i'm actually working on a tfp college au right now, so i'll share some of my ideas here:

optimus - out of town country boy who moved to iacon for his master's degree in engineering and works in the library to help pay his tuition

ratchet - med school student gunning to be a neurosurgeon once he graduates; one of optimus' friends from back home

arcee - bumblebee's best friend and a business major who also kicks ass on the track and field team (she's also in the gaming club but she won't tell anyone that)

cliffjumper - arcee's boyfriend and majoring in history; currently in rotc

bumblebee - sophomore getting his bachelor's in environmental science, sees optimus like a big brother; head of the robotics club

bulkhead - junior in architecture while also a wide receiver on the football team

smokescreen - freshman getting his degree in engineering, also on the basketball team; has tutoring sessions with optimus

wheeljack - bulkhead's long term boyfriend at a different college studying computer programming

megatron - political science major and captain of the debate team; no war in this au so he isn't evil, but his intensity can freak people out

starscream - out of town rich kid majoring in biochemistry with hopes to join the medical field (also has a FAT crush on optimus but that's just me)

soundwave - quiet kid and megatron's close friend majoring in communication; has dirt on literally everyone at that college

shockwave - psychology major and member of the robotics club; tends to scare the shit out of everyone but soundwave

knock out - starscream's insufferable roommate and also on the medicine track; annoys the hell out of ratchet

breakdown - knock out's bf and majoring in english (i always hc that he's not as dumb as he seems); on the football team and has a friendly rivalry with bulkhead

airachnid - majoring in physical therapy and on the track team; chronic mean girl who has a not so friendly rivalry with arcee

the truth about art history is that this field is very, very narrow and exists to study (High) Italian Renaissance art through a classically informed tradition OR modern French art or very controversially up until a few decades ago, NYC ab ex and pomo art. if you want to specialize in any other niche like, Cambodian architecture or medieval textile you just arent ever going to apply the foundational methodologies and theories art history was designed for. I've read scholarship that compared Lesotho womens flower mural houses to the boogie woogie painting because that's how limited the field is.

A lot of kids freshly out of a bachelor's degree have this idea that we need to reform art history to make it diverse and to add value onto overlooked (bad) art and to validate every person who has no base understanding of art and can barely deeply analyze a painting. there's this obsession with art history as a recovery vehicle to give a voice to dead minorities. But that's just, not what this field is. They really want to be social public historians and anthropologists, but aren't willing to let go of our title.

In fact, I know so many museologists and archeologists/anthropologists and contemporary visual art critics, a theater major, a forensic science BS, and in one case a straight up comparartive literature PhD in American slavery all misusing the title of art historian with at most 2 years of art historical training because it's better than their real field. and they ALL have this bizarre obsession with curatorial for no reason, again they're so desperate for a title, so that they can sound like something smart.

It's so funny because we can smell a desperate poseur from a mile away and we're somehow accused of snootiness over it. If you don't know shit about vasaris impact on the field I'm not calling you an art historian. you didn't write a thesis exerting the fullest extent of your visual culture training and knowledge on examining a black square for 67 pages to kiss your advisors ass so you haven't earned the title. Stolen valor like those civilian losers who walk around in army fatigues!!

i'm not sure if you have already answered a question like this... but this is a two parter so buckle up! i'm a high school senior (in the US) and i'm very uncertain about my future and need a nice big GOAL to push for. right now i think urban planning is it. i'm hoping your answers might clear some stuff up for me.

number 1- what got you into urban planning/urban design? was it something you saw in your community? at what age did you realize this? what kinds of things did you do when you were younger that you realize now could have indicated your future interest in this career path?

number 2- materials. do you have a list of literature, articles, resources, or creators that you like to go to for indulging personal interests in urban planning/design. this can include university assigned literature too ofc, i'm just wondering if you have any recs of materials to consume that could kind of point me in the right direction. (aka help me see if my current interest is real by seeing if i'm geniunely interested in literature on the subject of urban design)

hi pluto! no worries about the length, I have a science degree so I'm used to 2000 word papers ahaha (this is not to brag btw it was a pain in the ass the whole time I studied it, would only recommend if it's your jam)

so glad to hear you have a goal and I get that feeling! tbh when I look at the many multifaceted things I want to make a difference in, being able to do something that influences people's lives in such a fundamental and behind-the-scenes kind of way really keeps me going.

