Babylon, The Seat of Satan, and Rome

Babel, or Babylon, was built by Nimrod. Gen. 10:8-10. It was the seat of the first great Apostasy. Here the "Babylonian Cult" was invented. A system claiming to possess the highest wisdom and to reveal the divinest secrets. Before a member could be initiated he had to "confess" to the Priest. The Priest then had him in his power. This is the secret of the power of the Priests of the Roman Catholic Church today.

Once admitted into this order men were no longer Babylonians, Assyrians, or Egyptians, but members of a Mystical Brotherhood, over whom was placed a Pontiff or "High Priest," whose word was law. The city of Babylon continued to be the seat of Satan until the fall of the Babylonian and Medo-Persian Empires, when he shifted his Capital to Pergamos in Asia Minor, where it was in John's day. Rev. 2:12,13.

When Attains, the Pontiff and King of Pergamos, died in B. C. 133, he bequeathed the Headship of the "Babylonian Priesthood" to Rome. When the Etruscans came to Italy from Lydia (the region of Pergamos), they brought with them the Babylonian religion and rites. They set up a Pontiff who was head of the Priesthood. Later the Romans accepted this Pontiff as their civil ruler. Julius Caesar was made Pontiff of the Etruscan Order in B. C. 74. In B. C. 63 he was made "Supreme Pontiff" of the "Babylonian Order," thus becoming heir to the rights and titles of Attalus, Pontiff of Pergamos, who had made Rome his heir by will. Thus the first Roman Emperor became the Head of the "Babylonian Priesthood," and Rome the successor of Babylon. The Emperors of Rome continued to exercise the office of "Supreme Pontiff" until A. D. 376, when the Emperor Gratian, for Christian reasons, refused it. The Bishop of the Church at Rome, Damasus, was elected to the position. He had been Bishop 12 years, having been made Bishop in A. D. 366, through the influence of the monks of Mt. Carmel, a college of Babylonian religion originally founded by the priests of Jezebel. So in A. D. 378 the Head of the "Babylonian Order" became the Ruler of the "Roman Church." Thus Satan united Rome and Babylon In One Religious System.

Soon after Damasus was made "supreme Pontiff" the "rites" of Babylon began to come to the front. The worship of the Virgin Mary was set up in A. D. 381.

All the outstanding festivals of the Roman Catholic Church are of Babylonian origin. Easter is not a Christian name. It means "Ishtar," one of the titles of the Baby- Ionian Queen of Heaven, whose worship by the Children of Israel was such an abomination in the sight of God. The decree for the observance of Easter and Lent was given in A. D. 519. The "Rosary" is of Pagan origin. There is no warrant in the Word of God for the use of the "Sign of the Cross." ...and there is a lot more said but I want to go back to Damasus real quick. Not only was he the Pope from 366-384, and did all the above mentioned. He is also was the first to declare that Rome was started by Peter, thereby claiming Peter as the “founder” of the church (which is a complete lie and twist of scripture), and was the one that commissioned Jerome to “revise” the Latin translation of the Bible which became known as the Vulgate. To this day, NO ONE has seen the text that one man (Jerome) used to create the Vulgate.

"The Golden Scepter." From Esther 4: 9-11.

Our story, about a Babylonian god, Marduk and his friend, the goddess Esther who are trying to save Jewish people from a genocide in ancient times continues. At the core of the tale is the need for government, religion, and the people to stratify, to be as different as possible, so long as the foundation of the community precludes the need for rivalry.

Unity does not imply conformity, which never works. All the evil done in the eyes of the Lord towards Jews, gays, Muslims, black people, poor people has happened because of conflict between diversity and conformity. It is unsettling to think we missed out on this one in particular, I think the idea of foreign gods going to bat for the Jewish people is very cool, perhaps it is an omen for the Mashiach in some way.

The fate of the Jewish people in the Book of Esther depends on the ability of Esther to convince the King of Persia to wave his golden scepter. Staves, scepters, pillars, all of these pertain of course to the amazing powers of the penis. The scepter itself s mentioned in Chukat:

10 The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth "water skin". 11 Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim "beyond the crossing", in the wilderness that faces Moab "water of the father" toward the sunrise. 12 From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley "cooling" . 13 They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon "a ringing cry", which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. We touched on this a little before; greatness in a kingdom or its rulership does not come form the knife it comes from the scepter. Rulers who choose to be feared instead of loved will fear for their own lives for all time. Those who choose to be loved will receive some protection from their own people.

The scepter the gadag represents the decision to be great instead of fearsome. This decision must be made before the boy becomes a man and takes his place in the culture:

The noun מגדל (migdal) or מגדול (migdol) literally describes a place or agent for greatness. A tower could carry a fire and from it folks trumpeted signals. Towers drew its people from wherever they might roam. Over time they developed into central storage houses, banks and seats of government. Towers are buildings around which the greatness of a people forms and in which it becomes manifested."

