THE ARCANA M6 WHEN YOU HAVE A COLD
@fox-daddy feel better 🔫
(This may have skipped the editing stage..)
Asra
Please don't die
Knows how to care for you in ways nobody else could
They are going to baby you like you've just died and come back to life
Makes you a dozen mugs of tea throughout the day so that you stay hydrated. He may or may not have put little pain relieving enchantments in them
He's going to snuggle the shit out of you so much that he's going to fall ill too. Then you're all sickish together
Nadia
She's busy to the extreme but she wants to be with you so badly
Writes you notes all day, gets a servant to run them to you (yes, you must write some back)
Writes to ask if you need anything sent to you, to ask if you want her to drop everything and go be with you, to tell you how radiant you are even in sickness...
As soon as she's done with work she's by your side doting on you and making sure you're not dying
Julian
Leeches
When you deny him his use of leeches and other questionable medical methods he settles for the tried and tested method of healing that is cuddles
He's a doctor, MC, he would know
Makes up a tray of all the stuff you might need, water, painkillers, the neti pot, leeches (just in case), the whole shebang
Randomly drops medical facts about colds whenever you cough (whilst cradling you like a baby)
Wears his plague mask the whole time though, he can't be getting his patients sick
Portia
This is the one time she's taking a day off work for a cold, because it's you getting sick and not her
Actually when she first found out you were sick she left immediately
When she came back it was with soups from Mazelinka
She's not letting you marinate in gloom either, she's flinging the curtains open to let light in, she's putting the kettle on, she's swaddling you in blankets, she's curling up in them with you
Reads to you while you lay around together
Muriel
He doesn't know how to cope with his own colds, let alone anybody else's! Be patient with him, he's still figuring this out but he's trying his best
Stays by your side the whole day
If you want to be held he'll hold you, if you want something to drink he'll make you tea, if you want food he'll bring you a meal
He wants you to know he's there for you
As nonchalant as he seems, he's freaking out internally. If you die again he won't know what to do with himself, so don't go doing that please
If it gets to be really bad he'll even go into town and he'll talk to that annoying doctor
Lucio
At least it's not his fault this time /j
He's not entirely sure what to do but he'll still hang out with you
Yeah, he might need instructions on caring for the sick
All the hugs and kisses in the world, even when you're sick. This gets him sick too. Apparently mouth to mouth contact with the ill is not advisable
Mercedes and Melchior come and sit on you like the most excited weighted blanket on the planet

Do you have any headcanons for how the hacketteers would deal with being sick? Maybe how often they get sick, what type of illnesses they are prone to, etc….
Way behind on Quarry asks but I am home sick with some kind of crud right now so what better time to answer this one?!
Emma - Emma is a people person and always on the go, so she's exposed to a lot of germs. I feel like she'd be the one to get into juicing and making smoothies for immune health and the 'sexy' supplements like Moon Juice or whatever Gwyneth Paltrow is selling (but nobody’s sure if she really buys into them or if she’s just trying to get a sponsorship). Emma has a system for any kind of normal illness that doesn't completely knock her on her ass and that is to take a very hot bath with peppermint and eucalyptus bath salts and drink a hot toddy while she's in there. (Just the one, she doesn't want to drown!)
Jacob - This guy gets the dreaded Man Cold and is the sickest person who has ever lived. He doesn't get sick often because he's fairly health conscious, but he's absolutely pathetic and mopey about it when he does. He wants to be babied because his perfect male specimen of a body and extensive supplement regimen have betrayed him. He hates going to the doctor and puts it off until someone makes him go. Kaitlyn brings him soup and yells at him (affectionately) to stop being pathetic. He drinks a ton of Gatorade when he's sick (always Cool Blue flavor).
Kaitlyn - Look, Kaitlyn's Asian and her family was wearing masks during cold and flu season long before it was cool. She doesn't totally buy into the traditional Chinese medicine stuff but she does believe in the healing power of food that's spicy as fuck, especially if she's having sinus issues. She's also a fan of long, hot baths or showers, chicken soup with a ton of garlic, drinking a bunch of tea with lemon and ginger, the sauna at the gym, exercising even if she doesn't feel like it, hot yoga, and acupuncture. If that doesn't knock it out, she's not too stubborn to go to the doctor, people like that (who have insurance but don’t use it) drive her crazy (Jacob!).
