"Oh, I'm so glad to two of you are back! Things have been insane," Babette tells them as they sit down to eat at Luke's. "Luke and Lorelai still aren't talkin', and Rory's just come back from that big DC trip, and Jess is-"

They all glance over and watch Jess engaging in a deep kiss with a bottle blonde.

Lenny wrinkles his nose and sends a wadded up napkin sailing at Jess's head. The teenager glowers at him.

"You!" Lenny calls. "More coffee!"

"You see?" Babette stresses. "Everything's a mess!"

Midge blows out a breath. "They'll figure their shit out eventually. Lorelai needs to grow up about this whole Jess thing."

"It was just a bad situation all around," Morey points out. "Jess bein' kicked out, and then brought back by you guys, and Luke and Lorelai with that big fight. I thought they'd figure it all out by now, but it's been months."

"I think they're both feeling hurt," Midge sighs. "It takes time to mend those kinds of things. Especially when kids are involved."

"Hopefully they'll figure it out sooner rather than later," Lenny comments as Jess walks over. "Hey, kid."

"Coffee," Jess says tersely as he refills Lenny's cup.

"What? I haven't seen you all summer, you not happy to see me?" Lenny teases.

"How are you, Jess?" Midge asks.

"Fine."

"Who's your girlfriend?" Midge asks.

"Shane."

"Can you say more than one word at a time?" Midge asks.

"Maybe."

She chuckles softly and gives him an affectionate shove. "Go away."

"I don't know why you're so nice to him, he's a little putz," Babette says.

"Yeah, he is, but I have a soft spot for putzes," Midge jokes. "And he's just a lonely kid."

Morey glances back as Jess goes back to kissing Shane. "Not that lonely."

Lenny chuckles and sips his coffee.