We discussed Day 13 in a prior forum now we must define Day 30. Day 13 is when things go tilt, "enough is enough." Day 30=1102, יאאֶפֶסב‎‎, jaapesb, "a display of theophanic brilliance that inspires others."

"The verb יפע (yapa') means to shine or radiate and appears to be reserved for the radiant element of theophanic displays (Deuteronomy 33:2, Job 10:3, Psalm 50:1).

The noun בן (ben) means son and probably comes from the verb בנה (bana) meaning to build, such as a house. From בן (ben) in turn comes the word בת (bat), which means daughter. Linguistically unrelated but still striking is the word בית (bayit, or beth in constructs such as Bethel or Bethlehem), which means house. And equally unrelated but still striking is the verb בין (bin), literally meaning being able to see a difference; perceive or discern. A derivative of this verb is the substantive בין (ben), meaning between.

Another variation of the pre-Christian cross is for instance the ¨ankh¨ of the Egyptian Horus.

The Israelite ¨Shema¨ is the confession that God is one, and the mark of every true believers’ forehead. What then about the name Jesus?

Je Jesus is Latin, and is divided in two syllables. Je and Sus.

Je is pronounced the same same as Ge or Geo, and comes from Greek Ge, and Geo, which comes from Greek Ge, which means earth, ground or soil, as in ¨geography¨ both in Greek and Latin. (Webster seventh New Collegiate Dictionary)

Sus

Sus, or Suis simply means swine, hog or pig in Latin according to Latin-English-Latin Java Dictionary with Whitaker’s Wordlist.

Conclusion:

So Je-SUS translates to ¨earth pig¨, ¨earthly swine, or ¨the 1st and 2nd BEAST of the Earth.¨ They made Yeshua into chi, xi stigma 666, the image of dying, corruptible man, the abominable Babylonian tradition of sacrificing a pig to Ishtar/Easter.

The cross is bold display of the Vatican`s true pagan roots, namely human sacrifice, black magic, which they hide it in the open through cross symbolism.

The real meaning of the name Jesus portrays that the Babylonian Catholic Church, the Great Whore of Babylon (Rome sits on 7 mountains as the whore in Revelations) sees the easter-sacrifice as Jesus!

The cross pollutes the alter and renders the Temple of Yehovah (man) unfit for service or worship to Yehovah, causing the oblation (daily sacrifice) of the 2nd Temple to cease, e.g Jesus is the Antichrist. The cross is the biblical Abominable Sacrifice that Causes the Desolation of the Temple of Yehovah  , and the temple of the human body.

Easter is a day that is honoured by nearly all of contemporary Christianity and is used to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The queen told the worshippers that when Tammuz was killed by the wild pig, some of his blood fell on the stump of an evergreen tree, and the stump grew into a full new tree overnight. During this time, no meat was to be eaten.

Worshippers were to meditate upon the sacred mysteries of Baal and Tammuz, and to make the sign of the “T” in front of their hearts as they worshipped.

They also ate sacred cakes with the marking of a “T” or cross on the top, like our priests do, the oblate or sacrament, flesh of Christ.

Every year, on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox, a celebration was made.

It was Ishtar’s Sunday and was celebrated with rabbits and eggs.

Semiramis also proclaimed that because Tammuz was killed by a pig, that a pig must be eaten on that Sunday.

“Jesus” is the “Earthly Pig of Ishtar” this is why ham is eaten on Easter because a pig killed Semiramis son Tammuz, the god associated with Jesus in mystery religion and comparative mythology.

The priests of Ishtar impregnated the priestesses of Ishtar every Easter. The infants born from the previous Easters were called Ishtar-pigs and were sacrificed to Ishtar. What to conclude from this? We see that John warned us about Yeshua being made unto the image of pre-Christian Tammuz-myths. As a beast is an empire in biblical language: He warns us about Roman Catholicism, and the continuation of mystery-Babylon in the guise of Christianity. Did you really think 666 was some chip under the skin? That would be too easy to fall for!

Christians make Yeshua into something he wasn`t. Scripture is clear that Yeshua LEARNT to be free from sin.

During the days of Yeshua’s ’ earthly life, He offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence. Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from what He suffered, and having been made perfect, He became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him and was designated by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

¨Learned obedience. ¨ The Bible does not state that Yeshua was free from sin from the beginning. He was ¨God`s only son¨ in that he had the perfect astrological birthchart which we covered, and that he was the firstborn of the new covenant/Heavenly body. We also become like Yeshua: Sons of God under the new covenant, and Yeshua is more like the Muslims view him: A prophet, and not ¨God`s only son. ¨ That is a relative truth as God has no son in Judaism ok?