Abi - If something is going around, Abi just knows she's going to get it. She’s a worrier and a bit of a catastrophizer when she does get sick. She's a hand sanitizer addict, she's got those cute sparkly holders from Bath & Body Works (but she uses the Halloween ones all year). She's good about letting herself take time to rest and get her strength back after an illness though. She likes to catch up on trash TV while she's recuperating. She also gets allergy shots because her environmental allergies are insane. She uses a neti pot or saline spray often to ward off sinus infections.
Ryan - Our stoic boy is stoic. Ryan takes all the necessary precautions to not get sick, he's kind of an obsessive hand-washer for sensory reasons anyway, but when he does, he follows doctors' recommendations to the letter and rarely complains. He will typically muddle through like normal if he's not got something contagious, but if he has to take time off work or school, he doesn't really talk about it or look to be cared for, just holes up in his room alone trying to not spread it around--he is very conscientious. Ryan gets the occasional migraine and that's one thing he can't really muddle through. He has to be in a quiet, dark room to recover, with an ice pack on his head, a caffeinated beverage, and a guided meditation podcast.
Dylan - People love to make our boy a damsel in distress because he's a cute gay string bean that bad things happen to, but Dylan is pretty tough in the game (like, unrealistically tough at times). I tend to consider his amputee arc as main canon, so given the assumption that he doesn't die of sepsis after surviving werewolves, he's got to have a pretty robust immune system and probably doesn't get sick that often. He does have that whole under-react/overreact thing going on though (the air freshener lol), so I imagine that when he does get sick, he either just carries on until he physically can't anymore (he'd wear a mask and get vaccinated and all that good stuff, he's a scientist after all, but he’s bad about making sure he gets rest) OR he starts Googling his symptoms and getting paranoid, convinced he has some rare incurable disease (he doesn't). He also doesn't really like to slow down and let people take care of him but when they really insist, he not-so-secretly loves the attention, from his mom, his boyfriend, his roommate/bestie, whoever.
Nick - Nick turns into a slimy wet sex pest whenever he gets sick. No, I’m kidding. I think it’d be funny/ironic/unfortunate if chef Nick had kind of a sensitive digestive system. He will eat anything, especially if Jacob is eating it. But, alas, Jacob has an iron stomach and our poor Nicholas does not. So he gets a lot of tummy troubles from doing things like eating 20 year old snacks or trying to go head to head with Jacob and Kaitlyn in a spicy ramen challenge. Nick gets sick a regular amount with stuff like head colds and is just kind of middle of the road as far as how he handles it. He does however have a habit of making up untrue facts about Australia that he tells his coworkers and campers when no one has the internet available to fact check him and one of them is that a steaming mug of hot pickle juice is a favorite folk remedy for colds there.
Max - he doesn’t get sick often but he is highly accident-prone. Like, so accident-prone that his family has started calling them ‘Maxidents’ when he has a major mishap. He routinely falls off ladders, gets attacked by migratory waterfowl, trips while trying to carry more groceries than he should into the apartment, etc. Max is luckily a very good patient because he has a lot of practice. He also has a lot of ice packs in the freezer at all times.
Laura - she gets onto Max about being careful, getting enough sleep, eating healthy, etc, but Laura is a do as I say, not as I do kinda gal. She does try to be healthy and active but she’s really busy (busier than ever post-canon because she thinks she can outrun trauma if she never slows down long enough to think about it). When Laura gets sick she gets Leslie Knope sick.
Tumblr media
Max has to put her in bed and take care of her because she will not admit she needs it until she is practically on death’s door.

Happy fall! How would you and Andy spend the perfect fall day together?
😭 happy fall! The only thing that’s super fall like here is these fluffy white seeds that have infiltrated my area. I walk outside covering my nose because I just know I’m going to breathe one in. Neti Pots are friends!!
😩 Andy and my perfect fall day! Of course, he’s the first to wake up. He had the perfect cup of coffee with some of our homemade pumpkin creamer. So what if he threw in some canned cinnamon rolls, he knows the tricks to make them taste amazing. He’s just waiting on me to make the frosting.