OKAY so the thing that got me into this was actually permaculture! when I was your age we did a geography unit on feeding the world while conserving the environment, and, for context, my high school also had what was basically an accelerated design program at the time (totally by accident, one dedicated teacher and my grade who were Very Into this kind of thing). basically, back to geography, where that unit landed was

and I was like! aha! design! see at this point, roughly 7 years ago, urban design wasn't that big of a field yet (most degrees in it have only popped up in the last decade or so) and so I thought a career in design at that point meant one of three options that didn't really appeal to me: architecture/ landscape architecture / interior design, industrial design/ engineering, or graphic design/animation. BUT!! on this day I was proven wrong!! because the definition in itself said design! and it was about being socially, economically and ecologically sustainable so I'd get to do Social Justice Things and Environment and Biology Things as well as use my knowledge of smallholder farming and business running from my side gig of breeding guinea fowls. At that point I knew what I wanted to do! I looked up permaculture degrees, and found nothing at a university level--which I knew I wanted to study because to understand the planet and our design needs, I thought I needed a lot more education.

Instead I applied to a bachelors of environmental science at several universities in Australia. The employment prospects were good, and I did biology in high school, and climate change was a Big Talking Point I thought I'd do well to understand a bit better. As well as ecology--living in Queensland at the time, it's one of the most rapid areas of land clearing. Urban design came later; for my fourth year I was required to do a year-long research project and write a thesis on it. There was a lot of emphasis on choosing something you know you can do for an entire year, and at this point I had three and a half years of backlogged ideas on how to make changes to our civilisations to be better for the environment, so I knew I wanted to do something that would allow me to express them in design. One of my capstone subjects was one on river catchments, and in it we studied something called water sensitive urban design. I arranged a crossover project between my lecturer for that subject and someone from the school of design at my university I later found out was the course coordinator of the master of urban design. She suggested this degree to me, and I enrolled--just at a different university to where I did my undergrad. tbh, it's everything I wanted at 17 when I wanted to design human scale civilisations that incorporate the principles of permaculture. I only wish working in the industry was more activism-led and less following a status quo that has historically been terrible for the environment and nonwhite people, and is making much too slow progress to remedy this.

PART 2: okay this will be a short one because I am that student who literally NEVER does any of their readings. I do them, eventually, at the end of my degree (like I did for environmental science) where I just save all the links and read through EVERYTHING for my entire degree at once. so I could not tell you what the good readings are. HOWEVER I want to push something: this field is NOT about reading. it is rooted in science, yes, but unlike something like biology it is a much more applied science. At its core, it is about problem-solving and innovation. It's about listening to your users. It's about holding their perspectives and their longings, and that of the land as well. It's about listening and creating. So I want to ask you these questions: 1) can you draw, whether on paper or digitally? Can you visualise things in your head and then translate that to a document? 2) can you collate several genres of information (planning law, ecology, social needs of MANY groups of people, stakeholder conditions, hydrology, the user experience, just to name a few) and use this to create a solution that covers all bases? and 3) can you listen to the land and the stories it tells, and would like to tell? Have you listened to you local Indigenous community about who they were before colonisation, how they feel now, and what they want to be? Are you ready to be the person who helps them see that vision? Are you ready to be the person who helps us see a vision of less traffic, of low carbon lifestyles, of being outdoors and meeting each other in peace?

I'll put up some links for reading sometime down the line when I hunt down where I saved them all to, but the reason I tend away from making this discipline too academic is because you're designing for the everyday person. You're not designing only for the small percentage who are capable of having academic conversations. You need to understand what someone on the street is saying behind their words, at least as much as you need to understand something some academic wrote in a paper or a book or even a council website. You're here to listen to the marginalised, listen to the need for connection of the wealthy who are hiding it behind accumulating things, and then have those perspectives in mind when you build up a collection of tools on how to make those needs a reality.