We are too easy to forget what Yeshua tells us after he says ¨I am the way, the truth, and the life. ¨ The continuation is as follows: Nobody comes to the father except through me.

Yeshua is the DOOR, and our eternal high-priest in Heaven.

The pagan cross is not to be worshipped. It is however clear from healing accounts, accounts of salvation, etc, that it has been observed in mercy of ignorance as a redemptive symbol, although being the thorn in Christianity. For in times past our most recent generations did not know this we on the other hand are the end days children of Gods wrath (lest we be reborn) whom are without excuse!

The first Christians did not use the symbol of the cross. They used the symbol of pisces – the symbol of the astrological age of the fish.

Is Jesus the second beast? Yes and no! Jesus is the first beast rising from the sea, the sea which symbol is Xi/the cross. The beasts are empires/military-powers. The military power goes to perdition: Not Jesus! And must be read in the intended context.

The second beast/false prophet of the first beast in Rev.13 is the pope that is also the little horn in Daniel 7:8. The Bible says the pope/Vatican was given power to breathe life into the image of the beast (the pictogram/cross) so that it could speak! And the number of (primarily in this context the Great Beast) is 666. We are told not to take this mark in Revelations 14:9-11. Do not worship the cross! Idols are forbidden in Judaism! John feared this, and encrypted a message that warns us of worshipping Christ crucified! Christ is RISEN not crucified! The original symbol for Christianity was the fish/pisces. Other symbols that could have been better than the cross is the Menorah (you don’t need to do this! ) , just as it would be more suitable for Israel to be flying the menorah on their flag, & not the star of remphan Worshipping a crucified man might lead to death-worship, and even necromancy, Satanism

Pascal’s wager is dumb because it assumes the only two possibilities are “no god” or “Christian god.” Here’s how you can hedge your bets on salvation much more confidently:

According to legends concerning Amitābha, he was so concerned with the plight of souls trapped in the cycle of reincarnation, he resolved to become a buddha so he could create a buddhakṣetra, a a paradisiacal realm beyond ordinary reality that souls could be reincarnated into in order to learn to escape the cycle of rebirth. Since his goal is to help souls escape saṃsāra that otherwise would be unable to, all you have to do to ensure reincarnation in Amitābha’s buddhakṣetra is to call upon his name ten times, with a sincere desire to be reborn there. I don’t know about you, but if Amitābha is real, I would sincerely wish to visit his buddhakṣetra, so this one is easy!

Keep the Noahide laws. Since only Jews are required to keep the commandments of Judaism, even if you fully believe in the Jewish religion, you do not have to keep all six hundred odd commandments if you are not a Jew. All you have to do is keep to a broader definition of good behavior. The Babylonian Talmud lists seven of these laws, and they’re basic things like don’t murder, don’t steal, don’t commit adultery, establish courts of law. Do that, and you’ll have a spot in HaOlam HaBa. Pretty standard if rather conservative stuff--definitely easier than converting to Judaism. How to interpret “not worshipping idols” is a bit trickier, since presumably this commandment is not “be irreligious,” or “be a Jew.” Perhaps it’s meant literally--do not worship statues, do not treat statues as gods? Or perhaps it’s an instruction about generally being monotheistic. But that’s fine, because we don’t need to worship Amitābha, or any other figure, in statue form or otherwise, to complete this list.

Other dharma-based traditions like Jainism and Hinduism have no afterlife as such, just a cycle of reincarnation. You will want to try to accumulate merit and avoid accumulating demerit, but even if you fuck it up, any resulting state or world you end up in will, at least, be temporary. Depending on how “merit” is defined, donating some money to a temple or monastic organization might help. Helpfully, this dovetails somewhat with Zoroastrianism, which requires good thoughts, words, and deeds of you, but not (as far as I know) actual belief in order to attain the House of Song once you cross Chinvat. No anal sex, though, because Angra Mainyu invented that; but N.B. the Noahide Laws require avoiding “sexual immortality,” and I suspect the Babylonian Talmud frowns on that, too.

Next, you’ll need to memorize the Qur’an, to become a hafiz or hafiza. This is admittedly a bit harder--the Qur’an is long--but there is a tradition of memorizing it that perhaps you can draw on for advice and support. Maybe a YouTube video or two. And at least some traditions of Islam maintain that if you memorize the Qur’an, you are guaranteed entry to Jannah. This opinion is not universally held, but all other possibilities of getting salvation under Islam are likely to be voided if you are not, or are a bad Muslim when you die. And you can’t simply recite the Shahada on your deathbed, because that’s when you’ll need to...

Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and get baptized as a Christian! Do not do this until you are actually, literally about to die. Try to time it, if possible, so that your unavoidable death happens immediately afterward. Baptism is a washing-away of sin and is valid only once; otherwise, most Christian traditions hold that the only way to be absolved of sin is to confess your sins (possibly to a priest, if Orthodox or Catholic), and if you die without confession or last rites, you’re hosed. And so, so many things are sins. You will fuck up, and that’s the point: in Christianity, we all suck ass, and you are almost always (but not quite) screwed. Christianity is by far the strictest one here; there are some Christian denominations that believe it’s only necessary to be baptized as a Christian, while others believe you must hold to their specific doctrines or you count as an unbeliever. Since there are too many of the latter to appease them all, we must content ourselves that if any of them are correct, we stood no chance, practically speaking, anyway; God just wanted to fuck with us on our way down. Some Christians, the universalist denominations, believe all are saved regardless, because God is indeed loving, and not a malicious bastard; fortunately, if they are correct, this whole list is superfluous! But we want to hedge our bets. If you’ve already been baptized, you’ll have to confess your sins and sincerely ask for absolution, which is a bit harder than just renouncing Satan and so forth, especially if you don’t regret all the anal sex Angra Mainyu tricked you into. If you don’t think you can manage a sincere repentance, there is one other escape clause--martyrdom. Dying for Jesus is a guaranteed one-way ticket to redemption, but hard to manage now that all the lion pits are closed. You could always try to proselytize to the Sentinelese, hand out Chick tracts in a rough neighborhood, or, if you’re really desperate, try the Circumcellion way--get a big stick and charge someone who’s armed yelling “Praise the Lord!” and hope they martyr you right then and there. But frankly. this is dubious at best and I don’t recommend it.

Eclecticism is Historically Accurate

It might sound like a hot take, but it's true! The Polytheist mind set of the ancient world  was very different than today.

I don't know if this is still the case, but growing up, especially in college, there was a schism between reconstructionist and eclectic practitioners. There was a lot of gatekeeping, a lot of shaming, and so on. I've had people who worship different pantheons try to correct me about my Gods! (Though that is a different issue in and of itself.) I'd like to think because I haven't personally encountered this in a while it is less prevalent, but I know that is just wishful thinking- so to any who may concern, here is the 'historical fact' on inter-pantheon worship in ancient times.

The simple fact of it was these cultures existed in the same space, merchants talked to each other, ideas were shared and spread. Above is a statue of Hermes-Anpu. This was a statue was the result of some Romans looking at Anpu after interacting with Egypt and going "Hey, he sure is a lot like Hermes! I guess in Egypt he presents to them as some jackal dude. Cool." This statue of the two god combined is proof of this parallel ancient people drew that has existed until today.

But that is an example of likening one god to another, and saying several gods are simply different aspects of each other is far more commonly accepted than say, being a Hellenistic pagan who also just happens to pray to Aset sometimes

Except that was a thing that actually happened in ancient Rome!

The Cult of Isis happened when rumors that Aset was 'very responsive' to prayers began spreading on the other side of the Mediterranean. Basically a few Romans who traveled south started going, "Man, when I was visiting Egypt I prayed to this local goddess and she like, immediately hooked me up! So I kept praying to her and life has been great! You should pray to her too!" Her popularity spread to the point there were temples of her in Rome. These people still worshiped their own Roman gods, they still held Jupiter above others, but that didn't prevent them from working with deities outside of this pantheon.

So in modern context, there's no reason why I, a Kemetic, shouldn't still occasionally work with Baldr or Dionysus because they have a stronger connection to the thing I'm working on. One might argue that, say, it's one thing for Egypt and Rome to have contact, but Egypt and Celtic practices? What about Babylonian? What if you with with some Shinto or something else from the far east? They wouldn't have had historical connections! Well no, but if they had the technology we do now? Of course they would have! The cross pollination of ideas is a good thing, not a bad one. A world untouched by the monotheistic mindset would have embraced this exchange of ideas, would never have had the concept of such rigid lines between religions.

So, as a polytheist, I encourage learning about and at the very least giving respect to other pantheons even if they are not my main focus. Maybe you'll make friends who work with that pantheon, learning more about the people around you should be encouraged, not be cause for divide. Personally, I feel the Old Gods are happy to embrace any form of appropriate worship, and wouldn't care so much about such rigidity. Granted, this may change from god to god, some deities are known to be possessive, others in great dislike of being worshiped in solitary. Once again, it is about finding what feels right.

MITHRAIC MYSTERIES

Category: Roman mystery cults

Despite the name of this series, I’ll take you for this post in a quite hot part of the world… Rome and before that Iran. If you look a bit for the “history of Christmas” around, you’ll often find references to how originally it was “Mithra’s birthday” stolen away by the Christians. Let’s dig a bit into that…

I) Who is Mithra?

