got this a few days ago but was in academic paper hell, so i'm sorry for the delay! thanks for the tag, @clandestinegardenias and @sunlaire!

do you make your bed? i definitely should, and i absolutely do not lol

what's your favorite number? i've had a personal fondness for 13 ever since i was a kid, but i also really enjoy the number 117. for nerd reasons

what is my job? that's. a moving target tbh. during the school year, i worked as a TA at my university, while working weekends at a coffee shop as a baker. now that it's summer, i'm going to have to get a second job, but the jury's still out on what that's going to be.

if you could go back to school would you? i am currently in school, and i'm hoping to get a PhD, so i don't think i'll be going back to school right now, lol. but in a hypothetical future, just to do whatever? absolutely. i would get another bachelors in neuroscience or some other field of biology, probably for medical research.

can you parallel park? absolutely. but i fuckin hate it, lol, and being on the road makes me nervous, so i avoid it at all costs. but i can do it

a job you had that would surprise people? dunno if i have anything in my history that has been surprising. i guess the lab technician one is kind of the outlier.

do you think aliens are real? yeah, but it's probably microbial life of some sort.

can you drive a manual car? i learned the basics, but all i can really do is drive in circles in a parking lot in second gear. my mom tried to get me to drive it on the road and i got scared, lol, so i never fully learned how to do it.

what's your guilty pleasure? honestly it's TV from the 70s. begrudgingly i have to admit i like CHiPs. Emergency! is a non-guilty pleasure, though. love that one with my whole heart. but a lot of older stuff has some... pretty not great politics involved, but i still really enjoy them. also have to admit that i really like those terrible Dan Brown movie adaptations, lol

tattoos? i want at least 3 and have plans, but i haven't found an artist yet to get them. but i don't have any as of yet.

favorite color? tbh it depends on my mood. the goth in me says that it's a deep burgundy or a velvety black, but really deep greens or very vivid sky blue is also very good. saturated jewel tones as a color class are my jam, i guess.

favorite type of music? this is a cruel question to ask me. i have so many. i've been on a real rammstein/alt metal/nu-metal kick lately, but i also really go for folk, hard rock, prog rock, and 1980s new wave music. but i'll listen to just about anything. if i'm going for orchestral music, i have to say minimalism all the way. i adore the work of philip glass and arvo part

do you like puzzles? absolutely, in any form. jigsaw puzzles are really soothing and engaging, but i also adore puzzle games. i've revisited the Portal franchise lately, and i have a game series called The Room (not the movie...) that's only a series of puzzles. they can be frustrating, but i adore them

any phobias? i am a deeply anxious person, but i am petrified of fire. it's kind of unreasonable. bugs and germs also make me lock up really hard, too, even though i can rationalize my way through them. but all of them freak me out really badly.

favorite childhood sport? oh it was definitely competitive swimming. soccer was really really fun, but i miss being on the swim team. though i did like 5 sports growing up and truly would just love to have joints that would let me do any of them again

do you talk to yourself? oh yeah. internal and external monologue, baby. my college friends got to be on a call yesterday and listen to me talk my way through editing papers, lol. i talk to myself while doing laundry, cleaning, just walking through the house or from my car to my place. truly, i never shut up

what movie(s) do you adore? there are a lot, honestly. Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, The Nice Guys, and For A Few Dollars More are probably the movies i've watched the most. also literally any Dan Bluth film. the animation is always so gorgeous

coffee or tea? definitely tea. i love herbal teas, but i can't do caffeine, so like. there are only so many things i can drink now, lol

first thing you wanted to be growing up? paleontologist. hands down. i wanted to be a paleontologist from age like 6 until 15 or 16. then i had to do a research project on what jobs are growing and found out there aren't many job openings. so i pivoted to music. and then music academia. lol. lmao (i say it cynically, but i genuinely love what i'm doing, it's just funny to me)

what's forensic science like? is it law and order

Um...no. I'd say it's more like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and all of its spinoffs. Or Forensic Files. Forensic Files is probably the best example of what forensic science is (you can find playlist of forensic file episodes on youtube)

So there are different areas of forensic science: forensic biology, forensic chemistry, forensic toxicology, forensic anthropology, forensic psychology, forensic investigative science, fire arms technicians, bomb experts, trace and evidence analysts, forensic odontology...etc. There are also death scene investigators and medical examiners and they're also considered forensic/criminal justice. Criminal profilers/profiling is also "technically" forensic science, but a lot of people in the forensic science world don't particularly like that phrase as there's no really science behind it.

Law and Order is more police and law, there's not that much forensics that goes into that show. CSI and its spin-offs are a more "glamorized" version of forensics, but they really focus a lot of forensic toxicology and forensic chemistry, which is not what my particular field is.

My bachelors is in forensic biology, which means that if I wanted to, I could work in a lab as a DNA analyst and determine if blood found at the scene belongs to either the victim or the perpetrator My masters is in forensic investigative science and what I want to do for my career is work either as a crime scene investigator or a death scene investigator. I don’t particularly want to work in a lab.

Forensics can also work to not only put people away, but to exonerate people, like with the Innocence Project. If someone thinks they've been wrongly accused, they can go to the Innocence Project and they have their own team of forensic scientist to go back over evidence and determine if the person is really innocent or not.