Percy: Education. I know that we usually hc as a Marin biology kinda guy but I genuinely think that he wouldn't be too fond of the workload but instead want to work towards being a teacher and being the kind of teacher he needed as a kid, y'know? Alternatively, I can see him being into something like baking and pastry art to take over Sally's shop.

Annabeth: Architecture. I really don't think I need to explain this one to y'all but yeah she's an architecture girly. But if we want to branch out I can also see her studying law and working in the area of Child Protection.

Leo: Astrophysics. I have this head canon of him panicking because of the sheer amount of choices that he's presented with and choosing the first one of the alphabetical list. Lucky for him, he's insanely good at it AND it'll pay well in the future. He minors in mechanical engineering and realises that although he has all the practical knowledge because of his father, his theoretical knowledge isn't as strong lol.

Piper: Food Science. I'm trying to be unique here because yeah, she could do environmental studies but I also think it would be super cool to see her learning about food and developing new vegetarian versions of food because it's something she's visibly passionate about in the books.

Nico: I can see him getting a history / philosophy related degree for his bachelors just for him to get a  doctor of philosophy (Ph. D.) in mythology or folklore. His hyperfixation runs deep and he sure as hell is going to fuel it as much as he can.

Jason: Doesn't go to college!! Is severely burnt out <3. No but like idk man I think he'd legitimately want to take it chill if that makes sense? Maybe he'd do a business major just so that he can get a job somewhere but I can't think of somewhere he'd fit in nicely. Jason does have a lot of part time jobs though!!

Frank: Nurse! Nursing school! Despite being the son of Mars I can see him being in the medical field because he wants to help people in need. It's a long journey with lots of ups and downs but finally getting his degree makes it all worth it.

Hazel: Geology because rocks. And also women in STEM!! This one directly correlates to her powers in the books as well as both of her parents! On the other hand, I can see definitely see Hazel studying in the field of archeology with the goal of being an archeologist and then eventually a museum curator :)

Reyna: Psychology!! Listen, I know this seems out of the blue but Reyna gives me the right vibes. Everyone is skeptical at first because they don't think she'd fit the mold of a clinical psychologist but that's okay because Reyna wants to further herself in research! She studies Neuropsychology and becomes a prominent researcher in her field! Please tell me you see the vision.

Will: From what I can see in the books, Emergency Medical Services degree seems like the right field for him. He's already basically a paramedic at Camp Half Blood so he knows it's naturally the right step for him. On the other hand, for something a little different - he seems like the kind of guy who might be interested in studying cinematography or art history maybe.

Travis: He studies Economics because he's so fucking convinced that he can become the next Elon Musk if he studies this. Alternatively, he studies music because he wants to travel the world and like sing with the wind and all that shit.

Connor: he's a communications major because he's a really popular youtube and technically doesn't really need to go to college but oh well he can study communications.

Drew: She goes to cosmetology school as the first step to start her own makeup and skincare empire. She's super nice to all of her clients and helps out all of the other students when they're having trouble with something! I will not tolerate any Drew slander let my girl breathe.

Pollux: Chemical Engineering. He got influenced by watching breaking bad and somehow landed himself a degree in chemical engineering. He doesn't know how he survived that degree but it doesn't matter because he decides to not give a fuck and open a coffee shop that becomes really popular because all the drinks are to die for.

Thalia: I don't really know the right terminology but she has an art related degree / tattoo apprentice so that she can work as a tattoo artist!! It fits with the thalis vision and also she is the eldest daughter who loses it lowkey so she doesn't follow your usual education route. Tattoo artist Thalia for the win!!

do you have any advice for someone going into writing their bachelor's thesis? I'm having trouble pinning down a topic that seems manageable.

Hello!

This will be highly field dependent, so my advice will be most relevant for social sciences and humanities - anyone from STEM, fell free to chip in as well!