Mithra was a god of Persia, in the old Zoroastrian religion – back in the land that is today Iran. Mithra was a Persian god with two main functions, a “natural” and “social” one. On his “natural” side, Mithra was a god of the sun and the light, protector of cattle and harvest, and guardian of the waters that made sure pastures were always moist enough. On his “social” side, Mithra was the god of justice, patron of oaths and covenants, all-seeing protector of truth and contracts. Constantly watchful, never sleeping, undeceivable and infallible, Mithra was also one of the “three judges of the Chinvat Bridge” (the “bridge of separation” that souls must cross to go to the land of the dead): alongside Rashnu the god of justice and Sraosha the god of obedience, Mithra of “truth” judged the souls to see if their goodness outweighed enough their badness to grant them passage. “Mithra of the Wild Pastures”, with “a thousand ears and a myriad eyes” originally started out as distinct from the sun (who was another god), but with time he slowly took over the role of the sun god (a change in characterization that is theorized to be due to the Persian contact with the Babylonians and the Greeks, resulting in Mithra being confused with other “judicial-sun-gods” like Shamash or Apollo).

Now all of that being said… We are not here to talk about the Persian Mithra. We are here to talk about the Roman version of the god (usually called “Mithras” to distinguish him from the original “Mithra”).  You see, as the Roman Empire grew very large and became very powerful, its contact with foreign countries led to a specific phenomenon: “mystery cults”. More precisely “exotic foreign mystery cults”. When the Romans discovered or conquered a new “border-nation”, what they started to do was “adopt” one specific deity of the country, and bring it back to Rome to worship it and have a cult around it. It wasn’t anything knew as Rome had, for centuries now, either absorbed the gods of those they conquered (the Greeks) or imposed their gods on conquered lands (Gaul) – but the novelty here was the idea of “mystery cult”. These deities brought back from the foreign lands were “Romanized”, but not made part of the official Roman religion. A mystery cult is a type of “private” worship that you can only participate in if you are initiated through specific rites – and they are called “mystery cults” because its members actually refuse to speak about their faith or reveal their rituals to anyone who is not initiated. This was the very opposite of the Roman religion, which was public and very open about everything and everyone. There were a LOT of “mystery cults” that popped up in Rome, it was truly the “new fad” so to speak. You had a mystery cult for Cybele, you had a mystery cult for Isis, you had cults of Serapis or Attis… And of course, as you can guess, when the Romans discovered Persia, there was also a mystery cult for Mithra that promptly popped up: the Cult of Mithras, or Mithraic Mysteries, or “Mysteries of the Persians” (today we can use the term Mithraism). Heck, in fact Christianity began its Roman career as just “another one of those exotic mystery cults”. Even more: the Cult of Mithra is believed to have been in the Roman Empire the true and serious rival of Christianity in its early times.

II) The cult of Mithras

Now, the Cult of Mithras being a “mystery religion”… well we don’t have a lot of info about it. Or rather we have a lot of info, but we don’t always know what it means, because they are just clues to an unsolved mystery, elements without contexts, nameless pictures.

We know that a very central element of the cult, depicted everywhere, was a scene depicting Mithras killing a bull. This “tauroctony” (bull-slaying) was truly unique to Rome – because again, the Roman Mithras was different in many ways from the Iranian Mithra. In every temple of Mithras you have a picture of the god, dressed in an Anatolian costume and wearing a Phrygian bonnet, kneeling over a “sacred bull”, holding him by the nostrils with his left hand, stabbing the beast with its right. Many other details can pop up in the scene: sometimes a dog and a snake will drink the blood of the bull ; other times a raven will be sitting on the bull or flying around ; you can see a scorpion attacking the genitals of the bull, or ears of wheat coming out of the bull’s tail. Usually the scene happens in some sort of cavern or grotto, with Mithras being assisted by two torch-bearers (one with his torch upward, the other with his torch downward) – and very often Mithras is seen looking back, above his shoulder, up to him (other depictions explicit that he is looking at the sun, or rather its divine form, Sol). In fact, sometimes the “bull-killing scene” is represented/depicted/sculpted with the circle of the Zodiac around it. It was traditional to put at the top-left corner of the “bull-slaying pictures” the god Sol with a fiery crown and riding a quadriga – not only is Mithras looking at him, but sometimes Sol even sends a ray of light towards him. Other times, it is rather Luna that will appear at the top-right corner riding a biga and crowned with a crescent moon.