While I’m finishing up breakfast, and working on the best cup of coffee ever, he’s waking up the sleepy headed baby. She’s a good little sleeper, and loves waking up to her daddy’s face. It is a nice relaxing Sunday, and it’s still warm and pretty, so we’re going to take her to the local pumpkin farm. There’s a small little petting zoo, and she loves the bunnies. A hay ride, picking out pumpkins. AND fresh mulled cider!
Sometimes the best part of fall is watching the world change around you. But seeing everything new through someone else’s eyes is even better.
What is your perfect fall day??

Forgot how weird/gross/good it feels to use a neti pot. Baby hormones made all my internal tissues confused and inflamed, and my sinuses and ears have gotten seriously clogged for the first time in years. Luckily no infection! Which is a godsend, because all of my pre-surgery teenage sinus problems made me resistant to antibiotics… 😬
(aside: You don’t realize how weird skulls are until you see a picture of the inside of your own head while a doctor says “yeah we gotta scrape some of those face bones right out”)
Anyway, I broke out the ol’ face irrigator at the midwife’s suggestion and just did my first rinse in years. (Yes, I bleached it first!)
WooOoOF. It’s like sneezing out the ocean.

I started getting a sore throat that's turned into a hacking cough and my nose is so stopped up even the neti pot can't clear it.
I've been using Zicam and some cold and flu pills that are massive. Chris was joking with me that we only take those when we're dying because they're hard to swallow. I've been drinking tea and diffusing Eucalyptus oil too but I still feel like I'm dying.
I'm such a baby about my nose and throat. I have nightmares about suffocating when my nose is even a little stuffy much less totally just not working 😕
I don't have covid thankfully but I'm worried if I'm sick I won't be allowed to go to treatment. And I don't know what awful things the future holds if I don't go.. so I'm trying really hard to slow down, and take care of myself so I can physically recover hopefully before they call me about a bed space later this week.
I found out yesterday that it's a 7 day program not 14 so I feel a little more at ease going away. I just realized I'll have a week to focus on routines and goal planning and generally learning how to live with the brain I got. I won't have to do laundry unless it's mine or wash everyone's dishes. It's a bunch of adults that probably pick up after themselves and the clear space will be good for me.
I got out my suitcase and it's making things feel very real and scary.

The baby has a super stuffy nose and sore throat today.
He keeps crying, he's so miserable. Just absolutely heartbroken. He's taken all sorts of meds.
I'd get him the neti pot if i thought he could do it without drowning, but.. 😓
Poor baby 😫

Neti Pots Are Great for Flushing Out Snot. Plus, They Won’t Kill You. The devices have gotten a bad reputation thanks to fear of amoebas, but they’re easy to use safely, and worthwhile. By Shannon Palus
Well, Actually is a weekly column by Slate’s Shannon Palus. Each week, she’ll test health and wellness products to help readers figure out what they should try, what they should skip, and why.
Last December, news broke of a woman who died from a rare brain infection. The illness was caused by an amoeba, which, the authors of an article in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases posited, must have entered the woman’s body via her nose. There weren’t many other options—it’s safe to drink these bugs since the stomach destroys them before they enter the blood stream. So why had this woman been snorting water? She’d had a sinus infection, which she’d treated in part with nasal irrigation. The blame for her freakish death fell on the neti pot, even though her tap water was never tested for the Balamuthia mandrillaris that killed her. (It’s also possible to inhale this amoeba, which can be found in soil or dust.)
Nasal irrigation—whether with a neti pot or a specialized squirt bottle—is actually extremely safe. Yet due to a few highly publicized cases over the years, like that of the woman who died above, the devices seem intractably linked to the possibility of coming down with a freak killer illness. But neti pots do not deserve this reputation. They are an easy to use and low-risk, if fairly mild, treatment for everything from the common cold to recurring sinusitis. And it’s very easy to use them safely.
