art to look for faster ways to improve it. i also don't take feedback well so i didn't ask for it either, which further slowed down my progress.
on top of it, that just made me better at drawing, not at illustration. i firmly believe that a good drawing is hard to ruin but i could have made my illustrations way more interesting if i had started going wild with colors and effects way earlier. i don't exactly regret my choices because at the end of the day it's just my hobby, and i've been praised for drawing a lot and for challenging myself to practise drawing traditionally, so i want this to be read as introspection rather than complaints!!
the reason why 2021 was a big change in my art is because in november i did this monstrosity:
i got an Android tablet to be able to draw in class and took the challenge alongside my friend Nico, who also did their own Huevember. hola si estás leyendo esto Nico, aunque lo dudo :) i can't say that any of the drawings made me better at anatomy, or composition, or colors. i can't say that they solidified my knowledge, either. but they planted a seed in my brain that would fully bloom in late 2022, which is the seed of hating the finished result of some pieces so much that i forced myself to improve.
everyone has their own motivation to get better at art and i've always thought that mine was a healthy one (i want to draw more lesbians, that's all). however, i've had a very solid 2023 and now i don't cringe at any of my pieces, plus i can notice any mistakes they have without wanting to delete them from existence - and i could only get there because at the end of 2022 i told myself i wouldn't make any more ugly illustrations. like, period. i didn't want to get anxious every time i had to look back on my own art.
i also learned that no ammount of compliments from others would magically make me like a piece i see as mid at best. of course, i appreciate every single nice comment i get (genuinely, i get very happy knowing that other people love my work), but gratitude doesn't fix a skill issue.
so, late 2022, many things happened. first i got cancelled on twitter over a drawing of my beloved mizuki from project sekai (this info will be relevant later). then i spent a whole month doing this other monstrosity that is to this day the best thing i've ever done. i haven't peaked it (yet):
this comic actually made me improve and solidify my skills. it wasn't a class assignment, or a collaboration, or anything more than a headcanon i shared with a friend - it was pure brainrot over Revue Starlight and it made me put all my cunt into it. this was also the point at which i started filling in blacks with the bucket tool instead of picking a very dark color, which is a big part of my current style :3
the thing about people cancelling me is that i had to distance myself from fandoms and eventually change accunts, which also affected how i perceived my own art. even if i draw for myself, at the end of the day i still draw characters that are loved by many people, so i disabled comments and stopped interacting with other artists of my fandom circles. that led me to go on hiatus at the start of 2023, knowing that it was time for a fresh start (my art accounts were 5 years old anyway).
that period of time made me think a lot about my finished pieces. since i wouldn't post them until i had a new account, i would stare at them for longer than ever or make small changes even if days had already passed. letting my mind rest from illustrations i had been working on and knowing i could change them whenever i wanted was a big step forward.
i realised that for the past years i had been in a hurry to post my drawings as soon as i was done with them instead of appreciating them. that was a turning point for my mindset. this was also past the time i decided to stop making ugly art, but i hadn't really taken any measures to get better. so i changed the wording of the challenge: i can make ugly art but i can't post it if i don't like it.
it doesn't sound epic, but for some reason it worked. every time i was in the middle of making a drawing that looked kind of ugly, i changed it until it looked right. not perfect, but good enough to avoid cringing in the future. some times i had to redraw it from scratch with a more interesting pose. some times i needed to add a background or a graphic element to make the characters pop. and somewhere on that period, i went wild with colors and effects, and a lot of times that saved a piece that would otherwise be boring.
i have to thank Revolutionary Girl Utena and Revue Starlight for making me experiment a lot during my hiatus. both pieces of media, one being the daugher of the other, give artists so many visual metaphors and interesting topics to work with. the revstar brainrot had been there since the junnana comic, but rgu was something i had been meaning to rewatch for a couple of years and it hit me like a fucking train. it also made me create one of the comics i'm the most proud about:
then i got into homestuck and my art got. well. stuck!! >D< but it was okay because i wasn't making ugly drawings anymore. i was putting into practise a lot of things i had been learning or experimenting with, especially regarding colors and character interactions. and the yuri was delicious hmmmmmmm.
the rest of 2023 was very linear in terms of art but not so much in terms of fandoms (?). which is fine, honestly, but i was also glad to get back into Fire Emblem: Three Houses in late that year because when i first got into it in 2019 i didn't have the skill to draw everything i wanted to draw. and i still haven't drawn all the yuri scenarios that i've been cooking in my mind, but i have until forever to do it!!
so for 2024 i want to study some stuff i feel i'm still lacking in. i think i've always had a good eye for composition, but i've never actually pushed it in my finished illustrations - they depend a lot on the poses because i've always been prioritising drawing over everything else. that needs to change this year.
i also want to get better at drawing characters from extreme angles. i've always felt like my poses are a bit flat and i think i can study photos taken with wide angle lenses to improve at that.
and of course i still want to draw faster, which is something i've always struggled with. i think i have a good rhythm of "producing" art (excuse me for the poor wording), but i'm still too slow for the kind of artstyle i want to achieve, which includes having a looser lineart and less details in irrelevant areas of the drawings. i think that overdoing the lineart actually hurts my illustrations, because everything ends up pulling the viewer's attention with the same energy. i also think messy artstyles are neat.
i promise i'm not crazy and i don't hate what i do. in fact, it's precisely because this year i managed to make some pieces with that kind of feel that i know where i want to aim. special mention to the junnana comic because i haven't been able to replicate that lineart ever since.
examples:
as for the stuff i like about my current artstyle, i definitely want to keep the way i color!! and by that i mean the method i have for applying filters that make my colors pop. i could maybe play more with textures too.
i also like the way i depict intimacy, and people have praised it too. thank you for noticing. it's the yearning that's doing it, not me. but i don't think i'll ever change the content (?) of my art, i eat breathe and speak in yuri. if anything, there are still some ways of conveying feelings that i haven't been able to draw because i lack the skill to do so, but i'll keep trying ;)
i honestly didn't expect this post to be this long. i've been writing for hours now and i'm not sure my thoughts are coherent for anyone that isn't me. i also can't grasp the idea that some people know me from fanart i did in 2016 while others started following me last month, time is wild and it's an extra dimension of complexity that i don't know how to account for when i write stuff like this.
but again, as i do with art, i've written this for myself. it's been nice to put my thoughts in order. i think i've only talked about art in depth with like 5 people and it's always been in casual conversation. no creo que estéis leyendo pero Nahia y Henar os amo y he aprendido mucho de vosotras.
thank you for reading until the end if you have. i hope you have not only a nice day but a nice year. let's meet again in the future.