Let's see, if a student came in at office hours and asked me this, I would probably break it down like this :

Get familiar with the expectations

A thesis the first big, semi-independent work you will have to conduct, so it's uncharted territory. Get rid of the anxiety by looking again, and again, and again, at any guidelines set by your course director, school, college. How long is it supposed to be ? Is there a set structure ? Is there a first draft due before the final draft ?

Look at dissertation from previous years! Ideally, find at least 3 so you can have an idea of how diverse the work can be.

2. Talk to your supervisor

And don't bullshit your way into impressing them. If you are absolutely lost - tell them. If you already have an idea - tell them. If you hesitate before three topics - tell them. That first meeting is where you lay down all the ground work. In all likelihood your supervisor barely knows you, so give them something to work with !They want you to do well!

3. Start broad, then narrow it down, narrow it down, narrow it down

"Pinning down a topic" is an iterative process, but the good part is that it's also an introspective one, in my opinion. It's the art of peeling back layers to figure out what, EXACTLY, is it that you want to know.

For example: let's say you want to broadly talk about accessibility in higher education. Ok, great ! But what exactly, is it that makes it interesting to you ? Have a sit down with yourself. Are you wondering how higher education defines disability ? Or is it about how disability impacts entrance into higher education ? Or specifically access to teaching resources ? It could be about the architecture and physical design of campus spaces, or it could be about the lived experience of disabled students ?

Some of these you will not be that interested in, some of them you are interested in but not in an "academic" sense, ... so you can start to narrow it down. Some you may already have a vague answer in your mind, so then you play the three year old toddler with your self, by asking "but why", "but why" until you feel like you have reached the real crux of the issue.

Throughout this process, you can 1) take peaks are the relevant literature to help you move the thought process along and 2) talk with your supervisor so they can steer you in a productive direction.

4. You are looking for a Good Bachelors Dissertation Now (TM).

Broadly this is what you want to keep in mind :

A good bachelors dissertation for you, with this supervisor is not a good PhD dissertation, not a dissertation that would be great with another supervisor, not a dissertation that doesn't fit your degree... It is good in its context, and that context is :

you + your supervisor + now

Don't feel disappointed or frustrated if you are steered in a slightly different direction - it may be one where your supervisor can actually help you better. Or if you are asked to downscale or scope down: better a narrower dissertation where all is properly covered than a too ambitious one that you will not able to carry out properly give the limits of the format.

Hakim, not surprisingly, would major in Arts or Architecture. Maybe both. I also considered civil engineering but my boy would hate it lol

Aryan is a technology boy so Computer Science for sure! Isaar, on the other hand, would take Physics! I think he'd master something where he could work as a researcher 😊

Please don't laugh but Kazumi is majoring in Psychology! :(( It isn't like he wants to work as a therapist or something like that. He just finds mind studies fascinating ♡ ♡ Kiyomi certainly would have a degree in Fashion or even Journalism! Baby Haruki I'm pretty sure he's majoring in History, mastering Political and Social History, and eventually he'd start Law.

Eventual goal is probably law school, and I can really get any degree before that. Philosophy is good for that because you’re prepared for the LSAT, but also its philosophy. I’d do well but the headache would be constant. I’ve got really high averages generally unless something drastically goes wrong this year, and applications are due in a couple months. I’d be good at law (I took it as an elective last year, both midterm and final had a 98% average) but my average for anything is already pretty high (combined overall was like. 95% last year I believe? AP math brought me down but it was AP so it’s still not bad). I’d be fine with anything probably, I’m just really indecisive 😭

One more thing: this year I have physics, chemistry, biology, calculus, English, visual art, arts digital media (which is just making the yearbook), English, and politics. Any degree I want I should have the prerequisite courses for, so that’s not a concern.

Phic Phight - We’re The Type To Be Pit Ballin’

Vlad loves balls. Danny loves balls. But most importantly, Maddie the cat loves balls.

Danny was always suspicious of Vlad, especially when Vlad gets a bunch of small boxes and one very large box. He didn’t pick up on any energy spikes in any of the guy's homes, so whatever it was it wasn’t electronic and didn’t use ectoplasm. Could it just be a new couch or bed? Sure. Danny wasn’t betting his half-life on that though.

