Many film lovers and historians don’t consider Hum Aapke Hai Koun as just another blockbuster. For them, it’s a milestone of sorts which brought many changes in the way we saw cinema and these changes can still be seen to this day. The film had a thorough influence on the idea of marriages in India. Many communities in India didn’t have the custom of hiding a groom’s shoes but it became commonplace after this well-made entertainer! Also, it was rare film of that era which didn’t have violence and a villain. Yet, there was enough tension generated in the second half and viewers came out thoroughly satisfied. It was a formula used well in few films in the 60s and 70s but with Hum Aapke Hai Koun, this trend got a boost and was seen in many other films later on. Its songs were a rage then, and are memorable even today. To have almost dozen tracks in a film and to have someone breaking into a song in any situation and yet not boring the audience was a feat. And of course, the performances are exemplary by one and all – Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Renuka Shahane, Mohnish Bahl, Laxmikant Berde, Alok Nath etc. The dog Redo also played a crucial part and won the hearts across the country! But the real winner was undoubtedly writer-director Sooraj Barjatya. He put together the whole film so well and knew it’ll work, even when initial reviews slammed the film and called it a ‘wedding video’

But apart from all these achievements, Hum Aapke Hai Koun is also remembered today for its juggernaut box office performance. The strategy today is to release the film in maximum number of screens. Hum Aapke Hai Koun then released in around 35 cinemas, which was still lower than the norm then. The idea was to increase the prints, once the film became popular. As a result, the first day collections of the film were simply Rs. 10 lakhs. The same day – August 5, 1994 –another film also released, Vijaypath. Starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu, it released in around 200 screens and earned Rs. 51 lakhs on Day 1. By the end of the first weekend, Hum Aapke Hai Koun had netted just Rs. 29 lakhs while Vijaypath had managed to accumulate Rs. 1.44 crores. In Week 1, the former earned Rs. 58 lakhs. As for Vijaypath, it had made a healthy collection of Rs. 2.41 crores.

In its lifetime, Vijaypath earned Rs. 6.45 crores. And Hum Aapke Hai Koun earned, believe it or not, Rs. 72.47 crores! This was a time when even earning Rs. 9-10 crore lifetime was an achievement. With each passing week, the craze increased tremendously and soon it was playing in hundreds of screens across the country. As a result, the film earned more than the previous weeks and this went on for almost 25-30 weeks. A year later, it became tax-free in Maharashtra reportedly and this must have also given a boost to the film’s earnings.

Recently, there were articles in the West as to how the recently released blockbuster Avengers: Endgame defeated the 2009 sci-fi flick Avatar to become the biggest movie in history. Several experts pointed that the 1938 classic love saga Gone With The Wind was a bigger hit, when adjusted for inflation. Avengers: Endgame has collected $2.79 billion worldwide while Gone With The Wind made around $3.44 billion worldwide with today’s ticket prices! Similarly, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’s Hindi version is seen as the biggest hit in the history of Hindi cinema, with its collections of Rs. 510.99 crores. But if we talk of Hum Aapke Hai Koun, then its adjusted nett gross comes to around Rs. 711.29 crores! This mind-boggling figure shows what sort of a historic blockbuster this family entertainer was.

This film managed to earn so much as it was seen by 7.4 crore people, which is also the highest domestic footfalls of any Hindi film released since the 1990s. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion was seen by around 5.25 crore viewers. In the years to come, some film will surely go past the Rs. 711.29 crores figure of Hum Aapke Hai Koun. But thanks to the newer avenues of entertainment and rising ticket prices, it’s unfortunate that probably no film will ever have as much footfalls as Hum Aapke Hai Koun! Dangal box-office collection day 13: Aamir's film beats Dhoom 3, Sultan becomes next target

While it remains to be seen if Aamir Khan's Dangal can trump Salman Khan's Sultan at the box office, according to latest reports, the wrestling-based sports drama is already the 4th highest-grossing film of all time.

Ahead of Dangal is PK with a lifetime gross of Rs 792 crore, Baahubali: The Beginning with Rs 650 crore, Bajrangi Bhaijaan with Rs 626 crore, Sultan with Rs 584.15 crore.

Dangal has now a lifetime worldwide gross of Rs 570 crore with Rs 410 crore coming from Indian theatres and Rs 160 crore coming from international theatres.

Tiger Zinda Hai’s Twelth day Box office Collection to surpass 300 crore: Collects 16.04 crore on its Second Tuesday

Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai is proving to be a million dollar baby for the filmmakers. The Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starter has been breaking records at the box-office since its release. It stands unshaken as the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2017.

Ali Abbas Zafar’s other directorial venture Sultan had smashed records and went on to become a huge blockbuster. Tiger Zinda Hai is following the lead. It is on a dream run and has shown its dominance right from its opening day.

The film made Rs 16.04 crore on Tuesday, inching..racing towards the 300 crore mark. It is expected to go past the 300 crore Sultan mark by this weekend and the 316 crore net of Bajrangi Bhaijaan probably by the end of the third week.