The neti pot is borrowed from traditional Indian medicine and became popular in the U.S. in recent decades alongside yoga. Sales got a boost in the U.S. in 2007 after an Oprah segment featuring Dr. Oz, who suggested that washing the inside of one’s nose was as logical as washing one’s armpits. A case study on media coverage of the practice notes that Kathie Lee Gifford described the neti pot as “nasty and so much fun.” (As that paper points out, Americans love to borrow things from other cultures and then low-key degrade them.)
A neti pot is an oblong vessel with a long spout that you bring to one nostril as you tilt your head to the other side, allowing the contents of your nose to trickle out the other nostril as you flush water in. Other kinds of specialized squirt bottles work too, and can even allow you to squeeze water into your nose without you needing to artfully tip your head.
I grew up irrigating my nose when I had a nasty cold with a nasal aspirator, a round blue-green bulb with a long thin spout (often used to suck snot from baby’s noses), a habit that I’d learned from my parents who got the recommendation from an allergy doctor. (Our particular method involved hanging one’s head off a bed upside down and squirting water in, letting gravity do some of the work.) As a kid, I enjoyed how weirdly satisfying it was. Like so many things our parents teach us—and probably bolstered by the occasional media scare—I stopped doing it when I left the house.
To revisit the practice for this story, I chose the NeilMed Sinus Rinse Starter Kit. It’s easier to get the hang of than a true pot, as I found when I gave feedback on a few styles of neti pot to a former colleague for her guide review (a useful resource to help select a neti pot that’d work well for you). Unlike the nasal bulbs of my youth, it’s clear which is useful because the bulbs and pots can harbor mold if you’re not careful when you clean them.
Neti pots do not deserve this reputation. They are an easy to use and low-risk, if fairly mild, treatment for everything from the common cold to recurring sinusitis.
I placed the order, and then immediately came down with a disgusting cold. Per the instructions, I boiled water for five minutes; this would kill any amoeba that might be lurking in my tap (distilled water works, too). Next, I mixed in one of the salt packets that came with the bottle. Plain water might make your mucous cells swell a little because those cells have some salt, and water likes to even out the salt concentration across a membrane. Then I let it cool, because it’s important to not shoot water hot enough to make tea into one’s body. Once it was cool, I shot the water up my nose while standing over the sink and waited for it to make its way to my gross snot. It pushed some out and made it much easier to blow my nose immediately after. It took a few tries to get right—I was too timid at first to really squeeze—but then wasn’t too difficult. “I quite like the feeling,” says Paul Little, a professor of primary care research at the University of Southampton and author of the most substantial study on nasal irrigation to date.
There’s something interesting about putting water up one side of your nose and having it dribble out the other. It always brings me to the realization that the body is a sort of mysterious system of caves. The trick is especially interesting when the nasal passage is clogged—ah yes, my face is not, in fact, a solid brick of snot. It didn’t work as well to physically remove snot for me as taking pseudoephedrine did, but I found it a nice complement to the medicine. It could also be an alternative to make things feel fresher and clearer when I was stuffy but not under the weather enough to justify popping a Sudafed.
My experience tracks with those of the folks in Little’s study, which involved 671 patients with recurring or chronic sinus issues. He and his team found that those who used neti pots over six months were less likely to reach for over-the-counter medication, too. Their symptoms in general were reduced, and they felt less inclined to go to the doctor for treatment—a visit that could involve unnecessary antibiotics and bolster the ever-terrifying problem of antibiotic resistance. While the neti pot can’t change your anatomy (which is one cause of recurring sinus problems), it can—in addition to make breathing easier by clearing snot—flush out bacteria, Little explains. It was outside the scope of that study, but it’s plausible that regular use could reduce the number of infections someone gets overall. Turns out that Oz’s like-washing-your-armpits comparison wasn’t that far off after all.
There hasn’t been research on the neti pot and the common, one-off cold—how I used it—but there’s no reason not to do it if you feel like it helps, says Little. “It’s simple and cheap. A benign treatment.” Perhaps one reason he finds it so benign is that he’s in the U.K., where brain-eating amoeba aren’t even a problem; when I asked about neti pots and risk of death, he was surprised.
