It is that time of year again, time for the birthday reflection.
We are getting real deep into 'not sure what I'm doing, cause I never thought I'd live this long' territory here lads. 'Don't compare yourself to other people, compare yourself to your former self', they say. Yeah, fair, in that case I'm doing extremely well, but unless I wear that shirt saying 'I used to be much worse', it does not help me much in social situations. (The kind where people ask with great concern exactly what it is that you do.)
I had more dissolving-friendship anguish than usual this year but I will say it felt like it was necessary to really assess my values and self-esteem, and create a space for change. I left my comfort zone, went to India twice and was rewarded with making a good friend (who never gets my postcards, idk if Taiwan Post sees "IND-" and sends them all straight to Indonesia, or if India Post is to blame here) , decided to put my Mandarin to the test by taking local community college courses (still doing okay in the second semester, the worst is the first day when the teacher asks with much trepidation whether I speak Chinese and I'm like otherwise I would not be here??). At some point I got used to doing visa runs and my quest for getting an ARC again went on the backburner, which I suppose is well enough because at this point I'm increasingly interested in obtaining dual citizenship (given the situation in the US for trans people), and the barriers are lower elsewhere.
I saw an illustration once that had a plant in a pot putting out leaves, captioned 'not moving, but growing', and I feel like I have been doing some stationary growing, but at some point one also outgrows the pot. On one hand I finally established a sort of livable routine and reasonable mental health status, amassed a plant collection (mostly from seeds + fruits), taken up the hobby of Postcrossing, and have been on HRT for 6 years now (yay), on the other I do not want to live on visa runs, take night classes and reside in a moldy shoebox apartment forever. (I am here because I was lazy about looking for housing but the hostel I was in was getting unbearable, so when my ex-friend was moving into the building and there was another room open, I decided to settle even though it did not meet the accommodation requirements I told myself I'd stand by. After all, it was only a 5 month rental contract. 3 years later, I suppose I've saved a lot of money on rent but at what cost... Hanging out in Singapore with my friend who has significantly higher standards (and budget) reignited my aspirations for more square footage, less mildew, and no scooters revving maniacally directly below my window, but can it defeat my foreshortened sense of future and tendency to catastrophise?). If I move somewhere more 'legit' shall we say, I will almost certainly need to sign a year contract, and hell if I know what I'm doing in the next six months even.
Of course I have this old unquenchable instinct down there which still says 'when in doubt, put everything in storage and go backpacking indefinitely! that'll fix you!' and I start to wonder if the brief-but-passionate escapist openness of the sort of people who frequent hostels might fill the social void with more instant gratification than slowly trying to find satisfying community amongst settled people, especially as a foreigner in an otherwise homogeneous society (where at first glance almost everyone assumes you can't speak the language). Do I need to leave in order to realise where I really want to be? Didn't I try that before, already? Is the real test this time whether I can dig in my heels and NOT uproot everything like a feral javelina?
Whatever I end up doing with this year of my life, I suppose it'll be interesting.
#last year i wrote somewhat mysteriously that i had two solid goals to work on#and while i can make an educated guess i am not 100% sure what i was talking about#thus i may hazard to say said goals were probably not achieved