Many people think that forensic science tends to side with prosecution in court cases, which is true, but really, forensic science is neutral territory. We just look at the evidence/facts, even if it's not what people want to hear

Born: April 15, 1896

From: Great Barrington, Massachusetts

Occupation: Physician

Bio: Chinn was born in Great Barrington, MA.

Her father, William Lafayette, was the son of a plantation slave and owner; at the age 11, he escaped from this Virginia plantation.

Her mother, Lulu Ann, was the daughter of a slave and a Chickahominy Native American, who worked as the live-in cook at the Long Island mansion of the Tiffany family of jewelers.

The Tiffany family encouraged Chinn's interest in music.

Groaning up, she attended musical concerts in New York City and learned to play piano, accompanying the singer Paul Robertson in the early 1920's.

The Tiffany family also taught her the German and French language.

Chinn's mother who valued education, saved enough money from cooking to send Chinn to the Bordentown Manual and Training Industrial School, a New Jersey boarding school, until she contracted osteomyelitis of the jaw.

Chinn remained in New York City after her surgery there, but she was too poor to finish high school.

Despite her lack of diploma, she took the entrance examination to Columbia Teachers College and passed it, matriculating in 1917.

Chinn studied her first love, music, until a professor mocked her race as unfit for playing classical music.

At the same time, she received high praises for her scientific paper she wrote sewage disposal, so she changed her major to science.

In her senior year, she secured a full-time position as a lab technician in clinical pathology, so she completed her course work at night to graduate with a bachelor's degree in science in 1921.

She proceeded to study medicine at Bellevue Hospital Medical College, becoming it's first black woman graduate in 1926.

Rockefeller Institute was prepared to offer Chinn a research fellowship until it learned of her race.

Harlem Hospital was the only medical institution in the city that offered Chinn an internship.

Chinn was the first black woman to intern there and to accompany paramedics on ambulance calls, she confronted another obstacle when the hospital refused her practicing privileges there.

Chinn established a private practice instead, seeing patients in her office and performing procedures in their homes.

This experience prompted her to earn her master's degree in public health from Columbia University in 1933.

Upon graduation Chinn found that no hospital would allow her practice privileges.

With her fair skin and last name, many assumed that she was White or Chinese.

She later told Muriel Petioni, former president of the Society of Black Physicians, that the black workers snubbed her because they assumed she was passing as white and didn't want to jeopardize her position.

In 1940, Harlem Hospital granted Chinn admitting privileges, in part due to Mayor Florello La Guardia's push for integration in the wake of the Harlem riot of 1935.

In 1944, the Strang Clinic hired Chinn to conduct research on cancer, and she remained there for the next 29 years.

The Society of Surgical Oncology invited her to become a memeber, and in 1975, she established a society to promote black women to attend medical school.

She maintained her private practice until the age of 81.

While attending a reception at Columbia University in honor of a friend, Chinn collapsed and died on December 1, 1980.

May Chinn was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta.

In February 1921, Chinn was among the first group of women initiated into the Alpha Beta chapter of the sorority alongside Ms. Eslanda Good Robeson.

Trinity Health System School of Medical Laboratory Science Graduates 2024 Class

On Friday, June 28, 2024, the Trinity Health System School of Medical Laboratory Science graduated their fifth class, composed of Megan K. Baldy and Rachel E. Trolio. The graduation ceremony was held at Trinity West Chapel with a reception following in the private dining room. The THS MLS program runs for 11 months and is open to those who have a BS in Biology or a related field or who attend Youngstown State University and major in MLS. “This year's class was very dedicated to the program,” Constance L. Moore, M.Ed., MLS (ASCP)CM, Program Director, Trinity Health System School of Medical Laboratory Science, said. “They showed their enthusiasm for the profession by participating in presentations to local elementary, junior high, and high school students as well as manning a booth outside of the hospital cafeteria with games and prizes during National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week.” Baldy graduated from Franciscan University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology before coming into the program. Trolio is a Youngstown State University senior who obtained credits through the program to fulfill requirements for a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science. During the THS MLS program, students are exposed to every aspect of the clinical lab, including Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Immunology, Urinalysis, and Blood Bank, in both practicum and didactic instruction. The MLS program culminates with a certificate that allows the graduates to take a national certification exam through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). “I would love for the community to realize that hospital laboratories must employ quality, highly educated professionals, in order to ensure reliable patient results,” Moore said. While most patients see doctors, nurses, and other allied health professionals, including the phlebotomist who draws a patient's blood, medical laboratory scientists and technicians perform complex tests behind the scenes, both manually and on sophisticated instruments, from which doctors will base their decisions about diagnosis and treatment. “Our program at Trinity is essential to the education of these professionals,” Moore said. “And it is my hope that word will get out about the program so that more students will become interested in the medical laboratory science profession and opt to be interviewed for a spot in our future classes. Also, we hope to obtain more affiliation agreements with other universities, like the one we have with YSU.” The Trinity Health System School of Medical Laboratory Science program has been awarded an ASCP grant of $2500 for program resources and outreach projects that will be implemented to generate awareness of the program and the field of laboratory medicine. According to Moore, the THS MLS School has a 100 percent graduation rate, 100 percent employment rate, 91 percent pass rate for certification, and full accreditation by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