The scene of the bull-slaying is constantly followed by a second scene: the “banquet” or the “feast” (to the point sometimes the picture of the feast was created right behind the killing scene so you just had to flip around one picture to have the other). This scene has Mithras feast alongside Sol Invictus (Sol the Unvanquished, the same Sol – sun god/sun personification) – it is clear that the meat they feast upon is the meat of the killed bull. The third most important Mithraic scene, usually depicted before the bull-slaying, is “Mithras’ birth”. Mithras is usually depicted being “born out of a rock”, emerging out of the rock as a young boy, with a dagger in one hand and a torch in the other – and while entirely nude, he is still wearing his Phrygian cap. This scene comes with numerous variations: in one fire appears out of Mithras’ rock and cap, in a second a fountain emerges from the base of the rock, in a third he rather holds bows and arrows, in a fourth his torch is replaced by lightning – and it was also very common to depict animals present around the birth, from dogs, serpents or eagles to snails, lobsters or crocodiles, passing by lions or dolphins. And when it isn’t animals that surround the birth, it is gods: in one depiction Oceanus, the sea-god, is present ; in another Mithras is surrounded by the gods of the four winds ; and in a fourth there is a quartet of gods identified as Sol, Luna, Saturn and Victoria (the goddess of victory).

There is one last important “image” part of the Mithraic cult that, unlike the other three, is still shrouded in mystery and unexplained to this day. A recurring figure of a lion-headed man, with a body naked but entwined by one or two snakes. He usually was depicted with four wings, an open-mouth, and holding in his hands two keys and a scepter: one statue had the symbols of the four seasons on his four wings, and a thunderbolt engraved on his chest. From inscriptions left around these statues and images we know that the name of this entity was “Arimanius”, and that he was a god of the Mithraic Cult, but we don’t know much more about him.

Now, what I described to you were the imagery and iconography of the cult. But what about its rites? Well… We know that to be initiated into the cult you were asked a series of specific ritual questions to which you had to answer with specific sentences – and by entering the cult you swore to be faithful to it and to never reveal its secrets. Around midsummer Mithraic cults held a big feast of meat and fruits (probably to celebrate the sun at its highest and most powerful). There was no “leader” or “higher authority” for this cult, no predominant temple – just a series of equal sanctuaries and temples (known as “mithraeum”), underground windowless temples. Usually these temples were a reproduction/recreation of the mythical cave in which Mithras had killed the bull – to the point that when people could bring natural rock, they imitated it with lath and plaster. Each temple was also close to a spring or stream as fresh waters were needed for Mithraic rituals.

We know that there were seven “degrees of initiation” within the Cult of Mithras, each one corresponding to a different planet and with its own symbols. At first you were a “Corax” (Corux, Corvex ; a raven or crow), holding a beaker and a caduceus, and associated with Mercury. Then you became a “Nymphus” (or Nymphobus, a “bridegroom”), wearing veil, circlets and diadems while holding a lamp and a hand bell, associated with Venus. The third rank was Miles, the Soldier, holding a lance and drum, while wearing a helmet, belt, pouch and breastplate, associated with Mars. The fourth rank was the Leo, the Lion, with laurel wreaths, holding battilum (an iron shovel), sistrum (a musical instrument) and thunderbolts, associated with Jupiter. The fifth rank, the Luna/Moon rank was Perses (Persian), with a Phrygian cap, a hooked sword, a sickle, a sling, a pouch, stars and a crescent moon. The sixth rank, the one of Sol/Sun, was Heliodromus (sun-runner), with robes, whips and torches, imitating Helios. The final and highest rank of the cult was Pater, the Father, associated with Saturn, with elaborate jewel-and-metal robes, a chasuble or cape, a patera (metallic libation bowl), garnet or ruby rings, and holding a mitre or shepherd staff.

To be admitted into a Mithraic cult you had to shake hand with the “pater” of your local cult – a reproduction of a mythical scene in which Sol and Mithras shake hands after the killing of the bull. In fact, to access each grade, some sort of “test” had to be done, usually an exposure to extreme heat, extreme cold or another form of peril. All of the members of the Mithraic cults were men, no women were allowed, and there was a LOT of soldiers among the cult. It makes sense as mystery cults usually always start within the Roman armies (who are the first ones exposed to the foreign cultures of the conquered or invaded lands), before making their way up to Rome – but Mithras mysteries are unusual in that they stayed a mostly martial cult, with the non-soldier member being merchants and minor bureaucrats. There was also a LOT of slaves or “freed-men” (slaves that were given back their freedom) in this cult, while very few aristocrats or politicians – though when there was upper-class people, they usually were found in the highest ranks, especially the “Pater” rank. Sometimes we know local cults had more than one “Pater”, and the name of “Father of Fathers” appeared also sometimes to hint at a supreme leader of a local Mithraic community.