Tubby Graffiti
What is tubby graffiti?
If you found this page, you may have searched for 'tubby graffiti 'tubby1 graffiti', and wondered about my tag or sticker. I created this page to show up on Google so there is less misinformation about me, and write more about the purpose of my tag.
I am a graffiti writer/urban explorer from Sydney, Australia. I primarily enjoy painting in 'hidden spots', like drainage tunnels and under bridges.
I got arrested several times within the span of a year or 2 for various charges of vandalism and trespassing. The last time I got arrested in Australia for vandalism, I was sentenced to do community service and I really didn't feel like doing much more graffiti in Sydney, because I kept getting caught.
But as it turns out, I am extremely thankful for the day I was arrested, because that day changed the course of my life forever.
My friend invited me to travel overseas with him, and I ended up travelling some of Asia and Europe with him. I didn't paint graffiti on these first trips or go anywhere off the beaten path, I just put up stickers and just enjoyed living happy and free, and doing as regular people do in their early twenties.
Later on another friend invited me to travel to India. This was my first time travelling to a 'non-touristy' place, and the catalyst for what made me want to drop everything and see the world as so much happened in just a couple weeks, and it ended up with us forgoing our flight to the party destination of Goa and instead going hiking in the Himalayas for 5 days and living among gypsies.
While it was great fun, I also saw huge amounts of poverty and visited the slums. This is really the first time I really saw things like that first hand.
When I returned to Australia, I realized that normal life would never quite feel the same. After getting restless, I ended up selling my car, getting rid of most of my belongings, packing what I needed into a duffel bag and setting off to see the world and write graffiti.
It started off as just fun and games. Backpacking through Asia and Europe, staying in hostels, meeting other travellers, while also writing graffiti and just enjoying life.
As I travelled more, I started seeing more and more in the way of poverty, crime, economic disparity, etc...
When you are painting graffiti in a country which doesn't really have a graffiti scene, it often strikes up conversations or even altercations.
I would always talk to people and they would always ask me 'what is the purpose of the graffiti.' I didn't really have an answer, I just said it was a fat, happy character.
I would eventually start painting countries which are advised as 'do not travel' places, and painting graffiti in these countries would start getting increasingly dangerous, and I would see the effects of war, meet refugees, meet many people just trying to survive in atrocious living conditions.
It would begin to feel distasteful, me just being a tourist, going to these places of extreme poverty with terrible living conditions to write graffiti for a couple days and move on to the next place.
Sitting at 94 countries at last count, I still have not completed even half when it comes to the goal of 'visiting every country in the world'.
About half of the countries left are in the African continent.
I have analysed the list and possibility of visiting every country in the world, and a large portion of what I have left to visit are countries which are considered extremely dangerous/in war/very bad political situations.
At the moment I am not travelling due to real life catching up with me and having a child.
I do not intend to visit all 197 anywhere in the near future, but I do intend to spend a few more months when I can travel again and eventually write a book about the complex social-economic and geopolitical issues which face our world.
My graffiti doesn't really benefit anyone, and is relatively pointless. All my stickers and tags will fade or get painted over, and in a while it will be as if I was never there.
If there is one thing I wish to leave behind, I wish to write and spread awareness about the world issues I have seen first hand. I want to share my views and write about the good and bad I have seen. Unless you see the bad, you can't really appreciate the good.
I'm from Sydney, Australia, a place which consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in the world. I have a passport which allows me to travel to most countries without difficult visas/invitation letters. I come from a place of privilege which allows me to travel with ease.
No one chooses where they were born and I don't want to waste the advantage I was born with, so I will endeavour to write a book and tell the stories of what I've experienced and the things I've seen.

British lawyer Simone White has become the fifth tourist to have died in a suspected mass poisoning in Laos, south-east Asia.
The UK's Foreign Office confirmed the 28-year-old's death on Thursday, saying: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Laos, and we are in contact with the local authorities."
It comes after the family of 19-year-old Australian national Bianca Jones confirmed her death earlier on the same day.
Hours earlier, the US State Department told the media that an American man died in the tourist town of Vang Vieng.
Two Danish women, aged 19 and 20, also died last week in Laos, Danish authorities confirmed, declining to share more due to confidentiality concerns.
The deaths remain under police investigation, but news reports and testimonies online from other tourists suggest they may have consumed drinks laced with methanol, a deadly substance often found in bootleg alcohol.
Vang Vieng is a small, riverside town in central Laos and a hub for young Westerners backpacking across Southeast Asia. It's home to the Banana Pancake Trail - a popular backpacking route spanning Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
Jones's friend Holly Bowles is in hospital on life support, while a British woman is also reportedly in hospital.
New Zealand's foreign ministry told local media on Thursday that one of its citizens was also unwell from suspected methanol poisoning. And the Netherlands' foreign affairs ministry said that a Dutch tourist was sent to the hospital but is in stable condition. It is unclear how many others have fallen ill.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the department of foreign affairs had confirmed Jones's death.
"Our first thoughts in this moment are with her family and friends who are grieving a terrible and cruel loss," Albanese said on Thursday afternoon.
"This is every parent's very worst fear and a nightmare that no one should have to endure."
He said he hoped Ms Bowles, who is currently at Bangkok Hospital, would recover well.
The US State Department said it was "closely monitoring" the situation with regards to the American victim, adding that it was up to local authorities to determine the cause of death.
Australian, New Zealand and UK authorities have each warned their citizens to be careful of methanol poisoning when consuming alcohol in Laos.
Nana Backpacker Hostel, where the two Australian women stayed in Vang Vieng, told the BBC that it was closed for police investigation.
The hostel’s manager told the Associated Press that the two women were among more than 100 guests who received free shots of Lao vodka from the hostel. The pair then headed out for the night, he said, adding that no other guests reported health issues.
The manager said he hoped the investigation would clear the hostel’s name, but said they have stopped giving free shots for now.
In a statement to Australian newspaper the Herald Sun, Jones’s family expressed their "deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support, love, and prayers we’ve received from across Australia".
"We kindly ask for privacy as we navigate through our grief and begin to heal," the statement said.
Unlike ethanol, the key component of alcoholic beverages, methanol is toxic to humans. Bootleg liquor producers sometimes add it to their drinks, however, as a cheap way to increase alcohol content.
Earlier this year, at least 57 people in India died after consuming methanol-laced liquor. Similar cases of mass poisoning have also been reported across the world, from the Philippines to Peru. It has hospitalised and even killed dozens in Indonesia over the years, but it has rarely affected tourists.