But even here in brain-eating-amoeba America, most people don’t get those infections (commonly due to a strain called Naegleria fowleri) from neti pots; they get them from swimming, and according to the CDC, in one case from a backyard Slip ’N Slide. Just three got the bug from nasal irrigation, making the grand total number of people who are thought to have died from neti pots a whopping four (including the first case mentioned, which involved another kind of amoeba). Still, these are obviously high stakes, so purifying your water by boiling it or grabbing a bottle of the distilled stuff is a necessary and thankfully easy step. For a cleaner, tingly nose, I’ll take it.

From @peanut-with-wifi-access
#some good rest cures all!#←(has tried to sleep off sickness b4 and has only ever woken up feeling worse)#←←(random icy tips about sickness would be appreciated)
Certainly! I'll put them below the cut bc it got long.
I don't have any magic curse, but I do know a bit to help treat some symptoms to help you go about your day easier.
Obv resting is important, but so is hydration. Lots of water, but tbh when I'm sick, I tend to lean more on Gatorade. Specifically the Gatorade Thirst Quenchers that you can add to your water.
A hot shower or bath. A bath followed by a shower would be optimal, but I know not everyone has access to a bath. The humidity and steam help with any mucus buildup in the throat and chest.
And speaking of mucus buildup. I have 2 hot drinks that are helpful here. Hot lemonade with thyme and apple pie tea.
Hot Lemonade
The juice of 1 lemon
1 tablespoon slightly fermented honey with garlic (recipe will be below) - Garlic can be omitted from the drink
Either 1 sprig of thyme or 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme
1 mug of hot water
Add all of the ingredients in to a mug of your choice and enjoy!
Apple Pie Tea
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon honey (does not have to be slightly fermented)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
1 mug of hot water
Add all of the ingredients in to a much of your choice and enjoy!
The acid in the lemon juice and apple cider vinegar help break down the mucus and thin it out. The hot water helps wash it away. And the honey helps to soothe and coat your throat. The spices and thyme are for flavor and can be omitted.
I also super recommend a humidifier. I have a cold humidifier - it just means the steam is cold, rather than hot - for my room. It's the same 1 I bought my cousin for their baby. It needs to be dried completely at the end of each use (I usually disassemble it and let it air dry while I'm at work or out of my room for the day), and needs to be cleaned once a week (run it normally with water and a bit of white vinegar, and then wipe down when it turns itself off).
And now onto something not everyone may like that will help clear out your sinuses.
Slightly Fermented Honey with Garlic
1 cup garlic cloves
1 cup raw honey
1 sanitized mason jar
Mason jars can be sanitized in boiling water, or wash and dry the jar and pop in to a clean microwave, sans lid, for 60 seconds.
Peel the garlic cloves and crush them either with the back of a knife blade or the palm of your hand and place them in the jar.
Poor the raw honey over the garlic cloves. Make sure every clove is coated in the honey.
Place the lid on the jar loosely and pop into a dark corner or cabinet.
Every day for about 1 month, make sure to re-mix the garlic in the honey to coat the cloves and place back in the dark corner or cabinet. You should see some bubbles start to form on the surface of the honey.
The flavor will develop over time, and the garlic will mellow out.
Raw honey is optimal, as it will have the bacteria needed to help start the fermentation process. If raw honey isn't available, it will take a little longer to ferment. So, it’s always nice to have a jar at the ready.
My sister tends to make this more than we do. And she'll use the honey and garlic in different things - salad dressings, red pasta sauce, things like that. It's really good for allergies and any kind of illness.
If you're fine with water in your nose, a Neti pot or something similar is very helpful. Don't just use tap water, if probably the biggest takeaway. It's not safe, as there may be bacteria in your water that you're unaware of that can seriously make you sick or worse.
Sterilize the water first (microwave or boil) and let it cool to room temp, mix with a saline solution, put in 1 nostril, tilt your head back slightly to guide it through your sinuses, tilt your head to the side, and then down in front of a sink to drain. You'll be able to feel the water go thru your nasal passages.
And finally, eat fruits and vegetables. You can eat white meats, but red meats can make you feel worse when sick. Same with any high-fat food (so no cookies/biscuits, ice cream, cake, chips/crisps, etc.).