III) A bit of history

The beginning of the Mithraic Mysteries are unclear. Earliest evidences place the beginning of this cult between the first century BCE and the first century CE – notably in the first century BCE we know that a “reverence” and “cult” of Mithras, fused with Apollo and Helios, had spread into Greek culture through Greco-Iranian realms, usually depicting Mithras as a beardless youth wearing a Persian tiara of Phrygian cap with Parthian clothes – but the earliest sculptures and engravings of the Mithraic Cult in the Roman Empire date from the 1st century CE. Temples of Mithras weren’t just in Rome per se, but also in other Roman cities such as Ostia, as well as important Roman colonies: Numidia in Northern Africa, Dalmatia above Greece, or Britain. The earliest literary reference to the cult are also date from the end of the first century. In Statius’ Thebaid, during a prayer to Phoebus (another name of Apollo) there is a description of Mithras fighting a horned-beast in a Persian cave ; Justin Martyr (an early Christian) accused the cult of Mithras of imitating the Christian communion in their rites ; Plutarch describes the Mithraic rites as having brought to Rome and Greece by the pirates of Cilicia (actual Turkey) in the first century BCE, Dio Cassius mentions that higher-ups of the Roman government under Nero did know and were part of the Mithraic cults…

We know that the apex of the Mithraic cults was between the second and third centuries, a time where the Cult grew in size and popularity enormously, in parallel to the cult of the Sol Invictus which read the official public Roman religion (the two cults seemingly being tied together or conflated). But by the 4th century Christianity (which from an obscure “foreign mystery cult” had reached the upper-class and political institutions of Rome was growing in power until it would become Rome’s new official state-religion) starts to harass and persecute the cult of Mithras, seen as rivals/copycats/pagans – and by the 5th century Mithraism was completely obliterated. It is theorized that the cult still survived in rural areas far away from cities during the 5th century ; but we know that Christians either destroyed themselves Mithraic sanctuaries, or actually built churches on top of them to bury them down.

To consider a bit more Mithraism relationship with Christianity. Early Christians were afraid and criticizing the Mithraic Cults precisely because of how eerily similar they were to their own religion, to the point that Christians interpreted the cult of Mithras as an evil copy and devilish mockery of their own rites. For example the Mithraic initiation began with the man taking a ritual bath, and at the end of the ceremony receiving a sacred mark on his forehead: very similar to Christian baptism. Initiates also seemingly performed the ritual consumption of bread and a cup of water, seen similar to the Christian Eucharist. Historians have noted that, had Christianity not become as powerful as it did back then, Mithraism could have been the actual next big religion and become Rome’s official imperial cult – effectively replacing Christianity in history.

Now, after this long history lesson: what is the tie with Christmas?

Well… One of the big celebrations of the Mithraic cult, beyond the midsummer feast, was the 25th of December, which was the “Mithraic New Year” and on which the Cult celebrated the birth of their god Mithras. Which is why many people point out that it is another similarity to Christianity, and that Christians might have imposed Christmas on this date to over-rid “Mithrasmas”.

Mind you, not everybody agrees with that. You see, some people point out that the 25th of December wasn’t a Mithraic celebration, but that it is a misinterpretation of another Roman holiday happening at this date: the Natalis Invicti, that the Mithraic reinterpreted under their own light, but that did not particularly “belong” to them.

The Natalis Invicti (or Festival of Dies Natalis Soli Invicti) was the day of a “birth festival” celebrating the god “Sol Invictus” (which as I said above was strongly associated and sometimes confused with Mithras) – and it was presumably this holiday that the Christians tried to “cover up” with their Christmas.

The Sol Invictus, or Unconquered Sun, was a deity of the Roman pantheon not exactly the same as previous solar gods – he was not exactly the same as the original Roman Sol, adapted from the Greek Helios, and sometimes known as “Sol Indiges” (the deified sun). Sol Invictus rather seemed to have been originally a Syrian god adopted by the Romans whose cult slowly replaced Sol Indiges’ cult over time. It should also be noted that “Invictus” was originally just an epithet of many Roman deities, such as Jupiter, Mars or Apollo – so the god might have been originally just an aspect of a Roman god that gained a life of its own ; and we also know that when the emperor August deified himself and got a cult to worship him as a god after his death, he was also often qualified of “soli invicto”, “the unconquered sun”). What we know is that the cult of the Syrian Sol Invictus was brought to Rome and established by Elagabalus when he was a teenager, and as an emperor he neglected Rome’s traditional deities to promote his own Sol Invictus god, which was equated with the previous purely Roman Sol god and Jupiter. Then it was the emperor Aurelian who, in his religious reforms, placed the Sol Invictus in a rank making him one of the most prominent and important deities of the empire – making its previously low-classed and low-ranked priesthood into a prestigious priesthood in which nobility could enroll. And later, Emperor Constantine decreed that the last day of the week would be “Dies Solis”, the Day of the Sun, the day tied to Sol Invictus: Sunday. Oh yes, and to clarify about why the 25th of December would be chosen for such a "festivity" celebration: in solar cults, the winter solstice (to which the 25th of December somehow corresponds) is usually seen as the moment where the "sun is reborn" or the "sun is birthed" because it is after this point that days start to get longer, that the cold season weakens and that the sun "returns" to the world.