Now if it was possible Danny would just waltz into the man’s house invisibly and check for anything; unfortunately, Vlad knew about his half-ghost ass and was also into anti-ghost tech. Meaning the house was protected from Danny abusing his powers like that, plus Vlad was a halfa himself and would thus sense Danny’s presence if he was in ghost form or using a decent amount of energy. So now here he is knocking on the door like a normal person (how boring) and being greeted by a slightly confused Vlad.

“Daniel?”, sticking his head out and looking around, “you’re here by yourself, so I doubt Jack made you come”, then frowning a little, “I will be very unhappy if you’re about to tell me there’s a major ghost issue”.

Danny shoves his way in, Vlad letting him with a quirked eyebrow as Danny looks around, “so what massive boxed thing did you buy”.

“You watching my mail like that could qualify as stalking behaviour, you know”.

“You put spy cameras in my house, you are not winning that argument”. Danny pausing in spot a few rooms over and just kind of staring, there’s a fucking ball pit and it’s actually filled with ball pit balls, not something weird or evilish. “Why… why do you have a ball pit”. It’s basically wall to wall, no wonder the box was goddamn huge.

Vlad walks in, crossing his arms, “Maddie was getting bored with most of her toys, so I thought I’d spice things up and splurge a little”.

Danny makes a few faces, “a ‘little’? You turned an entire room into a shallow ball pit for your cat. You have been too rich for too long”, wagging a finger in Vlad’s face, “you need to be homeless for a while, by the Ancients”. Looking back to the ball pit because come on! How much would something like this even cost? Even all the multi-coloured balls alone would be more than most peoples pay cheques. He means, sure he’s glad the guys actually pampering his cat like any halfway decent pet owner should but this might be overboard. “Your cat is spoiled”.

Vlad rolls his eyes, looking up to the ceiling, “I was also thinking of making steps for the walls and pathways up by the ceiling, little more space to run around and climb, you know”.

Danny looks up too, “Vlad… how fucking tall are your ceilings? What if she falls?”. Even if a cat fell into a shallow ball pit that would probably hurt.

Vlad pales a little, oh right, “you may have a point there”. This was a mansion after all. “Maybe just tunnels through the walls then”.

“Do you know what walls are load bearing? Do you want an upper floor to collapse down?”.

Vlad blinks, “since when did you know so much about architecture?”.

“It was one of the choices for side credits for that bachelor's degree I kinda wanna get”.

Vlad blinks and grins, “Oh, in biological science and engineering right? So you can get that master's to try getting into the Astronaut Candidate Program?”. At least his nephew-should-be-son-though was actually intelligent.

Danny grins right back, “yup, I’ve already got all my logged pilot-in-command hours”.

“I’d say congrats but I’m not sure Maddie and Jack’s jet counts”.

Danny points aggressively at him, “fuck that noise, I will make that count one way or another. Also, I have actually flown a real spaceship before even if I can’t actually prove that and it was trying to eat me beforehand”. And then Maddie the cat jumps up out of the ball pit and dives back in, popping her head up and meowing loudly at the two. Danny blinks, “was she sleeping in there?”.

Vlad looks incredibly smug, because he is smug, “indeed. I think it’s a winner”; then eyeing Danny watching the ball pit with a small little smile on his face.

Maddie the cat starts swimming around in the balls, the plunking and plinking the balls all make was rather adorable in Danny’s opinion, and what kind of loser doesn’t like a good ball pit. Ah, fuck it. “Fuck it”, Danny dives in; making Vlad jerk a little and reach out for him belatedly. Unfortunately, Danny sticks his head out of the pit with a, “I think I broke my neck actually”.

Vlad drops his hand and shakes his head, “for Gouda's sake, Daniel. Why didn’t you just step in?”.

“Oh where’s the fun in that?”. Eh, Danny thinks his neck’s healed enough, flipping over and starting to crawl around in the balls; occasionally flinging some in the air, which Maddie the cat frequently jumps out to catch or bat at.