For a classic recipe:
Chicken noodle soup
1 chicken breast
1 yellow onion
2 or 3 stalks of celery
3 large carrots or 2 cups of carrots
3 cloves of garlic (do not use the slightly fermented garlic from the honey mixture)
8 cups of chicken broth or stock
2 tablespoons of butter
1 sprig of thyme or 1/2 teaspoon of dried thyme
1 sprig of rosemary or 1/2 teaspoon of dried rosemary
1/4 teaspoon of dried sage
1 box of noodles
Either cook the chicken breast whole or cut them up into bite sized chunks with some oil over a low to medium heat/flame. Cook until no longer white, and there is some golden color on the meat. Take the chicken out and set to the side.
While the chicken cooks, you can cut up the onion. Gordon Ramsey has the best video for dicing an onion, imo. After the chicken is done, cook the onion with the butter and a dash of more oil. The oil will keep the butter from burning. Turn the heat/flame down to low and cover. Allow the onions to turn translucent before stirring. When the onions have started to yellow slightly, you'll know they're done.
As the onion is going, you can prep the carrots and celery. Carrots do not need to be peeled, but you're welcome to do so. Cut into bite sized chunks. The celery can be cut into bite sized chunks as well or minced if you don't like the flavor (like me). If needed, you can add a little more oil to the pot.
Add in the garlic and herbs. Cook until fragrant (30 seconds to a minute), add the chicken back in, add in broth/stock. And boil. Turn down to a low- medium heat/flame while making the pasta.
In another pot, boil some water for your choice of pasta. Cook per the directions on the box.
The ingredients for the soup, sans pasta, can be put into a slow cooker and cook on low all day or over night.
The soup can be made ahead of time and frozen in portions, so it’s already there for when you’re feeling sick. Don’t freeze the pasta with the rest of the soup. Make sure the soup is room temp before freezing.
I always recommend making the pasta on the side and not mixing it with the rest of the soup. If frozen, the texture of the noodles is off. They also absorb a LOT of the broth/stock. Keeping them separated helps with that.
My preferred pasta with chicken noodle is actually egg noodles.
If you can’t get stock or broth, water and bouillon works just as well. I’ll typically do a mix of some stock or broth and water with bouillon. It can get expensive.
If you’re too sick to make the soup itself, canned in more than fine. I’m a Progresso fan, but the store brand thats labeled as chunky is the same thing and more affordable, so I’d go with that.
A lot of these treatments for different symptoms can actually help you get more rest, which will allow you to get better sooner.
Hopefully this is helpful. It’s probably a lot of stuff y’all’ve seen before, but there might be something you’ve never seen before.
Tumblr media
Oh, Luz, honey.
Hopefully this sleeping helped her.

Your tags about your visiting family reminds of when I used to joke about giving babies a little something something (children’s Benadryl) before a long flight. I once offended a parent so badly that I had to stop saying it. Lol.
Listen you have no idea how many times I was listening to my crying babies (both had severe reflux as infants so they cried A LOT) desperately wishing it was 1890 so I could rub some whiskey on their gums or give them juuuuust a smidge of over-the-counter opium lol, but joking about that in front of other moms does not go over well 😬

Here is a sweet benny and santi thought. They hate to see their baby isn't feeling well. Soon they found out what is wrong. ( sinus headache) they will find ways to make her feel better.
Santi's running back and forth between the kitchen and the bathroom—his hair is a wild mess and he's wearing an apron that's half hanging off of him—trying to make you soup and run a hot bath at the same time. Benny rushed to the pharmacy in the meantime.
Santi's also in middle of trying to Google holistic remedies, and he calls Benny and tells him to get peppermint and lavender essential oils while he's out.
Benny panic-bought half of the pharmacy, basically. He's got a neti pot, a vaporizer, every single brand of decongestant that was on the shelf, you name it. He couldn't find the essential oils so he bought a bag of peppermint candies and a few sprigs of dried lavender instead 😭

b!bucky taking care of you when you have a cold doing the whole simmer pot thing on the stove, fussing over you when you try to do shit even though you are sick. "stop being a stubborn brat and let me take care of you!"
no ok this made me think of bucky being sick and he’s of course a baby about it and you take care of him but like aggressively. taking his temperature without warning and bringing him soup and Demanding that he eats it and making him use one of those neti pot things to clear his sinuses because nothing else is working and he keeps complaining and he’s leaned over the sink and you’re holding his head and pouring it into his nose and he’s like ‘OW ew that feels so weird i hate that’ and ur like ‘bucky i don’t care it’s working’ 😭😭

Creeper Vargas x OC
An unexpected late night encounter brings out Creepers soft side and flips two unsuspecting worlds upside down.