Solo doesn’t have to mean expensive. Here’s how to manage your money smartly:
Transport: Use trains and buses to save cost. Stay: Hostels are not only budget-friendly but also social. Food: Eat at local restaurants or dhabas. Extras: Set a daily spending limit and stick to it.
On average, a 3-day solo trip in India can cost anywhere between ₹3,000 to ₹7,000 depending on where you go.

Andaman Islands: Where Time Drifts With the Tide
There is a place, far from the dust of highways and the weight of concrete cities, where the Earth still hums an ancient lullaby. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands—an emerald whisper in the Bay of Bengal—invite not the hasty tourist but the slow traveler, the storyteller, the soul-seeker. To walk its shores is not just to journey through a destination but to drift across centuries of myth, mariner tales, and the sea’s eternal wisdom.
Arrival: A Whisper, Not a Roar
As you fly into Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman Islands, you're greeted not by skyscrapers but by clouds drifting low over dense canopies. The air feels older here—wiser, more deliberate. This is not a place that yields easily to itineraries. It asks you to listen, to observe, to be still.
For those backpacking in the Andaman Islands, the experience begins at the grassroots—guesthouses run by local families, roadside tea stalls where strangers share monsoon memories, and coastal trails that meander like forgotten verses. The simplicity of the journey adds texture to your tale. With just a rucksack and a sense of wonder, the archipelago opens up like a seashell cupped in the palm of the world.
History Carved in Stone and Storm
But don’t mistake Andaman’s stillness for silence. This land carries weight. It was here that the British built the dreaded Cellular Jail, once known as "Kala Pani"—a prison so remote that it swallowed the voices of India's freedom fighters. The thick stone walls don’t echo with cries anymore, but stand stoic in memory, their silence louder than screams.
Wander through its corridors at dusk, when the last of the golden light filters through the narrow windows, and you might sense it: the past never really leaves us. It lingers like the scent of the ocean on your clothes.
Island Hopping: In Search of Lost Time
Each island in the Andaman chain sings its own song. Havelock (now Swaraj Dweep) is perhaps the most celebrated, with its alabaster sands and azure tides. Backpackers often find themselves barefoot here, wandering along Radhanagar Beach, widely regarded as one of Asia’s finest, where the sunset feels less like an end and more like a deep breath.
Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep), by contrast, whispers rather than shouts. Here, travelers trade stories over banana-leaf plates of rice and curry, rent bicycles that creak with every turn, and marvel at coral reefs that seem too vivid to be real.
But to truly grasp the soul of the archipelago, venture beyond the charted spots. North Andaman, with its mangrove labyrinths and limestone caves, or the Nicobar Islands—still largely off-limits, cloaked in mystery—are reminders that exploration still lives in some corners of the Earth.
The Backpacker's Rhythm
Backpacking in Andaman Islands is a return to essential joys: salt in your hair, sand in your shoes, the taste of fruit plucked fresh from roadside stalls. It is the joy of choosing local over luxury, stories over selfies.
There are hostels and huts for the budget traveler, but also hammocks that overlook oceans and evenings lit by nothing but lanterns. Many backpackers find community here—other wanderers scribbling thoughts in tattered journals, musicians with salt-scratched guitars, and divers who speak of manta rays like old friends.
There are no strangers in Andaman—only stories waiting to be told.

A Culinary Compass: Where the Ocean is on Your Plate
No journey here is complete without a culinary pilgrimage. The best seafood restaurant in Andaman Islands is not always found on Google Maps. Sometimes, it’s a thatched-roof shack with no signage, where fish is grilled on an open flame and served with a side of sea breeze.
Yet, among the better-known names, Full Moon Café in Havelock often finds itself at the top. Its wooden interiors and beach-facing tables invite you to linger over platters of butter garlic lobster and coconut prawn curry. Or perhaps it's New Lighthouse Restaurant in Port Blair, famed for its crab masala and the feeling that the ocean has seasoned your meal itself.
Each dish, whether from a high-end bistro or a roadside stall, carries the island’s essence—unhurried, generous, unforgettable.
Of Coral Reefs and Inner Journeys
To dive here is to dream. Beneath the surface, the world rearranges itself—coral gardens bloom in colors your mind doesn’t know how to name, schools of fish shimmer like forgotten myths, and time, once again, ceases to matter.
For many, the underwater world is not just an activity but a revelation. You descend not just into the ocean, but into yourself.
Even non-divers find beauty in snorkeling at Elephant Beach, where the sea cradles you like a lullaby, and life below flows in quiet poetry.
The Soul of the Islands
What lingers when you leave Andaman is not just the photographs. It is the feeling that there is still a place on this Earth where nature moves to its own rhythm and invites you to do the same. That somewhere, the past is honored, not hurried. That seafood can taste like a story. That strangers can feel like old companions around bonfires lit on the beach. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are not just a destination; they are a reminder. That to travel is to return to slowness, to simplicity, and to the sea.