Vlad sits down on the ball pit ledge, folding his hands together in his lap. He absolutely liked these sorts of little moments, where it felt like he could genuinely be family to Daniel. Watching Daniel bite a ball into his mouth and ‘popping’ it out. Maybe when the boy’s older and more mature…

Danny was very much in favour of this, it wasn’t evil, it didn’t involve his mom, and it was very fun. Ball pits were awesome… so long as no one pissed in it anyways. Vlad just rolls his eyes and leans out of the way when Danny throws a ball at him, but Maddie the cat absolutely losses her shit chasing after it like a bat outta hell and skidding around on the floor as she scammers her legs a bit faster than gravity is letting her actual move. The cat is smacking the runaway ball all over the floor and Danny can’t help laughing at that, Vlad watching his cat go fondly.

The cat comes back after a bit, panting, and lays on Vlad’s lap, him eyeing Danny as he pets her, “are you going to get out of there”.

Only half of Danny’s face is out as he hisses, “never”, and slowly sinks beneath the balls; time to slip away sneakily. Maybe Vlad will think he drowned in balls and panic. Heh.

Vlad eyes the balls and when Daniel doesn’t come back up and none of the balls move, “Daniel? Really?”.

A couple of seconds later the balls start moving again and Danny’s head slowly pokes up, looking petulant, “you added ghost shields underground?”.

Vlad smirks, “absolutely”.

Danny grumbles, actually standing up and walking out of the room making ‘I’m watching you’ gestures. Danny keeps glaring behind himself the entire way out of the mansion. Fuck… that was totally a family bonding moment, wasn’t it? Damn him. All his get a cat mocking was both working and backfiring. Ah well, it’s definitely still good he says; based on the sound of ball pit balls moving around it definitely was. There is nothing in this world that could convince Danny the Vlad didn’t just go into the ball pit. Nothing.

Well shit. Ok, longish gab.

Timeline accelerated.

I'm old, retired and changing fields. Back in school for Landscape Architecture at the local community college. The goal is to get into the field of urban forestry, and hopefully work with/for cities or a city to help plant trees to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Recently, finally, got all of my previous credits transferred from other schools. I didn't know there was a "fast track" program that allows me to skip some required classes since I already have a Bachelors degree (General Studies, one class short of three different majors: Geology Russian and Arabic).

I had already chosen my classes for this semester: three required classes and one 'fun' but useful class: Intro to Drone Technology. This gets you the FAA Part 107 Certificate, which allows you to fly drones for commercial purposes. This is apparently a good resume point, since more and more companies/agencies are using drones to do landscape evaluation and modeling.

So after getting my credits transferred, I realized I only have to take one class in Spring to graduate, ironically enough Intro to Landscape Architecture. Ooh great. But I was playing Final Fantasy XIV Online with my sister last night, chatting on the family Discord channel as we saved Aorzea. I was explaining basically all of the above, and my sister, ever practical, asked the following earth-shaking question:

Why don't you take that last course this semester? And graduate in December?

Well.. shit.

I can add it. It fits in my schedule. But that would bring me up to 15 credits. Pretty much overload. So I think I have to drop the drone class. The one I'm taking with all my young school friends, and the majority of the Super Science club. (All of the various science clubs on campus combined into one during covid, and haven't diversified yet).

So I have to decide, do I take the drone class and go insane with work? Or drop and still have a full semester and graduate in December? Or be completely calm, spread things out between this semester and next, and have an easy time of it and get a part-time job?

Sorry, thinking out loud. Or thinking with my keyboard.

I think I'm going to drop Drones, much as I'd like to spend time with my friends in a fun class. I have class later today and I'll go early and discuss it with the professor.

I first walked in 2013 with my bachelors in architecture. Following it was a year of doing the architecture doctorate program before realizing this wasn't for me and dropping everything for a new major. Nearly starting all over again.

So many things happened between then and now.

Tomorrow, I will be walking a second time for my Master's in plant science with two bachelor's under my belt (I opt out to walk for the second one).

I'm tired, hurt, and every emotion except the positive ones. But I'm still trying, okay?