Masterlist
-----
Julia could remember the day she had met Creeper like it was just yesterday even though a full year had gone by.
She had been standing in the cold and flu supply aisle at the local pharmacy, eyes frantically darting across the boxes that held children’s medicine.
Creeper had been standing at the other end of the aisle, two different brand neti pots held in each hand as he weighed the best features of each before he made his decision on which one he was going to purchase in preparation for flu season when the crying of a baby and the quiet shushing of its mother down the aisle caught his attention. The woman was dressed in an oversized grey hoodie with mickey mouse pajama pants, her tangled hair was hanging out of a lazy bun and cradled in her arms was a child no older than one year. Creeper set the neti pots back onto the shelf before slowly approaching the distressed looking woman.
“Need a hand finding something?”
The woman’s tired, bloodshot eyes settled on the man who had approached her, she was surprised to see he was heavily tattooed and wearing a Mayans kutte. The wails of her baby quickly pulled her back to the task at hand, gently rocking the restless child with slightly more bounce to try and sooth her.
“I’m looking for a fever reducer but I can’t find anything for infants under 24 months.”
Creeper scanned the shelf, kneeling down to see the contents on the very bottom and even digging through a few promising areas but coming up empty handed.
“Wait here.”
She watched as the Mayan disappeared from the aisle, returning two minutes later with a small box in hand. Julia nearly cried in relief as she read what it was, accepting it from the man with a tired smile.
“The pharmacist didn’t have time to restock.”
“Thank you so much…”
“Neron.”
“Thank you, Neron.”
Julia had spent the past few days thinking about the man she had met in the pharmacy; she was so thankful for the help she had received while being too flustered and tired to think about something as simple as speaking with the pharmacist. She stood outside the gates of Romero Bros. Scrapyard, knowing that was where the Mayans Clubhouse was located- she had lived fairly close and seen the bikes multiple times a day when they passed her apartment. She smiled at the babbling baby that was strapped to her chest before she stepped through the small gap between the gate.
She caught sight of a man polishing the line of impressive motorcycles, on his back was the same kutte that Neron had worn but this man had a “Prospect” patch instead of “Southern Cali”. The crunching of her sneakers on the gravel caught the man’s attention as she neared him.
“Sorry to bother you but I’m looking for Neron.”
“Creeper? I can let him know you’re here.”
A moment later Neron exited the clubhouse, a confused expression on his face until he spotted the woman waiting for him. She looked good, not that she hadn’t looked beautiful the first time they had met but now she looked much more well rested and relaxed.
She smiled at him sheepishly, unable to see his eyes under his dark sunglasses. “I’m sorry for just showing up here like this but I wanted to thank you again for your help the other night.”
“It was no problem, Ma.” He sent her a smile before glancing down at the baby that was looking up at him with pure delight. “Little Ma feeling better?”
“Her fever was gone by the next morning.” Julia gently ran her head over her daughter’s thin hair before handing the biker a tin foil wrapped package. “I wasn’t sure how to thank you so I made you banana bread.”
Julia lay in bed, her eyes on the television but her mind had continued to drift. She was pulled from her thoughts as her boyfriend walked through the bedroom door, smiling at her as he crawled into his side of the bed, placing his hand overtop of where hers rested on her growing belly.
“Whatcha thinking about, Ma?” He asked, his voice nearly a whisper as to not disturb the relaxed atmosphere that surrounded them.
“When we first met, I wasn’t expecting this past year to go this way.”
“You looked overwhelmed, just tryna find a way to help your baby, I wasn’t expecting it either but I don’t want it any other way. To have you and little ma, damn, she ain’t my kid but I feel so blessed to have you both in my life- to help you raise her.”
“And now this little bean.” Julia mused, feeling the baby kick at Creepers hand as he gently rubbed her belly.
“I love you, Ma.”
“I love you, too.”