Friday saw a drop of 40% which is excellent considering there was also a huge holiday yesterday. It was the first real working day post the Xmas and New Year when the majority of the offices will be open after the break. There was a chance that it could see the first big drop but that did not happen.

Tiger Zinda Hai is luckily nothing like the typical spy thriller. No Bond, no blondies, no jacuzzies. Katrina Kaif ( a Pakistani agent in the movie) plays the damsel-ready-to-distress and joins forces with an Indian agent Tiger to battle a ruthless militant. Choppers crashing, blood splutters and a lot of machine guns, this is not a movie for the weak nerves. And definitely not for the moral police, who have slammed to the movie as…errr..anti-national..!!??? Ummm..ok nationalists..yay to your patriotism!

The movie was a no-show in Pakistan as their censor board slammed it as anti- Pakistan. Seems like the nationalists of both the countries go hand in hand.

A big shout out to the moral police (serious pun intended!!!).

It will fade away. It's a huge task to keep it going for such a long time. After a point, every superstar’s film does not perform as well and their collection comes down to 8-10 per cent. That will toh happen with me as well but I don’t think it has started yet (smiles).

But you still give the younger brigade of actors a run for their money whenever you appear on the silver screen.

I still don’t know what fans see in me. The kind of films I do are like those I have grown up watching. I used to react to those films the same way my fans react to my films. When my film plays on screens and fans enjoy, I feel I am watching with them and that I am watching what I would want to see myself.

Recently, Akshay Kumar said that he will be able to do action films maybe till he is 56-57 years of age. What about you?

Not too long I guess, another 30-35 years max (Grins).

Bharat will hit the screens in a few days. What is your feeling about the film?

The trailer and songs are good. It has a huge canvas. It’s been shot really well. Action, thrill, comedy, romance and all that stuff is there. But the main reason why this film was done is its plot. Here, a nine-year-old boy has been given the responsibility to take care of his mother and three siblings. There is a father, who promises to return. From the age of nine till 72, he has done everything to see that everyone stays together and his siblings get married and settle down. His journey shows it all.

It is being said that the character reflects your personality. You too have always supported your family and friends.

(Smiles) Actually, it is just the opposite. They always support me. I need the support.

Is Bharat your best film ever?

Every film is my best film.

Are you nervous?

If two-three films don’t do well, I may get nervous. So far, it’s been good. It was said that Race 3 did not do well, but it did Rs 170+ crores.

Heard that you narrated the story of Bharat to Sooraj Barjatya first?

Yes, I had narrated this subject to Sooraj Barjatya, and he made an amazing suggestion for the love story. I told Ali (Abbas Zafar, director) that he (Bharat) should not get married to her (Katrina Kaif’s Kumud). It just deviates everything. If he has his own family then what about his mother and siblings? Also, what about his focus on his father?

Which is your favourite Bharat look?

The character of the older one is awesome. He has humour, anger and swag.

Do you think your fans will accept it?

I have always been told that a hero has to have long hair. Whenever an actor’s hairline recedes, his career takes a backseat. In Tere Naam, I took my hair off and that look was accepted.

Ali says that you are a versatile and phenomenal actor but people do not look at you that way because you do not talk seriously or intellectualise your acting skills like others, who say, "I isolated myself.." or "I didn’t sleep for two days to prep for the role"

(Cuts in) But as it is I don’t sleep much, I sleep for just two to three hours and it is not because I work hard on my characters in the night. I paint, I write and I watch TV. I have this habit when I watch TV — if something is already going on it, I don’t change the channel. I get upset when somebody comes and changes the channel. Even if it is the Tata Sky homepage, I keep watching it. Then somebody comes and changes it. If cricket is going on, I watch it though I don’t understand much. If some South channel is on, like Raj TV, I watch it. The most dangerous thing nowadays is web shows. I finish four-four seasons in one go.

Which one are you watching these days?

I was watching Game Of Thrones but I stopped. I watched till the fourth season. Then there was a break, so I couldn’t see the whole thing. Then I watched Vikings. It’s outstanding. I finished Taboo. Then there was a show called Arrow. I like watching period stuff. I watched Peaky Blinders. Now I want to watch Money Heist. There are three-four more web shows that I would like to watch.

Do you take suggestions from your family?

Yeah, from my sisters! The day before yesterday, I heard the climax of Game Of Thrones from my sisters. They told me who killed whom and all of that.

You are producing something for the web space, right?

Yes, there is something in the pipeline. We are also producing a lot of content for television like The Kapil Sharma Show and Nach Baliye (Season 9).

Will you feature in any of the web shows you are producing?

No. But our Indian sensibilities are different, so we need to make web content keeping that in mind. I started TV because a lot of friends — with whom we cannot work in films — are big names on television. I started TV because of that, not to make money. We started to give more and more employment to directors, producers and actors.

Have you watched the Baahubali movies?