Arwe, also known as Wainaba, in Ethiopian mythology, is a serpent-king who rules for four hundred years before being destroyed by the founder of the Solomonic dynasty. His story comes in a number of versions, all of which have him as a tyrannical rules who demands sacrifice. The myth is part of a wider tradition of serpent- or dragon-kings, such as the Babylonian dragon.

The veneration of Arwe, which was widespread, predates Christianity in Ethiopia,which became a state religion under Ezana of Axum in the early 4th century.Arwe ("wild beast" in Geʽez)is a snake-king who rules for four hundred years) over the land that is to become Ethiopia. He is a giant serpent ("No, Arwe is not beyond the hill, for the hill you see is Arwe") to whom humans must sacrifice their virgin daughters and cattle to calm his endless hunger. He reigns with terror until he is defeated by a man who becomes the next ruler of the land, and his daughter becomes the Queen of Sheba, and then the mother of Menelik I.

It is believed by some Ethiopians that Arwe, or Wainaba, ruled after Aksumawi, who is the great-grandson of Noah and son of Itiopis according to the Book of Aksum. Ethiopis, who was seventh in the ancestral lines, is also believed to be the twelfth direct descendant of Adam

In one version of Arwe's myth, a stranger comes to the land where Arwe reigns and after seeing a woman cry over the fact that she has to give her daughter in sacrifice to the serpent, the man offers to kill the serpent. He requests the woman to provide him with a spotless white lamb and a bowl with juice from the poisonous Euphorbia tree. He faces the serpent and offers him the lamb and the juice, which Arwe accepts not knowing it will be the cause of his death. After Arwe is finally defeated, the people offer the man to become their ruler, a position he gladly accepts until he is ready to let his daughter Makeda reign. She becomes the Queen of Sheba, and its capital city is Axum. In another version of this myth, Wainaba, the serpent ruler, is on his way traveling north from the district Tamben to Aksum when a man called Angabo promises the Aksumites to kill the serpent in exchange for the throne. He applied various forms of magic to the road the serpent traveled on, including an iron instrument that the buried under the road. He attacked Wainaba with fire, and burns him to death. Legend has it he was buried in May Wayno, where his grave still is

The serpent and the saints

Some versions of the myth clearly combine pre-Christian and Christian elements, in order to make Christianity (specifically the Nine Saints) victorious over a pagan monster. One of these is found among tribes in the north and published by Enno Littmann in 1904: the Tigre people worship a dragon; families sacrifice their oldest daughter as well as mead and milk. When it's the turn of Eteye Azeb ("Queen of the South"), a family's oldest child, she is tied to a tree for the dragon to take, but seven saints sit down in the tree's shade. They wonder if she's Mary but she explains she is a human, to be sacrificed. When the dragon comes, two of the saints hesitate but the third, Abba Mentelit, attacks him and then all seven kill the dragon with a cross. Some blood from the dragon lands on the girl's heel, which becomes like the heel of an ass. When she returns to her village, her people send her away because they think she ran away, but the next day she shows them the body, whereupon they make her the leader of the village, and she has a maiden appointed as her second. Her deformity is cured when she visits Solomon with her second, both disguised as men. He tricks them both, and has sex with them; her son is Menelek. This version was written down in 1902, and had been retold by a Tigre man from a village north of Keren, Eritrea.

Littmann notes the ubiquity of the dragon in various mythologies of (what he then called) the Semitic peoples, including that of the Babylonian dragon, and especially among the people of Ethiopia.Many Ethiopic sources place "King Arwe" at the beginning of history.The Tigre variant, with its seven saints (originally they were the nine saints who missionized in Ethiopia in the 5th century), thus add a Christian turn to a pre-Christian tradition, and the Christian saints deliver the world from a great evil. Littmann identifies the saint Mentelit with Abba Pantelewon.Other instances of the nine saints killing the dragon are found in a hymn to Abuna Aregawi, and a very detailed version is found in a homily on Abba Garima

In Egypt once I visited a small temple of Isis on an island in the Nile at the end of a long, tiring day. It cannot be a coincidence; the facts are the same in the Bible. The emblem used marks the only difference between the two episodes: Horus uses the symbol of the falcon while Moses uses that of the serpent.