I watched Baahubali: The Beginning but could not watch Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. So I don’t know who killed Katappa (laughs). By the way, I won’t mind if you give me spoilers. Even if you tell me the whole story, I will still watch it.

How did Katrina take your comment about her winning the National Award for her performance in Bharat?

She thinks I am joking about it. She told me, "You have been saying National Award and everybody thinks it is a joke, and that I may not get it." I told her I was serious about it. But she says the way I have been saying it, people might think I am joking. I really think she truly deserves the National Award for Bharat.

Do you think Katrina was the right choice for Bharat, and not Priyanka Chopra?

Priyanka was very keen to do this film. Initially, Ali and we thought that it was Katrina Kaif's film. But she had just done Tiger Zinda Hai with me. Straight after Tiger Zinda Hai, doing another film with me did not make sense. Moreover, Ali said it was the role of a Hindustani girl. I said, ‘It’s strange. Katrina is your friend. You have worked with her on multiple projects.' I asked him if Katrina herself did not have the confidence to pull off a Hindustani role. I mean, she has been living in India for the last 20 years. I told him, ‘Don’t be ridiculous. She has done so many films like Raajneeti, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Just because she has recently done films like Bang Bang, she won’t be able to play an Indian?’ It was ridiculous!

But then Ali said Priyanka had called him up and wanted to do this role. Priyanka and my sister, Arpita, are good friends. After that, the 'Nick story’ happened. She chose to get married, which is a very bold, brave and amazing step to take. She did what she wanted and Katrina got what she deserved.

Your films are panned by critics but loved by audiences. What do you have to say about critics and movie reviews?

These are the negative people. What to expect from them? It does not matter to me what they will say about me and my film. At times, they will give my film five stars, the other time minus five. They don’t understand anything. Even if their reviews affect 10-15 percent of the audience and people don’t go to watch it, that 10-15 percent less income makes a lot of difference to the poor producer. Films are not cheap to make. Films are not made in Rs 1 crore today. My film, Maine Pyar Kiya, was made with the budget of Rs 1.11 and it was the highest budgeted film at that point of time. The scenario is not the same anymore. Today, even the smallest film is made with Rs 25-30 crores. So you need to recover that money. Write reviews, but don’t be irresponsible. Don’t make fun of somebody’s work. Let the audience go and watch it. It may not make any difference in my life, but there are people who get affected by it.

Knowing all time highest grossing Bollywood Box Office Collection, the recent starrer Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has grabbed audiences attention bringing in 1715 crores worldwide and 511.30 crores from Hindi version. Yes, it was not a typical Bollywood film but was a dubbed version from Telugu. Knowing further about the All Time Highest Grossing Hindi films, it's our next favourite Hindi actor Mr. Aamir Khan. The movie that made news even after completing Indian theatrical run DANGAL. Yes, the film marked around 700 crores worldwide in the first release. It is made with 6 crores and has earned 9.71 crores so far in 6 days run. So, it is sure that this will make more than 12 crores from lifetime.

Next, knowing 2016 box office, it was a satisfying year especially for Akshay Kumar giving 3 100 crore films. Also, it has many blockbusters earning three times income. Like Neerja of Sonam Kapoor, Airlift of Akshay Kumar, Dangal and Salman’s Sultan.

Coming on to All Time Highest Grossing Movies of Bollywood, here is the following list:-

1. Well, you are already aware of this film. The first ranking mega movie Baahubali 2 making 534.00 crores approx. from only Hindi version. All Languages has brought more than 1000 crores while adding worldwide business, it stood with 1715 crores.

2. The second film that made the highest collection in India was its first sequel Baahubali: The Beginning making 420.00 net profit from the domestic country.

3. The third ranking film of Indian cinema is Dangal with 388.00 crores lifetime business. Yes, this is the actual Hindi film that made Bollywood proud.

4. At fourth spot, it's Aamir Khan again with PK, even this film post release in China made 740 crores approx. business. While knowing domestic income, PK entering in 300 crore club made 339.50 crores.

5. Now, the Top fifth highest grossing film is Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan making 320.24 crores. Yes, this is the film where Salman Khan not only received critical acclaim but also brought impressive income.

6. The sixth is Salman Khan again with Sultan released previous year making 300.45 crores business. This is where Salman was again appreciated for his performance.

Dangal box-office collection day 13: Aamir's film beats Dhoom 3, Sultan becomes next target

While it remains to be seen if Aamir Khan's Dangal can trump Salman Khan's Sultan at the box office, according to latest reports, the wrestling-based sports drama is already the 4th highest-grossing film of all time.

Ahead of Dangal is PK with a lifetime gross of Rs 792 crore, Baahubali: The Beginning with Rs 650 crore, Bajrangi Bhaijaan with Rs 626 crore, Sultan with Rs 584.15 crore.

Dangal has now a lifetime worldwide gross of Rs 570 crore with Rs 410 crore coming from Indian theatres and Rs 160 crore coming from international theatres.
